The reason why we havent gave a go for VII remake is that its extremely hard to remake FFVII with the current technology, and to be honest, we hesitated. Remaking FFVII in HD without losing the originals “density” requires more than one part.
    Nomura-san
If we were to put it in one part, then we have to cut many parts and deliver it as a digest. Nobody wants that kind of game. Plus, users can explore many places in Midgar where they couldnt in the original game. Once we decided to remake VII, we will develop those details and more. Of course we have to cut some parts from the original, but users can expect the VII world that only VII Remake can deliver. We estimate that, with the quality of those details, the volume of the game will be larger than the original after all. You may worry about the schedule, and we want to provide the game as soon as possible. Making it multiple parts is the line we drew to deliver the game.

FINAL FANTASY VII Remake | PSX 2015 | Message from Yoshinori Kitase

For many years, people around the world have asked me “Will you ever remake FINAL FANTASY VII?” For many years I gave the same answers and on a personal level, having made the original FINAL FANTASY VII, did I really want to spend so many years making the same game again?
With FINAL FANTASY VII REMAKE, we have the opportunity to go beyond the story, world and experience of FINAL FANTASY VII in ways weve always dreamed of - from the depths of Midgar to the skies above the Planet. The multi-part format enables us to expand the original story and turn it into an epic experience for fans and new gamers alike.

This past weekend at PlayStation Experience we were thrilled to present more of FINAL FANTASY VII REMAKE. It was great to see so much excitement when we surprised everyone with the first gameplay footage and it was a treat for us to show that development is going well, and further along than perhaps many had realised. Just like when we revealed the announcement trailer at E3 earlier this year, we like surprising you.

One thing that we wanted to be clear about during this weekend to accompany the new trailer was the scale of this project. We wanted to tell you this now and not in the future so that youd share our vision for what we want to deliver.

The biggest reason why we havent done a remake until now is because its a massive undertaking to reconstruct FINAL FANTASY VII from the ground up with the current technology. Producing a proper HD remake of FINAL FANTASY VII that maintains the same feeling of density of the original would result in a volume of content that couldnt possibly fit into one instalment.

Weve seen everyones comments and reactions to the news that FINAL FANTASY VII REMAKE will be a multi-part series and many have speculated correctly as to the reason why we have made this decision. If we were to try to fit everything from the original into one remake instalment, we would have to cut various parts and create a condensed version of FINAL FANTASY VII. We knew none of you would have wanted that.

I hope that by explaining a little more about our design decisions that you can appreciate the size of this project and what we have planned for this remake. Going beyond the scale and depth of the world, narrative and gameplay from the original to deliver something that feels familiar yet new. As I said before, we like delivering surprises.

See you all soon and Happy Holidays!
    Yoshinori Kitase

Nomura noted that his calendar is currently booked with projects up to 2019 – something the designer seems very pleased about.

The scenario of the first part to the Final Fantasy VII Remake is already complete, the latest issue of Weekly Famitsu reveals.

As previously announced, Final Fantasy VII Remake is being broken up into parts as the density of the original game would not allow a remake to fit into a single release, according to Square Enix.

Final Fantasy VII Remake is in development for PlayStation 4.

    Thanks, Famitsu.

Summary of information from the latest Kitase & Nomura interview from Famitsu (12/31 weekly edition):
    - Nomura says he didn't know when he'd appear on the PSX stage until the day of the event, after he'd entered Moscone (name of the center in San Francisco where PSX was held).
    - Right about when the 7R project was gearing up, it was Hashimoto who said that he wanted the remake to have AC-level visuals. Since Nomura is AC's director, the decision to have him direct 7R was a natural one.
    - Nomura knows that we (the fans) are worried about the remake project's schedule, and he says that they (Square Enix) also want to play it ASAP. This is one of the contributing factors to their decision to split the game into several parts.
    - Some parts in the Compilation that have been difficult to understand will be connected better in the Remake.
    - Nojima was impressed by voiced Biggs, Jessica, and Wedge, and he sent a message to Nomura saying, "I want them to talk more!"
    - Part of the escape after the Bombing Mission will serve as a tutorial for the game.
    - Nomura says that he and Kitase are not able to discuss online components of the VII Remake at this time. They have to focus on the game first.
    - Nojima has finished the main scenario of the first part of the remake. All the team have left to do is add side stuff and flesh out side characters such as Jessica, Wedge, and Biggs.
    - Kitase: "I hope to resume voice recording in January. Is that all right with you?" Nomura: "Are we even allowed to say that here? (laugh)"
    - Real ≠ Photoreal "Real" is an important keyword for 7R, but Nomura says this does not mean photorealism. The "real" comes from maintaining integrity and unity of the world.
    - CC2 may have put together the latest PV. Nomura complained about CC2's difference in directing taste, and so they changed the trailer's style to fit more of SE's.
    - The Osaka KH team are in what seems to be frequent contact with the VIIR team back in Tokyo. Specifically, the KH team relay to the VII team about what successes they've had with UE4.
    - Nomura says the Shinra soldiers will not reappear in future promotion because they have yet to be refined. Compared to Barret, their design is still very rough, and Nomura says that the soldiers need to be detailed or else they won't appear real.
    - Nomura mentions that grains of asphalt looked too big when compared to the size of the characters. He admits that he spent forever getting them to look finer. Kitase also says they're working hard to make the roads look good.
    - Nomura says the quality we've seen in the PV will only get better. This is not representative of the final product.
    - VII's famous opening, where the camera zooms in all across Midgar, etc., will probably be changed in the remake.
    - The remake will have more scenes of people actually living in Midgar.
    - The Guard command is being investigated, but the option to dodge is still available.
    - Kitase says that VIIR's "ATB" is different, and while they still call it that, its formal name will likely change.
    - Another system that is not yet shown involves your party. It is different from party cooperation, though.

To end, here's part of Nojima's message to VII fans:
"This enormous train, FFVII, will take a bit longer to reach your station. Please use this time to prepare yourselves for the journey and battles ahead."

Final Fantasy VII: Remake Will Be Fully Voiced; New Info About World Map, Mini Games

    Regarding Voices…

Nomura: “Basically, it will be fully voiced. We still havent decided the voices of the characters that werent in Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children.”

So does that mean dating events will be fully voiced?

Kitase: “It would be impossible not to. (Laughs.) However, since its different from that time and social situation, we need implement the reproduction of original events carefully.”

Nomura: “Ah, the Honey Bee Inn… (Laughs.)”

    Is the map open world?

Kitase: “We cant say anything yet, but we dont plan on fussing about whether its a so-called open-world or sandbox. But since Nomura is more focused on the creation of the scenery, we want to express an environment character actions affect the scenery.”

    Will there be mini-games?

Kitase: “We want to put the mini-games remain favorable among fans in as much as possible.”

Nomura: “There were a lot of things from big to small, but we need to consider a bit whether its necessary to create them all with the latest technology.”

Kitase: “The development staff is also thinking about what to do with the mini-games.”

    Hows production going?

Kitase: “Were at the stage where we can say were finally getting started. We have ideas regarding battles, too, but it will take time to drop them into the actual game.”

Final Fantasy VIIs 20th anniversary is in 2017. Can we expect anything for its original release date on January 31?

Kitase: “I cant say anything at the moment. (Laughs.)”

Nomura: “Personally, Im waiting for Kingdom Hearts HD 2.8 and World of Final Fantasy in 2016. I think when theyre completed, Ill be able to release new information.”

-In regards to FFVII remake. Looking at the FFXIII saga as a model of release (three full-fledged games). Each game will be the size of a FFXIII game is specifically stated. In other words full scale 30+ hour RPG, and they also say plot wise nothing is off the table in terms of changes. They clarify they aren't changing everything but Kitase, Nomura, and Nojima feel since they were involved with the original game that they have the liberty to add / change what they want while still making fans happy. They also state they want FFVII Remake to gave a much shorter development cycle than FFXV.

10 Questions And Answers About The Final Fantasy VII Remake

Fans have been asking for a FFVII remake for years. What about the gaming landscape makes now the right time?

The landscape was one thing, but it was more that wed been working on the XIII series for the last 10 years. My team and I were mainly focused on that project. Final Fantasy VII Remake would be an equivalent – or even greater – project in terms of scale, and so it would have been hard to do both at the same time. After XIII ended, of course XV is currently being developed by [Hajime] Tabata-sans team, so it presented a time when we can fully place our focus on the Final Fantasy VII Remake.

When the remake was first announced, there was some confusion among fans about its multi-part format. Is comparing it to the Final Fantasy XIII saga fair in that regard? Will each entry have that kind of scope?

It will essentially be a full-scale game for each part of the multi-part series. In XIII, each installment told the story from a different angle. It was kind of like approaching an unknown territory, in a sense. Whereas with Final Fantasy VII Remake, we already have a preexisting story, so it wouldnt really make sense if that isnt encompassed in the multi-part series, and it wouldnt make sense to remake it if we dont encompass that that entire story.

With regards to the current HD capacity and volume, the idea is that we wouldnt be able to encompass it all in just one installment. So, if were just looking at each of these parts, one part should be on par with the scale of one Final Fantasy XIII game.

Have you decided how many installments there will be?

Yeah, we do have an idea on the project side in terms of how many installments it may consist of, but unfortunately, we cant share that at the moment. Of course, as were creating and developing the scenario and the stories, these are things that move in real time. So, the plan may change along the way. But, that said, we do have a vision for how many installments it will consist of.

The Compilation of Final Fantasy VII added new wrinkles to the story and lore behind the game. How is the team approaching the integration of those new elements into the remake?

Its not to say that all or some of the characters from the spin-offs or other Compilation works will appear in the remake, but if there are any areas where we can use the settings or the characters, we do want to try to incorporate it in there, so it gives off that sense of nuance and those other stories existing.

So, there isnt any pressure to include every character and storyline from the Compilation content?

Yes, there may be instances where the characters appear themselves, or are just referenced in dialogue. But, of course, it would be difficult to follow up on everything that happened in this universe. So, maybe some of the characters who werent as famous wont appear or be mentioned. But in terms of the characters and instances that remain in the memories of our fans, we do want to try our best to integrate that in some fashion in the world.

Some fans seem to want a remake that is mainly visual upgrades, with none of the story or gameplay altered. Was that ever considered for the project?

The starting point was – and our executive producer [Shinji] Hashimoto-san has mentioned this – it would even be okay if we just upped the graphics to the quality of Advent Children. But, in terms of game styles and battle systems, its been 20 years since the original, and a lot has changed. Trends have changed, and I believed that we needed to revisit and rethink that aspect for the remake.

What drove the decision to move away from the traditional turn-based system toward action-focused combat?

We havent completely transitioned into action, but as our director [Tetsuya] Nomura-san says, Final Fantasy (in terms of action games) is best represented by Dissidia in the current landscape. In terms of the Final Fantasy action battles people have experienced themselves, that is most familiar to them these days. In terms of the image of the battle system, thats where were getting the feel from. It wont be as action-focused as Dissidia, of course, but the the visuals and how the gameplay feels in essence will be drawn from that Dissidia-esque style.

Not many creators have the chance to revisit a previous project like this. For you personally, is there any aspect of FFVII that youre looking forward to bringing back to life?

Thats a difficult question. There are certain scenes that are ingrained in the memories of our fans – like Cloud dressing a female, or that impactful Aerith scene. At that time, that was the latest technology and the latest graphics, but now it does look a little bit cheap as far as how it looks graphically and how those scenes are staged. So, everyones probably wondering how those scenes will be brought back to life in current, realistic graphics and how they will be expressed. And I myself am interested in that, but its also a challenge. For all of those scenes that people remember, Im wondering how we can meet expectations and express them properly in current-gen graphics.

Im sure there are areas that our fans want to see how we can change, and areas that they dont want changed. The opinions of our fans are probably split on a lot of those elements, so determining from a development standpoint where well be more true to the original versus where we change is something we hope to grasp through communicating with our fans. Also, while we want to understand their concerns, we also want to get them excited for the story and seeing how it can be revamped and refreshed.

So, even if youre familiar with the story, theres still an opportunity to be surprised?

Definitely. We have archived versions of our games, and a lot of times, people buy them and it starts off with nostalgia – but after that, youre essentially following the story you already know. That experience starts to diminish as you proceed through the game and the interest level starts to decline. If its just nostalgia, its just a matter of following the story, and there wouldnt be any surprises. So, in that sense, we want to balance out the areas we would like change versus the areas we dont in order to have that nostalgia, but also the surprises.

Do you see the larger iconic plot points as an opportunity to surprise fans, or are there things that you and the team consider untouchable?

I, along with Nomura-san and [Kazushige] Nojima-san – who are involved with the remake – were involved with the original Final Fantasy VII. We were the people who created it, so in that sense, we dont think anything is untouchable. That isnt to say were changing everything!

Of course, within Square Enix and across the globe, there are people who think its on this holy scale. That there isnt anything we can touch or play around with. But we believe we know the balance between what can be changed versus what needs to be protected.
