    Default Mass Effect: Legendary Edition

    Happy N7 Day!

Its tough keeping a big secret (and we really struggled to keep this one a surprise) but now its official: today we announced the Mass Effect Legendary Edition! Weve heard (for years!) your requests for a Mass Effect remaster, so were super happy to finally reveal that weve been working on a remastered edition of the Mass Effect trilogy.

For many months now, our team at BioWare has been hard at work updating the textures, shaders, models, effects, and technical features of three enormous games. Our goal was not to remake or reimagine the original games, but to modernize the experience so that fans and new players can experience the original work in its best possible form. Its been amazing to see the adventures of Commander Shepard take on new life in super-sharp resolution, faster framerates, and beautiful visual enhancements. As game developers, we always hope that our games will transcend their original platforms. Having the opportunity to remaster the trilogy means that the fruits of a decade of our work will live on, and will be experienced better and clearer than ever before.

Mass Effect Legendary Edition will include single-player base content and DLC from Mass Effect, Mass Effect 2, and Mass Effect 3, plus promo weapons, armors, and packs – all remastered and optimized for 4k Ultra HD. It will be available in Spring 2021 for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC, with forward compatibility and targeted enhancements on Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5. More information to come in the new year!

Looks like Mass Effect: Legendary Edition launches in March

A couple of online retailers have now listed the upcoming Mass Effect: Legendary Edition for release on 12th March 2021.
EA is yet to officially announce a date for its remastered Mass Effect trilogy pack beyond a vague spring window but, barring any further delays, Eurogamer understands the above date to currently be accurate.

Singapore retailer Shopitree and Indonesian outlet GSShop both have Mass Effect: Legendary Edition down for 12th March, as spotted by Twitter user Idle Sloth.

Mass Effect Legendary Edition: whats changed in Mass Effect 1

Our Top 5 Changes in Mass Effect 1s Legendary Edition Remaster:

    • Fast Elevators, at last: in a demo of the PC version of Legendary Edition versus the original game, BioWare showed that a 52-second elevator ride from the Citadel Wards to the Presidium now only takes 14 seconds in the remaster. In addition, if dialogue is playing out during an elevator ride, an optional skip prompt will appear once the area loading the elevator ride hides is complete.
    • New Game+ No Longer Required for Level 60: for the Legendary Edition, BioWare has rebalanced the XP required to hit Level 60, the Level Cap. This is important because in the original game, New Game+ was required to hiti level cap, and hitting level cap unlocked significant bonuses in Mass Effect 2. In the Legendary Edition, youll be able to hit 60 and max out your bonuses even on the first play-through.
    • No more Class-Based Weapon Restrictions: in the original ME1, not all classes can use all weapons. This has been rebalanced for the Trilogy Remaster, with restrictions removed. This means that, for instance, that the Biotic-focused Sentinel class can use weapons other than pistols - but they wont be able to train and put skill points into those weapon classes, limiting their abilities. In addition, penalties to aim based on your class have been eliminated.
    • Aiming & Weapon Changes & Improvements: traditional RPG fans who struggle with the shooter elements will be pleased to know that ME1 now has a proper aim assist, including a snap to enemy function, just like the latter two games. In addition, every weapon has been rebalanced and tweaked to try to give every weapon and every manufacturer “a unique feel”.
    • The Mako gets an upgrade: ME1s infamous ground vehicle featured controls and physics that often defied logic to often hilarious impact, but these things have been tweaked for the Legendary Edition. Theres new physics, an alternative control scheme, an overall speed boost, and camera shake to make it feel more dynamic.

In addition, heres some other changes you can expect to see and experience in the Mass Effect Legendary Edition version of Mass Effect 1, which is functionally the 4K Remaster of the game.

    • Modernized HUD, more in line with ME2 & 3
    • Improved AI for both enemies and squad member allies
    • Boss Encounter improvements & rebalancing
    • Mini game changes - mini-games are now the same across all platforms, and have reduced difficulty & frequency
    • Control Scheme adjusted to be closer to ME2 & 3, including a dedicated melee button
    • Smoother Camera Control, including when aiming down a scope
    • Improved First Aid cooldown - presumably to make it quicker
    • More Customization options - as well as there being one unified Shepard character model throughout the series, be that default or custom, all customization options are now uniform across all three games. If an option was available in ME3, it now exists in ME1.
    • PC version upgrades including proper native controller support, better keybinding options and 21:9 ultrawide support

BioWare used AI upscaling to remaster Mass Effects original textures

“We knew we wanted to increase the resolution on all the textures across the trilogy,” environment and character director Kevin Meek said during a roundtable with press. “So that means all of the visual effects, the user interface, the environment art, the character art — every single texture we hit right away with two main changes. First, we increased cap that the engine places on the texture sizes. And secondly, we ran all the original, uncompressed source art through an AI up-res program along with some other custom batch tools.”
BioWare did this to every single texture in all three games. This was a massive undertaking — although it was more automated than some of the later touch-up stages.

“So across the entire trilogy, were talking tens of thousands of textures with a resolution increased at least four-times — if not 16-times,” said Meek.

    ( PS1 Final Fantasy ) re-releases AI upscaling textures. . !!
