Rumor: SOCOM Confrontation bundle includes new Bluetooth headset

Posted Mar 11th 2008 11:00AM by Andrew Yoon
Filed under: Rumors, Peripherals, e-Distribution Games

A supposedly leaked PowerPoint presentation revealed a new official Bluetooth headset for PS3. Set to launch in July/August, the headset would retail for $50 individually. More exciting, however, is SOCOM Confrontation bundle that's mentioned: both the game and headset would hit retail for $60.

The design of this rumored headset is an improvement over the one offered with Warhawk. However, don't get your hopes up quite yet. When asked for comment, a SCEA representative told us that "we have currently made no announcements for a new PS3 headset so any information is

Hideo Kojima Working on New Title
Just in case you thought he wasn't.

Metal Gear Solid 4 will bring an end to the Solid Snake line of Metal Gear games. But, just in case you've heard rumors to the otherwise, it won't bring an end to series creator Hideo Kojima.

Speaking with Japan's Nikkei BP website, Konami president Fumiaki Tanaka revealed that Kojima is working on the concept for a new game outside of the Metal Gear universe. Pressed further on this mystery title, or possibly titles, Tanaka said that he couldn't reveal anything at this point and that a formal announcement won't be coming this year. Instead, we can probably look forward to hearing something after Kojima has written the new title's scenario, which won't happen until after MGS4 has been released and Metal Gear Online has been given a major push.

In other Metal Gear Solid 4 news, Tanaka revealed to the site that Konami expects sales to be similar to past titles. While the sales focus is on the European and North American markets, the company is aiming for sales of one million in Japan alone. Nikkei pointed out to Tanaka that the PS3 hardware has yet to hit the two million mark in Japan, to which Tanaka noted that many users are waiting for MGS4 to buy a PS3. He also feels that because a number of major PS3 titles from other companies will be released before MGS4, the system's userbase total will rise.

Outside of Metal Gear, Tanaka shared a few insights into Konami's development plans as a whole. The company will be releasing remakes of more classic titles and tapping into more classic franchises in the future. Although Tanaka wouldn't get into specifics, he did suggest that download services like Wii Ware could play a role in this effort.

Tanaka made mention of all the major platforms in his discussion with Nikkei, but one in particular got praise: the PS3. In previous interviews, Tanaka has shared his opinion that Sony's online platform for the PS3 fits well with Konami. That stance hasn't changed, he said, noting that the open nature of Sony's online platform, in contrast to the regulations placed on the Wii and Xbox 360 online systems, gives Konami a lot of freedom.

What Konami will do with that freedom is up in the air right now, though. With Metal Gear Online, set to be bundled with Metal Gear Solid 4, Tanaka admitted that the company is still in the trial stages regarding a business model.

Next-gen Mortal Kombat game coming this year

Midway boss reveals titles existence in conference call with investors

Fans of Mortal Kombat rejoice: Midway boss David Zucker has confirmed what many consumers expected – a new Mortal Kombat game is on the way this year.

Nothing is known of the game or its title, but a boxed version of the title is likely to arrive on next-gen formats Xbox 360 and PS3 for the first time.

    Zucker said:

“…our focus really is not so much on the number of games as it is on creating games that are going to breakthrough and doing a better job of that historically.

"Games like This Is Vegas and of course you got Mortal Kombat game this year and others that we think have potential to give us higher unit numbers.”

Firmware 2.17 Now Available For PS3

All has been quiet on the firmware update front as of late, and PS3 owners have been stuck on 2.10 for almost three months now since the last update happened around Christmas time. However, that all changed tonight as Sony have stealthily released firmware 2.17 upon the world, and it can now be downloaded if you have your PS3 set up online.

Unfortunately, the new firmware does not seem to be much to write home about, and very little in regards to brand new features seem to be included. There are not even any update notes included this time! Of course, small behind the scenes changes to make your PS3 run more smoothly, along with fixes for possible security flaws are in there as always so we should be happy about that.

In the future we will of course have more exciting updates, with the long awaited in-game XMB hopefully making an appearance during the course of this summer should everything go to plan. In fact, it is unlikly we will see any more big changes until the firmware hits the big 3.0.

Unreal Engine 4 Targeting Consoles, Not PCs. Part 3

Yeah, the Unreal Engine was once synonymous with cutting-edge PC graphics tech. Once. But in the future? With Unreal Engine 4.0? Well, it's going to be geared towards consoles, not the PC

We need more “Collectors Edition” games, not tin boxes.

"As I was browsing Gamestop today, I noticed a ton of Collectors Edition Xbox 360 games on their used shelf, which of course at Gamestop are all priced the same as the normal edition games, a good thing I suppose. My problem was that, there were loads of them; in some cases more than the standard edition of the game. Whats going on here? I thought Collectors Editions were for… well you know… collectors or at least people who love the game they are purchasing. All the CE games I saw on the shelves had a tin box, a bonus DVD with some crap on it, and at the very most they were supposed to come with a figure (which Gamestop used games of course did not)."
    ...

    ; collectors 20 Collectors. !

Brash continues consuming Sony partners: Factor 5 next

Posted Mar 13th 2008 10:30AM by Andrew Yoon
    Filed under: News

From the publishers of fine titles, such as Alvin and the Chipmunks, Jumper: Griffin's Story, and Saw: The Videogame comes yet another major game announcement. Yesterday, Brash Entertainment announced a deal with frequent Sony partner, Game Republic (Genji, Folklore) to make a game based on a "popular Hollywood film." Well, looks like another Sony partner is being swallowed up by the startup publisher. Factor 5, known to Sony fans for their notorious Lair will also be creating a title for Brash. We're sure that Factor 5 will live up Brash's legacy of quality titles.
"We do our due diligence on potential partners; we want to understand their in-house tech, and get to know their team and its capabilities. Factor 5 has a solid track record in creating licensed games that, in combination with their technology expertise, makes them an ideal partner," said Mitch Davis. "But what really cemented the collaboration was their passion for the IP and the world in which the game will live. Because that's when you are going to get really good games -- when the people who are making it are really enjoying the process."

"Typically, there are two issues developers have with making a licensed game. First, they tend to have shorter development cycles. Second, there are often very tight constraints on how you can portray the world of the IP, its characters and story. The resulting lack of creative freedom can be very frustrating -- especially when it's a world you are excited to explore," said Julian Eggebrecht, President and Co-founder of Factor 5. "But collaborating with Brash is much different, we're already working on a title that is more than two years out, and because the filmmaker is a game fan who is really excited about how we want to expand on the story of the film, we've been given a lot of latitude. It's been really fun to dig deep into this universe."

Sony's CEO Stinger: PS3 Press Conference this Month

On January 7th this year, Sony's CEO Sir Howard Stringer told a meeting at CES that:

"We will see if we can enter the battle against the software companies. This is probably the year we need to demonstrate that."

CNET's Michael Kanellos further reported Stringer's setting out "one of the first examples of this strategy", and that was "the expansion of the PlayStation Network".

Structural changes mean Kaz Hirai will head both SCEI and SOE

Posted Mar 13th 2008 2:30PM by Jem Alexander
    Filed under: Business
Sony is announcing today that structural changes will be occurring within the company, effectively merging the Sony Computer Entertainment and Sony Online Entertainment departments. (Sony Online Entertainment has been run by Sony Pictures.) While the two will remain largely separate Kaz Hirai, President of SCEI, will now be the head of both companies, with SOE President John Smedley reporting to him from April 1st onwards.

Both SOE and SCEI seem excited by the opportunities this brings, with Hirai stating that he is "excited to be able to work with SOE even more closely, as online games and services become a more integral part of the PS3 entertainment experience. This new structure will allow us to take full advantage of the extensive breadth of expertise of the two companies and increase our range of exciting entertainment offerings to our consumers." Smedley shares these sentiments, adding that he is "thrilled to become a part of the incredible team that has made PlayStation 3 the premier platform for next generation online gaming."

This all seems to make sense, considering how much energy SOE is putting into PS3 projects over the next frew years. We can't wait to finally starting seeing the fruits of their labor later this year.
