Analysts sound off: What does Blu-ray winning mean to the PS3 and gamers?


The big boys of game industry analysis are back to tell GameDaily what they think this new Blu-ray tide of exclusivity will mean to gamers. Sure, the big talk is that Blu-ray winning could mean a PS3 price cut, but that'll only benefit those who don't already have the latest console Kutaragi built. For consumers with a PS3 snug at home, they should breathe a little easier knowing they won't have to buy another HD movie player in the near future. But what do the boys with the crystal balls think?

• Mike Hickey, Janco Partners: The PS3 will eventually receive an awakening as Blu-ray becomes the winning format, this will lead to larger install base and motivate third-party developers to the PS3.
• Michael Pachter, Wedbush Morgan Securities: Says Sony once said 70 - 80% of PS2 owners treated it as their first DVD player, he believes the same will hold true for HD movies -- except that there is currently only a 10% penetration with 1080p televisions. He also says there will be a sales spike later this year coinciding with another price cut.
• Colin Sebastian, Lazard Capital Markets: He says when consumers decide they "need" a Blu-ray player it certainly can't hurt the PS3, especially if its games improve and hardware prices decline.
• David Cole, DFC Intelligence: Doesn't believe Blu-ray is a determining factor in the console wars, but it is a nice bonus. He believes if a consumer were stuck choosing between two gaming platforms that were equal, then the Blu-ray might tip them over to the PS3. But he says the list for consumers goes: Price, good exclusive games, and, finally, Blu-ray.

Sony launches new bargain PS3 bundle


Console and two premium games to retail for £349.99
Sony Computer Entertainment Europe has announced a new bundle offer for consumers that will see PlayStation 3 retail for £349.99 with two first-party titles.

The deal, dubbed ‘Pick N Mix’ by the platform holder, will begin at retail next Friday, January 18th and will run ‘until further notice’.
Games involved in the offer include Ratchet and Clank: Tools Of Destruction, Formula One, L.A.I.R, Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune and Singstar PS3 (with microphones).

Other titles in the deal include Motorstorm, Resistance: Fall Of Man, Folklore, Warhawk (with headset) and Genji: Days of the Blade.

2K Boston, the team behind the wildly success Bioshock, is looking for a number of PS3 programmers. "PS3 and production experience using Python or Ruby will be highly regarded" for the Tools Programmer position. "Experience with PS3 development is highly desirable." for the Senior Console Programmer position. "PlayStation3 experience highly desirable" for the Programmer position.

Something has us thinking that the 2K Boston team is making a PS3 game. Just call it a hunch. Of course, this is in stark contrast to previous rumors that they were avoiding PS3 altogether. Could the sequel to Bioshock be coming to PS3? Considering 2K's acquisition of the team, we say it's very likely.

THQ has announced it will acquire Big Huge Games (Rise of Nations, Catan) for an undisclosed sum, making the Maryland-based studio a wholly-owned subsidiary.

In May of 2007, THQ and Big Huge Games announced a development agreement for an RPG led by Oblivion developer Ken Rolston, currently anticipated for a 2009 debut on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.

Από την πρώτη μέρα εμφάνισης του PS3, ένα από τα βασικότερα σημεία άσκησης κριτικής ήταν η υψηλή τιμή του, λόγω της απόφασης της Sony να συμπεριλάβει στον εξοπλισμό του ένα ακριβό Blu-ray drive. Αν και αρκετές εταιρείες παραγωγής παιχνιδιών θα προτιμούσαν το PS3 χωρίς το Blu-ray, η ίδια η Sony ήταν πεπεισμένη ότι αυτή ήταν η σωστότερη απόφαση. Σήμερα, και με το Blu-ray format να ενισχύεται μέρα με την ημέρα, η πεποίθηση αυτή φαίνεται να δικαιώνεται. - Δεν ήταν όμως μόνο οι καταναλωτές που βρήκαν την κονσόλα ακριβή, αφού και η Sony πλήρωσε και πληρώνει το κόστος αυτής της επιλογής. Πάντως, σύμφωνα με τον Ewaza, η Sony Computer Entertainment αναμένεται να χάσει ακόμα 1,4 δισεκατομμύρια δολάρια το τρέχον οικονομικό έτος, που προστίθενται στα 2,1 δισεκατομμύρια δολάρια που έχασε το προηγούμενο. Οι υπεύθυνοι της εταιρείας, πάντως, εκτιμούν ότι ο τομέας του Playstation θα γίνει κερδοφόρος από το επόμενο οικονομικό έτος.
