GTA IV DLC to take 12-20 hours to complete, sets standard for DLC

Depending on skill level and amount of time you spend messing around, Rockstar expects The Lost and Damned to take anywhere from 12-20 hours to complete. And that's just the single-player story. For $20 (1,600 MSP), L&D offers a full-fledged campaign, new locations, new mini-games (arm wrestling!), refined gameplay mechanics, new vehicles, new weapons, a hefty new soundtrack, new DJs, new TV shows, new Internet sites, and new multiplayer. One thing's for certain: Rockstar isn't dicking around with horse armor.

Massive layoff at Xbox division - closes studio

Microsoft recently announced that the company would be laying-off 5,000 employees due to a drop in profits. This is the first mass layoff in the history of Microsoft. However, news has trickled out that the Xbox division will be suffering the brunt of the job cuts. Word has been trickling out that the Entertainment and Devices Division (EDD) will receive the brunt of the mass layoff. The EDD division consists of the Zune, PC gaming and the massive Xbox division. The EDD is headed up by the well known faces: Shane Kim, Don Matttrick, Phil Spencer and the friendly Aaron Greenberg.

Word has come out that Microsoft owned site, Gamerscore Blog has ceased operation. Many of the former employees have revealed that all of the writers have been laid off. Also, notorious VentureBeat writer Dean Takahashi, revealed that approximately 30 percent of Microsofts internal video game testers have been laid off. What in the world is Microsoft thinking by laying off quality assurance testers for the video game division? The journalist also stated that the game division will receive a massive management restructuring next week. In the corporate world, management restructuring usually means firing and consolidating. Could this be the end of Aaron Greenberg? I sure hope not.Microsoft also announced today that the company will be shutting down one of its longest running game studio, ACES. The studio has been responsible for various franchises such as long time veteran, Flight Simulator.

According to Microsoft the decision to shut down the studio was made in order “to align our[Microsoft's] people against our[Microsoft's] highest priorities.” Obviously the highest priority for Microsoft is Windows. I have talked about Microsofts shift towards the casual market and these events seem to indicate that the change will not be gradual but possibly abrupt. There is also some indication from Microsoft that the company wants to focus more on its core business such as Windows. This is in contrast to Sony who is laying-off employees in its core businesses and leaving the gaming division alone (for now). Could we see a leaner Xbox division by next month?

New Mortal Kombat game in the works

Contained within a Midway press release stating that Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe has shipped 1.8 million units, MK co-founder Ed Boon revealed that the team are already hard at work on another game.
“Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe was the result of countless hours of hard work by many people, and seeing the game surpass the million-seller plateau makes it worth all the effort,” said Boon.
“Were already hard at work on our next version of Mortal Kombat, and look forward to being able to reveal more details in the future.”
    Full release after the break.

    K Famitsu 360:

    MS
    - didn't expect the hardware sales to grow as much as they did
    - gears 2 is in the process of being properly localized for JP, some stuff must be cut
    - not considering BD version of 360. they slyly dodge the question of a slim 360, but seems something will happen

    Bandai Namco
    - surprised how well ToV sold. Gundam Musou 2 also did well
    - Naruto Narutimate Storm (sp?) showed Japan's ability to put out a "super anime" game, or something
    - plan to release 5-6 games on 360 this year. since it's HD they are all big titles
    - some new IP
    - i-mas DLC sales were a massive surprise. even though they don't sell overseas, the dev costs are totally covered

    Bethesda
    - bully and fallout 3 left a good impression
    - the cancellation of star trek legacy was because the contract had run out, even though the dev was basically done
    - fallout 3 sales were good
    - will release multiple titles in 2009, including a surprising big project using another firm's IP
    - will not release any games with an average review score less than 80

    Capcom
    - RE5 will sell 5-6 million. Within Japan, expect sales of 500k on one of the platforms
    - demo was very popular
    - 2009 will be multi-platform year
    - sequels to Dead Rising and Lost Planet will be put out. They'll be multiplatform, but the 360 versions will have something a little different

    Codemasters
    - will probably release Dirt in japan too (Grid came out this month)
    - thinking about a sequel to Overlord
    - Xbox users love their games

    EA
    - Japan can expect Dante's Inferno
    - considering selling retail games online, like they are doing with ps3
    - will release close to 2008's number of games (17) this year

    Atlus
    - developing for 360

    5pb
    - putting lots of effort into 360 this year
    - 3D is expensive so prefer 2D dev
    - shooting games future will depend on how well dodonpachi and ketsui sell

    From Software
    - Ninja Blade coming out simultaneously worldwide (is it!?)
    - Developing a 360 only game after Ninja Blade will be very difficult, waiting to see how the Japan market goes

    Koei
    - gundam musou 2 sold 60k on 360, feeling some positive response from the market
    - including ports, will release quite a few games this year
    - planning some new IP too
    - will also make full use of Tecmo's skills

    Q
    - Mizuguchi not involved much in N3 II - devs are feelplus
    - info will come out in spring
    - planning collaboration with atari

    Sega
    - feel 360 is holding up well
    - planning a (some?) big title besides Bayonetta. it's multi but they expect 360 owners will be happy nevertheless

Each year, at around this time, Edge attempts to tally up the biggest selling games of the previous 12 months. Using a variety of sources, we try to estimate sales of games across North America and Europe.

    10. Gears of War 2

    Microsoft
    Xbox 360 Exclusive
    4 million
    November
    Reviews: 94%

"Just when you think Epic has pulled out all the stops - and can't fit any more Corpsers on the screen at once - it'll throw two more at you. Maybe three. And a hundred Locust foot soldiers. And blow up the floor."
    - Andy Robinson, CVG.

    9. Star Wars: The Force Unleashed

    LucasArts
    Multiple Platforms
    5 million
    September
    Reviews: 73%

"Who knew that throwing Stormtroopers around like they were rag dolls could be so... boring?"
    - Chris Kohler , Wired.

    8. FIFA 09

    Electronic Arts
    Multiple Platforms
    5 million
    October
    Reviews: 88%

"The best addition, though, is undoubtedly the glorious 10-vs.-10 Be A Pro online mode, which lets every participant commit to a single position for the duration. Whether you spoil a drive-by botching a play or score a gamewinning goal in the final seconds, this is the closest a game has ever come to replicating the nervous spotlight of responsibility that defines the stadium experiences of real-life players. Youll never want to play any other way again."
    - Cameron Lewis, Official Xbox Magazine.

    7. Madden NFL 09

    Electronic Arts
    Multiple Platforms
    6 million
    August
    Reviews: 86%

"Visually, an improved graphics engine carries Madden NFL '09, and allows us to forgive EA for shanking the PlayStation 3's Madden 08 last year with its inferior visuals and framerate. Madden NFL 09 is a performer with its spot-on 60 frames per second, 720p resolution, and very clean picture quality."
    - Arnold Katayev, PSXExtreme.

    6. Call of Duty 5: World at War

    Activision Blizzard
    Multiple Platforms
    7 million
    November
    Reviews: 85%

"I didnt want to play another World War II title. I didnt want to revisit a theater that has been done to death. Yhankfully Treyarchs sophomore effort has changed my mind. Call of Duty: World at War is a fantastic title. "
    - Ron Burke, GamingTrend.

    5. Super Smash Bros. Brawl

    Nintendo
    Wii Exclusive
    7 Million

    Reviews: 93%

"There are few games that can illicit a cheer from a crowd of onlookers like Smash Bros. It's something about the insanity of it all, bombs dropping here, flames bursting there, turnips being thrown with reckless abandon. Even if you're on the sidelines, you can help but watch, entranced."
    - Russ Frushtick, UGO.

    4. Wii Fit

"With Wii Fit, Nintendo has made exercising enjoyable. Not as enjoyable as eating a giant burger obviously, but it's a good effort."
    - Ellie Gibson, Eurogamer.
    3. Guitar Hero - Various

(includes World Tour, On Tour, Aerosmith etc.)
    Activision Blizzard
    10 million

"By far and away the best rhythm game available on the market today."
    - Neon Kelly, Videogamer.

    2. Mario Kart Wii

    Nintendo
    Wii Exclusive
    11 Million
    April
    Reviews: 82%

"Mario Kart Wii's colossal roster humors fans craving copious unlockables, but Nintendo's clearly scraping the bottom of the Mushroom Kingdom's barrel in an attempt to shoehorn new characters into each successive installment. C'mon, Baby Peach and Baby Daisy? Seriously?"
    - Shane Bettenhausen. 1-Up.

    1. Grand Theft Auto IV

    Take Two
    Xbox 360; PS3; PC
    13 Million
    April
    Reviews: 97%

"As Niko becomes mired in the death throes of American organized crime, he begins to become more self-aware. Niko's struggles with his ruthless nature never inhibit the gameplay, but instead enhance the emotional gravity of a brilliant storyline. The more absurd the action becomes, the greater we feel the very real pathos of Niko Bellic."
    - Hilary Goldstein, IGN.
