Warner Bros. Entertainment to Release its High-Definition DVD Titles Exclusively in the Blu-Ray Disc Format Beginning Later This Year
January 04, 2008

In response to consumer demand, Warner Bros. Entertainment will release its high-definition DVD titles exclusively in the Blu-ray disc format beginning later this year, it was announced today by Barry Meyer, Chairman & CEO, Warner Bros. and Kevin Tsujihara, President, Warner Bros. Home Entertainment Group.

"Warner Bros.' move to exclusively release in the Blu-ray disc format is a strategic decision focused on the long term and the most direct way to give consumers what they want," said Meyer. "The window of opportunity for high-definition DVD could be missed if format confusion continues to linger. We believe that exclusively distributing in Blu-ray will further the potential for mass market success and ultimately benefit retailers, producers, and most importantly, consumers."

Warner Home Video will continue to release its titles in standard DVD format and Blu-ray. After a short window following their standard DVD and Blu-ray releases, all new titles will continue to be released in HD DVD until the end of May 2008.

"Warner Bros. has produced in both high-definition formats in an effort to provide consumer choice, foster mainstream adoption and drive down hardware prices," said Jeff Bewkes, President and Chief Executive Officer, Time Warner Inc., the parent company of Warner Bros. Entertainment. "Today's decision by Warner Bros. to distribute in a single format comes at the right time and is the best decision both for consumers and Time Warner."

"A two-format landscape has led to consumer confusion and indifference toward high definition, which has kept the technology from reaching mass adoption and becoming the important revenue stream that it can be for the industry," said Tsujihara. "Consumers have clearly chosen Blu-ray, and we believe that recognizing this preference is the right step in making this great home entertainment experience accessible to the widest possible audience. Warner Bros. has worked very closely with the Toshiba Corporation in promoting high definition media and we have enormous respect for their efforts. We look forward to working with them on other projects in the future."

Εγώ ήμουν έτοιμος να τα πάρω μόνο και μόνο για να ενισχύσω την κλίση της προς το Μπλου. Τώρα που το έκανε εννοείτε ότι θα τα πάρω όλα! Το μόνο που με σταμάτησε από το να τα πάρω από play, είναι οι υπότιτλοι, όχι για μένα, εγώ απεχθάνομαι τις μεταφράσεις, αλλά καμιά βαφτισιμιά να βάλω να τα δει, αργότερα κανά ανηψάκι, κανά παιδάκι (έχω καιρό βέβαια για αυτά, μέχρι τότε θα έχει βγει το επόμενο φορμάτ), λέω ας περιμένω ο Harry να γίνει Χάρης...

Νομίζω μπήκε ημερομηνία λήξης στο Hd-dvd ... ένα χρόνο ακόμα όσο ισχύει η πληρωμένη συμφωνία με την paramount, και μετά τέλος.

New York Times: Did Warner Brothers Just Kill HD DVD?

Until now, the war between the formats has seemed like a standoff. Of the big studios, Disney, Fox and Sony have backed Blu-ray. NBC Universal and Viacom back HD DVD.

Richard Greenfield, the media analyst with Pali Research, wrote that this marks the end of the format wars: “We expect HD DVD to ‘die’ a quick death.” He noted that NBC Universal has not committed to backing HD DVD exclusively. Viacom’s studios — Paramount and Dreamworks — have an exclusive deal with the backers of HD DVD, but Mr. Greenfield wonders if there is an escape clause.

Mr. Greenfield further wonders if consumers, on hearing this news, will return their Christmas HD DVD players and exchange them for Blu-ray devices. I’m not so sure that many people pay that close attention to Hollywood. But I certainly wouldn’t spend money on an HD DVD player until this all sorts out.

Warner: No Payoff for Move to Blu-ray

Warner Home Entertainment President Kevin Tsujihara says the studio took no pay-offs to exclusively back Blu-ray.

In a post-announcement conference call, Tsujihara flatly denied rumors that studio had accepted anywhere from 250M to $500M in exchange for dropping its HD DVD format support.

According to the exec, Warner's sole motivation in dropping its HD DVD format support was to ensure growth of the "category" and the long-term health of the industry.

αντε καιρος ηταν να τελεινει πλεον και αυτος ο γελειος πολεμος, θελω να δω πως νιωθουν τωρα οι paramount και η microsoft που πεταξε 150M δολαρια για να στηριξει το χειροτερο format, το 2008 μας μπηκε με πολυ καλα νεα πρωτα το ps3 στις τελευταιες εβδομαδες του δεκεμεβρη πουλησε περισσοτερο απο το 360 και τωρα με αυτη τν κινηση το μελον του ps3 προβλεπεται πολυ καλο
