Final Fantasy X|X-2 HD Remaster: PS2 vs. PS3 comparison

The gloves are off – Square Enix has lifted the veil on Final Fantasy X HD and it’s simply stunning, but how does it compare to the classic PlayStation 2 release?
While previous rumors had made tell about a possible visual upgrade for the game, I don’t think anyone expected what we received today. A lot of hard work has gone into this release – something that clearly justifies the nearly two year absence since the game’s original announcement at TGS 2011. Visually, the dated PS2 character models have undergone a complete overhaul, low resolution textures redrawn, and even the CG videos have been reshot for modern TVs.
The Internet has already been fast at work too – swift to provide the inevitable comparison between the original and this beefed up PS3 remaster. Please note the PS2 version is running on an upscaled emulator, but you can clearly see this isn’t your average HD reproduction.

    PlayStation 3

Final Fantasy X|X-2 HD Remaster is due out sometime this year worldwide. Available on PS3 and PS Vita, both games will come fully loaded with their International content – once only available in Japan

FFX/X-2 HD Split For Vita, 70% Complete

With the recent announcement of Final Fantasy X and Final Fantasy X-2′s HD Remaster treatment, Square Enix will be bringing both games to the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita. Though the games will be on one Blu-ray for PS3, the company commented that the Vita’s cartridge size was a contributing factor in the decision to split them up for the Sony handheld. This comes via a new interview in Famitsu with producer Yoshinori Kitase and associate producer Hideki Imaizumi, out today.

Why is this? Well, the games themselves have remastered assets like character models (which include enemies) and environments, though those are usually less of a space hog than other elements. The cinematic sequences have been updated for an HD format, and as you can imagine, take up a considerably bigger file size since they are likely uncompressed. While not confirmed by Famitsu, remastered audio (lossless and uncompressed), also takes up a considerable amount of space.

If you’ve ever wondered why Final Fantasy XIII is three discs on Xbox 360, it’s largely due to the uncompressed cinematics and audio quality being a a bit too hefty for one DVD. (Blu-ray discs having more storage capacity.) Final Fantasy XIII-2 had cinematics that bookended the game as opposed to being liberally peppered throughout it’s length, so it comfortably fit on one disc.

Mr. Nomura, who is participating in the project, was quoted as saying: “Ok, let’s do it!” In regards to save data being shared between PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita, the team is currently researching the possibility of its inclusion.
Square Enix also confirmed that progress on Final Fantasy X HD has reached 70%.

Update: Final Fantasy World further translated that Tetsuya Nomura was talking with Final Fantasy Type-0 voice actors during the time of recording about their memories of Final Fantasy X as two games shared some voice actors like Mayuko Aoki (Yuna). It’s here, Famitsu says, that Square Enix got the ambition to do a HD remastering of the games.

This was all around 2011 when production on Final Fantasy XIII-2 was in full swing, so it took some extra time to shift the manpower to this project. Final Fantasy X producer Yoshinori Kitase said that since they’ve missed the 10th Anniversary of Final Fantasy X with this project, they’ll try to honor the 10th Anniversary of Final Fantasy X-2 by getting the game out this year.

Kitase also divulged that the team had difficulty taking the assets from the original game for the re-release, stating that one programmer was responsible for salvaging most of the data — but an outsourced team was called in to help on the project. The Visual Works team, specifically Kazuyuki Ikomori, was also called in to give the game’s cinematics a proper facelift for the HD generation.

Closing the interview, Kitase said he hopes that younger Final Fantasy and video game fans will be able to enjoy Final Fantasy X.

    Thanks: FFWorld

Retailer Reveals FFX/X-2 HD Int’l Content

Retailer Best Buy Canada recently put up a listing for Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD on its website and included some interesting details as to what’s included. Previously, Yoshinori Kitase hinted that the team would work hard to include all of the International content like “Last Mission” from Final Fantasy X-2 in the release, and it looks like that may be happening after all. Via the listing here:

“Contains content not previously released in North America, including the optional superboss “Penance,” the “Eternal Calm” video that bridges the gap between the two titles, the “Last Mission” dungeon with 20+ hours of battle and story, and bonus dresspheres and garment grids”
Also included will be the “Eternal Calm” trailer that was released with the International version of Final Fantasy X to tease a sequel; this video takes place after the conclusion of the first game. Extra content like Garment Grids and Dresspheres such as the Psychicer and Festivalgoer will be included from the International release.

Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD will release in Japan and abroad this year for PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita. The PS3 version will include both games on one Blu-ray while the Vita versions will be sold separately. With all of the International content included, it appears North American fans will be treated to the most definitive version of these two PlayStation 2 classics yet.

Update: Best Buy Canada has removed the information about Last Mission from their product listing. In this week’s Famitsu, a blurb about Last Mission states that it’s inclusion is not yet decided. You can view that here.

Final Fantasy X HD almost finished, FF X-2 HD more than halfway done

Despite initially being announced nearly two years ago, the remastered Final Fantasy X is nearing completion. Square Enix producer Yoshinori Kitase says Final Fantasy X HD is at 80% completion, while Final Fantasy X-2 HD is at 65% completion. Both games will release this year via physical disc on PS3 and sold separately on PS Vita.

Kitase would not comment on whether the Last Mission would be included with Final Fantasy X-2 HD in his Gamer interview. The Last Mission, included only in the Japanese "International Version" of Final Fantasy X-2, features content taking place after the game's original ending.

According to the latest GameStop ad dated for June 26 to July 2, there will be a limited edition for Final Fantasy X|X-2 HD Remaster. In the ad, it states "Pre-order to receive your free limited edition upgrade."

Square Enix has not announced a limited edition at this time, so we're not sure what the LE would contain. The ad points to the PS3 version of the game but contains no info about a limited edition. If the HD remaster is indeed getting some sort of special edition, expect to hear about it soon.

Square Enix has confirmed the nature of the new 30-minute episode that has been appended to the endigns of Final Fantasy X and Final Fantasy X-2 as part of their ongoing events at the popular Japan Expo over in Paris.

Giving those at the event a sneak preview of the new story chapter written by series scribe Kazushige Nojima, game producer Yoshinori Kitase revealed that the 30-minute addition will take the form of an audio play, recorded with both the English and Japanese cast of the game.

The short preview featured Tidus, again voiced in English by James Arnold Taylor, recalling some of the final events of FFX and FFX-2. He sets the stage - it's two years later, and he has been given an all-new life to walk alongside Yuna.

From here, a thirty minute story will unfold, as revealed a few days ago in this week's Japanese magazines.

We'll bring you more from Japan Expo as it happens, so be sure to keep an eye on the site! We're heading to Japan Expo to chat to Kitase and some other Final Fantasy big wigs tomorrow - so be sure to drop us a tweet on Twitter or a message in the comments if you have any burning questions!

Yoshinori Kitase confirmed at the Japan Expo in Paris that cross saving will be possible between PS3 & PS Vita.
