Deus Ex 3 Site Launches + Five things you can be pretty sure of about Deus Ex 3 !!!

    Official Site: http://www.deusex3.com/
    Backround image:

Five things you can be pretty sure of about Deus Ex 3

    1. It'll be primarily a console game. Sorry. We wish it weren't so, but all major multi-platform titles are these days, and it's definitely not going to be a PC exclusive.

    2. It won't take after Invisible War - at least not intentionally. Deus Ex 2 wasn't an accident, it was an intentional shift toward a shorter game type with more freedom in which factions you could work for, and a further future sci-fi setting. And given the general fanbase reaction to it, no sane developer in the world is going to try that again.

    3. It won't be as long as Deus Ex. No-one can afford to make thirty-five hour action games to today's graphical standards - art and asset costs are far too high, and if Valve's stats are anything to go by, less than half of gamers can even be bothered to finish a five-hour game.

    4. It will disappoint almost all Deus Ex fans. Sorry again. This is not to say it won't be great, it's to say that Deus Ex fans are insane. I know because I'm one of them. If Deus Ex 3 isn't exactly the same as Deus Ex 1, possibly with slightly prettier graphics and more fluid animation, we will go batshit. I might mail someone my left ear. I'm getting angry just thinking about the notion of a game that isn't Deus Ex to the letter. We're all like this, Deus Ex broke our brain in some fundamental way that renders us unable to appreciate anything else without that dark caveat lurking at the back of our minds: "This isn't Deus Ex." Crysis isn't Deus Ex. Stalker isn't Deus Ex. Bioshock isn't Deus Ex. Deus Ex 2 isn't Deus Ex. When Jesus Christ himself returns to save every one of our souls, there'll be a grouchy huddle of pallid nerds muttering "Eh, he's no Deus Ex."

    5. It'll be awesome. This is just a feeling I have. There's too much that's great about Deus Ex to screw up an honest attempt to recapture that game's glory. In Walton Simon's words: "We got a lot of things right when we made you, Denton." An e-mail exchange between my editor and I back in May, when Deus Ex 3 murmurs first started:

    From: Tom Francis
    To: PC Gamer
I'm actually excited about this. There's no chance they'll do anything but enrage the fanbase, but so much was good about Deus Ex that aping any of it - even if they miss the point - ought to produce a really interesting game.

I'd be excited about any first-person action RPG, and I'd be excited about any near-future secret-agent thriller, and I'd be excited about anything remotely emergent. They're bound to manage one of the three, right?

    From: Ross Atherton
    To: Tom Francis
So what you're saying is, you're quite excited?

Deus Ex 3 to use Tomb Raider Legend game engine

Studio head of Eidos Montreal says team will share tech with Crystal Dynamics as he discusses plans for franchise Eidos has big plans for the new installment in its esteemed Deus Ex franchise, and will be using the game engine from another of its next-gen revamps, Lara Croft Tomb Raider, to power the new game.

Technology is being shared between Tomb Raider team Crystal Dynamics and new studio Eidos Montreal to help give Deus Ex 3 a technical headstart, studio head Stephane D'Astous, who previously worked for Ubisoft Montreal, told Develop in an exclusive interview.

He explained: "This is a very important factor for us. In former positions where i worked technology was always a grey zone, a question mark. I'm relieved that here at Eidos we have two great internal engines - one from IO and one from Crystal. We chose the Crystal engine because we plan to help develop this engine more and then share it back with the rest of the company, the other Eidos studios. Having that technology from the start gives us a great advantage and foundation for our coders - there are no doubts about the approach, and we have few uncertainties. We just want to all work together on improving the same technology as we develop our game."

Some uncertainties about the new Deus Ex title - announced at the official opening of Eidos Montreal at the start of the week - do exist in the minds of some commentators, who have pointed out that none of the original creative staff are not involved in the new title.

However D'Astous was confident that his new team can rise to the challenge.

"All the developers working on Deus Ex 3 pretty much know the series inside and out - coming here, they were pretty aware of the opportunity and what they could do," he said.

"We did our research to find out what worked well, what people enjoyed about it - especially the first game. The second was a success in the eyes of some, but had some ups and downs, so we've tried to identify what worked well in that game. Most importantly, we're extracting what worked well and can be applied now. In the five, six years since that series arrived technology has changed significantly and we have to be careful - we don't want to create more of the same. Instead we've identified the features that can be transposed well onto new technology that arrived several years later."

Eidos Montreal's ambitions have already won over the staff at its publishing HQ, he added: "We have done our homework and we have done a lot of research into it. Our proof of concept was approve last month on our first try - I think we've impressed our colleagues back in the UK. We were so pleased that he vision we have for the game was shared and accepted by them. Now the challenge is to realise our conception into concrete code."

The full interview with D'Astous can be read here.

What's the Deal with Deus Ex 3?

Eidos Montreal general manager Stephane D'Astous proves himself a true Canadian in the first moments of the conversation. Before 1UP can get to the subject at hand -- last week's anticipated announcement of Deus Ex 3 -- he almost laboriously turns the conversation to the weather. "We haven't got so much wind," he says, "but it's pretty damp. It gets through the clothes and to the bone."

Soon cold will be the least of D'Astous's worries; his team at the newly-formed Eidos Montreal studio has been given the opportunity to create the next chapter in a much-loved and very divisive franchise. Naturally, forums exploded to this announcement with a healthy mix of excitement and skepticism. A brand new studio taking on a series that had already been mishandled once before? D'Astous agreed to speak with 1UP about how this happened and Eidos Montreal's plans for Deus Ex 3.

    Tidbits from the interview:
    - Platforms will be announced in maybe early 2008 or maybe summer. But they're not working on current or last gen, it's next-gen and PC.
    - No one in the Eidos Montreal team has worked on the previous Deus Ex games.
    - They want to conserve the dialogue, choice versus consequences, the depth and richness of Deus Ex.

One of the greatest RPGs (well, FPS/RPGs) of all time is coming back out of hibernation. And, appropriately for a game about conspiracies, developer Eidos is being very secretive about it. All that’s confirmed is that it’s being made by a team at the Eidos Montreal studio, using an enhanced version of the Tomb Raider: Anniversary engine.

The team comprises veterans of the Splinter Cell, Homeworld and Myst series, but not the team behind the original game or its notoriously inferior sequel Deus Ex: Invisible War. That said, Deus Ex’s lead designer, Harvey Smith, recently departed Midway in dramatic fashion (he told an audience at the Montreal Game Summit that his latest project, BlackSite, “deserved” the shocking reviews it received, and left the company “by mutual agreement” the following day) so we wouldn’t be surprised if he joined up any day now.

As for the game’s content, all our information has been extracted from a single short teaser movie that you can view here. It shows a cybernetically enhanced foetus, followed by rapid, almost subliminal images. Freeze-framing shows riots and social tension between artificially augmented people and the unenhanced – you can see these freeze-frame images to the right. The date in one image is 2027, 25 years before the setting of Deus Ex.

If the foetus, whose nametag reads ‘Emile’, is an adult character in Deus Ex 3, that puts the setting five years before the events of the original. Which is around the time the protagonist’s brother, Paul Denton, takes on his first missions – so expect to be caught up in the opening stages of the vast conspiracy that played out in the original Deus Ex. But we’re guessing, and as Eidos has only put out a teaser trailer, we don’t foresee the game appearing until the end of 2009. With luck there’ll be more details at E3 or Leipzig, and we’ll bring you the facts then.

First details on Deus Ex 3 revealed

You're cast as average joe Adam Jensen, who works as a private security officer at a technology lab specialising in biomechanical augmentations, a forerunner to the sort of nanotechnology shown in the original Deus Ex. One day the path of his life is unexpectedly altered as a team of black ops commandos break into his company's HQ, and using a security plan from Jensen's own hand, a mass slaughter ensues and the conspiracy begins.

"Deus Ex 3's vision of the future sees holographic screens flicker atop ferries moving back and forth in front of the Shanghai skyline, now split into two layers with the rich on the top and the poor in perpetual twilight below," says PCZ.

Eidos Montreal says it's more than aware of fan reaction to controversial second game, Invisible War, and promises mistakes, such as limiting ammo types to just one, won't be repeated.

This said, they are doing their utmost to please newcomers as well as existing fans. Perhaps controversially this time around combat won't be influenced by stats, but will rely purely on your personal marksmanship skills. Instead stats will influence "a vast array of fully upgradeable and customisable weapons", and you'll be able to tailor your arsenal to your play style with mag upgrades, scopes and other add-ons.

What's more, stealth will now rely on a cover system rather than shadows, and damage will be dealt with by a very Call of Duty-style auto-heal. There's probably going to be some debate over those two.

Augmentations have been bumped up and sound fantastic. 20 have been promised for the final game, ranging from 'bungee jump' tentacles that shoot from your back and anchor to a wall when you jump off a building, and the ability to punch through walls to grab enemies in neighbouring rooms.

Deus Ex 3 is an RPG, According to Eidos

Deus Ex 3 is indeed an RPG. It's a hybrid action/RPG just like the first game. There is a skill system where you upgrade your character (Adam) based off experience points you earn and you can do the same thing with weapons. It's a game with a very detailed plot with numerous characters you interact with. The gameplay takes the form of a consequence-driven multi-path, multi-solution approach in a non-linear space.

For stealth, that is another major pillar of gameplay and we do have it. The difference is that it's now cover-based rather than "shadow/light-based" as in the past games.

Hopefully that makes Andy and the rest of you a litte less sad!
