    BREAKING!!!! Post-Crysis 3, Crytek goes free-to-play

Crytek CEO Cevat Yerli revealed that all future projects from the company will be free-to-play, according to an interview with VideoGamer.com. Yerli noted that "the future is online and free-to-play," and that the company is in a transitional phase, focusing future games and platforms around those models after completing current contracts for games in development.

Crytek's first game to venture into the free-to-play market is Warface, first introduced to Asian regions in late 2010 and coming to North America in 2012. Yerli cited Warface as an example of future titles from the company, which "implies budgets of between $10 million to $30 million... but at the price-point of $0 entry."

Yerli explained that the free-to-play business model is the most user-friendly, as opposed to premium content structures. "If you look at what kind of games are done in the packaged goods market, with DLCs and premium services and whatnot, it's literally milking the customers to death," he said.

Crytek's free-to-play games will be supported by its game streaming network Gface, which went into beta in February.

Sony: why we're launching new IP this late in the console cycle

Sony was one of the few major publishers to launch brand new core IP at this year's E3 show, debuting Quantic Dream's Beyond: Two Souls and showing more of Naughty Dog's The Last of Us.
Why, when perceived wisdom dictates that new IP has the best chance of success at the beginning of a console's life span, was it spending big on two risky new brands this late in the current hardware generation?
According to incoming PlayStation CEO Andrew House, Sony believes it's the duty of the platform holder to continue to offer new experiences and attempt to bring in new players.
"It is absolutely critical [to create new ideas]," he told MCV.
"We've always felt that the strength of our platform has been a kind of symbiotic relationship between the platform being created and strengthened by new experiences. And then that reinforcing the strength and one hopes the longevity of the platform overall.
"I've heard conventional wisdom in the industry that says - and it is kind of like an American presidency - that the first two years in a lifecycle is the only chance to innovate with a new audience.
"We take a different view. It is part of the role of a platform holder to have the confidence and to make the investment where necessary to show that six years into a lifecycle, there is a significant audience that is going to actively peruse new IP. And the onus on that is to deliver on those expectations."
Both Beyond, trailered below, and The Last of Us are expected to launch on PlayStation 3 some time next year.

Xbox Live Rewards to (somehow) tie into Achievements this Fall

Soon you'll have new ways to earn Xbox Live Rewards. The official Twitter account for Microsoft's wing that incentivizes friend referrals and surveys with free MS Points has announced Achievement functionality is coming this fall. The problem is we don't exactly know what that means right now.

A tweet issued earlier today simply promises "a new way to earn Rewards based on your Achievements," coming this fall. We hope this means difficult Achievements will net us MS Points – we definitely deserve a bonus for earning all of the Achievements in Avatar: The Legend of Aang: The Burning Earth – but that's speculation until Microsoft gets back to us.

Okami HD to paint a picture on PS3 this fall

If you missed out on Okami or the DS sequel, Okamiden, Capcom's upcoming re-release may suit your needs. Okami is currently being remastered for the PS3, with full 1080p HD graphics and PlayStation Move support.

This is all according to the latest issue of Famitsu, as revealed by Twitter sleuth Sinobi (translated by Andriasang). This Okami remaster is planned to launch on November 1 in Japan, for ¥3990 ($50).

Update: Capcom just sent out a press release confirming the news. Okami HD will launch on PSN this fall, replete with PS3 Trophies and optional PS Move support. It will be priced at $19.99.

Square Enix CEO: No Final Fantasy VII Remake Until Original Has Been Surpassed

The condition for a FFVII remake came during a Q & A session with Square Enix shareholders.
If the company did decide to release a FFVII remake at this point in time, Mr. Wada is alleged to have said something along the lines of, 'the franchise would be done with'.

    ^^ (adriasang)

During the Q&A session of the company's annual shareholder's briefing (transcribed here), Wada was asked the expected question about the much wanted remake. His response was something to the effect of, we'll make a Final Fantasy VII remake once we've made a Final Fantasy game that exceeds the quality of FFVII.
If you get the feeling that this statement belittles Square Enix's current development prowess, you're pretty much spot on. Wada admitted that at present, the company is not making Final Fantasy games that exceed the quality of FFVII. If they were to release a 7 remake right now, the FF franchise would be done with, he said.
