Ôoshiba To Announce Plan To Exit HD DVD Business

TOKYO (Nikkei)--Toshiba Corp. (6502) has decided to stop developing and manufacturing HD DVD players and recorders immediately and to halt sales of HD DVD products by the end of March, The Nikkei learned Monday.

This decision is expected to be announced Tuesday afternoon by President Atsutoshi Nishida, along with plans to build new semiconductor plants.

The company has yet to discuss the future of HD DVD drives, which it has been supplying to Hewlett-Packard Co. and others, but intends to stop manufacturing them as well.

Toshiba has sold a total of roughly 1 million HD DVD recorders, players and personal computer drives around the world. Of these, 600,000 to 700,000 players have been sold, mainly in North America and Europe. The Japanese sales of around 10,000 to 20,000 units consist largely of recorders. Players sell for about 200 dollars in the U.S., while recorders go for around 100,000 yen in Japan.

Toshiba intends to take back the roughly 100,000 HD DVD units in retailers' hands, but not to accept returns from consumers.

Production lines for HD DVD devices can be used to make devices for conventional DVDs, so the withdrawal from the HD DVD business is unlikely to have a major impact on jobs. But Toshiba's losses from the retreat are estimated to reach into the tens of billions of yen.

Since launching an HD DVD-compatible device in Japan back in 2006, Toshiba had spearheaded the fight against the rival Blu-ray Disc next-generation DVD format, which has been supported by Sony Corp. (6758), Matsushita Electric Industrial Co. (6752) and others.

HD DVD quickly lost traction after Warner Bros. Inc. announced in January its decision to stop releasing HD DVD titles. Support for Blu-ray by Wal-Mart Stores Inc. and other major U.S. retailers drove the final nail into HD DVD's coffin.

Toshiba Announces Discontinuation of HD DVD Businesses

Company Remains Focused on Championing Consumer Access to High Definition Content

TOKYO--Toshiba Corporation today announced that it has undertaken a thorough review of its overall strategy for HD DVD and has decided it will no longer develop, manufacture and market HD DVD players and recorders. This decision has been made following recent major changes in the market. Toshiba will continue, however, to provide full product support and after-sales service for all owners of Toshiba HD DVD products.
HD DVD was developed to offer consumers access at an affordable price to high-quality, high definition content and prepare them for the digital convergence of tomorrow where the fusion of consumer electronics and IT will continue to progress.

"We carefully assessed the long-term impact of continuing the so-called 'next-generation format war' and concluded that a swift decision will best help the market develop," said Atsutoshi Nishida, President and CEO of Toshiba Corporation. "While we are disappointed for the company and more importantly, for the consumer, the real mass market opportunity for high definition content remains untapped and Toshiba is both able and determined to use our talent, technology and intellectual property to make digital convergence a reality."

Toshiba will continue to lead innovation, in a wide range of technologies that will drive mass market access to high definition content. These include high capacity NAND flash memory, small form factor hard disk drives, next generation CPUs, visual processing, and wireless and encryption technologies. The company expects to make forthcoming announcements around strategic progress in these convergence technologies.

Toshiba will begin to reduce shipments of HD DVD players and recorders to retail channels, aiming for cessation of these businesses by the end of March 2008. Toshiba also plans to end volume production of HD DVD disk drives for such applications as PCs and games in the same timeframe, yet will continue to make efforts to meet customer requirements. The company will continue to assess the position of notebook PCs with integrated HD DVD drives within the overall PC business relative to future market demand.

This decision will not impact on Toshiba's commitment to standard DVD, and the company will continue to market conventional DVD players and recorders. Toshiba intends to continue to contribute to the development of the DVD industry, as a member of the DVD Forum, an international organization with some 200 member companies, committed to the discussion and defining of optimum optical disc formats for the consumer and the related industries.

Toshiba also intends to maintain collaborative relations with the companies who joined with Toshiba in working to build up the HD DVD market, including Universal Studios, Paramount Pictures, and DreamWorks Animation and major Japanese and European content providers on the entertainment side, as well as leaders in the IT industry, including Microsoft, Intel, and HP. Toshiba will study possible collaboration with these companies for future business opportunities, utilizing the many assets generated through the development of HD DVD.

    Is Blu-ray a Microsoft victory?

So Sony have won the format war for HD TV content distribution. The Blu-ray disk has beaten HD DVD to become the new standard. The first Sony media victory since the Microfloppy of 1982.
But it has cost Sony dear. Difficulties mass producing Blu-ray drives in 2005/6 delayed the PS3 getting to market. And when it did the high cost of the drives compared with DVDs contributed to Sony having to charge a premium price for the console, which stunted sales. These factors may possibly result in Sony coming third in this generation of the console wars. For certain they haven’t dominated like they did in the last generation with PS2. A very high cost to pay.
Meanwhile Microsoft did not build an HD drive into the Xbox 360. This enabled them to get their console to market more quickly and for a lower price. So they have maintained a significant lead over Sony in this generation of console. By having the HD drive as an external add on Microsoft hedged it’s bets. It didn’t bother them or effect them commercially whichever format won. They would just make external drives using whichever format won. And so they will.
Of course none of this has any impact on Nintendo. They, quite literally, are playing a different game.

    Toshiba officially scraps HD-DVD

Toshiba has finally announced the discontinuation of its HD-DVD format today after several days of intense speculation.

The decision was made in a board meeting in Japan earlier today, with "major changes in the market" - referring to the Hollywood studios and retailers siding with Blu-ray - the reason for its change of heart.

"We carefully assessed the long-term impact of continuing the so-called 'next-generation format war' and concluded that a swift decision will best help the market develop," said Atsutoshi Nishida, big boss at Toshiba.

"While we are disappointed for the company and more importantly, for the consumer, the real mass market opportunity for high definition content remains untapped and Toshiba is both able and determined to use our talent, technology and intellectual property to make digital convergence a reality."

Its efforts will now be focused on improving things like flash memory, hard disks, CPUs, visual processing and encryption technology.

Shipments of HD-DVD players and recorders will slow to a trickle and stop altogether by the end of March, although Toshiba will continue to offer support and after-sales service for products already sold.

It will also continue relationships with previous partners like Microsoft, and look for new ways to work with them in the future.

So far it's unclear what impact the discontinuation of the format will have on the Xbox 360 HD-DVD add-on. Microsoft has previously said it would announce its plans after Toshiba made its mind up.

The move clears the way for Sony and its Blu-ray technology, and is likely to produce strong knock-on effects for PlayStation 3 console sales.

Analysts have suggested the PS3 will nearly double its installed base by the end of the year.

Êáé éäïõ : ç SONY + Toshiba óå óõíåñãáóéá!

The GDC news keeps coming in from all sides of the world. The latest news comes for Toshiba and Sony which apparently has made up for that who "Format War" thing and will be building a brand new production factory. The factory will open on April 1st.
The factory will be jointly owned by Toshiba and Sony splitting ownership with Toshiba having the larger slice of the pie holding 60% market share. The president of the new factory is expected to be from Sony and the chairman will be from Toshiba.
Production at the factory will starter with the CELL Processor (65nm dye-size) and the Reality Synthesizer. A few months after the factory's opening, the CELL Processor's production will be shrunk to 45nm and Toshiba will start manufacturing components for their products.

    Paramount seals Blu-ray sweep

Winner of next-gen format war now has all 6 majors

All six major Hollywood studios are now in the Blu-ray Disc camp, a day after Toshiba has pulled the plug on HD DVD and Blu-ray became effectively the only next-gen game in town.

Paramount Home Entertainment quietly came onboard via a statement sent exclusively to The Hollywood Reporter on Wednesday: "We are pleased that the industry is moving to a single high-definition format, as we believe it is in the best interest of the consumer," the statement reads. "As we look to (begin) releasing our titles on Blu-ray, we will monitor consumer adoption and determine our release plans accordingly."

    No further details were given.

Universal Studios Home Entertainment, in contrast, cast its lot with Blu-ray within hours of Toshiba's announcement Tuesday morning that it was ending the format war by ceasing the development, manufacture and marketing of HD DVD players by the end of March. Universal made a big splash with its announcement, sending media outlets a statement from division president Craig Kornblau in which he said, "While Universal values the close partnership we have shared with Toshiba, it is time to turn our focus to releasing new and catalog titles on Blu-ray."

Janet Murray, director of Georgia Tech's masters and Ph.D. program in digital media, said a single format supported by all six major studios has a much better chance of success than two rival ones that each take only a chunk of Hollywood.

"It's a big victory for the consumer," she said.

Now that the studios are no longer battling each other over which format is best, Murray said, they can focus on generating awareness among consumers of the many benefits of high-definition media. Murray predicts "a standardization of extras" now that everyone's releasing films on a single format rather than two, each with its own set of capabilities. "This will lead to a much richer experience for viewers," she added.

Murray also foresees "much more content and much more breadth of content" now that Blu-ray is the only way to go. "When people have these higher-end screens at home, they take great pleasure in them, and this will push ahead the delivery (of movies) in high-definition," she said.

Ironically, Universal had been exclusive with HD DVD since the format's launch in April 2006, while Paramount had initially supported both HD DVD and Blu-ray. Paramount and DreamWorks switched to HD DVD-only in August, reportedly after receiving a $150 million payment from the format's supporters for "promotional consideration."

Neither studio has announced specific titles earmarked for early Blu-ray release, though both are expected to start with new theatricals coming the same day as the standard DVD, beginning in late spring or early summer.

The four other majors committed to Blu-ray are Sony Pictures Home Entertainment, 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment (along with its distributed MGM Home Entertainment label), Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment and Warner Home Video (including distributed labels New Line Home Entertainment, BBC Video and HBO Video). Mini-major Lionsgate also has been an exclusive Blu-ray backer since the start.
