The console sold slightly more than 500,000 units on its first day, in November 2000. This marked an industry record for the fastest-selling game console. Sony planned to ship 100,000 units per week for the remainder of the year, for a total of 1.3 million by the end of the year. It planned to ship three million units by the end of the March of the following year.[6]
Xbox 360

The Xbox 360 began production only 69 days before launch,[7][8] and Microsoft was not able to supply enough systems to meet initial consumer demand in Europe or North America.[9] Forty thousand units were offered for sale on auction site eBay during the initial week of release, 10% of the total supply.[10] By year's end, Microsoft had shipped 1.5 million units, including 900,000 in North America, 500,000 in Europe, and 100,000 in Japan.[11]
