    Arcade-Inspired Driving Action Game RUNNER Announced for PSVR 2



    Features include:

    Jim Ryan: Next-Gen VR Is A Strategic Opportunity For PlayStation


    Ryan said as such to Japanese publication, Nikkei, in a recent interview, adding that the potential market for VR is huge.

    The next generation VR system is a very strategic opportunity for PS, he said (as translated on Systran). We launched PSVR in 2016 and have had time to understand the VR experience for years. What I learned from VR is that the potential market is huge. I want to continue to provide a high gaming experience to keep the community entertained.

    Sony reportedly plans PSVR successor for next holiday season

    Its expected to use OLED panels from Samsung
    Sonys next-gen PlayStation VR headset is likely to come out in late 2022, according to a new report. Bloombergs sources say Sony is “aiming to release the successor in the holiday period next year,” and that the headset will use OLED panels from Samsung Display.

    A release in that timeframe wouldnt be too surprising, since Sony has already started talking up the PS5 headsets potential. Its existence was first confirmed in February along with some initial details, and Sony followed up by showing off the new controllers in March.



    The headset itself hasnt yet been revealed. But according to an UploadVR report from last month, itll have a total resolution of 4000 x 2040 and make use of eye tracking to enable foveated rendering, which should ease the processing load by using lower resolution imagery in your peripheral vision. The next-gen PSVR is also said to use inside-out tracking and include haptic feedback in the headset as well as the controllers.

    Bloombergs report is more broadly focused on Japan Display Inc, an LCD specialist that has seen smartphone display sales slump as the market moved to OLED but now considers VR headsets “big business.” While OLED was initially the standard for VR, more recently manufacturers like Facebook and HTC have been moving to LCD panels because theyre more practical at higher resolutions, despite having lower contrast. Sony, however, appears to be sticking with OLED for the next PSVR.

    • Sony is referring to the new headset as "NGVR" (next-gen VR) for now.
    • FRESNEL lenses and OLED screen.
    • 4000x2040 resolution image (split in two meaning 2000x2040 per eye).
    • 110 degree screen.
    • HDR!
    • FSR: Flexibile scaling resolution (which is separate from foveated).
    • Foveated rendering capabilities confirmed due to eye-tracking capabilities.
    • Haptics in headset (using older-fashion rotary-motor... not sure if assumption from video-host).
    • Controllers are always bundled with headset.
    • Controller has analog-capacitive-sensors (not just on/off but degrees) for thumb, index and middle fingers.
    • Focus on AAA VR (want to move away from "VR experiences").
    • Also hybrid games with VR image + flat-screen image (other participants)
    • Download only games
    • Remastered PSVR1 games
    • Launch details to come early 2022.

    • "We have multiple sources confirming these details to us independently. These are not 'rumors'."
    • "Some people are reporting the fresnel lenses can increase brightness by 3x." (Maybe for HDR purposes?)
    • "PSVR2 has 59-75mm pupillary distance adjustment capability. It wasn't specified if this was done by eye-tracking or some other mechanism/setting."
    • Refresh Rate is native 90HZ and 120HZ
    • Headset's haptics won't be 1:1 with the controller, in the sense of most of the surface of the controller(in this case the headset) could vibrate(like the raindrops in Astro's Playroom), it will be simpler somehow, it likely will be mostly to ease motion sickness.
    • "The System UI will be super-imposed over the games." (game will still show in background when interacting with main PS5 menu)
    • No battery for the headset mentioned in the spec sheet(they were talking about the possibility of the headset also being wireless)
    • Flexible Scaling Resolution(FSR) uses AI to upscale the resolution thus using less processing power for the same image quality, which is combined with Foveated Rendering.
    • ''Early prototype headsets are going out next month", "There are two developer programs coming soon:", "'Getting started' series for developers this autumn to get up-to-speed with PSVR2 development", ''Deeper look' series in Q1 next year."
    • In their personal opinion, the best news from the show was Sony detailing their strategy about heavily pushing for hybrid AAA games (with both flat-screen & VR modes both) going forward. Apparently Sony want the VR mode (in hybrid games) to be more immersive than what people usually associate with flat-screen ports to VR, they should be using the Orb VR controller properly etc.
