SOCOM Confrontation to include Bluetooth headset

A few months ago, we reported that SOCOM Confrontation will release in retail stores with a brand new Bluetooth headset for $60 -- it's a similar package to the one crafted for Warhawk, but this new headset will be officially PlayStation-branded. An e-mail about an upcoming SOCOM media event made quick mention of the device, confirming its existence, but offered no new details. We hope to get some pictures and some ears-on time with the new headset later this month.

SOCOM headset officially revealed

The retail version of SOCOM Confrontation will include a Blu-ray headset. However, expect something much classier than the one included in the Warhawk bundle so long ago. This one is made specifically with gaming in mind -- and as such, earns the official PlayStation branding. The headset, which will also be available seperately from the game, is designed for long use and even includes a much-needed Mute button, a feature uncommon to most Bluetooth headsets. The device will also include a USB cradle, so that it can be charged via the PS3.

While neither the design and price have been completely finalized, Sony plans on pricing this quite competitively. From the looks of its quality, we believe Sony will charge more than what they did for Warhawk.

SOCOM: U.S. Navy SEALs Confrontation is going to have a newer, better headset that'll come both packaged with the game and separately. Why separately? Well, they did such a good job on it that it's going to be the official Bluetooth® Headset for PLAYSTATION®3.

We've got some shots of the headset from different angles here.

It has a few neat features that aren't on a lot of Bluetooth headsets. First among them is the mute button. Most headsets, since they're normally built for phones, don't come with mute. There's a good reason behind it-- why would you want to mute yourself when you're speaking to someone?

In video games, it's a bit different. Sometimes you have to mute. Let's say if you're knee deep in a clan match, forty-five seconds to go, and it's coming down to the wire. Suddenly, your dog sees a cat and goes off. Your wife wants to know why you're sitting in your chair in your pajamas when the movie you promised to take her to starts in ten minutes. Your kids fell, bumped their head, and managed to break every single piece of tableware in your house. Also, your fire alarm is going off for no reason in particular.

And then your teammates lose the game, because the cacophony overloaded their headsets with a bunch of noise, killing any planning or strategizing that was going on.

So, yeah, mute button? Great idea. Here's hoping people use it!

One problem that's easy to run into with Bluetooth headsets is the fact that you tend to drain the battery without realizing it. This headset comes with a charging cradle, which can be plugged into any USB port, so that you a) can charge it easily and b) don't lose it.

It isn't 100% complete yet, as it's in the prototype phase for now. There are a few more PlayStation-exclusive features that they're working into the mix, plus some refinement on the ergonomics and plastics that are being used in the design. Even then, it's remarkably complete. It's designed to fit into either ear and was designed and optimized specifically for gaming. Look for more info on it in the months coming up while they hammer out the specs. There are a few more features in the works that sound pretty cool.
