    As movie audiences gear up for the next installment of The Hobbit, gamers now have their own Tolkien project to get excited about. Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor is on its way to a game screen near you on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC. Developed by Monolith Productions and published by Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment, we feel the upcoming game showcases some of the gameplay innovation potential now possible on next-generation consoles through its groundbreaking Nemesis System.

    While many previous games set in Middle-earth have revolved around the major events or characters depicted in Tolkien's books, Shadow of Mordor offers a new chapter that fits comfortably between The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. Players control a lone ranger by the name of Talion as he journeys deep into the heart of Mordor in the days before it transforms into a blasted hellscape. Along the way, developer Monolith is exploring a fascinating next-gen approach to enemies, encounters, and storytelling, one in which every player shapes their own story through the choices they make. The Nemesis System assures that every enemy you fight is a named foe, and if they survive their battle with you, they continue to grow, improve, and act in the world, even as you attempt to do the same with Talion. Our cover story recounts our extensive look at the game in action, from combat and leveling to story and setting.

    Warner's freshly announced third-person role-player Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor takes a lot of cues from Warner's Arkham trilogy of Batman games.

    There's rhythm-based combat with counter-attacks and multipliers for good timing, and you're very much the predator toying with your prey.

    The odds are usually stacked in your favour, suggested Game Informer in its December preview of the game. By stepping into the wraith world, the hero can view targets from afar, slow time in combat and even teleport distances to fatally stab enemies in the back - a murderous terrain traversal tool.

    Those wraith abilities, as well as your human ranger abilities, can be levelled up in one of two XP skill trees. You can unlock even more powerful abilities there, too.

    Your power, like Batman's, will scare your enemies. And you can take this a step further with the game's central Nemesis mechanic.

    In Shadow of Mordor, hundreds of enemies will be individually named and capable of levelling up and rising through their own ranks. In other words, some will get away from you and you'll want them to.

    You can take control of an enemy's mind by laying a wraith hand on them - dominating them - when you've bested them in combat. You could send them away as spies to stab their generals in the back at carefully orchestrated moments, or you could send them away to tell of their encounter and sow fear in their ranks.

    Or you could let one kill you and run off to boast to his friends to boast about it. You won't restart from a checkpoint or saved game: the world will go on and you'll slowly come back to life - you're cursed, you see, never to die until you avenge your murdered family.

    The next time you see your orc murderer he'll be a much more satisfying kill. He will have risen in rank because of his kill and gained abilities and fears and vulnerabilities, which you can learn by dominating his lessers. He'll be worth much more XP. He'll also give you a better rune reward, used for modifying your sword, dagger (your son's broken sword) and bow weapons.

    Pour all of that into an open world structure, with side quests etc, and you get an enticing playground to muck around in. Monolith hopes the Nemesis system will mix things up enough for each player that no two playthroughs will be the same.

    GameInformer labelled Shadow of Mordor as "1-Player Action". It's not specifically referred to as a single-player game in the preview, but the way it's described as revolving around one person's actions seem to back the label up.

    There are a handful of screenshots in the preview that show an accomplished but not jaw-dropping game, which is dark and moody and bloody. I can't obviously reproduce them here.

    The Shadow of Mordor story will uncover the origins of the Rings of Power, and is written by Christian Cantamessa, a chief writer of Red Dead Redemption.

    You'll bump into Gollum along the way and you'll find you have much in common: dual-personalities and an affinity with the wraith world. Discovering who or what that wraith is inside you sounds like it will be the overriding plot in the game.

    Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor is due on PC, PS3 and PS4, Xbox 360 and Xbox One, in 2014.

    New Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor screenshots now available

    The Black Gates are infiltrated by Sauron’s army, murdering all in their path. Talion revives from the grave having lost all he holds dear, denied the peace of death… why did he survive?

    Today, Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment and Monolith Productions release five new screenshots and concept art for recently announced Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor.

    These assets include screenshots and concept art that showcase

    Talion - Players take the form of Talion, a ranger who loses his family and everything he holds dear, only to be returned from death by a mysterious Spirit of vengeance.
    Mordor

    Mordor - Set between The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor begins on the night of Sauron’s return to Mordor, throwing the region into turmoil.

    Nemesis System - Discover a powerful and dynamic next-gen gameplay mechanic that allows players’ actions to shape enemy relationships and characteristics, creating personal and unique stories and gameplay arcs that remain persistent even after death.

    Wraith abilities - Players command Wraith Powers to orchestrate and execute their vengeance to outwit enemies, infiltrate the ranks, and dominate within an adaptive world.

    Melee combat - A multitude of enemies will require different tactics, encouraging the player to advance their skills, abilities and weapons to become legendary through a system of rune rewards crafted according to the player's strategy.

    About the game

    Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor delivers a dark story of retribution as players will assume the role of Talion, a ranger who loses everything on the night of Sauron's return to Mordor. As Talion's personal vendetta unfolds, players uncover the mystery of the Spirit that compels him, discover the origin of the Rings of Power and confront the ultimate nemesis.

    With a dynamic next-gen game environment powered by the Nemesis System, players orchestrate their personal plan of vengeance as they bend Mordor to their will; ensuring a unique experience to all players. Every enemy players face is a unique individual, differentiated by their personality, strengths and weaknesses.

    The experience of death leaves a lasting impression on the game world and the morale among the forces of Sauron. Even the lowliest of grunts have potential to become a serious threat to Talion. When Talion is killed in battle, the Orc who lands the killing blow will be promoted in rank and added to the list of officers that Talion will need to take out. Even the lowliest of minions can kill Talion, and their promotion will create a new challenge for players. When revived at the various Forge Towers across the zones, they'll see that their death has motivated forces of Sauron, which will make creating chaos a bit more challenging.

    Moreover, enemies that escape from Talion during combat will live to see another day and alter their tactics for when players encounter them again. This creates another layer of challenge that emphasizes strategy. Some battles may not be worth running blade first into and will only result in player’s death and a new captain or war chief to eliminate.

    Καλά, μιλάμε για ξεδιάντροπη αντιγραφή όμως. Κυριολεκτικά re-skinned AC με copy/paste Arkham σύστημα μάχης.
    Δεν με χαλάει όμως. Φαίνεται αρκετά καλό. Αυτό που με χαλάει είναι ότι το xbox είναι lead platform, όπως φαίνεται στο walkthrough.

    Μπορει να ειναι απο pc.Πως καταλαβες οτι ειναι απο xbox?

    Και εμενα μου αρεσε αυτο που ειδα παντως εστω και αν αντιγραφει καποια αλλα παιχνιδια.Βλεπω εχει αρκετα δικα του στοιχεια.

    Δες το video και πρόσεξε κάποιες φορές που εμφανίζονται τα πλήκτρα του controller με A,Y,X και δεν θυμάμαι ποιο άλλο είναι του xbox. Μπορεί βέβαια απλά να χρησιμοποιούν xbox controller σε PC build.

    Χωρίς να είμαι μέγας πιστός και λάτρης της σειράς LOTR,μου άρεσε αυτό που είδα, άσχετα αν όντως έχει πέσει πολύ αντιγραφή.

    το θεμα με μενα ειναι ομως οτι το assasins δεν μου αρεσε λογω αργου gameplay,κακιας μαχης και γενικοτερα η ιστορια δεν με ενδιεφερε και τοσο ενω το lotr παντα το γουσταρα ως fan των rpg! και οτι παιχνιδι εβγαινε το επαιζα
