Final Fantasy XIII

FF XIII Story: The world of XIII will have the most technologically advanced culture ever seen in a Final Fantasy game. The people in it have lived alongside magic for so long that it has become irreversably integrated into both their technology and their everyday lives.
Final Fantasy XIII has been described by the developers as the 'light' to Final Fantasy Versus XIII's 'shadow', though it has been specifically stated that the two games do not take place in the same world or society, even though both stories share the same creation mythology based around the Crystals.

FFXIII not before April 2008

Square Enix boss Yoichi Wada has said that Final Fantasy XIII won't be released until at least April 2008.

He was talking at a money meeting discussing the company's earnings in fiscal 2006, which ended in March. But when quizzed about the financial year ahead and the arrival of FFXIII, he revealed it wouldn't be ready in that time frame.

"It will still take more time," said Wada, in an article translated by IGN. "At the very least, [a release] this fiscal year is definitely out of the question."

Square Enix America has avoided commenting on it so far, and we are waiting to hear back from the European representatives.

Square Enix has previously said it will have a demo of the game ready in time for this year's E3 conference, which runs from 11th to 13th July.

We recently flew out to the Square Enix Party in Japan and saw no evidence of it there, but we did manage to interview legendary designer Tetsuya Nomura.

According to Sony's press materials, the highly anticipated RPG sequel is now 13% complete. Yes, a low, unlucky completion percentage. But thankfully it's not as low as Final FantasyVersus XIII, which is listed as 1.3%.

FFXIII up and running and December EGM Preview

The November issue of Electronic Gaming Monthly (EGM) reports that although info on Final Fantasy XIII is tight and hard to squeeze out of Square Enix, one tidbit has popped out, Final Fantasy XIII is up and running on Playstation 3 hardware as of now (see scan 1). Whether FFXIII has just gotten up and running on PS3 hardware recently or if it's been up and running and this info has only just made it to EGM is unclear. If it's the case that FFXIII has just gotten on PS3 hardware recently, the prospect of seeing it inside 2008 seem slimmer than ever, especially in english.

Nomura: Using the PlayStation 3 hardware all visions can come true

We all know the fact that Famitsu likes to interview Nomura, and this week is no different: The magazine has conducted an interview with him, but unfortunately we did not get any new details. I translated the article and wrote a short sum-up:

Â· Nomura was never involved in the creation of any Final Fantasy title as deeply he is right now, and he likes the fact he can take Final Fantasy Versus XIII where he wants it to be.

Â· Nomura says the PlayStation 3 hardware plays a huge part in the development of both projects, and by using it "all visions can come true". He says that visual-wise both Final Fantasy XIII and Versus XIII are superior from any former title in the franchise, and they are "close to perfection".

Â· As in any interview, Nomura was asked about the game's exclusivity. This time he mentioned that the TGS 2007 trailers had the writing "for PlayStation 3 ONLY". He says it's an advantage for one team to concentrate on one console, even if some fans are disappointed.

A few new bits about Final Fantasy XIII & Final Fantasy Versus XIII have been revealed, thanks to Maiki's blog. She scanned an article from this week's Famitsu issue and translated it:

- The city inside of Cocoon was shown in the new trailer.
- The new FF13 girl is quite different than other girls in the series so it's hard to get her into balance.
- Nomura said the latest Versus 13 trailer finally caught up to the original image he had always wanted to go with. Two new characters even showed up but everything might be reset by the end of the year.* The main character's design has always been a temporary design anyway so his real self will be revealed sometime next year. (MAJISSUKA)
- The plains and towns are following the image of Italy. The text that showed up in the trailer was also Italian.
- For now Agito 13 looks pretty tame compared to the main 13 and Versus 13 but a bigger revelation will be done next year.
