Microsoft: XBL avatars 'fresher' than Home
LOLMicrosoft said Monday that the introduction of Xbox Live avatars is a much fresher approach than the competition. The company confirmed the system of virtual characters at its E3 press conference. The avatars seemed to be a cross between the Nintendo Wiis stylized Miis and the realistic avatars on Sonys PlayStation Home, which Microsoft claimed is only for hardcore gamers. “Weve made Xbox Live more personal than ever before with these avatars – you can express your personality and style to reflect who you are, or who you want to be,” Microsofts John Schappert announced at E3.
According to Microsoft, with the new Xbox 360 experience, gamers can personalize their entertainment like never before. They can create their own avatar, designed exclusively by Rare, and jump into a party with friends from around the world.
“It used to be that you had to launch hardware to bring new experiences to users, what were going to prove is that software can actually change the experience overnight,” David Hufford, a senior director at Xbox, told The Financial Times.
Hufford claimed that Microsofts approach would have wider appeal than Sonys much delayed PlayStation Home.
“Home is only for the hardcore frankly, we think were taking a much fresher approach, offering much more social experiences,” he said.

Flagship Studios: We're Not Dead! We Just Fired Everyone!
We're Not Dead! We Just Fired Everyone!The past several days have been filled with speculation that 'Hellgate: London' developer Flagship Studios has closed its doors and that Flagship's parent company has taken over the rights of Hellgate: London. However, in a statement released by Flagship Studios, CEO Bill Roper explains that the development house founded by former Diablo II members has not shut down, but has laid off most of its workforce.
Roper also went on to explain that because of the troubled times at Flagship Studios, they will no longer be accepting new subscribers to 'Hellgate: London', but those who are already playing the game will now be playing for free.

New 360 To Upscale DVDs
This past week Microsoft announced that they would be lowering the price of the 20GB Xbox and introducing a new model for $349.99 with a 60GB hard drive. This larger amount of storage will come in handy when the new system update hits so that you can store your games. Circuit city is now listing this new model with a release on August 8th, but they also gave some more information about the system,

Too Human - Reclassified MA 15+ To M, PC Version Hinted At?
The OFLC's classification database is packed full of surprises, both sad and delightful. The most recent of these was not one, but two ratings for Silicon Knights' Too Human. Why would a game get two (or more) ratings? Most of the time it's because a game is released on multiple platforms, but not simultaneously, so the later release has to be classified separately.
However, this is not the case for the Xbox 360-only Too Human.
The first entry for the title is dated May 30, and smacks the game with an "MA 15+". Yet, the second entry on June 18 shows it with the softer "M". My first thought was "Ah damn, not more censorship!", so I contacted Microsoft to find out what the deal was.
According to the publisher, each rating is indeed based on a different build. While there was no official comment regarding the changes to the game, and the need for a revised rating, it stands to reason the earlier version contained stronger themes. Whatever those themes were, it was enough to push Too Human out of the rather heavy MA 15+ bracket and into the softer M, no doubt expanding the game's potential audience.
Now, before you get all excited, this new build was sent out to all regions, not just Australia. It's hard to piece together the sequence of events, but it looks like internationally, Microsoft had a build of the game classified and ready to go. Then, for some reason, Silicon Knights put together a new version with softer themes, which was sent out and - at least in Australia - reclassified.
So, what can we take away from this?:
1) Australia has the same version of Too Human as everyone else;
2) The OFLC classified two versions of the game, with the M-rated one sent to retail and;
3) Both entries are marked "Multi Platform". Does this mean a PC version is on the way?

Universal Studios to Make Video Games
: http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/gaming/a...me-market.htmlUniversal Studios today announced that they will enter the video game market. They decided to make the move in order to work closely on tie-in movie games whilst getting rid of the outside publishers.
WANTED will be the first game from the studio due to hit in early 2009 in which it follows off from where the successful Jolie/Mcavoy film left off.
Interestingly people may remember Universal publishing games before becoming Vivendi Games. Most famously they published the original Crash Bandicoot series on the Psone under Naughty Dogs reign.
Whilst I like the idea off continuing films such as WANTED I think we all know where this is going. Yet more crappy, rushed and licensed games in an already saturated market. Hooray.
It is also worth nothing that many other large Film Studios deal with video games in-house such as Paramount and Warner Bros.
