For most of this year gamers the world over have been preoccupied with discussing 2013’s exciting new console launches. We’ve hung on Sony and Microsoft’s every word, waiting for confirmation of just when the next generation was set to arrive.
The truth is, we knew all along. September 17.
PlayStation 4 and Xbox One may be arriving in November but GTA V is already poised to upstage the pair of them. With respect to the many tremendously exciting games headed to PS4 and Xbox One later this year, GTA V already feels like a potent reminder that ambition, confidence and, above all, gameplay beats a brand new box of chips and wires every time.
Never mind November; I suspect the next generation will start when GTA V says it is does.

    General:

    • Flying under bridges achievements will return from GTAIV. There are exactly 50 bridges to fly under.
    • Every shopfront in the game is unique.
    • Night time is more realistic and is a big improvement from IVs "darkness". At a certain part of Blaine County the only real source of light were Trevor's vehicle headlamps.
    • Animals yelp when hit by a vehicle.
    • Neon signs actually have a buzzing noise.
    • Helicopter wreckage can be found from high above in the sky.
    • Although map is open from the start, it still has a huge element of discovery.
    • Grove Street will be making a return.
    • GTAV feels like a "best of R* experience" because of the elements from all of R*'s greatest games.

    Characters:

    • Franklin usually hangs out in the ghetto, Trevor in the wastelands, and Michael in the business districts.
    • Your character's health regenrates to 50% only.
    • Sometimes you will be prompted to use certain characters - at other times you can choose yourself.
    • A coloured flash on screen will signal a switch to a particular character. Michael is blue, Franklin is green, and Trevor is orange.
    • One of a kind encounters may occur such as Lamar acting agressively towards a hobo.
    • Chop belongs to Lamar, not Franklin.
    • Chop can distract enemies, giving an advantage against them.
    • Each protagonist has a very distinctive walk and feel to them.

    Weapons:

    • The main weapon wheel is broken down into a series of subcategories; after scrolling with the stick to the weapon type you want, left and right on the D-pad will cycle between additional individual weapons.
    • The wheel will store all of the weapons you collect and you will never lose them, even if they run out of ammo or you get busted.
    • Sniper Rifles can be upgraded with a Thermo Scope which can be activated on the run.
    • Miniguns destroy vehicle almost instantly.
    • The ability to fire whilst prone and rolling around returns from Max Payne 3.

    Vehicles:

    • There are four different in-vehicle views. However the cockpit view will not be included.
    • Trains are drivable.
    • if a saved vehicle is abandoned or destroyed, it can be recovered (for a fee) at the local impound lot.
    • Each vehicle type has a unique type of handling, for example the pick-up truck doesn't stick to the road as well as a supercar.
    • Pedestrians react differently to carjackings now, such as speeding off when aimed or shot at with a weapon.
    • Drivers flip you off after collisions.
    • Car crashes usually leave trails of fuel, which can in turn be used to blow them up.
    • Chopper controls are extremely alike to GTAIV, and landing them is more straightforward.
    • Engine realism such as engine stuttering and black smoke shooting out was noted.
    • Car explosions and aftermath much more realistic than IV's.
    • Hearses are NOT good for escaping cops.

    Missions:

    • There are various ways to tackle a one mission objective.
    • When missions end, the aftermath "spills over" into freeroam - as noted when a car is blown up at the end of a mission, fire engines will rush to the still destroyed car, whereas in IV the world would simply "reset".
    • There will be split second decision makings which adds a Hollywood-esque feels to the gameplay.
    • Franklin has access to supercars immediately.
    • "Derailed" involves Trevor chasing a train of cargo on a dirtbike (All you had to do was follow the damn train Trevor).
    • At one point in "Nervous Ron" a light is shot out to prevent a dead body being discovered.
    • "Vinewood Babylon" involves using a weapon similar to what Bruce Willis uses to blast off Jack Blacks arm in "The Jackal".
    • One of the missions shown involved breaking the target out of the FIB building.
    • If you go up to a mission marker, you go straight into a cutscene and straight out smoothly, similar to Max Payne 3.

    Police Encounters:

    • Unlike GTAIV's wanted system, every officer and police car has its own search circle.
    • Blowing up a cop car will get you a wanted level of 1 star.
    • You receive a 2 star wanted level when flying over the prison.

GTA V's gangs voiced by real gang member

Grand Theft Auto 5's gangs are voiced by real gang members, producer Lazlow Jones has revealed – including one who was released from prison the day before recording.

"When we record all these ambient characters that are in the world we go towards authenticity," Lazlow told US radio station WGN. "So in the game, part of the element of the story is that there's rival gangs.

"There's black gangs, there's Latino gangs, and we recruited a guy who gets gang members, like actual gang members, real gang members. I mean, El Salvadorian gang dudes with amazing tattoos and one of which literally had gotten out of prison the day before. And we brought these guys in to record the gang characters because you know, you don't want a goofy LA actor who went to a fancy school trying to be a hard gang member. There's nothing worse than that."

Lazlow believes the answer is to "find the real terrifying people and say, can you come in here please. "And they look at the lines and they say, 'I wouldn't say that. If I was upset at another gang, I wouldn't say that'. So... say what you would say. Authenticity, you know?

"There's a lot of sessions that we would have where we would just throw the script on the floor and be like, this thing we wrote is irrelevant, let's just work out something real."

Grand Theft Auto V is the most expensive video game production in history, beats most big-budget Hollywood film
At this point there is no doubt about it: Grand Theft Auto V is the single biggest video game in history.

Based on a report from Scottish newspaper The Scotsman, Rockstar’s upcoming open-world game Grand Theft Auto V was made on a marketing and development budget of £170 million (or $265 million). This makes it the most expensive video game production in history. In comparison with Hollywood films, it is second only to Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End - the current record-holder for the most expensive film production – which had a $300 million budget.

In development for the past five years, Take-Two Interactive and Rockstar have put everything into making sure GTA V is the greatest open-world game ever. With over 2.5 million pre-orders already in just the US, analysts are expecting it to be one of the most-sold games of this console generation. GTA IV has so far sold over 25 million copies; how well will GTA V do?

IT IS the dark Scots vision of the American way of life set to create computer game history and make £1 billion in sales.

From bank heists and skydiving through to stock trading and yoga, the sprawling world of Grand Theft Auto V (GTA V) is set to redefine the parameters of video gaming on its release next week.

Scattered with flashes of ribald Caledonian humour and in-jokes, the title is the brainchild of Rockstar North, a studio based in Edinburgh’s Greenside Row.

Five years in the making, the game’s development and marketing budget of £170 million is the equivalent of a blockbuster film. Such is the success of the series, industry experts believe its latest incarnation will rewrite the record books, shifting 25 million copies in the first year alone, achieving sales of £1bn.

Confidence in the release is such that shares in Take-Two Interactive, Rockstar’s parent firm, have nearly doubled in value in the past year.

The new game revolves around a satirical recreation of southern California. With players able to switch between three protagonists, the 49-square-mile world boasts a welter of activities, such as scuba diving with sharks and hijacking trains.

For those who have watched the franchise grow from its humble roots in an office in Dundee’s Perth Road – the first base for Rockstar’s predecessor, DMA Design – to arguably the largest entertainment product in the world, there is little doubt the new release will be a huge hit.

“By any sort of commercial scale, Grand Theft Auto is easily Scotland’s largest cultural export ever. The series has sold something like 135 million copies so far,” said Brian *Baglow, who worked as a writer on the first GTA game and now runs the Scottish Games Network, an umbrella body for the nation’s games sector. “It’s coming up to 17 years since GTA began and it’s become something I don’t think anyone involved with the original game would have expected.

“The series has come on not just in leaps and bounds, but in long jumps since then. It’s become far more than the sum of its parts, it’s a fully global phenomenon. This is the fifth major release, and the nice thing is that all of them have been made here in Scotland.”

David Kushner, the author of Jacked: The Outlaw Story Of Grand Theft Auto, agreed: “I wouldn’t be surprised if it sets records. GTA IV ended up in Guinness World Records so I would certainly anticipate the new game will do just as well.”

In order to realise their most ambitious game yet, Rockstar North’s 300-strong staff analysed census data, vehicle sales records and hundreds of thousands of photographs to depict Los Angeles and its environs.

Aaron Garbut, a University of Dundee graduate who is the series art director, made several visits to California, consulting off-duty police officers and architectural historians to create a bustling alternate *reality.

He said: “I think, most of all, what we’ve done is create a world that you can lose yourself in. A place that’s interesting and fun to live in. I’ve effectively lived more in the game world than I have in Edinburgh over the past several years as we’ve filled it out.”

Rockstar North is likely to face criticism in some quarters following GTA V’s release on 17 September, given that players are able to visit strip clubs and use marijuana, while real-life gang members are among the voice cast.

Such controversy, Baglow believes, overlooks the fact that GTA has become a cornerstone of modern entertainment.

“For many people in power globally, GTA is just a great big red flashing light because it’s perceived as something bad and violent, defined by tabloid hysteria,” he said. “But if the series was just about gratuitous violence, it would not have achieved the sales and success it has.

“It is a massive cultural and creative success. It’s arguably bigger than the next Star Wars film, and the games industry has been behind GTA from the get-go. I’d really like to see the UK government acknowledge the fact one of the biggest entertainment franchises in the world was made here.”

Although it is a homage to an idealised America, the Scottish roots of GTA V will be evident. An in-game stock exchange goes by the name of Bawsaq, for example, while one of the vast bridges in the game’s world is a replica of the Forth Road Bridge.

Baglow said: “We can sometimes have a schizophrenic idea about culture in Scotland. There’s an idea that because GTA is set in contemporary America, it has nothing to do with this country. On the other hand, we are critical of things dripping with tartan, shortbread and wee Scottie dogs.

“This isn’t something exclusive to video games, it’s the entire cultural sector. Until we feel confident enough to go out and achieve a big product which happens to have been made in Scotland, but isn’t necessarily Scottish, I think we will keep running into problems.”
