ICO and Siren creators speaking at Nordic conference

With all the excitement going on with PlayStation Day in Europe, we're going to turn your attention to another conference coming up soon. The Nordic Game 2008 conference. It's a little more technical of a conference, but it's still got some great developers giving speeches. Sony's own Fumito Ueda, creator of ICO and Shadow of the Colossus will be taking part in the "Game Creation and Technology" program. This program focuses on new game niches and continuing to innovate creatively.

Other celebrated panelists in the discussion include the creator of Silent Hill and Siren, Keiichiro Toyama, Rock Band's Roby Kay and Ninja Theory co-founder, Tameem Antoniades. We don't really expect any announcements out of these folk, but they might bring something new to the table when giving their presentation. Like whatever direction Ueda is taking with his third game. We'll keep you posted.

The new game will let you pit legendary heavyweights Muhammad Ali and Mike Tyson against each other. The game also features an all-new physics-based animation system that recreates the full spectrum of true-to-life punch impacts, giving boxers a devastating arsenal of punches, blocks and ring movement. The new physics system allows for missed punches, glancing punches, knockout blows and for the first time ever, rough and tumble inside fighting. Fatigue, adrenaline, footwork and timing all come into play as you hammer away at your opponents.

Pandemic conquers Middle-earth with new LOTR title

Pandemic Studios is spearheading a new Middle-earth based game entitled: The Lord of the Rings: Conquest. The team behind the Star Wars Battlefront and Battlefront II titles is tasked to breathe life into the Tolkien fantasy world with this new action game. Can they do it? Josh Resnick, co-founder and general manager of Pandemic Studios thinks so: "Our experience creating massive, rich, action-packed games means that The Lord of the Rings: Conquest will give fans exactly what they want: full control of the blade, bow, and magic to fight its epic battles any way they want -- even if they choose to play from the evil side."

Interesting PR-laced point there Mr. Resnick. We're sure intrigued about the "evil side" gameplay, though; the ability to play as an Oliphaunt, the Balrog, and Sauron do sound rather wicked (in a good way). Interested in more? Then check out the game's official website. The game is due for a global Fall 2008 release.

Now in her eighth year of gaming writing, and already a respected name in the computer and console game industry, gaming doyenne Vanessa Morgan has taken up the coveted role of Editor of one of the biggest and most popular gaming magazines in Australia and New Zealand, Official PlayStation® Magazine.

We had a chat to Vanessa about what it's like to be the first female Editor of Official PlayStation® Magazine, what the coolest part of her job is, what her favourite games are and where she sees the future of PLAYSTATION®3.

    ......

    15. What are the top 5 PLAYSTATION®3 games you're most excited about?

    1. LittleBigPlanet
    2 Motorstorm 2
    3. MGS4
    4. An unannounced title coming to PS3 for the first time
    5. Another unannounced title coming to PS3 that'll BLOW you away

Sorry, not meaning to rub it in but OMG! The titles are BIG and so were the forms I've had to sign about not releasing any info until after the embargo dates pass BUT all will be revealed in the next two issues of the mag. We've had to fly to London, Paris, San Fran, Vegas and LA to nab this info. We're tired and our eyes are square.

    , thread. delete.

Hideo Kojima takes a complete 180 in relation to his recent comments about being unsatisfied with Metal Gear Solid 4 and has reiterated his statements in new fashion. Below is the interview quotes given by Kojima and how he truly feels about the hardware he’s been developing for.

"On the internet, there's stuff saying "Hideo Kojima" isn't satisfied with the PS3. I'd like to talk about that today. I just got back from Paris and did 15 interviews and everyone asked me about it, did I say that. The meaning of what I said has totally been changed, made totally different. Today, I'd like to talk about that. Why did it turn into that? When I'm doing an interview, I answer in Japanese, and I can't control how the writer will interpret that into English... What I say is then translated in English, and the writer then changes that into their own words and writes that. So, right there, the meaning of what I say changes a lot."

He continued on throughout the interview taking unexpected shots at the personalities of Americans in a generalized statement.

"I am Japanese, so I try to be modest. I'm especially modest person. I dont wish to brag about it to say "I am the amazing Metal Gear guy" or to say "This is the best one", just like how Americans brag stuff like this... That's why i interview in Japanese, and Mr. Sai (translator) translates my side of the inteviews very well in English. Westerners do not have a tradition of modesty. And so, the statements are translated correctly, but the original meaning is totally different. And those statements are on a totally different website and the meaning totally changes."
"Regarding my recent comment about my disappointment with MGS4, the comments derived from the article "MGS4, Inside The Biggest PS3 Game" to the post "Hideo Disappointed with MGS4." It's become totally different. This was in English, and here's where it gets strange. Japanese readers then translated that in Japanese and put it on their websites, writing things like "Oh, the PS3 is dead." Then that spread through the internet and now people are writing things like "Hideo Kojima Is Making MGS4 on the PS3." This is no good... It's funny how others think "Did Hideo really say that?" then ask me, and my answer is obviously "No" but then... I guess I am responsible for all of the articles...

Now I'm going to say what I really wanted to say, and this is what I told those 15 reporters:
Let's say this developer is making hardware, in this case a game, and that hardware is at the level of a car. And when looking at the specs, the developer claims the car is able to fly. Now there is no stopping when you say, "This is a car that can fly." When you claim that it can fly, the speculation grows from "oh so it can FLY?!!!" And the developer would set his goals higher. The specualtion is that if the car flies, then it should reach a MACH speed...but it doesnt stop there...it'd go beyond the specualtion of then "it should go into space!" with all the excitement around, and the developer would go deeply into making the car going into space... however, he'll come up to the public and say the car reaches the MACH speed, but it fails to go into the space. But he shouldn't give up, because for a car to even reach a mach speed and go into air is revolutionary. I wished to convey my thoughts like that, but I guess it didn't work very well.

Recently I've been thinking about not giving interviews. That's not my job. My job is making games... The next time I interview in America, I will just say "MGS4 is the best, the end." It's not cool for a Japanese to speak so blatantly, and I don't want to say that. But if I don't, things like this [above] can happen... If you look at MGS4, I think you'll understand... MGS4 isn't exactly my property, so I don't have a total control over it and sometimes I get confused with it. Some may be disappointed the way I say things, but I do release the game with confidence. In fact that what I have been doing, not just this PS3 game, but my previous PS2 titles. I always reached for the higher goal and I try to go for it... Things like this often happen with Japanese newspapers. Where they take only the choice quotes. They don't change what you say, but the meaning's different, and the meaning changes. I'm always careful while giving interviews. Even in my company, im learning a lot about media training, but I wanted to do more than just that and here i am with the interview, but if things like above keep happening, I won't do anymore interviews. I don't get paid for these interviews at all. [jokingly] I won't do them anymore! I've decided! I'll stop doing my podcast! Like that."

Sony confirms November for Home open beta
Ron Festejo, Homes creative director, has confirmed that Home will enter its open beta phase in November this year.
“Home is currently in a closed beta phase,” he said, speaking at last weeks SCEE PlayStation Day in London. “We have between 8,000 and 10,000 users in this closed beta phase. Around July were going to be expanding on the closed beta phase and allowing more people to gradually come in, and then in November this year well be going to the open beta.”
He added: “The extension to the closed beta allows us to have more conversations with our community. Were very much in close conversations with them. A lot of the changes weve done have been the result of feedback. Weve asked the community a lot of questions, theyve given us a lot of feedback as to what they think needs improving, and were doing that, so its managing expectations.”
Theres more in this Eurogamer TV report, mainly about game-launching in Home, how to set up sessions, and so on. Take a look.

    Uncharted
    http://news.filefront.com/rumor-unch...ent-from-sony/
RUMOR: Uncharted Movie in the Works - No Comment from Sony

A “source” has stated that a movie adaptation of Uncharted: Drakes Fortune is currently being written. Being such a well received game it is not too surprising that Hollyweird might want to try and cash in on the popularity of it - but with the track record of videogame/movie tie-ins and movies based on popular video games usually being a pile of steamy horse manure - it makes me wonder how they are going to screw this one up -providing that this information is actually true and not just some silly rumor.
Supposedly though, this “well-placed source” has confirmed that the film rights to Naughty Dogs game has been snatched up by Atlas Entertainment (Fallen, Three Kings), and when asked about the possibility of a movie starring Nathan Drake, Sony had no comment. Usually when “no comment” is given as an answer you can usually bet your aunties great big panties that what they really meant was “yes” but that they do not want to ruin the horrible surprise.
If this is indeed true, who do you think should play Nathan Drake? 1Up thinks it should be Hal Sparks, and if you do not agree with them then you are a monster. Well, call me a monster all you like, but I think that Josh Holloway (Sawyer) from Lost would make a great Nathan Drake. Yeah, sure he is blond, and sometimes resembles Kid Rock, but he could pull it off. He is smarmy enough, handsome enough, and could easily get away with the half-tuck any day of the week. Of course, I am sure I am in the minority on that suggestion.

Rumor: PlayStation trophies to hit in June
According to our PS3forum industry insider, Sony will be releasing Firmware 2.4 sometime in June around the launch of Metal Gear Solid 4. Also mentioned is that the new Firmware 2.4 will include some of the first PlayStation Trophies. *Note that these will be the 2D trophies found on the XMB and not the 3D trophies coming in Home later this year.

"The SDK 2.40 will be available to dev. late in June. The actual Firmware 2.40 might see the light of day a lot sooner (my personal guess would be launch aligned or slightly before MGS4 )." - PS3Forum Insider

Further into the thread, they state that the Firmware 2.4 will also include improved Audio/Video communication, however don't get your hopes up that this is for in-game XMB. As developers will receive their 2.4 debug units in June, expect that only first party Sony titles to have trophies first.

Now that Metal Gear Solid 4 is in the can, what's next for Hideo Kojima? That's that rumored Snatcher remake with No More Heroes creator Suda51. Anything else? Says Kojima:
I would like to say that Zone of the Enders is quite near the priority list… [after MGS4] it might be good to change to outer space or robots or things like that for a change.

Sony Computer Entertainment has added support for the YouTube API to the PS3 SDK.

According to Japanese website ITmedia, the experiment is being supported globally and is designed to let developers easily integrate YouTube uploading into games made for the system
