Fans Get Positive Response From Yoshida (Sony) Regarding Shenmue 3

Shuhei Yoshida, President of Worldwide Studios, Sony Computer Entertainment, has responded to a recent Twitter post from Shenmue fans asking for the revival of the series. The post shows fans holding up individuals letters which spell out "Thank you Sony for listening to us. Please #SaveShenmue."
@giocorsi @yosp @amboyes Fans have come together thanking Sony in a earnest plea to #SaveShenmue pic.twitter.com/yGjYg59nOa
    — Shenmue Dojo (@Shenmue_Dojo) January 13, 2014
Yoshida was needlessly was impressed by their efforts.
    @Shenmue_Dojo @giocorsi @amboyes very nice!
    — Shuhei Yoshida (@yosp) January 13, 2014
Ever since GDC 13, Sony has become somewhat a beacon of hope when it comes to the Shenmue series. The idea of being able to play Shenmue 3, on a next-gen system no less, has sparked an online revolution among fans who are now aiming all their efforts at Sony instead of just SEGA.

If there is one series that honestly deserves a second chance, it's Shenmue. The series has pioneered not just free roam exploration but tapped into cultural experiences which can only be seen in Japan or in China. I do hope this series make a come back as I, like many others, wish to see Ryo depart from that deep dark cave.
    exclusive Shenmue 3....

    FUCK YEAH!

I Help Make Video Games, And I'm Sick Of The Hatred From Gamers

The following editorial was written by a developer who has been testing and making games for five years. The developer asked to be kept anonymous.
Dear consumers and fans of video games,
You don't know me. But you might know some of the games I've helped create. And as I come to a close on another one of the AAA titles I have worked on, I begin to get excited for all of the people that will love our game, and I begin to loathe those who will hate it.2
Out of the millions around the globe who will pick up our game and love it, only thousands will flock to the Internet and scream about how much it sucks—how it's broken, how it's buggy, how it stinks so much. Of course, there will always be critics. The world needs them. But I don't think there's ever justification for the personalized negative attacks, the hate speech, and the borderline cruelty to those who worked 12+ hours for days, weeks, months, and, in some cases, years, to get games in the best possible shape.
Granted, feedback is warranted. If we fucked up and our game is broken, you should tell us. I don't ever want to ship a broken product. But stuff like "I hope the idiot people who made this just kill themselves after they kill their family" makes me want to quit my job and move to another industry. Seeing statements like that spread across the Internet—seeing insults hurled at hard-working developers who love the games they work on—just makes me lose hope in people. 345
I'm not Cliff Bleszinski. I'm not Ken Levine. I'm just a guy who has seen a lot of hatred that is undeserved for a medium that really is just a piece of entertainment. I'm relatively new to the field—I've been working in games for five years—but I have never seen this level of hatred in any other industry. Do thousands of people say they want to kill Tom Cruise if he plays a scene in a way they don't like? They might criticize it, but they don't tell him to go kill himself because they disliked what he did. Honestly, at times this hatred makes me not want to work in games anymore. 678
I come to work and put in 80 hours some weeks not because I have to, but because I love what I do. There are many out there like me. For some, yes, it is about the money, but I'm a salaried employee. I want my games to do well. I want people to love them. 9

I'm not Cliff Bleszinski. I'm not Ken Levine. I'm just a guy who has seen a lot of hatred that is undeserved for a medium that really is just a piece of entertainment.

And if someone were to come out and say something horrible, like the type of insults I see on message boards, or on social networks, or in colleagues' email inboxes... It just baffles me that this has become the norm. How is it acceptable? Most gamers have no idea what really goes into software development—or how difficult it is to get hundreds of people coordinated and working together on a project—and it sometimes drives me crazy to see their vitriolic comments.10
It's not that I want anyone to censor themselves. I just want more people to think about what it is that they're saying, and maybe think twice about degrading the people who put their time and energy into making games—even when those games don't turn out so great.
Let us not ever forget that games are made by people who love them. I eat, sleep, and breathe video games, and they will always be a part of my life.
It's important to remember that not every game is on the same playing field. Game developers that are not owned by first-party publishers like Sony and Microsoft tend to have fewer resources and smaller wallets, yet they are often asked to create games on par with the bigger guys, whose budgets tower over their competitors'. During the half-decade I've worked in gaming, I have had the opportunity to work for a publisher, a first-party developer, and an independent developer. In those five short years I have seen people turn their passion into products both good and bad, and what we've done together has been truly amazing.

Let us not ever forget that games are made by people who love them.

Game developers don't just sit in front of their computers drawing doodles and typing out code—we create fun out of thin air. We take hundreds of hours of discussions, refinements, and debates, and we make them appear on screen. Game developers make art.1112
So before you send death threats to people, or give out zeroes on Metacritic, or write unnecessarily mean things about games you've spent just a few hours on, remember that what you're playing is the culmination of years of someone's life. Usually it's not just one life, but tens, or hundreds, or even thousands of people who wake up every day at the crack of dawn thinking about the experiences they're going to create. 13
The video game industry is dominated by introverts—creative, passionate people who might struggle with depression due to the nature of their jobs, the long hours, the harsh criticism, and the harsher fans. One comment that seems insignificant to you might cut a developer's mind like a razor blade. 14
So if we the developers give you the fans a broken product, let us know. If our game has issues, talk about them. But please be respectful. Be kind to the people who help make and produce the games that you love—and especially to the people who make the games you don't love. Nobody deserves to be treated like less than a human being.15
Remember that your words—yes, your words—have an impact on the people who make video games. No matter who you are. Yours might be the one Internet comment that changes a developer's life.

A newly discovered Sony patent has us very intrigued. The use of peripherals is steadily becoming less appealing, but the application of this new, strange technology could open up new avenues of AR gaming. The new patent details,

A block tool, which can be assembled by a user, is configured with multiple types of blocks and is shot by a camera for capturing a still image or a moving image. The position coordinates of a marker of the square-pillar block in a three-dimensional space are obtained by image recognition. Also, a connecting position and the type of each block, a gradient vector of the square-pillar block, an angle between two blocks constituting the square-pillar block, and the respective blocks lengths are obtained so as to derive the shape, posture, and position of the block tool, and corresponding information processing is then performed.
The rest of the verbiage within the patent goes into detail of how this specific invention could be utilized in an AR environment. This “build your own” style controller could be used in conjunction with the PlayStation Camera to bring a solid, interactive object into an augmented reality environment.

Many of the diagrams show different objects built using the block assembly method. Sensors located at pivot, or connection points would help the item take shape in the AR environment. The most practical of the diagrams shows the use of the block tool to create weapons. Different assemblages are interpreted by image recognition.

In my estimation these items could hypothetically be skinned to represent actual combat weaponry, or in the case of FIG.10 an animal. In effect, these items would help immerse the player into the projected AR environment by creating a physical connection to it, and possibly physical feedback if the controller makes use of haptics.

As always, theres no guarantee this patent will see the light of day, but when we stumbled upon what we coined as PlayStation Remix, it turned out to be PlayStation Now.

Next Hitman Games From Io-Interactive Coming to PC & Next-Gen Consoles: Includes Sandbox Levels and More

With the mystery of who is working on which Hitman games solved, Io-Interactive has given an update regarding their upcoming AAA Hitman for the PC and next-gen consoles, which has Ios “total focus.”

After revealing how it will feature an Agent 47 at the prime of his career who travels the globe, with the support of handler Diana Burnwood and the entire ICA, Io touched upon what we can expect this time around:

The game concentrates on the core Hitman fantasy of using a wide range of tools to take out a diverse group of targets across expansive, exotic locations around the world. We are building this game on the backbone of the Glacier 2 engine, using the best parts and what we have learnt through Hitman: Absolution and drawing inspiration from past titles like Contracts and Blood Money to fulfill the core Hitman fantasy. That means were packing in an extreme level of detail on the largest levels we have ever built for a Hitman game.
Weve adopted an open, non-linear level design approach to the game, ensuring the game will play out across huge, checkpoint-free, sandbox levels. Our aim is to create living, breathing and believable levels which will allow gamers to play around with the AI to create those unique moments every fan of the Hitman franchise loves.

In addition to removing Agent 47′s “magic pockets” for the next game, it was announced that Contracts Mode will be back. This means youll be able to create and build challenges, then share them with everyone.
No release window was given, but we can expect to hear more about thisHitman title as 2014 progresses.

Fallout 4 or Elder Scrolls 6? Bethesda staffs up for "bleeding-edge" next gen RPGs
Battlecry Studios also advertises for work on "undisclosed AAA PC and next gen console game"

Of all the companies with skeletons in the closet, few seem more burdened with secrets right now than ZeniMax Media and its subsidiary Bethesda Softworks, publisher of the Elder Scrolls and Fallout titles.

There's Prey 2, for one thing - Human Head's open world action project has been floating in limbofor years, and may have been transferred to another studio, reportedly Dishonored developer Arkane. For another, there's id Software's even more overdue DOOM 4, which has allegedly beensent back to square one after a period of mismanagement, presumably not helped by the departure of programming guru John Carmack. And finally, the increasingly mythical Fallout 4, the subject of many a fan hoax in recent months.

PR sources continue to observe radio silence in regards to all these titles. It's probable they won't budge as regards the below job listings, either, which suggest that Bethesda Game Studios has another Elder Scrolls or Fallout-style RPG on the boil. Hardly the most shocking news, no - we already know that Skyrim game director Todd Howard has a game on the boil that's "100% unrelated" to the forthcoming Elder Scrolls Online.

A programmer is sought "to join our team that is pushing the bleeding-edge of RPG development for the PC and consoles". Desired applicant traits include a knowledge of DirectX 11 and experience with all currently available consoles, so a cross-gen release seems likely.

Bethesda also needs a quest designer to "[design] and [document] stories and quests for future next generation products". According to the listing, "experience with The Elder Scrolls Construction Set or GECK [is] a plus", as is "experience with previous Bethesda games". GECK stands for "Garden of Eden Creation Kit" in the world of Fallout, in case you'd forgotten: it's also the name of a set of Fallout modding tools. The publisher would like to hear from a prospective level designer with similar experience.

Last but not least, an executive producer is sought who has "comprehensive knowledge of Action/Adventure/Shooter product genres". The mention of "shooter" tips the balance of probability towards a new Fallout; it's faintly disturbing that experience with role-playing games isn't expected, though as Baronyx points out, there are plenty of those already at Bethesda HQ.

ZeniMax Media's new horse Battlecry Studios is also staffing up - in particular, it's going bananas on new server engineers and gameplay engineers who've crafted online games. This naturally corroborates October 2012's report on the development of a free-to-play MMO for consoles and PC.

Battlecry also needs a senior environment artist to work on "an undisclosed AAA PC and next-generation console game", plus a level designer "with a passion for building world class competitive multiplayer maps" and "shooter/action game experience".

Iwata: "We are thinking about a new business structure" [for Nintendo]

"We cannot continue a business without winning," Iwata said on Friday during a press conference attended by Bloomberg. "We must take a skeptical approach whether we can still simply make game players, offer them in the same way as in the past for 20,000 yen or 30,000 yen, and sell titles for a couple of thousand yen each.

"We are thinking about a new business structure," Iwata added. "Given the expansion of smart devices, we are naturally studying how smart devices can be used to grow the game-player business. It's not as simple as enabling Mario to move on a smartphone."

Investors and analysts have urged Nintendo to broaden its horizons and boost profits by embracing smartphones on multiple occasions over the past few years, but Iwata has always insisted that his responsibility is to plan for the long term, not simply to make a quick buck.

Take-Two and Rockstar Games could be gearing up for the announcement and release of the third title in the Red Dead series, according to a report by Baird Equity Research.

The research firm expects key announcements this year in order for Take-Two to meet guidelines it has issued to shareholders for the next financial year.

“Take Two continues to produce some of the highest-quality console and PC games, which we believe should transition well on next-gen platforms,” said analyst Colin Sebastian in the 2014 Video Game Industry Predictions and Q4 Results Preview.

“We expect product announcements over the next year such as extending GTA V to other platforms (e.g., PC, next-gen consoles), the next Red Dead, etc., to help improve revenue and earnings visibility. In addition, the company has significant potential to grow digital/onnline revenues, which should help improve gross margins and add visibility to growth.”

He added: “We expect PC version of GTA V in 2014. Recently, Amazon.com posted a product listing for a PC-version of the companys blockbuster franchise Grand Theft Auto V (GTA). While a PC version would not be a big surprise, this indirect confirmation of the game helps to provide some added visibility to consensus F2015 (Mar) estimates.

“In fact, we have previously published that GTA-extensions are in the development pipeline, and likely needed for the company to hit FY targets. We also believe the next Red Dead game is in the works potentially for a 2014 launch.”
