Xbox One gamepad goes into low power sleep mode during movies, when you step away HD

The Xbox One controller isn't full of new bells and whistles, but it does have a few new tricks up its sleeves. The new gamepad can apparently go into a low power sleep mode, "if you're watching a movie or need to step away from the TV," according to a feature at Microsoft's official Xbox site. The controller will then re-awaken "the moment" it's picked up, the piece claims, and won't require resynchronization.


Aside from this new feature, the controller will apparently feature a the micro USB we've seen on prototypes in its finished form, so that it can be plugged in and used without batteries should the need arise (though with only one USB plug anywhere near the front of the console, it's not the most reliable solution for multiple people). This is in addition to the revamped thumbsticks and so-called "impulse triggers," as well as the more depressed battery compartment. Xbox One: Microsoft won't charge fee for used game licenses, requires online check-in once every 24 hours HD

Microsoft today unveiled plans to allow used games on its next game console, the Xbox One, ending speculation about fees associated with the process. "Microsoft does not charge a platform fee to retailers, publishers, or consumers for enabling transfer of these games," a Q&A regarding Xbox One licensing fees reads. "We designed Xbox One so game publishers can enable you to trade in your games at participating retailers." There is an exception noted, as the above only applies to Microsoft-published games apparently:

"Third party publishers may opt in or out of supporting game resale and may set up business terms or transfer fees with retailers. Microsoft does not receive any compensation as part of this. In addition, third party publishers can enable you to give games to friends. Loaning or renting games won't be available at launch, but we are exploring the possibilities with our partners."

There's also a piece detailing how the console's always online requirement will work, with a check-in needed once every 24 hours if you're on your home console (you'll only get one hour offline on a friend's console before getting booted). Beyond serving to check whether the game license you're using is official or not, Microsoft says the requirement will, "verify if system, application or game updates are needed and to see if you have acquired new games, or resold, traded in, or given your game to a friend." Sounds to us like a way to get around issues associated with not needing discs post-install to play games on the Xbox One. The piece also notes that, "Games that are designed to take advantage of the cloud may require a connection." There's no word on exceptions for military personnel or people who live in areas without internet -- the minimum suggested speed to maintain a connection is 1.5Mbps.

Finally, there's a piece about privacy which adds some interesting notes about the new, required Kinect. The "Xbox On" wake functionality can be disabled, and Microsoft assures that a variety of privacy settings will be available right from initial setup.

How game licensing works on the Xbox One (yes, it supports used games)

You will be able to give your Xbox One games to your friends, but only once and only to friends you've known for more than a month. That's according to the new rules shared today about Xbox One game licensing by Microsoft.

All games will be available new in both disc or digital form, and will need to be installed on your Xbox One while logged in. From there, you'll be registered for the game on the cloud, so you'll be able to play it wherever you're logged into an Xbox One, even if you happen to be at a friend's house.

You will have the option to resell that game back to a retailer, but that retailer will have to sign up with Microsoft to allow you to do so. Microsoft won't charge fees to do that, but it does say that "third party publishers may opt in or out of supporting game resale and may set up business terms or transfer fees with retailers." You can give the game away, but only once and only to someone who's been on your friends list for that required 30 days.

Microsoft also says that the ability to loan or rent games "won't be available at launch, but we are exploring the possibilities with our partners." All of the information about game licensing on the new console can be seen on the official Xbox One site.

Xbox One requires online connection every 24 hours, at least

The Xbox One needs to connect to the internet at least once every 24 hours, or its ability to play games is shut down, a post on Xbox Wire says. This is for a player logged into his own console – if a player logs into his account on a separate console at a friend's house, for example, the Xbox One needs to be connected to the internet at least once every hour.

"With Xbox One you can game offline for up to 24 hours on your primary console, or one hour if you are logged on to a separate console accessing your library," Xbox Wire writes. "Offline gaming is not possible after these prescribed times until you re-establish a connection, but you can still watch live TV and enjoy Blu-ray and DVD movies."

This is the clearest explanation of the Xbox One's internet requirements since Microsoft's reveal on May 21. In a post it removed from Xbox Wire, Microsoft said the console "does not have to be always connected, but Xbox One does require a connection to the Internet."

Microsoft recommends a broadband internet connection of 1.5Mbps for the Xbox One, and suggests mobile broadband for those without access to an Ethernet connection. Xbox One has two wireless antennas, and a gigabit Ethernet port and 802.11n wireless.

"Because every Xbox One owner has a broadband connection, developers can create massive, persistent worlds that evolve even when you're not playing," Xbox Wire says.

Microsoft addresses Xbox One Kinect privacy concerns

Addressing recent concerns raised by Germany's federal commissioner for data protection and other sources, Microsoft has detailed how users can maintain their personal privacy when using the Xbox One's motion-sensing Kinect camera.

Emphasizing that "You are in control of what Kinect can see and hear," Microsoft notes that individual user and family privacy settings can be accessed during Xbox One setup or at any time afterward. In addition, the company assures that conversation and other background noise will not be recorded or monitored by Kinect in any way.

"By design, you will determine how responsive and personalized your Xbox One is to you and your family during setup," Microsoft said. "The system will navigate you through key privacy options, like automatic or manual sign in, privacy settings, and clear notifications about how data is used. When Xbox One is on and you're simply having a conversation in your living room, your conversation is not being recorded or uploaded."

Microsoft also notes that the Kinect can be disabled at any time during console operation, though some games may require the peripheral to be active for certain gameplay features.

While Kinect monitoring will play a key role in certain game types (Microsoft cites exercise apps and multiplayer card games as examples), alternate control schemes for menus and other functions will be available via the Xbox One's controller and connected mobile devices while the Kinect is paused.

Με λιγα λογια μας λενε οτι στο χωριο σου/εξοχικο σου που ειναι στο βουνο/γιαγια-παππου η κονσολα σου ειναι αχρηστη γιατι δεν εχει internet.

Αυτό μου χτυπάει πολύ άσχημα. Και μην ακούσω κανέναν να μου πει για mobile internet, γιατί αφενός πολλά χωριά έχουν μόνο GPRS ή άντε EDGE (με την καμία δηλαδή δεν φτάνει το όριο του 1.5 Mbps, για να μην αναφέρω το τραγικό ping/latency) και αφετέρου είναι πανάκριβο και εξαιρετικά περιοριστικό με τις ογκοχρεώσεις που βάζουν.

Αν δεν έχει τέτοια νταβατζιλίκια το PS4 και δεδομένου ότι ξέρουμε ήδη ότι έχει και Analog A/V out θύρα (SCART & Component), τότε θα σαρώσει σε όλες τις κατηγορίες καταναλωτών.

Τραγική MS, τραγικές πρακτικές. Το gaming πραξικόπημα έχει ολοκληρωθεί, ξεχάστε αυτά που ξέρατε μια για πάντα. Και πολύ φοβάμαι οτι θα ακολουθήσει και η Sony ως ένα βαθμό σε κάποια πράγματα.
