Rumor Return: Resident Evil 5 A PS3 Exclusive?

Rumors regarding potential PS3 exclusives are flying this week, as we learned that Konami is currently planning to release Silent Hill 5 only on Sony's platform, provided console sales increase. Now, another game is on the radar for PS3 exclusivity: Resident Evil 5.

Actually, this isn't a new rumor, but once again, a variety of Japanese media outlets have reported the 360 version of the game - initially planned by Capcom - has been dropped. There is no concrete evidence or quotes to be found, but in the past, Capcom has denied any such thing. They're still releasing the anticipated survival/horror title for both the PS3 and Xbox 360, but for whatever reason, numerous Japanese sources want to say otherwise.

From our viewpoint, it actually makes a lot more sense to see Silent Hill 5 exclusive to the PS3; after all, the last two installments were exclusive to the PS2. Furthermore, Capcom has already enjoyed great success with 360 exclusives (Dead Rising and Lost Planet), so it seems rather unlikely they'd ignore Microsoft's platform when they release their biggest game of the new generation. But that's just our opinion; we'll keep you apprised of any new developments on the RE 5 front.

Next-gen console sales healthy at HMV

    PS3 meeting expectations

The PS3 is said to be exceeding sales targets, although the retailer expects a performance boost when Sony opts to lower the price.

"Sales remain in line with expectations, occasionally even exceeding them," commented Tim Ellis, head of games for the entertainment specialist.

"We're looking forward to further games releases, and when the time's right, a suitable price revision to take the console to its next level of sales."

Killzone 2 Dev Hypes PS3 Killer App

The level of anticipation on Killzone 2 in development by Guerrilla Games for the PS3 is as high as ever.

The PS3 is in dire need of a killer app, that is a fact that absolutely nobody can deny. Test Lead and QA Manager Sebastian Downie stated that he realizes the pressure which Guerrilla Games is currently under. E3 is quickly approaching and Killzone 2 is supposed to be the killer app to go head to head with Halo 3 and save the PS3.

He did state in the interview though that he is confident that critics will be shut up when they actually get their eyes on Killzone 2.

"I am sure there are a hundred developers around the globe feeling the same way right now though. Everyone wants their game to play look and sound perfectly when the public first get to see it. If you are working on an AAA Next Gen beast of a game or something for mobile phones you want to make a good impression on people. And if you have the baggage that we have we have to give it that extra little bit. Hopefully it will all go brilliantly and well shut up even some of the most ardent critics."

In the interview there were no firm details on the game but he did state that it would have an online mode and that there will be a Pubilc Beta coming at some point this year.

He stated that most of the information is being held until E3 when a lot more will be revealed. Could we be looking at a beta test for Killzone 2 before the holiday season? It sure is looking like it and if what he says is true, critics may have to shut their traps and get ready to be blown away by Killzone 2!

    Parappa 3 Confirmed for PS3

No, it's not going to end up on the PSP. Parappa the Rapper 3 is going to be a PS3 title.

And thank God, because that was a deal breaker for me–no PR3, no PS3 for Andrew.

I actually loved the original. For some reason, I was the only one of my friends to actually be able to beat the game, or at least get through a majority of the levels.
It was so cheesy and delicious that you couldn't help but put it on your pizza and eat it with pepperoni.

Wait, no, I just haven't had dinner.

Cartoon Network New Media Unveils Innovative Browser Application Extending Games Distribution to Gaming Consoles

“MEGA Series” Developed with the AFI Digital Content Lab

ATLANTA--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Cartoon Network New Media is expanding its games distribution to videogame consoles through an innovative browser application developed at AFIs Digital Content Lab. Launching in late 2007 to early 2008, the new multi-platform window called “MEGA Series” delivers an interactive video and gaming experience to broadband-enabled consoles. Additionally, the application can be adapted for distribution to a broad array of devices. Cartoon Network is the first television network to use Flash to uniquely reach the massive console audience.

Compatible with PLAYSTATION 3 (PS3) and Wii, MEGA Series may be delivered via the broadband connection of each console and is accessible through the devices Internet browser, which both use custom Flash players from Adobe. MEGA Series programming will be based on Cartoon Network and Adult Swim shows. MEGA Series content is designed to be played simultaneously with streaming video and delivered episodically over time, providing a real-time immersive experience for fans.

“Developing applications like MEGA Series is an important complement to our existing online and mobile businesses and a part of Cartoon Networks digital growth strategy,” said Paul Condolora, senior vice president and general manager of Cartoon Network New Media. “Not only does MEGA Series extend our reach, but more importantly provides an opportunity to offer a unique content and user experience for our audience.”

“AFIs Digital Lab provided a fantastic collaborative environment to explore cutting-edge technologies that further our businesses and reach new audiences,” said Ross Cox, senior director of entertainment products, Cartoon Network New Media. “Wed like to think our efforts effectively demonstrate how the console browser can be utilized as a new distribution platform.”

“The MEGA Series breakthrough is exactly the type of innovation that the AFI Digital Content Lab has fostered for the last nine years,” said Lisa Osborne, supervising producer of the AFI Digital Content Lab. “When we recruited Sony, Georgia Tech, Dreamsocket, Beyond Z, The Barbarian Group and others to be on the same R&D team, we were hoping they'd develop a cutting-edge entertainment concept, and they certainly surpassed our expectations. Creating a product that runs on both a PS3 and a PC truly fulfilled the 'build once, broadcast everywhere' goal that the team set out to accomplish. It's gratifying to see Cartoon Network use their Lab project as a springboard to launch a new product.”

“The AFI Digital Content Lab encourages the type of creative thinking and collaboration that is imperative to help propel Flash development in the future,” said Bill Perry, manager of developer relations for mobile and devices at Adobe. “The development of the MEGA Series application is a great example of pushing technology to create even more robust entertainment experiences that reach consumers across a wide range of supported devices, including the Sony PS3 and Nintendos Wii console.”

The MEGA Series is a custom application accessible through a console browser and a PC browser. Once the application is built, the interface will be customized for the Flash capabilities of each distribution platform—including PC, PS3 or mobile phone—creating a unique, video-on-demand and gaming experience.

HIALEAH, Fla. -- A teenager with a brown belt in karate used a samurai sword to scare off a burglar who was after his PlayStation 3 video game console.

Last Friday afternoon, Damian Fernandez and his 15-year-old sister, Deanne Fernandez, were home alone at their northwest Miami-Dade County home while their parents were at work when they heard knocking on the front door. Moments later, two men were prying the front door unlocked, prompting Deanne to hide in her closet.

"I was so scared," she said.

As her brother slept in the next room, the burglars ransacked their parents' room, taking some jewelry before moving on to what they were really after -- a PlayStation 3.

According to a police report, one of the burglars kicked in Deanne's bedroom door. She said she could see his foot through the closet panels.

The burglar found the empty PlayStation 3 box and ran out of the room, but Damian was waiting for him.

"Once I saw him take off running back, I jumped off my (bunk) bed and I grabbed my sword … and I just waited for him," he said.

Damian said he lunged at him with his samurai sword, striking him in the chest.

    "He freaked out," Damian said.

The burglar ran out of the house with Damian chasing him down the road. When police arrived, a K-9 officer located the burglar hiding behind a neighbor's palm tree. The second burglar got away.

Javier Cotera, 21, was arrested and released early the next morning on bond.

Local 10 attempted to contact Cotera at his Hialeah home, but his family said he wasn't there and that they didn't know anything about it.

Damian and Deanne's father, Delio Fernandez, said he is concerned Cotera is out of jail.

"If he would have had a gun, I could have lost one of my children," he said.

Cotera is scheduled to appear in court in two weeks to face three felony charges.

And from Engadget, who also had a piece on the story:

    Quote:
You don't tug on Superman's cape, you don't spit into the wind, and you definitely don't try to jack a samurai sword-wielding gamer.

10 things to love about the PlayStation 3

I've been rather outspoken about the PS3 in the past. I have criticised its high price, I've called it ugly and to be honest I've given Sony's new baby a bit of a rough time. Have you ever called someone else's baby 'ugly' behind their back only to find out that actually it's quite cute after all?

That's the sort of the guilt I'm feeling right now, because after having a play with one for a week I've actually changed my mind about the PS3. It's actually..ahemm... rather good. Sure there are not a massive number of excellent games out for it yet, but as a piece of kit there are some things which I think are really really cool and worth considering

    To PS3 !

On Tuesday night, the company put 200 units on advance sale on a cable TV shopping channel.
They were sold out in less than three minutes, leaving officials of Sony Entertainment Korea excited and baffled at the same time.

Team Ninja to do more PS3 titles

Ninja Gaiden Sigma director Yosuke Hayashi has spiritedly defended the PlayStation 3 in an exclusive interview with Eurogamer - and all but confirmed that Team Ninja will be working on further titles for the platform.

Speaking in London yesterday, Hayashi slammed developers who complain that the PS3 is difficult to create games for - saying that "if they think it's difficult, they should get out of the ring."

Responding to a question about whether the team had found it difficult to transition from working on the Xbox to the PS3, Hayashi said, "there are some developers who have complained about the difficulty of developing for PS3. But, I am a creator, a developer - and by making a product, we receive money from the players. We shouldn't complain about the difficulty."

In other words, it's their job, and they're just getting on with it.

Hayashi responded in similar terms when asked if the team, which has recently focused most of its efforts on Microsoft's platforms, plans to extend its support for the PS3 in future.

"As I said, people who complain about the difficulty of creating games for PS3 should get out, right?" Hayashi commented. "While I'm saying that kind of thing, if I get out myself, then what I say doesn't mean anything! So, I should stay - right?"

Given some of his earlier comments about plans for the SIXAXIS controller in future games, it seems almost certain that Team Ninja has plenty more in store for Darth Vader's George Foreman Grill down the line. We'll have the full interview with the outspoken Yosuke Hayashi, as well as our impressions of Ninja Gaiden's PS3 outing, available for your reading pleasure in the coming days.

Soulcalibur IV Will Remain at 60FPS
    1080P support is under consideration.

The latest issue of Famitu brings us a few new details about Soulcalibur IV before EGM drops the real bomb next month. For the hardcore: the game will run at 60FPS and they're currently considering supporting 1080P resolutions -- but it isn't confirmed.

Additionally, the story of Soul Calibur IV will be a continuation of Soul Calibur III, with a twist. Once, a man became a hero using the sword Soul Edge, but his son stole it from him for evil and ends up dying during battle. The hero (father) out of grief, decides to make Soul Calibur. This aspect will apparently will become a key to Soulcalibur 4's story.

Demo for The Darkness postponed, perhaps after release

If you're a subscriber to The Darkness' bulletin via MySpace or whatever, you may have been alerted to some news that's quite the disappointment. Initially, there was planned a demo prior to release, however, that seems to have changed. The developers issued this statement, in character: "The wicked embodiment of Light and Order, the Angelus, must be corrupting the Darkness somehow because the demo is not ready."

Yes, that's exactly why the demo isn't ready. In any case, they promised that "there will be a demo. I cannot guarantee that it will come before the game releases." We keep complaining about the lack of demos and this doesn't help. We know we'll get one, but getting it after the game is released almost defeats the purpose. Regardless, we'll be happy when it arrives because we simply can't fall on either side of the fence for this game.

"Thanks to the launch of platforms like PlayStation 3 the time is finally right for this transition," he explained. "Computers no longer have the edge on set-top systems. The technology is there; the audience is ready for deeper and more gripping experiences; and the bar's formally been raised in terms of enthusiasts' expectations. I hate to use the word convergence, but I don't know how else to describe the situation... The timing couldn't be more perfect."

"Sony's done an amazing job of establishing a quality standard and delivering on systems' promise. Look at the caliber of titles we're suddenly seeing from machines like the PlayStation 2 – the company takes a long-term view and really focuses on delivering amazing hardware right out of the box," he remarked

"Look at the level of content you're seeing on current-gen systems right now in the form of games like God of War II," Meier said. "Remember: The PlayStation 3 is light years ahead of this technology. As with any new platform, it's going to be a challenge and take designers some time to come to grips with the hardware. But believe me, you'll be amazed by the possibilities."

The PS3 launches successfully in Korea

It finally happened! Sony has launched their 80GB, video-on-demand ready, super cool edition PlayStation 3 in Korea. While we weren't there to celebrate the event, a few people over at the PS3Forums caught the action with their trusty internet-surfing abilities. We can already tell which picture the anti-Sony crowd will use as their "no one came" picture, but these pictures are actually of the countdown before the launch. People came as the launch grew closer, left their seats, and crowded the stage. It's hard to tell, but from what we can surmise, it seemed like a pretty big success. In any case, welcome to PS3-world, Korea. Check out the pictures and leave your thoughts!

Wipeout PS3 coming : Announcement set for August

Kikizo: Talking about the PlayStation Store on PS3, it's proved a lot more popular than many thought it would, and the quality on there has been higher than people expected even compared to Live - full-blown titles like WarHawk are only on Network. So do you think that WipEout - maybe in HD! - would prove popular as a download on PS Network?

Buckley: I think WipEout in HD would be stonking! And I think, you know, the arcade nature of WipEout, make it's so pick up and playable, so I think it would be brilliant... It's obvious we're doing a WipEout for the PS3 but... well, there will be an announcement in August.
