MGS4 Contains Metal Gear Online Starter Pack: DLC to Follow


From an interview at CES 2008, where Kojima’s Playstation 3 offering is being demoed to a lucky few, comes the confirmed news that Metal Gear Online will be included with the purchase of the single player game, MGS4. It is, however, an online starter pack. News has been flip flopping over whether Metal Gear Online will be included with MGS4, or whether it will be purchased separately. In an interview with Gamespot, Konami’s director of Konami, puts the rumours to rest. A Metal Gear Online starter pack will be included in the shipped MGS4 game.
They haven’t yet disclosed how many maps there will be in the pack, but “there will be an element of the online component within Metal Gear 4, to capture that online experience.”
What does this imply? Does this mean the fully featured Metal Gear Online will be available separately, where MGS4 owners will own a fraction of this? It’s my belief that MGS4 will be the sole way to purchase Metal Gear Online, where the starter pack will then be fleshed out throughout 2008, adding new maps through downloadable content. If this is the case, then it’s a pretty sweet deal.

Getting a Metal Gears Solid game and an online component that will be further supported, is a dream come true. If the fully featured Metal Gear Online was available separately from the get go, it would make Metal Gear fans buy two games instead of one.
Konami’s director supports my suspicions that Metal Gear Online will only be purchasable through MGS4 in her following statement: “Within the rest of the year we will be stragically providing content.”
Kojima’s MGS4 is set for release in Q2 of this year.

Metal Gear Solid 4 at Bug Testing Phase: No Further Delays


Yes we’ve gone a bit top heavy on the Metal Gear Solid 4 news, but it’s just coming in thick and fast. And we’ll take it while we can when we suspect Kojima hibernation is imminent. Today we bring you the exciting news that Kojima doesn’t want to disappoint his fans any longer - there will be no further delay for MGS4, as confirmed in the Kojima Report Podcast.
On this weeks Kojima Report Session, Ryan Payton (the game’s Assistant Producer) lets us in on some titibits on MGS4’s release date. There is no set date for release, since conversations are still continuing between Kojima and marketing, but they are definitely concentrating on Q2 of this year. Yes, you heard it here first; the title is not going to slip.
The whole team and Kojima himself are committed to Q2 2008. Ryan even tells us that Kojima was embarrassed by the slip to 2008 and that he doesn’t want to further delay the game.
I can hear you all murmuring “Yeah right!”, but hey, there’s actually more good evidence to support this. Ryan tells us that the game is “on the eve of the bug checking phase”, where the game is very nearly feature complete. MGS4 can even be played from start to finish.
Even though parts, such as the opening movie, are still missing, the remaining development time is filled with bug testing, tuning and last minute features. This is the last push for MGS4. Hurrah!
Although a specific date is still speculation, MGS4 will be released simultaneously worldwide (within the same week) in Q2 2008. You can put money on it. $60 would be a good bet.

Ryan Paton to announce the next series of Metal Gear?

In the latest Kojima Pro podcast, MGS4 executive producer Ryan Paton and guest Mark MacDonald have made a little bet. The bet is who will win the football on Saturday. If the Packers win, Ryan will get permission to announce something early which they weren't planning to announce until later on. Kojima already confirmed live to me at GC in August 2007 that "Metal Gear is like James Bond - it will never end". So this could easily be the next Metal Gear *something* to come out.

Metal Gear Solid 4 Almost Done

One of the biggest questions for PS3 action fans has been when Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots will finally come out. With the title pushed late last year to Q2 2008, Snake fans weren't sure if the game would actually come out at that time, or if it would suffer a further delay. Well, according to Shack News, on the latest Kojima Productions Report podcast, Assistant Producer Ryan Payton announced that the game is in its "last push." He further confirmed that the game is fully playable and is currently about to go through extensive bug testing.

"Mr. Kojima of all people is really committed to [the date] because he really hates to disappoint people, and I know he is embarrassed by what happened with the 2007 slip into 2008," said Payton. Some features may be added, but "for the majority of the team, this is the end."

This bodes well for the title coming out during the projected Q2 2008 window by Konami of Japan, and Payton mentioned within the podcast that a near-simultaneous release is planned for the game, with most territories receiving the game within days of each other. Upcoming details on the release date, contents of the game, and other details were not available. Similarly, answering questions about MGS4 going to the Xbox 360 weren't answered in the podcast, although Payton alluded to an "emergence day" similar to that of Gears of War.

We tried to contact Konami of America for comment, but were unable to receive a statement from them at the time this piece was published. Rest assured, though, that we'll have any additional information as soon as it becomes available.
