    Rumor: Crysis PS3? !

If you were a PC game which console would you make your way to — The Xbox 360 or the Playstation 3? Let us think about the recent course of events for a moment and examine the facts.
Could Crytek be following in the footsteps of Epic? There has been a job post on Cryteks official site looking for a PS3 developer for a few months now, however when asked about it Crytek declined to comment.
The job opening itself may be all the fuel Playstation 3 fans need, however we would like to add some more. Take into consideration the course of events that took place recently between Sony and Epic.

Sony has just made themselves very attractive to PC game developers by allowing mods and map building on their console, exactly the type of things that Microsoft would not.
If Sony is willing to extend the offer they made Epic to other developers (and we cant see why they wouldnt) then the “woosh” noise you hear in the distance may very well be the sound of developers lining up to sign on Sonys dotted line.
To those who say the PS3 is not capable of handling the requirements for the Crysis game, you may want to rethink your stance on the subject. We recently spoke to two Crytek representatives at this years E3, of which one mentioned that the game is still being worked on and their hopes are to not only continue to improve the overall experience, but to also find ways to lower the minimum spec requirements necessary to play the game.
In closing, while the game is meant for DirectX 10 and will run on DirectX 9, it seems that Crytek is still looking to refine the games requirements. This could prove to be a positive thing for PS3 owners.

Sony draws up Leipzig battle lines
    Stuart Dinsey Today, 10:22am

SCEE boss David Reeves says E3 was a phoney war

SCEE's president and CEO David Reeves has told MCV that E3 was a phoney war, and that Sony will let off the first of its peak season “fireworks” in Leipzig next month.

Talking exclusively to MCV, he intimated that a series of big announcements will be made at the Game Convention trade and consumer show in Germany – massively enhancing the appeal of both the PlayStation 3 and PSP.

“We prefer to make our big statements in Leipzig, it suits us much better,” Reeves told MCV. “Yes it has been a bit of a slow summer, but we feel that we have kept the momentum going.

“There will be absolute fireworks at peak, that I can promise you. We will be doing things no-one has seen yet for both PS3 and PSP.”

    PS3 surprises ready for Leipzig
    Stuart Dinsey Today, 10:46am

Video-on-demand, Freeview TV and price cut expected in UK pre-Christmas

MCV believes that SCEE is readying a number of significant announcements for next month's Leipzig Games Convention - with a possible European PS3 price-cut leading the way.

Whilst Sony has not confirmed its exact Leipzig plan, MCV believes that territories across Europe and other export markets could also be getting video-on-demand services and Freeview TV features this side of Christmas.

MCVs prediction follows comments from SCEE's president and CEO David Reeves in which he claimed that Sony will let off the first of its peak season “fireworks” in Leipzig next month.

Unreal Engine "not running well enough" to release yet

The PS3 version of Fatal Intertia has been delayed due to "difficulties" with the Unreal Engine's performance on the Sony hardware. The game was originally designed specifically for the system, yet is deemed to be "not running well enough" according to a Koei representative. The Xbox 360 version is to be released ahead of it, as delaying it further while the PS3 version is fixed wasn't deemed necessary

    Sony's Reeves Lobs Leipzig Bomb
The SCEE prez promises "fireworks" at next month's GCDC.

"We prefer to make our big statements in Leipzig, it suits us much better," Reeves reportedly told MCV, apparently intimating that E3 is small schnitzel in comparison. "There will be absolute fireworks at peak, that I can promise you. We will be doing things no-one has seen yet for both PS3 and PSP."

    Capcom Label PS3 "Sluggish"

In a belated translation of Capcom's Q&A following the company's latest financials, the Japanese publisher labelled PlayStation3 sales as "sluggish" and in a double-pronged attack claimed the "PSP hasn't achieved the numbers expected."

Perhaps a reminder of why the Japanese publisher has adopted a multi-format development policy regarding titles such as Resident Evil and Devil May Cry, it's worth noting that Capcom have created one of the most successful titles to appear on the PSP in the shape of the Monster Hunter series.

Sony wins top prize at Develop Awards

The European arm of software giant and PlayStation 3 maker Sony has picked up the main award at the Develop Industry Excellence Awards, which took place this evening at the Hilton Metropole hotel on the UK's south coast before a crowd of 500 games industry executives. SCEE picked up the Grand Prix award for "capping 12 months which have seen the firm deliver a new hardware format that has inspired developers around the world to make cutting-edge next generation games."

The Develop Awards are focused on UK and European companies and are judged by close to 100 industry experts. This year marked the fifth such show, and was held in conjunction with the currently underway Develop Conference.

Sony, which competes with Canon Inc. (7751.T: Quote, Profile, Research) in digital cameras and Microsoft Corp. (MSFT.O: Quote, Profile, Research) and Nintendo Co. Ltd. (7974.OS: Quote, Profile, Research) in video games, earned an operating profit of 99.32 billion yen ($825.6 million) in April-June, up from 27.05 billion yen a year earlier.

This is a turnaround from an operating loss of 113.4 billion yen in the previous three months, when Sony booked losses at its once high-flying game unit.

Sony's PlayStation 3 game console has lagged Nintendo's Wii in monthly sales since their launches late last year due to the PS3's high price and scarcity of strong software titles.

Sony kept unchanged its operating profit forecast of 440 billion yen for the year to March 2008. That is up sharply from 71.75 billion yen a year earlier, when the company was hit by hefty costs for launching the PS3, and compares with a consensus of 423.7 billion in a poll of 20 analysts by Reuters Estimates.

Rumors: New Bionic Commando, And Four RPGs From Level 5

The latest issue of Electronic Gaming Monthly's Quartermann rumor mill is coming with a fresh set of rumors to peruse. The juiciest hearsay is that Capcom's Bionic Commando, once rumored to be getting the remake treatment, is now being developed as a full-fledged installment for the PlayStation Network.

Dark Cloud developer Level 5, whose current PlayStation 3 project White Knight Story has been outside of the limelight since wowing us with footage from last year's Tokyo Game Show, is rumored to be announcing four new RPGs at this year's TGS in September. And they're not necessarily PS3 games, either

Sony Online to Reveal New Game at Fan Faire

Sony Online Entertainment announced today that they will unveil a new online game at their annual Fan Faire this weekend, which takes place at the Rio hotel on the Vegas strip. The game will then launch later in August.

Company president John Smedley -- who, in a vaguely disconcerting attempt to endear him to fans, is referred to as "Smed" in the press release -- will unveil the game to the over 1000 MMO fans in attendance during his opening remarks on Friday, August 3, at 5:30 PM PDT. Attendees will get the first chance to demo the game.

Since the game will launch just weeks after the unveiling, I imagine that it is some kind of downloadable PC title. But that's just me. Other products at the three-day fan festival will include Pirates of the Burning Sea, Gods and Heroes, and the latest Everquest expansion packs.

The Full Scoop: No Announcement for U.S. PlayStation 3 DVR

Sony and TiVo speak the same language regarding speculation around PS3 DVR

Sony Computer Entertainment America's PlayStation 3 offers a hot list of capabilities including Bluetooth controllers, Blu-ray movie playback, WiFi internet connectivity and hard drives capable of storing demos and movie trailers. Yet, trailers seem like child's play when compared to Xbox 360's full movie download rentals and the future use of TV over IP (IPTV) over the Xbox Live service.
SCEA hasn't said much about its intentions to get into video but a new head of marketing for SCE New Zealand recently said that digital video recorder (DVR) capabilities would soon be offered as the country gains Freeview terrestrial digital broadcast channels.

Just yesterday, we talked to SCEA's Dave Karraker about the agreement that Sony Electronics, Inc. has with TiVo. Back in 2001, Sony and TiVo signed an agreement that would allow Sony to feature TiVo software. While Sony has offered standalone TiVo (SVR 2000 & 3000) machines along with a DirecTiVo (T60) receiver, Sony hasn't made much use of the agreement.

Considering that the original contract is scheduled to end in October 2008, there's still time. With TiVo's growing list of patents and U.S.-based user base, which should grow as a TiVo-enabled Comcast digital receiver releases, adding DVR capabilities via a unit that would decode channels through the CableCard interface seems theoretically possible.

Sony has tried its hand at DVRs in Japan at the end of 2003 with the PlayStation 2-based unit known as the PSX. The 160 to 250 GB units introduced what was to become the PlayStation 3's XMB (Cross Media Bar). Sales data regarding that unit's success (or lack thereof) isn't readily available, but a history of price drops after its original $950 MSRP suggest it failed to gain a large audience in Japan.

Given that the PlayStation 3 now supports the more HD-friendly H.264/MPEG4 video format versus the PSX's MPEG2 standard format, it would seem as if Sony was gradually building features that resemble DVR functionality.

Karraker, again reiterated his comment from the day before, "We [SCEA] have no announcement regarding DVR capabilities for the PS3 in North America at this time."

A representative for TiVo replied to GameDaily's query with a friendly "no comment."

As more information comes to light and we force PR people to start statements with something other than "no," we'll pass that along.
