NPD: PSP sales up 38% from last year
February's NPD figures were released last night, and it looks like Sony's handheld has done respectably well. PS sold through 243,115 PSP hardware units in February. Sony reminds us that this represents a "year-over-year increase of 38%."
Once again, it shows the lasting sales effects of the redesigned PSP. Since the introduction of the PSP-2000, Sony's handheld has been performing remarkably well. Add to that the launch of Patapon and Wipeout Pulse and it should be no surprise that PSP sales were strong in February.
As good as February's numbers were, we can't wait to see March's figures. With the release of both God of War: Chains of Olympus and Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII on the handheld, we're bound to see a significant bump in hardware sales.

Sony: PSP Getting 'A Lot of Very Strong Titles' in late 2008 ; PSP Turns 3
: http://www.gamepro.com/news.cfm?article_id=171408"A lot of very strong PSP titles are coming in late 2008," said John Koller, SCEA senior marketing manager, in an interview with GamePro.
Outside of Final Fantasy: Crisis Core, Secret Agent Clank, and a lineup of additional sports games, Koller said he didn't want to "scoop" anything, but that some "very unique" titles are coming later this year, with a focus on "franchise umbrellas."
In terms of downloadable games a la the PS3 and others, Koller said consumer education will be a hurdle in the coming months because the PSP store is still in its infancy. "The Store will be very, very important for Sony and for the PSP's future," he said, including both PS1 and PS2 re-releases.
Koller also mentioned that upcoming PSP peripherals will include a keyboard (for internet browsing), camera, and North American version of the GPS add-on planned for release this fall.
To date, Sony has sold more than 31 million PSP systems worldwide. By comparison, Nintendo has sold more than 65 million global DS units.

Sony: Devs now seeing key to PSP success
: http://www.gamesradar.com/psp/psp/ne...13155021903080he PSP has been out since 2005, but developers are only now beginning to realise what makes a good game for PSP, admits the PSP marketing boss.
Talking of the recent good fortunes for PSP, Sony's John Koller said: "developers and publishers are now just starting to see what the keys to success are on the PSP.
"It's not like the console world at all, and it's something we've been preaching for a while," he added, pointing to key franchises such as God of War and Daxter appearing on the handheld in unique, handheld-specific incarnations.
The key is "making a unique game under that umbrella and making it creative and have it be something that you can't play on console," explained Koller.
"One thing we've noticed is that about 1 in 2, about 50% of consumers, are using the PSP at home. And if they are then... they don't want to buy the same console game that they play on a handheld.
"So, to avoid that kind of competitive play, a lot of developers and publishers are starting to say, 'all right, maybe it's time we start making games that are unique to that system under a strong umbrella'."
Koller also teased about a number of "key" and "expansionary" PSP announcements to come soon. "We have a number of key announcements that'll be made in the next few months that'll be kind of expansionary in what the PSP can do."

PSP outsells every other console combined in Japan
Today, chart data from Famitsu based on software and console sales for last week (March 24-30th) shows what sort of impact Monster Hunter 2nd Portable G has had on console sales in Japan.
Last week PSP actually managed to sell more units than all of its competitor consoles put together. The handheld sold approximately 139,000 units, compared to (rounded up or down) 57,000 DSs, 49,000 Wiis, 13,000 PS3s and 2,800 Xbox 360s.

: PSP-3000, - RAM, , Analog stick
: http://www.psxextreme.com/psp-news/1205.htmlWe recently learned that the PSP would stick around for another seven years in a continued lifecycle, which means the snazzy handheld should go through several more incarnations before all is said and done. Hence, the PSP-3000 is on everyone's lips; the rumor is spreading like wildfire throughout the Internet.
We have no doubt another PSP is on the way, but there is no official information as of yet, so all of the following is nothing more than speculation. However, we're willing to bet that at least one - if not more - of the discussed features will be featured in the new PSP, and they're all intriguing. For example, the new handheld design could boast dual analog sticks, which is a very popular rumor and one that is connected to PS2 and PS1 software. If you see analog sticks, publishers may have a field day delivering those old games to the PSP, right? We've also heard plenty involving Bluetooth technology, touch screen, and integrated GPS. The touch screen idea actually isn't new; this rumor appeared towards the end of last year.
We may also see more RAM, rumble coming with the dual analog sticks, an HDMI port and our personal favorite, PS2 emulation. Can you imagine if that became a feature for the PSP? It seems a little illogical - and in some respects, almost impossible - but it's still fun to hope. We'll let you know whenever Sony issues anything official regarding a new PSP model, that's for sure.

PSP continues incredible Japanese sales momentum
Remember how PSP outsold every system combined last week in Japan? Well, it didn't managed to pull off that feat again, but PSP still had an incredible week in Japan. The numbers should more than do the talking:
* PSP - 113,000
* DS - 52,000
* Wii - 46,000
* PS3 - 11,000
* PS2 - 10,000
* 360 - 2,300
Seems like PSP is the new DS, no? At least in terms of Japanese hardware sales. Let's see if this post-Monster Hunter sales boom can continue.
