Nintendo may soon launch game demos and advertising efforts on smartphones and tablets.
That's according to the Japanese business paper Nikkei (via Dr. Serkan Toto), which reports this week that all the chatter about Nintendo branching out to mobile platforms is about to culminate in an announcement that will take place on Thursday.
Late in 2013 Nintendo executives revealed that the Mario maker was "experimenting" with smartphones and tablets, though it will likely never publish full Nintendo games on mobile platforms. But Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime said Nintendo was considering launching apps and smaller games that would aim to drive consumers to Nintendo's hardware.
It's no secret that Nintendo hasn't been doing so hot lately, and this currently hypothetical initiative seems like exactly the kind of thing it might try. I'll be keeping an eye out on Thursday for any announcements.
GameStop Germany has listed both Beyond Good & Evil 2 and a new Batman game for Xbox One and PlayStation 4.
A user on NeoGAF notes that this is the same retailer that outed Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition before it was formally announced.
Ubisoft's Michel Ancel has hinted in the past that a new Beyond Good & Evil was in the works for next-gen platforms, and Warner Bros. has made it clear gamers will see plenty more of the Caped Crusader in the future, so there's a good chance these listings are legit. That said, we'll have to treat this is mere rumor for the time being.

PlayStation Has News That “Gamers Will Be Excited About” At GDC 2014
GDC 2014 is fast approaching. From March 17-21st, the Moscone Center will play host to thousands of industry professionals, aspiring developers, and press alike. Its one of the largest gaming-related gatherings in the United States. I had a chance to ask PlayStation developer relations manager, Brian Silva what himself and Adam Boyes team had in store for the conference. Silva explained,
GDC is the busiest week of the year for our Developer Relations group. I cant say much, but weve all been hard at work with some great stuff that developers and gamers will be excited about.
That sounds like great news. As far as developers go, GDC might be just the venue to announce full Unitysupport for PS4 has gone live. For gamers, theres sure to be some exciting news as well, perhaps even new game announcements….
We already know that Mark Cerny will be translating the Shenmue post-mortem, so the phrasing “I cant say much” definitely alludes to something unannounced. Brian helps oversee developer relations on PS3, PS Vita and PS4, so it could be ultimately be big news for any PlayStation platform.
For a series that is famous for taking us back in time to some of the most interesting, historic time periods in history, Assassin's Creed has always seemed to have some sort of underlying expectation from fans that the series needed to eventually be set in the future.
That may be what some fans want, but Ubisoft does not want to go there as a main setting. Recently, veteranAssassin's Creed writer Darby McDevitt talked about how Ubisoft believes the present day setting is important, but it should not ever be the main focus of a game.
"The backbone of this series is visiting different time periods and bringing them to life. A lot of hardcore fans really like the present day stuff, and while thats the bookend and narrative wrapper of this series, thats not the point.
"With each game the selling point is the historical setting and characters. Youll notice weve never ever marketed the present day," McDevitt said.
He's 100 percent right about Ubisoft never marketing present day, and if the company were to ever set anAssassin's Creed in the present day, it would be a total betrayal of what the series stands for and has always done.
Taking the game into the future or present day would then make the game like others we've seen and wouldn't be Assassin's Creed. Fans should want the company to take the series to other time periods we've yet to play through, not drag us along a modern day story with a series that needs no part of that.
