Was the Lack of Big Xbox 360 News at CES a Letdown?

Bill Gates' last keynote ever at CES has come and gone, and Brier Dudley at The Seattle Times believes the lack of a big Xbox 360 announcement at CES was a missed opportunity. What's interesting is not the dismay that Brier has expressed, but rather, what he's dismayed about. Recent rumors were flying around that Microsoft would "finally" integrate an HD-DVD drive into a new Xbox 360 SKU, although the company has constantly reiterated that it has no plans to do so. This rumor, though, wasn't what Brier was expecting.

Rather, Mr. Dudley was expecting to see third party Xbox 360s announced along with a wish-list that included an Xbox branded portable game and media device, and an Xbox with a built-in TV Tuner and DVR type capabilities. While many people have been clamoring for a portable Xbox gaming device for a while, I don't know that there is as much buzz for third-party developed Xbox 360 units. The door, however, is still open for a development of this sort since Microsoft announced that British Telecom would be getting the first rollout of IPTV for the 360.

I'm not sure that Microsoft is willing to let the Xbox brand branch out into the hands of other manufacturers, but the idea is intriguing. Would an IPTV or DVR device with the ability to play Xbox 360 games be more appealing than the console itself? If nothing else, the speculation alone should yield some interesting ideas that Microsoft is sure to attempt to capitalize on.

Ubisoft, Midway MK Team, Sony Sports ban EGM from coverage

According to Hsu, Midways Mortal Kombat development team, Sonys sports game division, and Ubisoft have all allegedly banned EGM from further coverage of their products. The reason: Apparently, they didnt take too kindly to EGMs review coverage of their games. Still, Hsu maintains that EGM “wont treat these products or companies any differently.” We have yet to confirm these allegations with the publishers mentioned. However, if the editorials claims are accurate, VGMWatch.com is certainly disappointed with these publishers behavior. As corporations, publishers have every right to ban any publication they want for poor coverage. But that doesnt make it right. Gamers should feel disrespected as well.

Square Enix Wada Yoichis Interview with Nikkei

    Square Enix in 2008

    About Microsoft
    - If there is a merrit cooperating with Microsoft we will do this. We might give some projects to separate studios and make games for the X360.

    - The Main Platforms for Square Enix are the Nintendo Platforms and PS3. The Lionshare of the Developers and our infrastructure as well as our capital is for NDS, Wii and PS3 and this is not going to change.

    - We are astonished by Wiis success and the nintendo dominance. We thought that the PS3 and the Wii will coexist due to the difference between both strategies, but in the end the users will decide which platform we develop on. The SCE Platforms at this point are a bit of a challenge.

    - We think we can do much on the Wii. I talked to Iwata to exploit many possibilities and cheer on him

Bioshock team looking for PS3 developers

2K Boston, the team behind the wildly success Bioshock, is looking for a number of PS3 programmers. "PS3 and production experience using Python or Ruby will be highly regarded" for the Tools Programmer position. "Experience with PS3 development is highly desirable." for the Senior Console Programmer position. "PlayStation3 experience highly desirable" for the Programmer position.

Something has us thinking that the 2K Boston team is making a PS3 game. Just call it a hunch. Of course, this is in stark contrast to previous rumors that they were avoiding PS3 altogether. Could the sequel to Bioshock be coming to PS3? Considering 2K's acquisition of the team, we say it's very likely.

Ubisoft confirms new Prince of Persia in fiscal '08

What? A giant video game publisher is looking to continue developing their highly successful series at the same time a major Hollywood producer is working on a film based on the same property? It's almost too much to believe but buried amidst their latest financial release – which also bore news of a further Haze delay – Ubisoft made a small mention of a new Prince of Persia game being released in their 2008-2009 fiscal year, which begins in April.

Other releases mentioned in the same terse bulleted list include the aforementioned Haze, EndWar, a Shaun White snowboarding game, and the recently announced Tom Clancy's Air Combat game, as well as new releases from popular franchises like Splinter Cell (Conviction), Brothers in Arms (Earned in Blood and Hell's Highway), Far Cry (uh, 2), Anno, and Prince of Persia. No more info, like which studio is developing the game, which quarter they expect it to be released, or whether or not it's part of a rumored prequel trilogy, but we'll put a question into the good folks at Ubisoft.

'Iron Man,' 'Hulk,' 'Alien' games power Sega's reinvention

It's no mean feat powering up from being video game publisher No. 14 in 2004 to becoming the industry's sixth largest third-party publisher today. But Sega of America is tasting that success. Industry analysts credit its president and COO since 2005, Simon Jeffery, as the force behind the company's struggle to reinvent itself.

In fact, come May 2, when the Marvel Enterprises-produced "Iron Man" blasts into movie theaters, Sega is counting on the day-and-date release of its video game version to inject even more life into what was once a very anemic portfolio.

"Historically, Sega hasn't been part of the license business," explains Jeffery. "But we felt that in order to gain market momentum, we absolutely needed to have big game-appropriate movie licenses under our belt."

Which is why, in December, Sega came out with its action-adventure game "The Golden Compass" for all major consoles a few days prior to the film's opening. And Sega intends to offer both console and handheld versions of "The Incredible Hulk" come June around the time of the Universal Studio's June 13 movie release. At the end of the year, too, Sega will unveil "Aliens: Colonial Marines," a first-person shooter that is the first of several games based on the "Alien" film franchise, thanks to a deal with 20th Century Fox.

Despite the fact that the games industry has been roundly criticized for being "overlicensed," Jeffery believes it is an important component of his company's strategy.

"This is all new for Sega," says Jeffery, "but, in our transition years, one of the things we've done is take a step back and look at what has enabled our competitors -- Electronic Arts, Activision, THQ and Ubisoft -- to be successful. And movie licenses always seem to be a part of that."

Ironically, during his three-year tenure as president of LucasArts Entertainment -- from 2000-03 -- he decided that the company was relying too heavily on its "Star Wars" license, but he was unable to achieve his goal of creating successful original IP.

"Although Sega is now building licensed games," he explains, "we are being careful not to chase every movie license that comes along. Too often, publishers just slap the license onto the box and don't give the game enough attention to make certain the content of the movie translates over to the game. We are trying to be particularly choosey about which licenses we want and with which developers we partner."

Jeffery has also been able to convince Sega's management in Japan that games sold in the U.S. need to be built in the West while appealing to Western tastes.

"Much of the product that comes out of Japan isn't really suitable or appropriate culturally for the Western market," Jeffery notes, "and Sega has become the first of the Japanese gaming companies to recognize that the global market has various tastes and isn't necessarily just one great big Japanese market."

That's the sort of approach that impresses industry analyst Michael Pachter who says that, prior to Jeffery, Sega was "Nintendo-like in terms of its product slate, focusing heavily on kids games, like those featuring Sonic the Hedgehog. Beyond those -- and perhaps the Virtua fighting and tennis games -- they really didn't have much that was impressive. But now they've begun to layer in titles with broader appeal." Pachter is senior vp, research, at L.A.-based Wedbush Morgan Securities.

He is particularly enthusiastic about "Iron Man," the first of the films self-produced by comics publisher Marvel. "I'm the last guy in the world who you should ask about how well a movie is going to do, but it strikes me that it's getting the right kind of buzz among the right kind of audience," Pachter says. "And the fortunes of a licensed game rise and fall upon the underlying success of the property. I believe Sega this was a good opportunity for Sega, given the fact that 'Iron Man' is a product originally owned and then dropped by Activision. Three years ago Activision announced they were going to do the 'Iron Man' game with the movie, and then they just quietly bowed out. Sega did the right thing by picking it up, I believe."

But Jeffery doesn't feel that Sega's success lies entirely with movie licenses; he observes growth in the industry's casual game and mobile game sectors and he is anxious to be part of both.

"We, like the rest of the industry, are eager to take advantage of the wave of awareness of casual games," he says, "and, at the same time, we have a very active mobile games group. I suspect that we'll be expanding into both areas and will be able to benefit hugely from some of our popular original IP, like 'Sonic the Hedgehog.'"

At the same time, Jeffery says Sega is "extremely conscious of diluting our assets by applying ourselves to areas where we can't succeed. For instance, we got our fingers burned in the past when we tried to build sports games and, while we may secretly wish that we were an active part of that community, we know commercially that that's not an area for us. So we do want to pick our battles and really concentrate on just those areas where we feel we have a genuine market opportunity."

This year, Sega intends to release around 30 games compared to just four in 2004. Jeffery expects about a third will be licensed products, a third will be directed at hardcore gamers, and a third will be casual games focused on the mass market.

Sega's gameplan is ambitious, but could it be overly ambitious?

"Not at all," says Pachter. "I don't believe Jeffery's plan is to be No. 3 next year or to double revenues every year. He's layering in projects and he intends to grow at a rate that's just a bit higher than the industry growth rate. That's the right way to build a company.

"To be successful, there needs to be some sense of urgency," adds Pachter. "In comparison, look at Midway. They've been in turnaround mode since 2003. And every single year they do just enough to approach breakeven but never quite enough to make money. Yes, patience is a virtue, but there comes a point where patience really doesn't help you anymore."

Paul "The Game Master" Hyman is the former editor-in-chief of CMP Media's GamePower. He has covered the games industry for more than a dozen years. His columns for The Hollywood Reporter run exclusively on the Web site.

Sony picks Vivox for voice tech in online gaming

One of the attractions of online games and virtual worlds is the ability to create a character that looks nothing like the player sitting at the keyboard. But as voice communications becomes a greater part of such worlds, it poses a problem: Would anyone believe a 600-pound, computer-generated minotaur that sounds like a 14-year-old going through puberty?

Framingham voice application developer Vivox Inc. has built a solution, and last week landed its biggest customer yet in Sony Online Entertainment LLC, the California-based maker of EverQuest and other online games. The deal puts Vivox at the center of Sony Online's audio overhaul and has the company looking toward new industries, such as virtual worlds for enterprises.

"This is a very significant deal for us," said Monty Sharma, co-founder and vice president of product management for Vivox. "Right off the bat, they are going to include it in all of their games."

Default The Big Issue: First Take-Two, next EA's own console?

Imagine EA brought that virtual sports monopoly exclusively to its own console. That's FIFA, Madden, Tiger Woods, MLB, NHL and NBA, not to mention Cricket, Rugby, Nascar and God-knows what else, on EA's machine and NOT on the Xbox 360, PS3 or Nintendo Wii. That's a hell of a lot of exclusivity right there.
    :banghead:

That's not even including exclusivity on the inevitable GTA 5, BioShock 2, Mass Effect 2, the next Spore, the Sims franchise and the Burnout, Command & Conquer, Crysis, Medal of Honour, Battlefield and Need for Speed series.
    :banghead:

Having all those franchises exclusively on its own console would deal a severe blow to Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo, who currently rely on EA's games to shift millions of units.
