Hey guys, Rich and I posted some replies in the comments, but I'll reiterate a bit here. I know I can't appease many of you, but I'll at least give you a brief idea on how we do this.
First of all, we currently cannot capture in HDMI. The handshaking prohibits us from doing it, and there is currently not a satisfactory solution. We will gladly do so when we can.
All comparison vids are done in 720p through component cables. The equipment and settings we use for each system are identical.
The signals are being sent directly through professional equipment and are recorded before they are output to the TV.
We do these comparisons so that users can get an idea which
build of the game is running better. Every game is different. These videos aren't here to prove that one piece of hardware is better than another. Many of us have PS3s at home and enjoy them just as much as you do.
Personally, I don't think the brightness of the image should even be a factor when you're looking at the comparison videos. Instead look for differences in texture detail, number of objects on-screen, polygon models, stuttering, etc. Color differences can be compensated for on your set, these other issues are purely about how well the game is running. If they both look identical in those areas, then you can make your decision based on other factors.
