New Playstation 3 this Autumn
1
Trawling the CES show last month, T3.com happened across a rather juicy piece of gadget gossip.
According to a particularly well-informed insider, it seems that the Big S is prepping an all new PlayStation 3. The new incarnation is supposedly slimmer, lighter weight, and sexy as hell.
It's not as if Sony haven't got a history of making things slimmer and, er, lighter: The PSP shed a lot of its weight last summer, the original PlayStation ended up as the minuscule PSOne, and the PlayStation 2 re-incarnated as the PSTwo, which was an all-round sexier piece of kit to boot. Roll on PSThree?
EA: PS3 to outsell 360 next year
: http://www.gamer.tm/news.php?id=2029Electronic Arts has predicted that the Wii will remain the dominant platform in the West in 2008, but that the PS3 will enjoy better sales than the 360.
According to sales predictions issued by EA, the Wii will continue to dominate hardware sales in both North America and Europe, predicting that Nintendos console will sell between 12 and 14 million units during 2008.
However, the race for second place looks like it will be an interesting one, with the PS3 predicted to sell between 9.5 and 11.5 million units in the West this year, whereas the 360 will “only” manage 6-8 million during the same timeframe.
It seems that this shift in fortunes is going to be down to Europe. According to EAs predictions, 5-6 million PS3s will be sold in Europe this year, compared to 6.5-7.5 million Wiis and 1.5-2.5 million 360s.
In North America, EA reckons the both the 360 and PS3 will sell around 4.5-5.5 million units each, while the Wii will sell around a million more.
More importantly, with EA forecasting that only 3.9-4.9 million PS2s will be sold this year in the West – noticeably less than the next-gen formats – it seems that the games market is well on its way to moving on from the last generation of console.

EA dev: PSN has 'all the capabilities'
: http://www.computerandvideogames.com....php?id=181516Army of Two assistant producer, Matt Turner has told CVG that he fully supports PSN, but admitted experiencing "growing pains" with the relatively young system.
With its friends list access, universal game invites system and general intuitiveness, Xbox Live is rightly regarded as the superior service. Turner says, however, that PSN "has all the capabilities".

New PS3 Color in Japan
Plus, a bundle for Yakuza 3 and budget software!
While we continue to wait for something other than glossy black, the Japanese are about to get their third PlayStation 3 color variation. Sony announced today a new Satin Silver color, to be released on March 6.
Aside from the new color exterior, the Satin Silver PS3 is just like your standard 40 gigabyte PS3 system. Set to retail at the current standard price of 39,980 yen, the system will include a Satin Silver SIXAXIS controller.
Sony will also be releasing a similar colored Dual Shock 3 controller on the same day. This will retail for 5,500 yen, the current asking price for the peripheral's white and black color variations.
The 3/6 date should be familiar to fans of Sega's Yakuza series. That's the day of Yakuza 3's Japanese release. As it did with Capcom for Devil May Cry 4 late last month, Sony will be teaming up with Sega for the release of a special bundle combining the PS3 hardware with the new game.
The PlayStation 3 Ryu ga Gotoku Kenzan! Pack will include a Satin Silver PS3 and a copy of Yakuza 3, all for tax-inclusive 47,040 yen. This represents a small savings of about 920 yen over buying the two products separately. The package also includes a dragon sticker which players are presumably meant to fix on their new system.
Only 10,000 PS3 bundles will be produced, so Yakuza fans should check with their favorite import shops about pre-ordering.
As for the Satin Silver color variation PS3, it appears to be a permanent member of the growing PS3 color lineup. Let's hope a few of those variations make it out of Japan.
Sony Japan has also confirmed that it will be releasing a range of budge titles for the region known as The Best, with games Ridge Racer 7, Gundam: Target in Sight, Ninja Gaiden: Sigma, Resistance: Fall of Man and FolkSoul all retailing for JPY 3619 and going on sale Match 19.
Yesterday, Sony told GamesIndustry.biz it was "likely" that a budget PS3 software range would be introduced in Europe although no date or titles were mentioned.

Sony wants Pirates Versus Ninjas Dodgeball on PSN
Gamecock is trying to capitalize on the popular internet meme in their upcoming XBLA game, Pirates Versus Ninjas Dodgeball. Although currently an XBLA exclusive, it looks like there's strong interest to bring the game over to the PSN. "Sony really wants this Pirates vs Ninjas game we're doing for Xbox Live and we're platform agnostic so if we're investing in a title let's give it a chance wherever there is one," Gamecock CEO Mike Wilson told GI.biz.
The PSN offers a number of unique opportunities for developers. Unique games like flOw and Everyday Shooter have managed to flourish on the PSN -- certainly, they would've floundered if released in a traditional retail space. Also, unlike XBLA, there are no size limitations on what developers can provide. "The market's not there yet but it will be and it's nice that you don't have this 150MB limitation. It will be interesting to see how it emerges as a market.

Sony to offer PS2 game downloads via PSN to replace backwards compatibility?
With backwards compatibility unceremoniously dropped from the PS3 with the introduction of the 40GB console, in the latest issue of EGM, Playstation Network director Eric Lempell admitted that there are “possibilities” that Sony will allow gamers to purchase and download PS2 titles via the PSN.
Lempel said "We haven't talked about that yet, but there are possibilities through technology and software emulation to make that possibles," when asked about the possibility by the American magazine, obviously stoking the fires, and letting rumours run free.
As an idea – obviously nabbed from Microsoft and their Xbox Classics – it makes perfect sense. Allow PS3 owners to download the best that the PS2 had to offer for a few quid each, and we’ll all be nice and a happy folks.
But, how keen will people be to download versions of games that they already own physical copies of, and shelled out big bucks for not so long ago? Are we expected to purchase all our favourites yet again if we haven’t the space to keep the PS2 sat under the TV? Sounds like a nice way to extract some extra cash to me.
