    Default Playstation Eye

Το νέο Playstation Eye που περιμένουμε για το PS3

Sony Computer Entertainment Europe announces the imminent arrival of PLAYSTATION® Eye for PLAYSTATION 3.
Entertainment on PLAYSTATION 3 continues to evolve thanks to the arrival of PLAYSTATION Eye in 2007. The motion-sensitive camera, which includes a noise cancelling microphone all within a sleek package, ushers in the next generation of camera technology for the PlayStation family.
Incorporating significant advances in USB camera and microphone technology, PLAYSTATION Eye features low-light sensing to ensure crisp, perfectly exposed video in poorly lit areas.
A faster frame rate (up to a data-busting 120 frames per second - most films are shown at 24 fps in cinemas) and two-position zoom offers an enhanced game experience with improved tracking and responsiveness, as well as close-up and full body options.
The quality of captured audio is vastly improved thanks to four in-built microphones which help to cut out echo and background noise, meaning audio chat remains clear even in noisy environments.
PLAYSTATION Eye arrives later this year bundled with EyeCreate™, a software package for use with PS3 that lets you create your very own entertainment. Save and edit photos, video and audio clips direct to your PS3 and indulge your creative spirit by applying eye-catching visual effects or using one of the special capturing modes, including slow motion and time-lapse. Alternatively, use EyeCreate's editing suite to turn your media into professional looking movies.

Designed specifically for PS3 and featuring huge advances in USB camera and microphone technology, PLAYSTATION Eye is set to revolutionise the experience of online communication on the PLAYSTATION®Network. Expanding on the market-leading heritage of the EyeToy® USB Camera for PlayStation®2, the sophistication of the PLAYSTATION Eye naturally complements the advanced features and capabilities of PS3 - all in one slickly designed, unobtrusive unit.

Designed specifically to work with the next generation of social gaming titles and new services being developed for PS3, key features of the PLAYSTATION Eye include:

    • A sophisticated microphone with the ability to reduce background noise and focus on the spoken word for smoother, more accurate speech recognition and transfer
    • The ability to capture videos and audio clips directly to your PS3's hard disk drive
    • Engineered to perform well even in low-light conditions
    • A range of different capturing modes, including slow motion and time-lapse
    • Faster frame rate for improved tracking, responsiveness and smoothness
    • Two position zoom lens for close-up and full body options
    • A range of eye-catching visual effects to apply to photos and videos
    • Bundled with EyeCreate™ editing software, which allows users to save and edit photos, video and audio clips

David Reeves, President of Sony Computer Entertainment Europe said, "PLAYSTATION Eye is a great example of how we have moved forward so significantly with our technology. PLAYSTATION Eye has four times the resolution, twice the framerate and double the sensitivity of its predecessor EyeToy USB Camera. With the technology that we now have at our disposal we will be able to dramatically improve the communications experience enjoyed on PS3".

    EyeCreate software
EyeCreate editing software, bundled free with PLAYSTATION Eye allows you to save photos, video and audio clips to your PS3 hard disk drive and apply eye-catching visual effects to your images. Different capture modes like time-lapse and slow motion open up a world of possibilities to be explored further in EyeCreate's editing suite, where you can turn your media into professional looking movies.

    New microphone functions
An all-new four microphone array, incorporating multidirectional voice location tracking, enhanced echo cancelling and background noise suppression allows for clear audio chat in even the most noisy of environments, without the need to hold or wear a headset.

    Next-generation camera features
A frame rate of up to 120 frames per second allows for super-smooth video and sophisticated low-light operation means that the room doesn't have to be brightly lit for the camera to deliver crisp, perfectly exposed video. The adjustable zoom lens features a 56º field of view to capture head and shoulders action for close-in audio-visual chat, and a 75º field of view to capture the whole body for a fully physical gaming experience.

    Technical Specifications:
    • 4 channel audio input:16 bits/channel, 48kHz, SNR 90db
    • 56º to 75º Field of View zoom lens
    • 2.1 F-stop, 1% distortion, fixed focus (25cm to 8 at 75º FOV)
    • 640 x 480 at 60 frames/second
    • 320 x 240 at 120 frames/second
    • USB2 high-speed data transfer
    • Uncompressed video or optional JPEG compression

Playstation Eye Review από το Three Speech

One of the PlayStation 2’s key accessories, credited for opening the console up to a more mainstream audience, as well as opening up all sorts of gaming possibilities generally involving getting gamers off their sofas and waving their arms around, was the Eye Toy. Like many ground-breaking inventions, there was genius in its simplicity although a mere video/stills camera, clever software allowed it to supplant the traditional controller as an input mechanism. Now, its successor has arrived. Called the PlayStation Eye, it offers few surprises but, in keeping with the PlayStation 3 to which it is designed to be attached, it adds a whole next-gen level of sophistication.

A handsome and classily designed object, the first thing you notice about PlayStation Eye is what appears to be a large microphone running across its entire width. Concealed behind the grille are actually four microphones, which can do some pretty flashy things. Such as background noise cancellation handy if you’re in a hectic family room and you’re trying to voice-chat with someone over the PlayStation Network. It can even track the direction from whence your voice is coming.

Optically, PlayStation Eye is way better than its predecessor. It has been engineered to operate in low-light conditions sensibly, since sitting in darkened rooms, as we’re all aware, can be a great atmosphere-enhancer when we play games. It has two settings (Marked 1 and 2 you simply twist the lens) for normal and zoom, although focus is otherwise fixed. The idea being that you would zoom in to a head-and-shoulders view for intimate video-chat, and zoom out for full-body gameplay.

The PlayStation Eye’s final next-gen feature is an improved frame-rate for super-smooth video capture (and therefore more accurate tracking when it’s detecting your gestures and so on). In its normal, 640x480 resolution video-capture mode, it can operate at an already impressive 60 frames per second, but if its software downgrades the resolution to 320x240, it can operate at a whacking 120fps.

It can pump out uncompressed video or JPEG-encoded stills (fear not if you’re worried about your PS3’s hard disk getting clogged the PS3’s Cell processor is seriously good at the sort of number-crunching required to compress and decompress all forms of media). And it comes with software called EyeCreate, which lets you mess around extensively with any video, audio or stills that you save to your hard disk. As well as a library of mad visual effects, EyeCreate contains a pretty powerful editing program.

And the quality of the image is damn impressive

It's hidden right down at the bottom of the US PlayStation 3 update web site but it caught our attention:

"The [Test Camera] option under [Accessory Settings] has been changed to [Camera Device Settings]."

Mainly, because precariously perched on top of our Toshiba HDTV since last week there's been a PlayStation Eye cam - sadly unused, even though the lights come on when you power up the PS3 and it falls on the floor every time you touch the TV.

So here it is working! Even though it's just a 'test camera' option at the moment the small window it opens up on screen displays an image far superior to what we were used to with old EyeToy's grain-o-vision - we can't wait to see the quality in full screen. And yes, that is an option to choose 50Hz or 60Hz.

:giggle:

The incredible potential of PlayStation Eye

We're not usually ones for card-based videogames, but the technology used in The Eye of Judgement has itself grabbed our interest, and we've got videos to show you why.

Sony's card game uses the PlayStation Eye - the PS3 equivalent of the EyeToy - to track the placement of real game cards on a playing mat on your table. When you place the card down the PS3 reads the special coding on it and summons the corresponding monster on the screen.

We thought it a nice touch that it can identify the cards' facing direction and place the monster the right way - something that plays a fundamental part of the gameplay, as you can see in the gameplay video below, in which we take on the computer.

Yet, even though the game itself is a relatively static, grid-based card game, the tracking tech of this set-up gets even more impressive. The software actually has the ability to accurately track the movement of cards in real-time, and shift the on-screen 3D monster as though it were standing on the card itself.

This doesn't just include movement over a 2D plain, but full 3D motion tracking, meaning if you move the card close to the camera the PS3 makes the monster bigger as it gets closer to the screen. It even tracks the tilt of the card, so tipping it left or right rotates the monster on-screen (until you tilt that card too far and the Eye can't read it).

So in essence you're holding that monster in your hand and can manipulate it in full 3D. That's truly amazing stuff and, with that kind of tracking technology, Sony could come up with some truly amazing gameplay mechanics in future PS3 titles. Especially considering how well the camera can merge interactive in-game objects with real-life scenery.

You could have advanced puzzle games that use real-life manipulation of objects, or Sony could make marked cards that you place around your room so that the PS3 can detect surfaces and objects for, umm... some sort of physics-based game or something (we'll leave the creative ideas to developers).

Check out the video captioned 'EyeToy-ing around' to see the impressive camera tech at work as we use TEoJ's Card Profile mode to demonstrate it's tracking abilities. The game's intro cinematic is pretty nice too, so we threw a video of that in here for good measure. Dive in...

PlayStation Eye, A Little More Info…

As many of you probably know, PlayStation Eye is coming, so I wanted to share a little bit about what that means for all you video-bloggers, gamers and would-be-actors and directors out there.

While most of you know that PlayStation Eye is being bundled with The Eye of Judgment game, I also wanted to let you know it’ll be out on store shelves as a stand-alone product, too. PlayStation Eye has a lot of cool features and capabilities.

One question I’ve seen asked a lot is: “What makes PlayStation Eye different from its predecessor, the EyeToy camera?” Lots. For a start, PlayStation Eye was engineered from the onset to perform well in low-light conditions. It also has a 2-setting zoom lens (normal and wide angle) with fixed focus. What does that mean? Well, a lot less fussing around than previous cameras. PlayStation Eye gets a sharp, clear picture at 640 x 480 resolution at 60 frames per second (at 320 x 240 it looks even better at 120 fps)! It picks up image and motion in varying light conditions and doesn’t need your help to focus.
It also has a built-in 4-microphone array that allows you to enjoy online AV chat and in-game voice chat, in what we’re calling a “natural environment,” meaning, not awkwardly leaning toward your camera or speaking abnormally loud just so the mic picks up your voice. IMHO, this microphone really does do away with the need for a headset.

The PlayStation Eye does an excellent job of filtering out background noise for a clearer voice connection, but it also has twice the frame rate than most standard cameras (this is part of what sets it apart from any other webcam or camera for this generation of consoles), allowing for faster and more natural tracking, responsiveness and smoothness. I think if you take all of this into consideration, PlayStation Eye is an ideal camera for AV Chat on your PS3.

All of this sounds like a bunch of technical and marketing speak, I know, but the difference is clear when you plug it in; AV Chats are smooth, crisp, and from my experiences, better than what I’ve seen on any PC. And of course, on the PS3, you can use AV Chat with anyone on your friends list, anywhere in the world.

AV Chat is just the start for the PlayStation Eye. Along with some very cool, free content and fun activities available to Eye users via the PSN, keep your “eye” out (sorry, I couldn’t resist) for some upcoming games that integrate the Eye in really innovative ways. While games like Eye of Judgment use the camera to play the game itself, other upcoming games like SingStar (PS3) take advantage of the PlayStation Eye’s video capabilities so you can do things like make your own personalized music videos to share with family and friends online. Soon you’ll see some of our favorite bits of PlayStation Eye fun on the PSN, designed to turn your TV into an eye-popping piece of interactive art that no one can ignore… more on those at launch!

Lastly, a great value-add you may not all know about is the EyeCreate Software. This will be available for FREE download on the PlayStation Store (yes! free! come get it!) and allows you to save, edit and share your PlayStation Eye videos, photos and audio clips - all through your PS3. We’ll have more on EyeCreate later this week, including some really fun examples of how cool EyeCreate movies can be from the depths of our QA grotto.

PlayStation Eye will be available as a stand-alone product starting October 23, for $39.99 at all major retailers. I’m sure there will be some questions, so I’ll try to monitor the comments here and provide info where I can.

    EyeCreate in Action

What’s up PlayStation fans? I wanted to get the word out to all of you to check out EyeCreate, the new video capturing and editing application for the PlayStation 3. With EyeCreate you can capture darn near anything and make your own personalized videos, much like the examples I’ve included below. You can also add all sorts of cool effects, record your own sounds and export your video to the XMB. Some of the coolest features include the time-lapse capturing and the stop-motion functionality. If you want to show off your videos, you can drop your creation on a memory stick or USB drive and share it with other PS3 users. The increased resolution of the PSEye and the multi-array microphone combined with the huge storage capacity of the PS3, make the possibilities endless. And last but not least, EyeCreate will be available for FREE download on the PlayStation Store on October 23rd. To get an idea of what EyeCreate can do, check out these vids our team made.
