When it released in Japan, Demon's Souls was met with mediocre reviews and rather awful sales, but its legs managed to hold up and it hit 200k copies sold, to the surprise of many. Even more surprising was how much the game caught on in North America- to date, it has sold 540k copies in the region. The game also received excellent review scores:
an 8.7 from VGChartz, with a Critic Score of 9.0.
Sony only published the game in Japan, while Atlus handled the publishing in North America. Sony later admitted that it was a mistake to not bring the game to the West itself.
According to the Unterhaltungssoftware Selbstkontrolle (USK), Germany's software rating organisation (similar to the ESRB in the USA and BBFC in the UK), the game is finally getting a release in Europe, over a year after its original Japanese release. However, it is not being published by Sony, but by Namco Bandai, the Japanese publisher best known for the
Tales of and
Tekken franchises.
The game is rated 16 by the USK, which is similar to the ratings from CERO in Japan and ESRB in the USA.
The rating mentions "Namco Bandai Deutschland (Germany)", but it would be reasonable to assume that if the game is releasing in Germany, it will release in the rest of Europe. The game was tested on 14th April 2010, so the release could be as little as a month away.
