    Results for the fiscal year ended March 31, 2020

    Sales decreased 333.3 billion yen (14%) year-on-year to 1 trillion 977.6 billion yen (a 12% decrease on a constant currency basis). This significant decrease was primarily due to a decrease in PlayStation4 (“PS4”) hardware sales and game software sales, as well as the impact of foreign exchange rates, partially offset by an increase in sales for PlayStationPlus (“PS Plus”).

    Operating income decreased 72.7 billion yen year-on-year to 238.4 billion yen. This significant decrease was primarily due to the impact of the above-mentioned decrease in game software sales and the negative impact of foreign exchange rates, partially offset by the above-mentioned increase in sales for PS Plus and cost reductions. During the current fiscal year, there was a 12.2 billion yen negative impact from foreign exchange rate fluctuations.

    Current View Regarding the Impact on the Business from the Spread of COVID-19
    Although there has been a slight impact on production of PS4 hardware due to issues in the component supply chain, demand in the short-term is being addressed with current inventory and sales are trending well. Sales of game software that is downloaded from the network, as well as PS Plus and PlayStation Now (PS Now) subscriber numbers have significantly increased. Regarding the launch of PlayStation5, although factors such as employees working from home and restrictions on international travel have presented some challenges in regards to part of the testing process and the qualification of production lines, development is progressing with the launch of the console scheduled for the 2020 holiday season. At this point in time major problems have not arisen in the game software development pipeline for Sonyʼs own first-party studios or its partnersʼ studios.

    Epic CEO Tim Sweeney says the PS5 is so impressive its going to help drive future PCs


    Epic CEO Tim Sweeney says next-generation gaming consoles, in particular Sonys PlayStation 5, will bring about changes in game development that go far beyond a jump in graphics quality. During a press briefing for the companys newly announced Unreal Engine 5, which is optimized to work with next-gen consoles, Sweeney says the PS5 is a remarkably balanced device.

    It has an immense amount of GPU power, but also multi-order bandwidth increase in storage management. Thats going to be absolutely critical, he says. Its one thing to render everything that can fit in memory, he adds, but a much more impressive feat to render a world that might be tens of gigabytes in size almost instantaneously, as Sonys new console and its M.2 solid-state drive are promising.

    The new drive, which Sony claims is faster than any on-market device available right now, wont just make load times almost nonexistent, but will also enable developers to access the data their games are composed of with unprecedented speed. The result is larger game worlds loading much faster than ever before, which could result in drastic changes to how developers approach everything from balancing visual quality and performance to level design.

    Sweeney isnt saying that you cant get a comparable M.2 drive for your PC, even now if you want to shell out for it. Rather, hes saying the custom drive Sony created and the way it interacts with the overall PS5 data management system makes it faster and more impressive from a development standpoint that anything a consumer could readily buy today, especially considering PC developers arent yet building games that take advantage of such speeds. That may change in the future when both new consoles arrive and, as Sweeney predicts, inspire significant upgrades to PC component design and PC-specific game development.

    SSD streaming absolutely critical for the performance of this demo.

    Tim Sweeney: "Sony's storage is system is absolute world class. Best on any platform. Better than any high-end PC."

    We actually do not know what the what the deciding factor in performance in this demo is regarding how it stresses RAM or streaming into RAM. They did not clarify what the memory budget was for anything. We just know that Nanite and Lumen are heavy on the GPU for generating frames at medium resolutions - hence it running at 1440p 30.
