Apple to join the PSP and DS in handheld market?
: http://www.pocket-lint.co.uk/news/ne...nnounced.phtmlUsing the iPhone, Apple has plans on entering the handheld gaming market by unveiling the software development kit for the phone. At an event at Apple's headquarters, Apple announced support for OpenAL, 3D sound, and OpenGL which are all standards that game developers currently develop with.
How can this be done with no joystick or D-pad you ask? Well, the guys over at Apple has given developers access to the iPhone's accelerometer that senses where the phone is on the three axis; similar to the PlayStation 3's sixaxis remote. By moving the phone, gamers will be able to move characters or vehicles on the screen.
During the event, Apple demoed a game titled, Touch Fighter, which allows gamers to control a spacecraft around the screen by of course, tilting the phone.
While this may not sound like a very profitable approach, Apple has contacted game companies such as EA and Sega and asked them to create a game to show that it can be done on the iPhone. EA showed a demo of Spore and Sega demoed Supermonkey Ball, both of which games made use of the accelerometer.
Apple has also patented a method that would automatically determine which games on the iTunes Store are compatible with iPods or iPhones.
With the substantial success of the Nintendo DS and with God of War out and Crisis Core on the way for the PSP, all we can say is 'Good Luck.' You're going to need it.

Sony Knocks Down Walls On Game Businesses
: http://www.thestandard.com/news/2008...ame-businessesFor the longest time, Sonys organizational structure on video games didnt make sense. Sony Computer Entertainment runs the worldwide PlayStation business. But Sony Online Entertainment — the makers of massively multiplayer online games such as EverQuest for the PC — always reported to a different group.
But games are games. And Sony has decided that SOE should now report to Kaz Hirai, the CEO of the PlayStation group. Until now, the online games division headed by John Smedley has reported to Sony Pictures Entertainment. Thats the movie division. Im not sure what casting spells in EverQuest had to do with Spider-Man 3 movies. But thats the way it was.

MS Insider: 60 gig stanard is confirmed, supply issues down to poor planning
According to a rumored MS insider, it is 100% confirmed that the Xbox 360 hard drive is moving to a standard size of 60 GB. "Those configurations are in design verification testing right now. I'd bet that this changeover also contributed to the lack of units. When MS changes major sub-assemblies like this, they try not to over produce the old configurations." he said. He also says that the Microsofts supply issues in February were down to poor planning, supply chain and quality issues restricting production. He makes t clear that it was not a case of demand out stripping supply.
"I have to wonder what the real reasons are that they couldn't ship enough units. They might have converted production capacity for repair. This quarter is traditionally the peak load for returns, which lags peak holiday sales. They may have had supply chain problems of some type. Yield issues with the new CPU. Other quality issues, like a new high fail rate defect that limited how many they could make. Etc. "
As for larger HD's (hard drives), that was always the plan for later in the life cycle. But size was always TBD (to be determined). One consideration you didn't mention regarding the decision of BR (Blu-Ray) vs. downloaded content is streaming speed. I don't know about you guys, but I have BB (broadband) cable to my PC, and 802.1b/g wireless to my 360. It's pretty damn slow to get anything of size onto the 360. I can drive to the video store and back in less time than I could download an HD movie. That would seem to push them towards BR as the HD source for customer satisfaction.
Chart-Track: Xbox 360 up 35-40 percent following price cuts
Chart-Track have said that sales of the Xbox 360 went up 35-40 percent over the weekend following the European price cuts. However Chart Track said its too early to read into this figure at the moment and that the real litmus test would be over the next three to four weeks.
