Sony Marketing launch video internet service for Japan

TOKYO — Sony subsid Sony Marketing will launch a vid service for Internet users on March 31, the company said Monday.Called branco, the service will offer free video content, including docus, dramas and toons, for subs to the broadband Internet services of NTT East and NTT West, the former telecoms covering Eastern and Western Japan. Users will need to download a special "branco player" app to view the content.
Branco will not be VOD. Instead, it will beam content over six channels on a fixed sked, like a regular broadcaster. The Amedora channel will be devoted to foreign dramas, Bandai Channel to toons, Discovery Channel to docus, VMC to music vids, Dramatic! Film to shorts, toons and feature pics, and Puchi TV to shorts, including toons and pop music vids.
A special "chat function" will enable users to share info and views.
Branco intends to increase both channels and content over time, while recouping costs with online ads, based on users' preferences. The goal for the first year of operation is one million registered users.

Heavenly Sword devs working on new multi-platform title

UK developer Ninja Theory has said that its working on an original IP for the 360/PS3, and is not working on a sequel to Heavenly Sword as had been rumored. Nina Kristensen, co-founder and chief developer at Ninja Theory, has said that they are "targeting a triple-A blockbuster" and are "considering opportunities in creating a CGI movie using the game engine alongside the game itself."

Blood Omen and Pandemonium rated by ESRB

The ESRB strikes again and we learn of another couple of PS1 games the should be heading to the PSN. When? Who knows. Could be tomorrow, could be never -- (hint: It's not tomorrow). As for the games themselves, we're totally stoked. Pandemonium! was an awesome game in its day, but Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain was even better. We at PS3 Fanboy are huge fans of the Legacy of Kain series and have very fond memories of Blood Omen.

Hopefully these games will grace the PSN Store soon, because America needs some more decent PS1 titles. People who missed out on Blood Omen should be required to download it. While it may not be the greatest entry of the Kain series (it came before Amy Hennig, of Uncharted fame, came on board and crafted the wonderful Soul Reaver storyline) it's still a narrative masterwork. We're looking forward to restoring the Pillars of Nosgoth to their former glory again sometime in, hopefully, the near future. Vae Victis!

    Why PSN beats XBLA

    18
Issue 13 of the free PlayStation 3 magazine, P3Zine, includes all the usual previews and reviews, but also has an editorial on how PSN is starting to show a different and more exciting trend to XBLA. Looking at the lists of the top 10 titles on both platforms, they comment "You could argue that it merely shows that Xbox Live Arcade appeals to a different audience to PSN, but thats missing the point. Sonys list is the one which will make heartening reading to small independent developers, proving that even those ideas that might seem relatively niche can have huge success at the right price. Seeing the superb Flow in pole position is particularly satisfying..." and go on to argue how Sony has managed to make a better platform for downloadable, casual games.

You can download the magazine here, or go straight to the page inside the magazine here. All you need is Adobe Reader 6+ installed. The mag is free.

    Don't expect in-game messaging in v2.20 PS3 firmware

None of us should expect in-game messaging in the upcoming PS3 firmware v2.20. A blog asked a SCEE rep, if the respective feature would make an appearance in the firmware and Sony blunty replied "No" and that if it was, then it would has been stated in the press release. However, we can all still look forward to the major upcoming feature of BD-LIVE options.

Capcom Gripes That PS3 Doesn't Support Betas

Seth Killian, a senior manager for the Capcom Community, says that the company would love to have a PS3 beta for Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix just like they do for Xbox 360.

The only problem, asserts Killian, is that Sony doesn't support beta programs for PlayStation 3.

"As for not having a beta program on PSN, it has already been stated that this is due to a technical issue with Sony. As in, they don't support such a program yet," he was quoted by Spong as saying.

However, major projects such as Home and Warhawk do have betas, so his statement is somewhat puzzling. We're guessing he must mean support for third parties at the moment.

"My totally uninformed, shaking-the-Magic-8-ball guess is that Sony will be running betas for big titles in a couple of months, just not in time for us to get Super Turbo’s beta rolling on PSN," predicts Capcom blogger Chris Kramer.

Sony PS3 firmware 2.16 found on PAL GT 5 Prologue?

The latest update from the underground Sony PlayStation 3 scene puts a mysteriously unreleased PS3 firmware into the spotlight. Firmware version 2.16, just one minor spot shy from the latest version of Sony's next generation console software, was allegedly found to exist in PAL versions of Polyphony Digital's Gran Turismo 5: Prologue.

This development came after the fact that many have pondered over the significance of firmware 2.17. It was said that 2.17 came with complementary network code for GT 5 Prologue, though tangible evidence wasn't provided at the time.

Previously, members of the underground have believed that the latest firmware version should have been version 2.15 after they had probed a debug leak of that firmware much earlier.

Speculation that version 2.16 may have been the prototype firmware to be best for GT 5 Prologue have risen, but then claim that Sony discovered holes that could be exploited and decided to update the software to 2.17.

In order to best analyze the code, the team at PS3Hax has released the full firmware package of version 2.16 and 2.17, which are targeted at budding and experienced PS3 hacking teams to experiment with. More updates as we get them.

Default Rockstar Working On New Max Payne For Xbox 360, PS3

Rockstar Working On New Max Payne For Xbox 360, PS3

Washington (dbTechno) - Sources are stating that Rockstar is currently working on a new Max Payne for release in 2009 on the Xbox 360 and PS3. This would likely launch alongside with the launch of the movie, which stars Mark Walhberg.

Take-Two had a conference call to investors yesterday, stating that once Rockstar finishes up on GTA IV, they are moving on to release a sequel to another big franchise for release in 2009.

Many have been speculating what exactly this sequel could be, with ideas pointing towards a new Bully, Manhunt, or something else.

It appears that the new franchise entry they are talking about will be a new Max Payne game.

Max Payne gained a lot of attention as a franchise, releasing originally on the PC and then on the PS2 and Xbox.

The game is already being made into a huge Hollywood movie, starring Mark Wahlberg, which will also release in 2009.

It appears that Rockstar is getting a new entry into the Max Payne series ready to coincide with the release of the movie, even though it will likely have a different story.

Yes, Europe, you pay too much for games. I feel your pain. If your purse-strings are pinched too tightly to allow for full-price gaming, though, you'll be interested to know that SCEE have announced some price-cuts for some of their older PS3 games. No mention of whether or not this constitutes the PS3 debut of the European "Platinum" range, but looking at the list of titles, I'd wager that's a "yes".

Eight titles will have their prices cut to 40 sometime soon (only date we have is "fall"). They are:

    - Resistance
    - Genji
    - F1
    - MotorStorm
    - Heavenly Sword
    - Lair
    - Folklore
    - Ridge Racer 7

    Possible Sonic Unleashed gameplay video

    [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VjxnhXs7Mqs"]YouTube - Sonic Unleashed Leaked Video[/ame]

There has been quite a lot of talk recently about leaked screenshots of Sonic Unleashed, a newly trademarked Sonic game possibly for the PS3 and Xbox 360. While the rumored leak was met with initial skepticism regarding the authenticity of the screenshots (probably due to early April fool's jitters), the high-res screens certainly looked real enough to cause debate and confusion. If those high quality pics weren't enough to convince non-believers, then perhaps this gameplay video from SEGA ON will do the trick.

In the video, we see Sonic race through a sandstone town and a jungle-like area. Both places have been seen previously in the leaked screens. As far as we can tell, the level design is looking good, and this might mean that we could be seeing a worthy current-gen Sonic game. That is, if it is real ... and most of all, coming to the PS3. We're crossing our fingers on both accounts.
