PS3 Price Cut Needed, Says Ubisoft CEO
Despite this, hints at PS3 exclusive title.

In a recent talk with business news outlet, Reuters, Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot had some choice words to say about Sony's faltering PS3. Guillemot believes that Sony's console -- which continues to sell under expectations -- needs a substantial price drop, and it needs it soon.

Speaking at Reuters Global Technology, Media and Telecoms Summit, Guillemot remarked, "For sure Sony will have a different market share... lower than before." The Ubisoft exec added, "They have to decrease the price quite significantly," but declined to expand on this statement any further.

Despite these low expectations for the machine, Guillemot hinted at an exclusive PS3 title being worked on for the console in Europe. Guillemot didn't reveal any other details on this project, but hopefully an announcement will pop up during the upcoming Ubidays press event in France.

First combi 50GB PS3 game and movie disc announced
Sony says it will release the worlds first 50GB PlayStation 3 game and Blu-ray movie disc. The film is John Woos celebrated action classic Hard Boiled and the game is the kinda-sequel Stranglehold, featuring a digital version of Hard Boileds star Chow Yun-Fat.
Released as a special combi set, the title will sell for 70 dollars when it ships this summer. According to SCEAs Riley Russell: The 50GB capacity of Blu-ray Disc allows PS3 content publishers to do things simply not possible on our competitors 9GB DVD-based systems. Thanks to the advanced technology found in the PS3, developers like Midway can truly realize their visions, bringing consumers even closer to the game.

Rumour: Pandemic At Work On New Batman Game

Sources close to the project allege that the videogame sequel to Batman Begins, known as The Dark Knight, is under development by Pandemic Studios. Private equity firm Elevation Partners, which forged an alliance between Pandemic and BioWare in 2005, has gained the rights to the project, say insiders, but Batman Begins backer Electronic Arts will likely still publish the forthcoming action effort.

Pandemic Studios has over the years created an impressive library of hits, including Full Spectrum Warrior, Star Wars: Battlefront, Mercenaries and Destroy All Humans! Pandemic has purportedly been designing a secret title known as "Project B" for some time, although IGN was unable to confirm if this is, in fact, its Batman game.

EA's Batman Begins, an action-stealth game that played like Splinter Cell for kids, released in 2005 to mediocre reviews. The title sold a combined 400,000 units or so on GameCube, PlayStation 2 and Xbox in its first six months.

We were unable to reach Pandemic Studios for further details. A representative for Electronic Arts had no comment. Calls placed to equity firm Elevated Partners were not returned in time for publish.

Readers should consider this a rumor until we can officially confirm or debunk it. We'll stay on the story and update when further information becomes available.

PS3 Video on Demand "This Calendar Year"
Sony UK Boss confirms PAL downloadable content plans.

Sony Computer Entertainment Europe president David Reeves has confirmed that video on-demand will be available via the PlayStation Network by the end of the year. Speaking at a PSN event in London recently, Reeves said that Sony will indeed be "offering video on demand", adding "I can't give you a time but it is not in the distant future, it will be within this calendar year."

According to Reeves, full-length movies, music and TV programmes will all be available for download, direct to both the PS3 and PSP, although he gave no indication of exactly what would be available at launch or indeed the pricing structure. Reeves added, "It will not be in all of our PAL territories but it will be in the major territories."

    1. Killzone & Socom PLAYABLE @ E3

GI: Youve got a lot playable games here, and you announced SOCOM today [ed: SOCOM: Confrontation]. Can we expect SOCOM playable at E3? Killzone at E3?

Dille: Yeah. I think all the stuff you can have playable at E3. And then the one weve been holding back on is Killzone, so its a good reason for you to come to E3, because well have some updates on that. By all means, you need to save something to keep people interested.

Users have downloaded six million pieces of content and have logged in 115 million times. Compared to Microsoft during the same six-month period after launch, the Xbox 360 had 500,000 users with either Gold or Silver memberships.

    4. Things that make you go ... Hmmm

Using US and Japanese sales data I present to you a graph of the first 24 weeks of life for the PS family of consoles (not PSP). As you can see the PS3 is clearly out pacing the PS1 and is slightly behind the pace of the PS2. Given the huge amount of buzz coming in the future months for the PS3 we'll update this chart for you and see where we are.

Yes...we could bother to compare against the other consoles...but why bother since the GAMECUBE would be out pacing the PS2 at this point and we know what happened there!

Sony talks God of War III

Surely, Sony Computer Entertainment would be mad not to bring its flagship gore-fest God of War to the PlayStation 3 - and if the latest hints are anything to go by the Santa Monica studio is at least considering it.

"There's definitely the enthusiasm of us wanting to do that, to make the God of War III," series director Cory Barlog told ShackNews, "but there's obviously no commitment to that right now."

Right, so officially they're not working on it but that doesn't stop him offering thoughts on what a third game in the series would feature.

"Put it this way. If we ever do get to make God of War III, it'll have connections to all the games, just like [God of War PSP] has direct links to [God of War] II. So if you go and you play this game, if you remember in II or you go back and play II, you'll see situations that are directly explained because of the PSP [version] and [this game] helps flesh out [the mythology] even more. All these games have a connection to each other."

    Advertisement:
If your memory goes as far back as 2005, you'll remember that magazine press reported a PS3 God of War instalment alongside the second PS2 version. Perhaps SCE will have something to say about it come E3 in July.

Devil May Cry 4 Delayed Until 2008

Bad news for Devil May Cry fans. The release date for Devil May Cry 4 has been pushed back into 2008. Signs that this might be the case arose on 1up's write up of Devil May Cry 4 - at the top of the page was the date 1/15/2008. Of course this was no confirmation, especially since Capcom have been providing playable demos to gaming websites and events alike. Yet these demos were on the game's original platform - the Playstation 3...

In Devil May Cry 4, players control the formidable Nero who comes to grips with his newly found power as his beliefs and allegiance are tested. Continuing the legacy of fast paced action synonymous with the series, Devil May Cry 4 pushes the envelope of excellence even further with the inclusion of a new combat system that incorporates NerosDevil Bringer. This new feature has players delivering overwhelming damage to enemies with non-stop combos, while gaining new power for Neros right arm.

With the advanced graphical capabilities of current systems, high definition visuals and intricate detail come to life as players explore new and exotic locales. Amazing visual effects and dynamic action coupled with a complex storyline, provides the very cool, slick and stylish attitude that only a Devil May Cry game can deliver.

So what of the delay? Confirmation comes from Eurogamer's time with Capcom:

"Surely the game must be out soon? Not so. Fans have a further nine months to wait until it finally emerges sometime in "Q1 2008", our Capcom rep regretfully informs us."

So there you have it Devil May Cry 4 won't be hitting store shelves until early 2008. The delay may well be because of the games new mulitplatform status, since Capcom also announced a simultaneous release on the PS3, Xbox360 and PC. Or it could be that Capcom are waiting for the PS3 user base to grow. Which ever reason, hopefully the wait will be appeased by Dante's and Nero's slick moves.

Quality of Current Console Games - PS3 Leads

Often you will hear from gamers from one console group or the other "Your system has no quality games". In the last 6 months this has been true for owners of PS3, we hear it all the time. SPG has set out to investigate these claims.

To attempt impartiality on this topic we have used the ratings of MetaCritic.com. MetaCritic is owned by C|net and only rates games where their exists a minimum of 5 reviews from known, quality review sites. MetaCritic then averages these scores out.

The above chart then dispays the percentage of reviewed games with scores over 80% and under 50% for each console.

    Reality Check Consoles (PS3/X360/PS2/Wii):

Of all current consoles the PS3 has the HIGHEST percentage of games rated over 80%.

Of all current consoles the X360 has the LOWEST percentage of games rated under 50%

The Wii has the LOWEST percentage of games over 80% and the MOST under 50% of any console.

    Reality Check Handhelds (PSP/DS):

The PSP has the HIGHEST percentage of games over 80% and the LOWEST percentage under 50%

    Conclusions:

Consumers are willing to forgo quality games to get a better price. Both the DS and Wii are providing the lowest cost of entry to video gaming but offering the least in terms of game quality vs other consoles

Resistance: Fall of Man Map Pack

GameSpy sneaks into Insomniac for an exclusive hands-on with Fall of Man's upcoming multiplayer map and get the details on the new patch! Since the PS3's inception in the US and Japan six months ago, Resistance: Fall of Man has been something of a rallying point for early console adopters. Considering that it managed to maintain a higher attachment rate to consoles than Madden 07, that's no small feat. Since then, the game has taken on something of a cult status.

    Insomniac to develop PSN title

In an interview with Sony's semi-official blog Three Speech, Insomniac Games answered many questions about their past, present, and future projects. Besides a lot of technical information on game engines, something quite definitive caught our eye.

When Three Speech asked if Insomniac had any plans to develop a PSN title, the answer came straight from Ted Price, the founder and current CEO of Insomniac:

    "Yes."

So there it is, a confirmed PSN title from Insomniac. Will it be an offshoot of one of their already established series (the return of Spyro)? Or will it be a completely original escapade?
