Sony, Samsung dominate Blu-ray set-top sales
Despite new offerings from companies like Panasonic and LG, Sony captured 60% of Blu-ray stand-alone player sales for the week ending November 24th (which includes Black Friday sales data). Coming in second was Samsung with 37% followed by Panasonic with 5% of total sales.

Both Panasonic and Samsung have made great strides in the past few weeks in order to boost their share of the market. Samsung has heavily discounted their BD-P1400 player (which can now be found for under $300) while Panasonic has introduced the first BD Profile v1.1 player, the DMP-BD30, which is able to playback picture-in-picture extras.

    To Blu-ray HD-DVD

Normally when we cover a story about Blu-ray, it comes with the whole "oh, it's outselling HD DVD 2:1" smack talk. However, we can't actually say that for the week ending December 9th. Instead, we can say "oh, it's outselling HD DVD 3:1" and crack a sly grin. How did Blu-ray wipe the floor with their high-definition competitor? It was the third Pirates of the Caribbean film -- Superbad helped out, too.

The funny thing to remember is that while between high-definition formats, Blu-ray is cleaning up, it's still such a miniature slice of the retail movie pie. So, while we do get our kicks by touting these numbers every so often, it's sort of a hollow victory until the madness subsides and the world decides on a single format to ever so slowly replace regular DVDs. Until then, when Christmas rolls around, we expect a large portion of you to have a Disney-inspired pirate movie under your tree. Next week will prove interesting as the latest Harry Potter film releases on both formats -- place your bets!

Sony is dominating Blu-ray standalone sales

To date, Sony is overwhelmingly dominating Blu-ray standalone sales, but new LG and Panasonic players are hoping to steal part of the market.

As of December 1st, Sony owned 60 percent of all BD unit sales (not even including the PlayStation 3) and Samsung is second at 32 percent. Panasonic and LG each command a small 5 percent share.

Sony Blu-ray Player Dips Below $300 Mark

The latest in a series of price drops for high-def players on both side of the aisle, several retailers have dropped their prices on Sony's BDP-S300 to record-low levels.

The player, which carries a $399 MSRP, is now being sold by Best Buy and Circuit City for just $299. At press time, Amazon.com was offering the player for just $294.

This new price drop comes only a week after the same retailers dropped their prices on Samsung's BDP-1400 Blu-ray player to similar levels (by mid-week, Amazon was selling that model for $270, setting a new low-price record for a Blu-ray player).

According to DisplaySearch data released late last week, Sony led sales of standalone Blu-ray players as of late November by a wide margin, capturing a full 60% of all BD unit sales, followed by Samsung with 37%.

The Sony price reduction would seem to contradict earlier statements by execs at the company, who -- as recently as last month -- said they didn't expect their BD hardware to decline much lower than the $400 level through the holiday season.

More Than One-Third of HD DVD Players are Xbox 360 HD DVD Drives

Buried in Novembers NPD video game sales data is an interesting bit regarding the make-up of HD DVD hardware owners. According to the tracking firm, the Xbox 360 HD DVD add-on drive accessory has sold a collective 269,000 units in the U.S., making for a 3.4 percent attach rate with the console.

Paramount's Switch Failed To Turn Market

Scott Hettrick of hollywoodinhidef blogs about a recent report from a Research/analyst firm, Understanding & Solutions, about Paramounts role in the hi-def movie wars and their failure to turn the market in favor of HD DVD.

Research/analyst firm Understanding & Solutions has issued a report today saying that Paramount's switch to go exclusive HD DVD has failed to turn the market in favor of that format and that Blu-ray continues to dominate the market with stronger studio support and sales volumes.

If they can't get it done with the cheapest players and three of the biggest movies of the year in "Transformers" and "Shrek the Third" from Paramount/DreamWorks and "Bourne Ultimatum from Universal," that doesn't leave them many options.

I wonder how Microsoft/Toshiba are feeling about that $150 million investment, especially since Toshiba's earnings have taken such a hit.

Panasonic whittles thinnest Blu-ray drive for laptops down to 9.5mm

While certain notable holdouts have yet to even announce HD disc-based products, it looks like the rest of modern civilization is getting ready to move the discs to an even slimmer set of laptops. Panasonic's latest burner for laptops is down to a mere 9.5mm thick, easily besting the company's previous 12.7mm Blu-ray drives. The drive can read and write Blu-ray discs at 2x, and supports DVD and CD read / write functions aplenty. Toshiba is on record claiming that HD DVD burners can be slimmed down to 7mm and will eventually be besting Blu-ray in this category, but so far only DVD has gone that slim. Panasonic will debut the new drive next month at CES.

Apple Set to Ship Macs with Blu-ray

In a report issued to clients early Thursday morning, American Technology Research analyst Shaw Wu cited sources who say the Cupertino-based Mac maker, which already occupies a seat on the Blu-ray consortium, is set to begin shipping some of its computers with support for the next-generation DVD format.

"We believe this is a key announcement as current Macs ship with the DVD format and Sony gains a strong ally in Blu-ray," the analyst told clients. He added that Disney, for which Apple chief executive Steve Jobs is a Director, is a firm supporter of Blu-ray, while rival Microsoft Corp. has placed most of its eggs in the HD-DVD basket.

It's all over and Blu-ray has won, says one analyst. Meanwhile, primary HD DVD backer Toshiba said it's going to evaluate potential next steps.

Warner Bros.' sudden announcement that they would exclusively support Blu-ray over HD DVD starting this May came as a big surprise to many, and it's a move that many believe could finally signal the end of the high-definition movie format battle.
As cited by The New York Times, Richard Greenfield, a media analyst with Pali Research, said that Warner Bros. has effectively ended the war. "We expect HD DVD to 'die' a quick death," he said. Greenfield also points out that of the two studios committed to HD DVD, NBC Universal never committed to backing HD DVD exclusively. As for Paramount/Dreamworks, which is exclusive, he wonders if there is some sort of "escape clause."
He further speculates that some consumers upon hearing about the Warner Bros. news might go return their Christmas HD DVD players and exchange them for Blu-ray devices. No matter how you look at it, it's not good for the HD DVD camp right now, and you have to wonder what will happen to the Xbox 360 HD DVD player sales. Conversely, this could give Sony's PS3 another lift.
As for Toshiba, one of the primary backers of HD DVD along with Microsoft, the company is not quite ready to throw in the towel, but they're "evaluating potential next steps." Toshiba issued this statement shortly after the Warner Bros. news:

"Toshiba is quite surprised by Warner Bros.' decision to abandon HD DVD in favor of Blu-ray, despite the fact that there are various contracts in place between our companies concerning the support of HD DVD. As central members of the DVD Forum, we have long maintained a close partnership with Warner Bros. We worked closely together to help standardize the first-generation DVD format as well as to define and shape HD DVD as its next-generation successor.
We were particularly disappointed that this decision was made in spite of the significant momentum HD DVD has gained in the US market as well as other regions in 2007. HD DVD players and PCs have outsold Blu-ray in the US market in 2007.
We will assess the potential impact of this announcement with the other HD DVD partner companies and evaluate potential next steps. We remain firm in our belief that HD DVD is the format best suited to the wants and needs of the consumer."

    Michael bay speaks again...

" Well another studio down. Maybe I was right? Blu ray is just better. HD will die a slow death. It's what I predicted a year ago. Now with Warner's down for the count with Blu Ray. That makes it easier for Wal-Mart to push Blu Ray. And whatever Wal-Mart pushes - wins. Hd better start giving out those $120 million dollars checks to stay alive. Maybe they can give me some so I can give it to my Make-A-Wish charity, just to shut me up. Have faith people Transformers will come out in Blu-ray one day!"
