Cage: New Quantic Dream tech ahead of LA Noires
CliffyB. , , , . .Heavy Rain creator David Cage has said Team Bondis specially-developed Motion Scan technology is a “dead end”, and that Quantic Dreams new technology is already more advanced.
“I think [Motion Scan is] an interesting solution to a problem for now. But its also an interesting dead end,” the studio head told CVG.
“Thats exactly what I feel. Their technique is incredibly expensive and they will never be able to shoot body and face at the same time.”
Cage said Quantic Dream, which provides motion capture services to cinema alongside games development, is already able to do just that.
“We see a huge difference between shooting the face and body separately and shooting everything at the same time. Suddenly youve got a real sense of acting that is consistent. You cant imagine how related what you say with your face is to what your body does,” he said.
“[MotionScan] will never be able to do that.”
The director added that Motion Scan doesnt allow for real time lighting, limits shader use, and cant reposition eyes to ensure characters are looking in the right direction – and that Motion Scan does not have the potential to overcome these issues.
“I think L.A Noire looks good – honestly, it does – but I dont think theyll go much further than where they are.
“With the technology we use, we can improve; there is a lot of room for improvement and we hope to show very soon where we are now.”
Cage said his team had made “significant progress” since Heavy Rain, and expects to equal Avatar over the next few years.

Cage: Quantic “in discussion” with Sony over E3 reveal
Quantic Dream boss David Cage has confirmed that a possible E3 unveil of the studios next game is being discussed with Sony.
“This is in discussion right now with Sony,” Cage told CVG when asked about an announce in LA in June.
“Well see. I cant really answer anything on release dates. We are in production right now, so nothing will be coming out this year for sure.”
Quantic Dream has said in the past it has two projects in development, with Cage saying recently hes in an exclusive agreement with Sony for the foreseeable future.
Little is known of the games, aside from them being “very different” to both Heavy Rain and each other, with “different tone and different gameplay, but still based on concepts of narrative, storytelling and emotions.”
Move conundrum
As for whether or not the new game will use motion controls – Heavy Rain had Move plans which were pulled during development, only to be brought back following the games launch – the French developer says its being thought about.
“We learned a lot doing [Move for Heavy Rain]. We need some time to think about it and see how we can create even more exciting experiences,” he said.
“Maybe there will be more devices in the near future in the same direction but which work slightly differently that will open new ground. I can clearly see how DualShock is the end of an era and we need to move to something else as an industry.”
He continued: “I dont know if Kinect or Move are the ultimate answer. Its up to console manufacturers to bring [a new device]. But something will happen, hopefully soon.”

Cage: Developers must try harder “to help the industry to move on”
Quantic Dream head David Cage believes that developers should be pushing more boundaries when it comes to making games.
Speaking with CVG, he claimed that in order to get more non-gamers in on the action, the industry needs to be more ambitious.
“I approach videogames the same way I approach theatre, filmmaking, poetry or painting. I wish more people would take that point of view. It would help the industry to move on,” said the forthright developer, before adding that he says these things because he cares.
“I dont just say these things to annoy, or to try and sound cleverer than anyone else.”
Never one to hold his tongue, Cage also gave his thoughts on Sonys DualShock controller, calling the peripheral an imminent dinosaur.
“Maybe there will be more devices in the near future in the same direction [as the PlayStation Move] but which work slightly differently that will open new ground. I can clearly see how DualShock is the end of an era and we need to move to something else as an industry,” said Cage. “I dont know if Kinect or Move are the ultimate answer. Its up to console manufacturers to bring [a new device]. But something will happen, hopefully soon.”
Quantic Dreams Heavy Rain recently won three BAFTAs for its murder mystery tale about the Origami Killer, including the gong for best story.
Cage has previously confirmed that Quantic Dreams next project will not be connected to Heavy Rain.
