Crisis Core PSP Sells Out in Japan
Hundreds line up for limited edition PSP slim.

The PSP-2000 is off to a great start in Japan, and it's not even officially out yet! Square Enix and Sony teamed up for a limited edition PSP-2000 bundle to accompany the 9/13 Japanese release of Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII. This is exactly one week before the PSP slim sees full release throughout the now leaderless nation.

Included in the 25,890 yen bundle are a retail copy of Crisis Core, a specially crafted Crystal White PSP-2000 unit covered in Tetsuya Nomura artwork, and a Buster Sword strap. Retailers also threw in a Crisis Core inner earphone set, supposedly as a pre-order bonus, although anyone who lined up on launch day was given the gift. All this in a special box that just screams collectors' edition.

This bundle was produced in limited quantities of just 77,777. This is two to three times what the PSP sells in an average week, so we were interested in seeing if the bundle would actually sell out, or if it would rot on store shelves like Square Enix's It's a Wonderful World DS Lite bundle.

We headed out to our local Bic Camera in Tokyo's Shibuya area just before opening time and found a line of five people, with store managers encouraging passersby to queue up. Another Bic Camera in the area had a line about ten times as long, but it too was welcoming additional purchasers straight through opening time.

Neither store was sold out immediately after opening. Two hours later, however, and we could no longer find the bundle at the few shops surrounding Shibuya Station.

Based on reports from Famitsu.com, this scene was repeated throughout Tokyo, although on a larger scale depending on where you went. At the Ikebukuro Bic Camera, over 250 people had lined up outside of the shop forty-five minutes prior to opening. The Shinjuku Yodobashi Camera had a line of 300, and was sold out by the 10:00 opening time.

Famitsu flexed its Japanese vocabulary and actually spoke to a few who had chosen to line up. Some customers said that they were purchasing the bundle because they happen to be Final Fantasy VII fans. Others were more interested in getting the slim model PSP in advance. Even our smaller scale Bic Camera in Shibuya had a few people inquire if the PSP-2000 could be purchased on its own.

A major Square Enix executive was on hand at the Shinjuku Yodobashi. Famitsu cornered Crisis Core's executive producer Shinji Hashimoto, who commented, "This is the first time in the world that a third party has released a product bundled with a new system, so we were nervous. However, just seeing all these customers puts us a bit at ease."

Famitsu also got some commentary from the Yodobashi staff, who confirmed that Crisis Core on its own managed extremely strong sales in its first day. Regarding the official launch of the PSP-2000 next week, a store representative said, "We expect customer turnout at today's level, or more. However, unlike today, it's not a limited edition, so it's doubtful that it will sell out in the AM hours."

Sony was partially prepared for the PSP-2000's early release. It managed to ship out the special AV, D-terminal, S-Video and Component cables required to connect the new model to a television. Those who want the 1seg tuner or an extra battery pack will have to wait until 9/20.

At the very least, Crisis Core's release and the apparent sellout of the bundle version should push the PSP's weekly sales total above the 77,777 mark. The real question by which the PSP's fortunes will be judged is how many current PSP owners will pick up the game by itself, and how many will line up next week for the standard PSP-2000 model.

Crisis Core loads infinitely faster on PSP-2000

The PSP-2000 didn't produce improved load times for us, but it looks like new PSP software, like Final Fantasy VII: Crisis Core, will fare differently. As showcased by this user video, this action RPG runs quite smoothly on the new hardware, but chugs along at an almost painful pace on the PSP Phat. This demonstration is quite possibly the most convincing we've seen that the PSP-2000 is a worthwhile upgrade for old owners. But, are you ready to buy a new system? Or will you simply wait it out?

Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII Import Preview

Whether you’re a Final Fantasy VII fan or not, there is no denying what the title did for role-playing genre. It was the company’s first shot at a 3D RPG and it ended up being one of, if not their most, popular titles. Fanboys and critics aside, the story left many wanting more. A few years ago, Square Enix released Final Fantasy VII Advent Children, a CG movie sequel to the game, and once again the fans loved every minute. But there were still questions about the story. Crisis Core on the PSP aims to finish the storyline by adding the remaining bits and pieces and offering up the ultimate fan service.

If you haven’t played Final Fantasy VII, skip this paragraph and just play the game, as there’s a spoiler to the 10-year-old game. It would be easy to say that Crisis Core tells the story of 1st class SOLDIER Zack Fair, but it’s really more complicated than that. In Final Fantasy VII, Cloud Strife, the protagonist, thinks Zack’s memories and experiences are his own and later has a mental breakdown when he finds out his memories are wrong. He eventually remembers the real truth, but players only saw a small portion of it. This game tells the full story of how Cloud and Zack became best friends and their ties to Sephiroth and Aeris as well as the new characters Genesis and Angeal.

After spending some time with the game, the best way to explain the gameplay would be a combination of battles and dialogue. The game is extremely story-heavy, giving the player every bit of information they would want to squeeze out of the game. From what we played, there is much less exploration than the previous Final Fantasy games. Instead of the exploration, Zack can go on a ton of side missions for SOLDIER where he will find items, get experience and even face summon creatures.

Instead of using a classic turned-based combat system, Square Enix has created a new real-time system that allows players to run around during a battle. This system will allow players to run behind an opponent for critical hit or to dodge their attacks. It will take a little getting use to at first, but it feels solid. On the HUD, there is a line of actions to choose from that are easily selected by using R and L on the PSP and then hitting circle to execute. Players can customize the actions with attacks, spells and items via the Materia system. Getting to know where your best actions are and switching between them with confidence takes a little time, but it can be mastered before the first hour of the game has passed.

Visually, Crisis Core is one of the best to hit the PSP. The model and texture work are top notch, and the Advent Children style FMV cut-scenes are gorgeous on the 16x9 screen. Battles transition from the field into the action in real time with no loading. About 40 percent of the game’s dialogue is voice acted, with the remaining using text. The real treat though is the music. Some of the best themes from Final Fantasy VII have been brought back and upgraded from the MIDI file sound as well as some great new pieces.

Fans of the Final Fantasy VII universe would be depriving themselves if they skip out on this when the English version hits the shores in 2008. Some people may be turned off by the combat to dialogue and back again gameplay. But every line seems to be exactly what a fan would want to hear. Anyone that had any questions will surly have their minds put at ease after playing this game. Square Enix has gone out of their way to create one of the biggest fan-service games they have ever attempted with Crisis Core.
