Jack Black is back as Po, the Panda "Dragon Warrior," in this high-adrenaline sequel to 2008's surprisingly excellent Kung Fu Panda. Kung Fu Panda 2 isn't as gawkily great as the first film, but it still hits all the right emotional notes and will provide you with a beautiful palate of truly kickass action sequences. Seriously though, the set-pieces in this movie are more exciting than most action movies. True, animation gives you a lot more breathing room when it comes to imaginary battles, but there were fights and clashes in this movie that were just stunning.
The best story in the Kung Fu Panda world has already been told; that of Po actually rising up to become a prophesied warrior of legend. What comes next is, well, decent. Most of KFP2 involves Po remembering and reliving past trauma thanks to a bitter and ruthless peacock, Lord Shen (pitch-perfect Gary Oldman), bent on conquering all of China.
It works mostly because of the scenes between Jack Black and the underrated James Hong, as Po's duck "father," Mr. Ping. Hong doesn't get enough credit in the Kung Fu Panda series even though he provides excellent voice work while stars such as Seth Rogen, Lucy Liu, David Cross and Jackie Chan are inexplicably there to contribute a couple lines of dialogue and some grunting noises for fights.
As Po's confrontation with Shen forces him to freeze up, he must then decide on what to do with his new, horrific memories. It's not the greatest of stories since the fear itself is so newfound. It's such a sudden revelation. And Po finds himself unknowingly on a quest for vengeance. What works better is Shen's obsession with ancient tech and the development of a devastating weapon that Kung Fu masters have no defense against. Down underground, in his molten metal factory run by an army of wolves, I was reminded of Saruman in Lord of the Rings and his orcs ripping out the tress, defiling the land and readying themselves to do battle with the natural, mystical forces of the land.- Dreamworks.
We're given the "secret ingredient" to the inevitable happy ending of the film early on when Po sees Master Shifu (Dustin Hoffman) working hard to master inner peace. But even though we know what's coming a few miles ahead, it doesn't actually stop our jaws from dropping at the sheer grandeur of the third act. And it all comes together nicely in a tofu dumpling full of eye-popping action, heart and humor.
Black is still great as Po, being one of the only two roles that I feel actually uses his charm and humor correctly (the other being School of Rock). A voice part like this shows you just how likable Black can be when he doesn't bombard you with Black-isms. There's no singing or twitching. No pandering. Just good, solid deliveries. Angelina Jolie, whose star seemed a bit bright to be playing the terse Tigress back in part one, gets a bit of a character boost in this one, acting more like a true partner to Po. Not a love interest though, thankfully. As far as we can tell, there is no inter-species breeding in the KFP-verse.
Everyone else is fine, but they can't even begin to outshine the gorgeous chaos of warring and fighting that happens in this film. Kung Fu Panda 2 is a bit darker than the first – as most sequels are – but there's nothing here that will damage your kids. The 3D isn't necessary to the experience at all. Spare yourselves the glasses and watch this one in its full sheen.
