PS3 Games Using Only 30% of System's Power?

According to the folks at Naughty Dog, it's estimated that Uncharted only taps about 30 to 40 percent of the PS3's total power. If true, that's mighty impressive...

For the last year or so, games on Microsoft's Xbox 360 and Sony's PlayStation 3 have looked fairly comparable in terms of graphics. Sony and certain developers would argue that the PS3 is definitely a far more powerful machine than the 360, capable of producing visuals that easily outpace those generated on the 360, but others would make the case for the 360's development environment.

Naughty Dog, the studio behind one of the PS3's best looking titles to date, Uncharted, is obviously in the former camp. What's interesting, however, is that Naughty Dog believes it's only begun to scratch the surface of what the PS3 is truly capable of. Speaking to "semi-official" Sony blog Three Speech, Richard Lemarchand, Co-Lead Game Designer at Naughty Dog, commented: "...part of the skill of developing for the PlayStation 3 is getting the GPU to farm jobs out to the six SPUs – seeing which SPUs are idling and can take up some of the slack in a frame-to-frame kind of way. That's why we think we're probably only using 30 or 40 per cent of the power of the PS3 right now, and there's this great, untapped potential. All third-party developers can get the Edge libraries for free and are going to be able to use them in their own ways, to get more and more and more out of the PS3 over the years."
If games like Uncharted look stunningly good at 30 to 40 percent, imagine how beautiful they'll appear as developers come closer to using 100 percent of the PS3's power.
In other parts of the interview, Lemarchand talks about Uncharted's retro-fitted support of the new PS3 trophy system and he also reveals that "we're quite a way into our next production cycle now," but it's unclear if that next project is a sequel to Uncharted since the game's not yet been announced.

Daily video blog Rocketboom coming to PS3, PSP
Daily video blog Rocketboom has handed over its distribution and ad sales to Sony Pictures in return for a seven figue guarantee plus a share of the revenues. Rocketboom will be distributed on Crackle as well as other Sony platforms including PS3, PSP and Bravia I-Link TVs.

Rumor: MS paid fo Final Fantasy XIII PS3 exclusivity breach
Internet rumors are suggesting that contained within an upcoming Famitsu edition is news that MS paid Square Enix big bucks in order to breach their Final Fantasy PS3 exclusivity deal. However, scans have reportedly surfaced and the source can not back-up these sightings...

There's apparently a big feature article in the upcoming issue of Japanese gaming mag Famitsu that talks Square Enix, Final Fantasy XIII and all that jazz. While scans haven't hit the internet yet, we've heard from several trusted insiders who have seen the yet-unreleased issue. It mentions that FFXIII is going to be out in Japan by next summer and in Europe/USA on both the Xbox 360 and the PS3 by the end of 2009 — which pretty much what we already know.

Here's the juicy bit: According to the Famitsu piece, Microsoft is footing the bill for Square Enix's FFXIII breach of PS3 exclusivity contract. No idea how much money that entails or the exact deal Microsoft worked out with Square Enix, but the fact there is not Xbox 360 version announced for Japan is telling. Square Enix does state how porting the game to the Xbox 360 should be easy.

More interesting tidbits: It's apparently hard to tell which looks better: Star Ocean 4 or Final Fantasy XIII. Also, the company plans to focus more on PSP game development from now on. File this as rumor until proper scans surface.

To πρωί εγώ στο kotaku το διάβασα... Κρίμα που δν την έχω ακόμα σε κάποιο tab να βγάλω screenshot.. Πάντως γιατί έγινε τόσος ντόρος? Δεν ήταν βέβαιο αυτό? Εγώ το έχω δηλώσει ότι η MS με τον πόλεμο που κάνει κάνει κακό στη βιομηχανία... Τα αποτελέσματα αυτού θα ρθουνε αργά ή γρήγορα... Και τότε....

Οι δηλώσεις του στελέχους έγιναν στο πλαίσιο μιας δημοσίευσης στο blog ThreeSpeech, όπου και μίλησε για ένα νέο σετ προγραμματιστικών εργαλείων με την ονομασία Edge που θα επιτρέπει στις ομάδες ανάπτυξης να αξιοποιούν καλύτερα από εδώ και στο εξής τους mini-επεξεργαστές του συστήματος της Sony. To πρωί εγώ στο kotaku το διάβασα... Κρίμα που δν την έχω ακόμα σε κάποιο tab να βγάλω screenshot.. Πάντως γιατί έγινε τόσος ντόρος? Δεν ήταν βέβαιο αυτό? Εγώ το έχω δηλώσει ότι η MS με τον πόλεμο που κάνει κάνει κακό στη βιομηχανία... Τα αποτελέσματα αυτού θα ρθουνε αργά ή γρήγορα... Και τότε....

Εντάξει,πόλεμος γίνεται παντού και σε όλες τις αγορές.Παντού πληρώνουν για να έχουν αποκλειστικά προϊόντα/υπηρεσίες.Όπως κάνουν όλες οι αθλητικές ομάδες,όλες οι βαριές βιομηχανίες (με τους top επιστήμονες) ακόμα και στα..."σκυλάδικα".
Εαν τελικά βγει αληθινό (που δεν το νομίζω) δεν βλέπω να γίνεται κανένα κακό στην gaming βιομηχανία παρα μόνο στην sony.

Όσο για το άλλο με τη Microsoft, δεν νομίζω ότι είναι καν rumour. Είναι αυτονόητο ότι η έκδοση PS3 περιμένει μόνο και μόνο για να μην είναι timed exclusive στο PS3 το παιχνίδι. Φανταστείτε αν το GTA4 έκανε τις ίδιες πωλήσεις αν έβγαινε πρώτα σε μια κονσόλα μόνο. Στη δεύτερη κονσόλα το anti-hype που παρατηρήθηκε θα έκανε μεγάλο κακό. Και το ίδιο θα γινόταν και με το FF13.

New Godfather II details surface

Electronic Arts has unveiled new details on its upcoming videogame adaptation of The Godfather II, due for release in early 2009.

According to reports, the sequel will include a total of six playable classes: Bruiser, Demolitions Expert, Arsonist, Medic, Safe Cracker and Engineer. Furthermore, each has their own unique background and can pick one of 12 different personalities.

Conceptually, the game will function in the sandbox mould with RPG and RTS elements spliced throughout, and will include third-person, street level sequences, which can zoom out to a strategic map of the surrounding boroughs. Know as "Don's View", this feature allows players to keep tabs on the competition, plan out heists and manage your resources.

Lastly, EA also confirmed that the game would feature various perks; namely, rewards for stealing various property of rival gangs. An example of this includes stealing a factory, which may reward your family with a new vehicle and additional weaponry.

EA: Madden 09 on PS3 is same as Xbox 360 but we prefer it

We know many of you were upset when you played Madden 08 on the PS3. It certainly had its issues, but don't let that put you off Madden 09. The Orlando Sentinel's Matthew Simantov spoke to the Senior Producer of the game, Phil Frazier, who told him that Madden NFL 09 will be identical on the PS3 and the 360. Not only that, but the QA team actually prefer playing on the PS3 version. The game comes out in under a week, but the demo is already on the PSN Store. From the sound of things, EA has learned from their previous mistakes. Is this enough to win back those of you who swore yourselves off the franchise after Madden 08?

New Ratchet And Clank In 2009?

Ratchet & Clank: Quest For Booty looks awesome, but let’s not forget, it’s an expansion to Ratchet & Clank Future: Tools Of Destruction instead of an entirely new game. A translated version of a news report at www.gamer.nl tells us certain members of the press have finished the upcoming Network expansion for review, and at the end, and at the end it says there will be a brand new Ratchet & Clank game in autumn of 2009.

We can only hope, but for now we look forward to the aforementioned Quest For Booty and Resistance 2 from Insomniac!
