EA want you to pay for weapons in Bad Company Beta

According to reports, EA will be charging for some of the weapons in Bad Company. In the beta of the game, there are 10 guns that are locked and cannot be used, but it says that the weapon can be bought on xbox live marketplace. There are now concerns about the effect this will have in multiplayer.

February Software NPDs: Can Call of Duty 4 Be Stopped?

For the fourth month in a row, Call of Duty 4 on Xbox 360 has reigned supreme atop the sales charts once again. A mere thousand units sold separated it from the number two game, Devil May Cry 4 (also on 360). Wii Play has been a mainstay since it was released, it would seem, and it comes in at number three. The Wii and PS2 versions of Guitar Hero III also managed to stay in the top ten, leading Rock Band on 360 which came in at number ten.
Despite another month of strong sales for the PlayStation 3 (superior to the 360 for the second month in a row) only a single game, Devil May Cry 4, was in the top ten. Are people still not buying Ratchet and Uncharted, or are people simply buying the PS3 to use as a Blu-ray player?
Seeing lost Odyssey make the list was a pleasant surprise, and I suppose I shouldnt be surprised by Turok making the list. I didnt find it to be anything particularly special (and Yahtzee seemed to agree) but whether it was nostalgia or the promise of being able to shoot dinosaurs, it sold just under 200,000 copies.
So, will Call of Duty 4 finally be unseated in March? Well find out in under a month, but something tells me that Rainbow Six Vegas 2 will certainly play a role in the matter.
    February 2008 Software Sales
    1. Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare (Xbox 360) — 296,200
    2. Devil May Cry 4 (Xbox 360) — 295,200
    3. Wii Play (Wii) — 289,700
    4. Devil May Cry 4 (PlayStation 3) — 233,500
    5. Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock (Wii) — 222,900
    6. Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games (Nintendo DS) — 205,600
    7. Lost Odyssey (Xbox 360) — 203,600
    8. Turok (Xbox 360) — 197,700
    9. Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock (PlayStation 2) — 183,800
    10. Rock Band (Xbox 360) — 161,800

Former Xbox boss says consoles to die out within the next 10 years

According to internet reports, Sandy Duncan, the man who ran the European Xbox business for MS believes consoles as we know them today are to die out within the next 10 years. Duncan states that the business model is very risky and there is a definite convergence of other devices such as set top boxes.
The man who set up and ran the European Xbox business for Microsoft, Sandy Duncan, believes that consoles as we know them today will “die out” in the next 5 to 10 years.

“The industry is fundamentally driven by technology. I think dedicated games devices i.e. consoles (and handhelds) will die [out] in the next 5 to 10 years. The business model is very risky and the costs associated with creating new hardware are incredibly high,” Duncan told That VideoGame Blog in an interview to be published tomorrow.

He continued, “There is a definite “convergence” of other devices such as set top boxes. Theres hardly any technology difference between some hard disc video recorders and an Xbox 360 for example. In fact in 5 to 10 years I dont think youll have any box at all under your TV, most of this stuff will be “virtualized” as web services by your content provider.”

Duncan also believes that with the rapid rise of high-speed internet connections, and as game publishers are forced to adjust their business models, top publishers like EA may not be the same companies in 5 years time: “[Look] at how quickly Popcap or Oberon are growing, or look at what has happened to World of Warcraft in the last 3 to 4 years as so many more homes have easy access to decent broadband services. Maybe youll see YoYo Games competing with EA in 5 years… [and] why not ?”

Check out the real facts in The Exploding Barrels “By The Numbers” below.

33 – Average age of gamers

67% - Percentage of American heads of households who play video games

    24% - Percentage of U.S. gamers older than 50 in 2007

    47.6% - Gamers 18 - 49

    24.2% - Gamers older than 50

A survey of 10 Australian retail chains who operate over 2,000 stores reveals that the Microsoft XBox 360 is on the skids with the majority of the chains seeing their gaming growth coming from the Sony PS3 or the Nintendo Wii.

Conducted by ChannelNews and SmartHouse the research also revealed that the most crucial component in the gaming market in 2008 will be new software. Overall retailers said that the PS3 was selling well because it had a Blu ray drive and that the Nintendo Wii was appealling to both women and "Kids" because of it's interactive capability.

The retailers claimed that the Xbox 360 as a brand had suffered from their "Ring of Death" problems in 2007 and that consumers did not see the Microsoft gaming console as "Value" when compared to the PS3 or the Nintendo Wii.

One major retailer said "Both the Sony PS3 and Nintendo Wii appeal to women and families and with Sony now winning the HD format war we can also sell the PS3 as a Blu ray player. This will allow us to also sell Blu ray content".

Another Melbourne based retailer said "The Xbox 360 is dead. We are stocking it because of our relationship with Microsoft however all our energy and marketing is going into the PS3 and the Nintendo Wii unless Microsoft come up with something new or additional marketing dollars. Halo 3 was big on the Xbox but that was about it. They have tried discounting and value add offers and even that is not working. We are even thinking of dumping the console all together".

EA has changed its mind about having weapons as downloadable content in Battlefield: Bad Company. Instead, 5 of the locked weapons in the beta of the game, will now be free in the ordinary version of the game. The other 5 locked weapons will be available who buy the Gold Edition and to those who earn them by getting their "rank up all the way to the top rank, which is rank 25." The game is set for release on 360 & PS3 on June 23, costing $59.99 for the standard edition and $69.99 for the gold edition.

Insiders claim to confirm existance of official Xbox Wiimote known as 'Newton'
8bitjoystick are claiming that they can confirm the existance of an official Xbox Wiimote clone project which currently has a codename of 'Newton'. According to them, the hardrware is still a work in progress and it might be a matter of months before any kind of production gets underway.
I can now confirm the existence of the Xbox Wiimote clone project and I can tell you the project code name : "Newton"

The "Newton" controller's code name is after the physicist Sir Isaac Newton. The internal Microsoft engineering code name is for this controller is "Newton" as in Newtonian Physics relating to gravity, inertia and acceleration. This is not to be confused with the defunct Apple Newton PDA, this is just and internal name, when this controller comes to market it will have a retail name.

The hardware is still being worked on and it might be a couple months before we see leaked shots of prototypes when they start to mass manufacture it but I am sure that there is an early software developer kit and prototype out there.

Microsoft to open Apple like retail shops

According to sources close to Microsoft, the company is hoping to build a retail presence by opening a chain of retail shops dedicated exclusively to Microsoft products. It is believed the stores will be similar to Apple's retail stores.
We can only guess that the shop will be filled with lot of software but its likely to include some peripheral stuff such are keyboards and mice as well as some MP3 Zune players. You can count on some computers but the last paragraph is something we suspect not something that has been confirmed.

If they put all that we just listed, it will definitely look like a Microsoft copy of Apple retail stores. Maybe even some windows phones?

It worked well for apple so Microsoft has the chance.

The 'most powerful existing hand-held' has the potential to emulate PS1/N64/DS games

The Pandora is an upcoming hand-held game system due to be released this year that promises to excel in the areas where the GP32 and GP2X systems couldn't. The creators are calling it the most powerful existing hand-held and say it should be capable of running PSOne games as well as most, if not all, older machines. They even say that the powerful processor and GPU may provide the potential to enable development of emulators for the Nintendo 64 and the Nintendo DS at playable speeds. The unit is about the same size as the Nintendo DS and features: ARM Cortex-A8 CPU running Linux, 800x480 4.3" 16.7 million colours touchscreen LCD, OpenGL 2.0 ES compliant 3D hardware, Wifi 802.11b/g, Dual SDHC card slots, Dual Analogue and Digital gaming controls, 43 button QWERTY and numeric keypad, TV output and High Speed USB Host. The unit is scheduled for release in June/July and will cost around 199 (inc VAT), $330, Euro212 (Ex.VAT).

Future Crytek titles will be multi-platform, no more PC exclusives

The PC Play magazine has released an English version of an interview it did with Cevat Yerli, president of the German Studio Crytek, which is well known for developing Crysis. In the interview they discuss the success and failures of Crysis, but more importantly the state of the PC gaming industry.

Yerli was asked about the risk of going PC exclusive with a high-profile title, and replied with:
“It is certainly. We are suffering currently from the huge piracy that is encompassing Crysis. We seem to lead the charts in piracy by a large margin, a chart leading that is not desirable. I believe thats the core problem of PC Gaming, piracy. To the degree PC Gamers that pirate games inherently destroy the platform. Similar games on consoles sell factors of 4-5 more. It was a big lesson for us and I believe we wont have PC exclusives as we did with Crysis in future. We are going to support PC, but not exclusive anymore.”
