Naughty Dog's first PS3 project is going to turn some heads. As it turns out, company president and all around nice guy Evan Wells said that his team created Uncharted: Drake's Fortune with that exact idea in mind.

It shows.

Even at this unfinished point in its development, the texture work and special effects in Uncharted are phenomenal (and they're locked at 720p, "for framerate stability", according to Wells), while the animations are equally impressive. Consider this: lead character Ethan Drake boasts more than 3000 animations alone with individual sequences based on a specific shot... that's quite an attention to detail.

Perhaps even more notable is the fact that, once the game starts, there won't be any loading at all. Everything is streamed directly off the Blu-ray disc (level data, animation, sound, etc) and while such a feat has been done in other titles, we can't recall one that had this much activity going on as it happened. Plus, the stages themselves are huge -- the area shown to us was only a small portion of a much bigger section and even that had a little bit of everything: hand-to-hand combat, platforming elements, and gunplay like crazy.

The good news is that handling each aspect in-game isn't difficult at all; L1 aims your gun (you can have two, a single-handed weapon and a double-handed one) and R1 fires it. Like most games of this type, the X button jumps and the Triangle acts as a contextual action button for things such as opening doors, picking up weapons and other some such. Circle covers (you can only do so behind manmade objects), sprints, and allows Ethan to drop down from ledges, and as you might have guessed, it's as easy to operate as it sounds.

Selecting weapons in real time is just as trouble-free. The digital pad handles everything -- up reloads your gun, left switches to single-hand, right moves to double and tapping down equips your grenades. As a nice touch, the amount of arc on your grenade is dictated by your use of the Sixaxis controller. Sixaxis manipulation also gives players a means to balance themselves on narrow walkways or jump away from walls, and it leads into understanding the finer points of navigation (which is important) -- as the game increases, figuring out how to successfully make it through Tomb Raider-like rappels and Prince of Persia super jumps are what the adventure is all about.

Speaking of adventure, old-school movies and books created in the "pulp" style were a definite inspiration for Uncharted. Alan Quartermain, Indiana Jones, and even John McClane were exactly the type of guys that Naughty Dog wanted to draw from when creating Ethan Drake. He's essentially an ordinary man in an extraordinary situation, and his quick quips and need to diffuse the tension of a bad situation make for cool cinema.

To keep the idea that you're playing through a true adventure, Naughty Dog has also minimized the HUD so that the only information you'll see is your equipped weapon and its ammo. Instead of a health bar, the designers have used a pseudo-luck meter that drains the screen of color and amplifies the sound of your heartbeat as Ethan gets into rougher and rougher situations. The longer Drake stays in a bad position, the more the screen desaturates; the more the screen desaturates; the more likely Ethan is to die.

There are plenty of other little touches that add to the immersion as well. You blast a guy in the head, for instance, and it's a one-shot instant kill. Throw punches or kicks too quickly, on the other hand, and you'll swing wildly doing little damage while barely touching anything. On that same note, if you time melee attacks correctly you can do some seriously damaging two-hit combos or throws. Additional realism tidbits include: invisible checkpoints for post-death respawns, aimless blind-fire shooting, a dynamic music system, AI that works together to try and outflank you, and some seriously realistic water effects.

But what of the story? Naughty Dog doesn't want to say too much, other than this: Ethan believes himself to be a descendant of Sir Francis Drake (who supposedly didn't have any offspring) and he's out on a quest to prove it. Well okay, he wants to find Drake's treasure too (he is a treasure hunter after all). It was also confirmed that the game won't only take place in a jungle -- in fact, it begins off the coast of Panama on a dive boat as Ethan searches for Drake's body, but eventually shifts to the Amazonian jungle, a pre-Incan temple, a derelict U-boat, and an abandoned Spanish colony. Players can also expect three-way battles with competing enemies (ragtag pirates and sophisticated military types), a possible love interest with a documentary hostess named Elena, and 10-12 hour plot-driven expedition with a single ending but widened paths.

Naughty Dog expects to have a lot more on Uncharted: Drake's Fortune at E3. Being that it's one of, if not the most impressive PlayStation 3 game we've seen so far, we hope to see it there ourselves.

GameSpy Preview για το Uncharted: Drake's Fortune

Naughty Dog's Uncharted: Drake's Fortune has remained shrouded in mystery. We first saw footage of it last year during SCEA's notorious E3 press event. At the time, all we saw was a short clip for an untitled game that established that a hero in a jungle setting got a little too deep into his treasure hunting. Now, a year later, the game's got a title, a new trailer, and a playable build. We got a lot of hands-on time with the Uncharted demo, and while there's certainly some stuff that needs fine-tuning before release, we're confident that it could end up being one of the best titles to grace the PS3 this year.

Before our hands-on time, Naughty Dog president Evan Wells took the podium to present the game to the press. Citing the development house's long, storied history with Sony, Wells laid out the ideas behind Uncharted. For years, the Naughty Dog team had wanted to make a game with human characters, but the power of gaming hardware has traditionally limited what could be accomplished. With the PlayStation, the Crash Bandicoot franchise was the best that could be pulled off, given the system's limitations. With the PlayStation 2's capabilities, the dev house took a step closer, with the rise of the Jak franchise and its humanoid characters. With the PS3, Naughty Dog's vision of a heavily story-based game with realistic people has finally been realized.

Wells went on to say that the core ideas behind Uncharted's story lie in pulp adventure novels. From reading hundreds of trashy novels of treasure hunts and exotic tales, Naughty Dog formulated three ideas that drive the game: intense gunfights, an emphasis on hand-to-hand combat, and big, dangerous stunts. With the PS3's capabilities, Wells said that there is no way that Uncharted could have been made for any other system, let alone fit on a single disc. Naughty Dog plans to maximize the storage space that the Blu-ray format offers, while alternately utilizing the PS3's hard drive cache to minimize load times.

With those ideas in mind, we picked up a Sixaxis and jumped right into the action. As the hero Nathan Drake, you'll take on the role of a treasure hunter in search of lost fortune left behind by Sir Francis Drake (who might or might not be his ancestor) on a deserted jungle island. Along the way, there will be hazards, both human and natural, that will threaten to thwart his quest for loot. You'll control him through gameplay that should feel familiar to any action gamer.

Circle will put you into a cover state when up against walls. When you're not close to a wall, it will make you dive, which comes in handy when you're under fire. X lets you jump. Square is largely used for hand-to-hand combat, which we've been told will carry more depth in the final product than it does in this demo. Triangle is the context-sensitive button that allows you to pick up objects in the environment. The d-pad will allow you to pick weapons. L1 is used to whip out your gun and target things in the environment, while R1 fires. L2 allows you to look around the jungle and gravitate towards potential clues about where to go next.

The first thing we noticed about Uncharted is that it's an amazing-looking game. While we've seen third-party teams develop next-gen games that crank up the lighting and make everything look too shiny or plastic-like, Naughty Dog has managed to create realistic-looking models, and set up the lighting so that characters look and feel much more real than a lot of what we've been seeing over the last two years. Foliage looks well-detailed, and while branches don't break, the art design goes a long way in creating a believable jungle environment. We're also impressed with the emotion on characters' faces. While we couldn't see the faces of enemies, our hero's face shows signs of fear and anguish while he's in a cover position. Nathan is not a Marcus Fenix; he's a guy who'd probably rather not kill people, and rather not put his life on the line, and it clearly shows on his face every time someone's firing off a few rounds at him.

The platforming elements of Uncharted remind us of the best parts of the Tomb Raider franchise. The game has been referred to, disparagingly or not, as "Dude Raider." It's probably a little unfair, but we feel that this game's levels and design remind us of the best parts of Lara Croft's myriad adventures. From mossy rocks to rich jungle vines and indigenous ruins, there will be plenty for you to explore, jump around, and climb. However, the richness of the environment also means that you'll have to decide on your jumps carefully; our demo ended at a challenging waterfall challenge that ensured that any bad jump would end up with an instant death, and more often than not, we mistimed a jump thinking that the foliage would save us. Not so much.

With that in mind, we're really happy with Uncharted's visuals, platforming, and presentation. That doesn't mean, however, that Naughty Dog doesn't have its work cut out for it in the six or so months before the game comes to market. Upon firing up the demo, we noticed that some of the collision detection needs a little work; a few misplaced dives drove our hero through some of the mossy rocks on the level. Among the problems that we faced, however, collision detection was minor. There are other things that need work, such as the shooting system.

Where Naughty Dog is going to need the most work in turning an impressive demo into an acclaimed game will lie in Uncharted's combat system and camera. While the platforming is great and the visuals are amazing so far, the gunplay has some catching up to do at this point. When we saw Naughty Dog's onstage demo, we assumed that perhaps the demonstrator just had bad aim, but we were quite wrong once we got a controller in our hands. There's no auto-aim in Uncharted, but the targeting feels really loose; it's hard to hit a moving target without wasting precious ammo. It's got the same over-the-shoulder camera as Resident Evil 4 and Gears of War, but will need some tweaking time to reach those games' levels of precision. Also, a headshot doesn't necessarily result in a kill, which we're not happy about and would like to see addressed in a future build. We seemed to score some great hits when we blind-fired on enemies, but we need some more accurate shooting when we've got someone in our crosshairs. More than anything, we hope to see this fine-tuned before release.

Also, while the camera doesn't suffer from too many problems in regard to angles, it will require some optimization in the months ahead. More than one person who played the demo commented that the camera gave them some motion sickness issues. Amidst all of the high-octane action, there's something jarring and disorienting about the camera pans during gameplay, and it gave us a big headache as we played an otherwise exceptionally impressive demo.

In closing, there hasn't been much buzz about Uncharted: Drake's Fortune up until now. For the most part, Sony has been spotlighting other titles, such as Heavenly Sword, Warhawk, and Lair. However, for gamers weaned on adventure games in the vein of Tomb Raider and the modern Prince of Persia titles, this should jump out front-and-center as one of the top games to watch this year. Even people who've shunned Naughty Dog's past titles will probably find themselves interested in this more mature storyline. That's not to say that there aren't issues that we'd like to see addressed; the camera borders on nausea-inducing at this point, and the targeting system is very loose, but we're giving Naughty Dog the benefit of a doubt at this point in production. The team behind classics such as Crash Bandicoot and Jak & Daxter has managed to take Uncharted from a title-less tech showcase to one of our most anticipated games of the year with a single demo. We're definitely looking forward to the next.

The combat featured in the trailer - especially hand-to-hand stuff - looks incredible. How are you managing to give the player satisfying control in these moments, but with enough precision for effective, tactical combat choices?

Hennig: The hand-to-hand combat, like all of Drake’s moves, is contextually driven. So the player can make tactical choices based on terrain, enemy position and facing, etc. In other words, Drake will perform different attacks if the enemy is facing forward or away, if he’s standing near an edge, if he’s near a high or low wall, etc. This not only provides a huge variety of combat outcomes, but enables the player to make predictive choices.

Uncharted has made few appearances since it was revealed this time last year - how far into development is the game, and have you a predicted release date?

Hennig: We’ve been working on Uncharted for a couple of years now, starting with a small concept team after we shipped Jak 3. It’s hard to put a percent complete on the game at this point, but we’re targeting a holiday release.

Hennig: Absolutely - we created Uncharted with the old cliffhanger serials in mind, so this game is just the first in an ongoing series of adventures.

Will Uncharted feature unlockable "trophies" that players will be able to view and show off within Sony's Home service?

Hennig: Yes, since our game is about treasure hunting and heroic exploits, it’s a perfect fit for the personalization, content-sharing and trophies, features of the PS3 Home community.

As a developer you're firmly associated with PlayStation, but are there any elements of Wii and Xbox 360 that has really excited you?

Hennig: I think the Wii is a really cool evolution in gaming - it’s so accessible, and it’s great how it’s awakened the inner gamer in so many people who may never have had an interest in games before. And as a gamer, it’s exciting to see how the Xbox 360 has opened up the online aspect of console gaming. But as a developer, I wouldn’t trade the PlayStation 3 for either of them.

Με 'κανε να πάρω το psOne με το Crash και να ερωτευτώ μια.... αλεπού!
Με πήγε στο διάστημα να πολεμήσω έναν τρελό επιστήμονα....Με πήγε στην Αίγυπτο με τις μούμιες....
Και τώρα μετά απο τόσα χρόνια και εκεί που έπαιζα το Crash στο PS3 και έφερνα στη μνήμη μου όλα αυτά είδα το trailer του Uncharted στο site της...
Έπαθα πλάκα...Μετά ήρθαν οι photos και τώρα τα trailer και το playable demo στο Gamers Day 2007!!!
Ειλικρινά δε μπορω να πω κάτι παραπάνω...
Αν είχα πάρει άλλη κονσόλα και έβλεπα αυτό το game σαν PS3 exclusive θα χα ξενερώσει τόσο πολύ που θα πέταγα την κονσόλα απ το παράθυρο...
Με μία φράση λοιπον τελείωνω το παραλήρημα :P

2 gif που δείχνουν τι λεπτομέρια στα animations του παιχνιδιού...Και λέγεται ότι οι λεπτομέριες και τα animations που παρουσιάστηκαν στο demo του event υπολογίζουν ότι θα είναι στο 1/3 περίπου της τελικής έκδοσης!! :shock:

Kikizo: Do you feel developers are tapping into the true power of the PS3 yet? How are you going to take it further?

Lemarchand: The PlayStation 3 is absolutely unprecedented as a piece of video game hardware - its unique Cell processor architecture is making things possible that previous generations of game developers have only dreamt of, and I think this next generation of titles is going to blow a lot of minds.

We've been incredibly lucky to have some of Naughty Dog's key programmers involved in the development of Sony's proprietary game-creation tools, and that's given us a huge leg-up in terms of how far ahead of the curve we are with the machine.

I think that we're already quite a way ahead of where we were last generation, in terms of what kind of performance we're pulling out of the hardware; but what gets us really excited is thinking about the vast untapped potential that the machine still has.

Σε ένα απ' αυτά τα video ένας developer της Naughty Dog λέει πως αυτή τη στιγμή το παιχνίδι χρησιμοποιεί περίπου το 30% της ισχύoς του PS3 ενώ θέλουν όταν τελειώσει το development να έχουν φτάσει ένα 50%. Απλά λόγια ενός dev που πληρώνεται από την Sony για να αυξήσει το hype του παιχνιδιού και να κολακεύσει το μηχάνημα? Εγώ θα πω ΛΑΘΟΣ! Απόδειξη? Οι first party developers έχουν στα χέρια τους εργαλεία από την ίδια την ΙΒΜ και την Nvidia που τους δείχνουν πόσο αποτελεσματικός είναι ο κώδικας τους και πόσο πολύ εκμεταλλεύονται το hardware που έχουν στα χέρια τους. Και ακόμη μια απόδειξη? Δείτε τι παιχνίδια κυκλοφόρησαν σε όλες τις κονσόλες (ειδικά στο PS2) κατά την κυκλοφορία τους και κατά τη διάκρεια που έκλειναν ουσιαστικά τον κύκλο ζωής τους. Gamespy Preview & Impressions

When we last saw Uncharted: Drake's Fortune (http://ps3.gamespy.com/playstation-3/naughty-dog-ps3-project/), it was two months ago at Sony's media event in San Diego. That was the coming-out party for Naughty Dog's action title, which has been under development for two and a half years. The game was easily the best we saw from SCEA's first party lineup. With that in mind, we were more than happy to jump in and see more of it in action at E3. Unlike the demo we played a couple of months ago, this build of Uncharted addressed some of the issues that we had, and we got a bit more of the game's backstory during our one-hour breakout session with Naughty Dog today.

We knew that UDF will put you in the shoes of fortune hunter Nathan Drake, who may or may not have familial ties to English pirate (hero to the Brits) Sir Francis Drake. We knew that he's in search of treasure in an exotic jungle setting. We knew that there'll be lots of pirates and hoodlums with the same idea and a lot more guns. And that's about all we knew.

Turns out that's just the tip of the iceberg. As Naughty Dog CEO Evan Wells mentioned in the past, UDF is an evolution from animals (the Crash games on PlayStation) to humanoids (the Jak games on PlayStation 2) to human beings on PlayStation 3. The team talked to SCEA, and cycled through many ideas, before deciding on a title inspired strongly by action films and the sorts of Saturday morning serials that inspired George Lucas to write "Star Wars" and "Indiana Jones."

After reading lots of pulp novels and watching movies like "Gunga Din," the team concluded that most of these movies consisted of a common thread. There's a hero, and he's being chased because he possesses something, or he's chasing someone through perils to get something. With Drake, Naughty Dog is working on creating a hero who is physically fit and rather agile, but obviously not a bald space marine. The developer's goal with Nathan Drake is to put you in the role of a guy who's in decent shape, but is obviously being pushed to his limits.

Game's Storyline
With that in mind, we discovered much more about the game's storyline than we knew before. Not only is Nathan Drake chasing treasure, it turns out that he's in search of loot on a Pacific island that's not actually on any maps. It's a former Spanish colony that's historically been a midpoint of gold-running between the West Coast of the US and the Philippines. He's been tapped by Alanna Fisher, a TV personality who hosts a cable show about exotic travel and treasure hunting. She's planning to film an episode about finding Drake's treasure, and Nathan's the man for the job. The adventure really kicks in as their charter plane is shot down by a World War II-era anti-air gun.

GamePlay
In the two new levels that we saw earlier today, Nathan has lost Alanna, and the only trace of her he can find is her parachute. From here, we saw the balance of platforming -- Naughty Dog calls it traversal -- and intense gunplay. The level starts out as Drake climbs a stone wall to get into a jungle fort. Even with no one to shoot at, Naughty Dog has managed to created a heightened sense of tension amidst the adventure. The textures of the wall are so smooth that it's easy to make a mistimed jump and fall to your doom if you're not careful. You can easily jump for the wrong jungle vine and end up dead a hundred feet below. Or maybe it's us; we were told that the first new level that we played is actually a third of the way into the game, and apparently, you'll know better once you play the final product.

What we definitely noticed that's different from the previous build was largely in regard to combat. The targeting is a little tighter than before, though it's still a work in progress. There are also more animations in place, so that now, when you get a headshot, it's visibly obvious. The enemies are still pretty tough to drop, but that's a balancing issue that the team has lots of time to work out. Most importantly, while there was pretty much no melee combat in the last build, today we saw a rich variety of animations, from drop kicks and clotheslines to crotch kicks and wall-assisted face smashes.

We knew that the Sixaxis' motion controls handle balancing when Nathan crosses logs and thin columns, but it will also be used for adjusting the arc when throwing grenades. If you keep it close to you, he won't toss it too hard. If you extend it out, he'll lob it fairly far. Speaking of grenades, we like what Naughty Dog is doing with grenades. If you're too close to a grenade when it detonates, it will cause a sound effect for a few seconds that sounds like ringing ears, whether it damages you or not. It will also tilt the screen by a few degrees.

We also noticed some small stuff and asked a few questions. For example, in the first trailer, Alanna is a brunette. Now, she's got sandy blonde hair. Apparently, the hair shader was a bone of contention among the team, so they settled on changing her color. They're not sure if they're going to add difficulty settings or not, but we know that the action got tough in the later parts of the demo. We also asked how long the team is planning to make the game for the average player, and they're aiming for a ten to twelve hour-long experience, which seems like the sweet spot for an action game these days.

We also asked them about hard drive caching. Wells has mentioned in the past that UDF could not be made for any other platform thanks to the sheer amount of data that it requires to run the game. It needs the storage space of Blu-ray in order to run on a single disc, especially in light of the fact that during intense shootouts, you'll see eight different animations onscreen at the same time. That doesn't mean, however, that we weren't curious about how much space will cache to the PS3's hard drive, should you decide to install it. At the maximum, expect to see two gigabytes, but it could be less.


Beyond that, we're glad that we sat in on the hour-long breakout session for Uncharted: Drake's Fortune (http://ps3.gamespy.com/playstation-3/naughty-dog-ps3-project/) before we got hands-on with the new build of the game. We learned a great deal about not only the technical aspects of the game, but discovered a potentially strong storyline that will drive the action. We're glad to see that the targeting system has gotten some improvements since we last played it, and there are damage-specific locations that have been added into the animation. Also, while there are still some minor camera issues, the framerate feels like it's more stable than it was during our last session. Ultimately, we have no qualms about saying that it's one of the best games we've seen in Santa Monica this week.

Να θυμίσω οτι το παιχνίδι είναι από τους δημιουργούς του jack & dexter. Το πρώτο jack της σειράς ήταν τεχνολογικό θαύμα. Τεράστιος ενιαίος κόσμος με stream από το δισκάκι για μηδενικό loading. 60fps και άπειρο draw distance. Το platform που έβαλε τα γυαλιά στο Mario 64.

Επίσης το uncharted είναι νέο ip και exclusive. Το ψωνίζουμε χωρίς να το σκεφτόμαστε.

What happens when you mix one part Gears of War, one part Tomb Raider, and one part Prince of Persia? You get one potentially awesome game. We really want to like Naughty Dog's upcoming PS3 exclusive, Uncharted, but technical issues seriously hindered our enjoyment of the title.

If there's one thing everyone has been talking about with Uncharted, it's the complex animation system. Thousands of animations are blended together in real-time to create a visually complex world that feels alive. Drake responds to his surroundings: you'll see him look at points of interest, struggling to keep his footing, and more. In one heated gunfight, we had him take cover fire and could see the worried look on his face as he breathed heavily The animation system helps make Drake not only a more believable character, but one we can relate to.

Drake is supposed to be a normal guy in an extraordinary situation, and the platforming sequences deliver upon the feeling of overcoming overwhelming obstacles. Drake will have to climb along rocky ledges, or jump from a shaky pillar to the next. Seeing what Drake can interact with the environment is intuitive due to Drake's focus on where he must go next. By observing what Drake wants to do, players will be able to navigate tricky areas with relative ease. Swinging from a rope and jumping to a ledge feels intuitive and empowering. We love the feeling we get when exploring the environment.

We have no qualms about the platforming aspects of the game. However, combat proved to be difficult, due to its rather cumbersome controls, and buggy performance. The game employs a cover system, not unlike that found in Gears of War. For example, Drake can hide behind a wall, peek out and fire a few rounds. Then, he can run forward and take cover behind a rock. However, we found ourselves having a lot of difficulty "sticking" to the appropriate cover, in the direction we wanted to. Gears of War features an elegant control mechanism, where all actions are performed through the context-sensitive A button. Uncharted uses multiple buttons on the controller for the same actions, which is certainly disorienting.

In addition, we found ourselves constantly clipping through walls and other objects. We tried to take cover behind a wall, and as we rolled out, we found ourselves stuck inside a barrel. Then, we had to fight the camera, which had also become fixated on the wall. We were lucky to have somehow escaped before an enemy threw a grenade in our direction.

The camera simply doesn't feel intelligent enough: we were struggling to keep it in check at all times. It's too bad that uncomfortable controls, glitches, and a finicky camera are getting in the way of a potentially excellent game. We were impressed by the enemy AI: they take cover, try to flank you, and perform melee attacks when close.

If any game needs to be delayed, it has to be Uncharted: Drake's Fortune. We're confident that the team at Naughty Dog can make a stellar game, and we doubt they'll rush Uncharted just to make its November release. Considering how many other high-profile games are arriving on PS3 (and other consoles) later this year, we'd love to see Naughty Dog take the time to really iron out the bugs and refine the controls -- if they do, Uncharted can easily be one of the best games on the platform.

Με λίγα λόγια αφού αναφέρουν τα τρομερά animations και όλα τα υπόλοιπα + του παιχνιδιού λένε ότι με το demo που παίξανε είχαν πρόβλημα με τους εχθρούς( ήταν πολύ δύσκολοι) και το cover system και ότι είχαν προβλήματα με την κάμερα. Πιστεύουνε στο παιχνίδι και στην Naughty Dog και την παροτρίνουν αν χρειαστεί να καθυστερήσει το παιχνίδι για να διορθωθούν αυτά τα μικροπροβλήματα. Άρχισαν τα όργανα... :rant:Ελπίζω να υπερβάλλουν λίγο και να προλάβει η ND να φτιάχει όλα αυτά μέχρι το Νοέμβρη μιας και φαινομενικά το παιχνίδι από όσο έχουμε δει τεχνικά είναι έτοιμο. Δε θέλω να περιμένω για αυτό το παιχνίδι το περιμένω από την πρώτη μέρα που είδα το πρώτο πρώτο trailer. Αλλά αν χρειαστεί προτιμώ να περιμένω παρά να μην πάρω κάτι καλό... Ας περιμένουμε να δούμε!

Uncharted: Drake's Fortune Hands-on

Tomb Raider is a huge success and this can largely be put down to a few key selling points. Yes, Lara is a woman and sports rather large appendages, but many of us grew up loving the Indiana Jones movies. While Lara certainly made the series her own, there's no denying the link. Uncharted: Drake's Fortune, a PS3 exclusive from Naughty Dog, is very much in the same vein. This time with a man as the playable character, we took the controls for a good twenty minutes of gameplay.

The first thing of note wasn't the gameplay at all, but the game's light hearted approach to story telling. While the hero is often in life threatening situations he doesn't let it get to him, with cutscenes often displaying the kind of one-liners and comedy timing that Harrison Ford would be proud of. The full extent of the story and the range of environments is still to be revealed, but it's likely that this adventure will take place across numerous large environments.

Jumping into the action things seemed remarkably solid and fluid. Your character runs and hops over scenery with beautiful realism that really has to be seen to be believed. Everything feels very Tomb Raider, but whereas Lara's adventuring is often a little stilted, Uncharted feels far more organic. The main character features over 3000 animations, and each of these can be blended to create incredibly natural motion.
This is shown throughout the game, from the simplest of tasks like picking up ammo, to hanging from a cliff edge while shooting at the same time. Whereas most games these days feature a cover system that lets you poke out and fire at an enemy, the ability to do this from almost anywhere is a great touch. At one point in my time with the game I was running from a group of enemies and took cover over a small cliff edge. Not knowing it was possible, I whipped out my gun and proceeded to take out the enemies while still relatively safe from fire.

The game seems to be as much about action as it is exploration, but this isn't a third-person shooter. During general movement the camera is fairly loose, as you'd expect in a 3D platformer, but when targeting the game switches to a more gun-friendly viewpoint. Certain cool moments are highlighted in what the developers are calling 'Here Moments' where you'll be treated to a more cinematic viewpoint for a few seconds. It works well, without taking you out of the game for too long.
Environments in the game are large enough to allow for players to approach things in different ways and the weapons you choose to carry will also play a part. You can only carry a pistol and grenades plus a single secondary weapon at any one time, meaning you have to be a little picky over what you leave on the battlefield. Because of the aforementioned ways to get through each area, the team at Naughty Dog have put little signposts in, pointing you in the right direction. At certain points you can press L2 to focus the camera on a particular area of interest, hopefully meaning you won't spend ages wandering around aimlessly.
The jumping and leaping feels incredibly natural and fluid

As ever some Sixaxis motion control has been built into the game. Grenade trajectory is controlled by tilting the Sixaxis until the throw arc ends in your desired location and walking along narrow bridges often requires you to tilt the pad in order to remain balanced. It's simple stuff, but works well without feeling tacked on and gimmicky.
There are many great looking PS3 exclusives due out in the final quarter of 2007, but Uncharted could well be the most impressive upon its release. The animation alone is incredible, but the detail in the environments is superb and the use of vibrant colouring gives the game a bold appearance that's worlds away from the dour greys and browns we've become used to.
Going into E3 2007 I knew that the PS3 would have a good show, but with this, LAIR, Heavenly Sword and Ratchet & Clank the much criticised next-gen console could well have a quartet of titles that Sony's rivals will be jealous of come this holiday season.

Εδώ οι τύποι λένε τα ακριβώς αντίθετα...:confused::confused: Λένε για την κάμερα ότι είναι πολύ καλή και ελεύθερη όταν κινείσαι στο περιβάλλον (platform στιλ) ενώ όταν βάζεις τα όπλα η κάμερα γίνεται πιο "third person shooter" με αποτέλεσμα να σε βοηθάει πάρα πολυ. Επίσης μένουν έκπληκτοι με τα animations και το πόσο ρεαλιστικά κινείται ο Drake και πόσο μεγάλο και καλοδουλεμένο είναι το περιβάλλον. Τώρα τα προηγούμενα από το Joystik δε ξέρω... :mad: Θα μας τρελάνουν.. :banghead::banghead:

Συνέντευξη από άνθρωπο της ND εξηγώντας διάφορα σχετικά με το παιχνίδι. Αυτό που μου έμεινε από το video είναι ότι η ND προσπαθεί να φτιάξει ένα παιχνίδι με φιλοσοφία ταινίας γι αυτό και δίνει έμφαση πολύ στην υπόθεση,στην πλοκή κλπ κλπ και στο ότι θέλουν να δώσουν στο κοινό ένα παιχνίδι που θα μπορεί αυτός που παίζει να το παίξει με τον τρόπο που θέλει. Δείτε το και εσείς εξηγεί αρκετά πράγματα τεχνικά περισσότερο αλλά και για το story και το παιχνίδι γενικότερα... Αξίζει να το δείτε.

Παιδιά το στάδιο της κριτικής, όσο δύσκολο και να 'ναι λόγω του όταν το βλέπεις απλά παθαίνεις κάτι, πρέπει να φύγει από το στάδιο των γραφικών και των animations μιας εκεί το Uncharted απλά ΔΕΝ ΠΙΑΝΕΤΑΙ και να πάει σε άλλα όπως το story, ο χειρισμός, το ΑΙ κλπ. Στην ιστορία από ότι φαίνεται η ND δίνει πολύ βάση έχοντας φιλοσοφία κινηματογραφικής ταινίας και αν διορθωθούν κάποια μικροπροβληματάκια που υποτίθεται ότι έχει και αναφέρει το Joystik θα είναι ένας από τους καλύτερους τίτλους που θα κυκλοφορήσουν φέτος το χειμώνα...

Καλά το στόρυ δεν είναι αυτό σίγουρα :p :p Μπαίνει στο αεροπλάνο για να πάει στη ζούγκλα για να ψάξει στοιχεια και τον θησαυρό κάποιου εξερευνητή προπάππου του. Όμως εκεί που πάει δεν είναι έρημη ζουγκλίτσα έχει πειρατές και ιστορίες χαλάει κ το αεροπλάνο πεφτουνε γίνεται πανικός με λίγα λόγια. Τέσπα εγώ έχω εμπιστοσύνη στην ND. Btw κάπου είχε πάρει παλιά το μάτι μου ότι έχει πολλές περιοχές που λαμβάνει χώρα το παιχνίδι. Κάπου είχα δει και για ένα υποβρύχιο. :rofl: Θα το ψάξω και θα σου κάνω post αν είναι γιατί δεν θυμάμαι σίγουρα... :p

"We specifically didn't want [Uncharted: Drake's Fortune] to be a launch title," developer Naughty Dog, the creator of Jak & Daxter, has unsurprisingly revealed. Uncharted's ambitious visuals and animation tap into PS3's power to a degree that probably would not have been possible had it been crammed into PS3's launch day line-up.

"We wanted time to really understand the hardware," explains Evan Wells, co-president at Naughty Dog. This understanding has been heavily assisted by the close relationship between Naughty Dog and fellow Sony dev, Insomniac - creator of Resistance: Fall of Man.

"Games have become so complex now that it's great to have this close friend in a developer like Insomniac," Evan continues, "we talk probably once every three or four weeks about something or other".

Ημερομηνία κυκλοφορίας για το Uncharted : 20 Νοεμβρίου για Αμερική!


Uncharted: Drake's Fortune will be released on 20th November in the US and is still down for release this Christmas in Europe.

That's according to game director Amy Hennig, addressing the world (well, Ellie) earlier today in Croatia, and confirms the date carried by US retailers.

Uncharted, which is developed by the Jak & Daxter scribes at Naughty Dog, puts players on the path of the fabled treasure of El Dorado, and is seen as one of Sony's key PS3 exclusives in the run-up to Christmas.

Hennig also told journalists that the game is "about a week" away from going beta internally, which bodes well for its prospect of getting out the door in two months' time.

Εχει το καλυτερο animation χαρακτηρα παιχνιδιου που εχω δει ποτε.
(αντε μαζι με το αλογο απο το SOTC).

Το μονο αρνητικο ειναι οτι δειχνει καποιες φορες να γλυστραει ενω προχωρα,αλλα μην τα θελουμε και ολα δικα μας:p

Nαι, νομίζω ότι οι όποιες ενστάσεις υπάρχουν είναι στο θέμα του χειρισμού και της κίνησης του Drake.

Ένα παιδί που το έπαιξε στο GC της Γερμανίας μου είπε ότι παίζει καλύτερα απ΄ότι φαίνεται όμως.

Τώρα αν τελικά μας απογοητεύσει και η NaughtyDog ε τι να πω... είναι να αυτοκτονήσει κανείς! :p

Ενα απο τα στοιχεια που εκαναν το Τοmb raider 1 να ξεχωριζει(και να αποτελει για μενα επαναστατικο τιτλο) το 1996 ηταν το τρομερο για την εποχη animation της Lara,λετε να γινει το ιδιο και τωρα με το Uncharted?:p

Δεν κατάλαβα... το λένε στο video, δεν ήθελαν να κάνουν ένα σκοτεινό παιχνίδι, έδωσαν χρώμα και "υπερβολή" γιατί ήθελαν να είναι έτσι.

Κάτι ανάλογο λένε και για το halo... (βέβαια εκεί το αποτέλεσμα είναι πλέον σχεδόν αστείο για εμένα προσωπικά.)

Evan Wells-Co-President, Naughty Dog: Hey there everybody! Wanted to let you know that we hit Beta on Sunday, September 16th! That’s a huge milestone and it means we’re one step closer to finishing Uncharted. The team really pulled together to help achieve this deadline and we couldn’t be more excited about the progress we’ve made. Finally, most everything is in the game and we are just chasing down the last bugs and making a few minor balancing tweaks here and there.

We’ve had our last major focus test week last week too, and we received the data we need to make sure that the gameplay is finely tuned for our final release. This is a process that we take very seriously here at Naughty Dog and something we’ve been doing since the Crash Bandicoot days. We test the game over the course of a week and track a huge number of statistics from the types of weapons used, the amount of time spent in each area, and the number of times the players died. We then use this data to smooth out the difficulty and fix any puzzles or layouts that are too tricky to figure out. This will be the fourth time we do a full focus test like this and we are actually going to squeeze a final mini test in right before we Gold Master to make sure a bug didn’t creep in to mess up our tuning.

It’s also at this stage that a bunch of people in the office who have been so busy making the game, finally get a chance to sit down and play it. A lot of people have been so heads down that they are discovering areas in the game they’d never seen before. And because the cinematics are usually some of the last elements that go in, most people haven’t really seen the story unfold in its entirety. Our own Naughty Dogs make great gameplay testers too!

So we have a little less than 4 weeks to go now, but our bug count is actually shrinking instead of growing. There are going to be a lot of late nights ahead of us, but we’re finally seeing the light at the end of the tunnel. And as a sign that we’re almost launching, the official game website has gone up - Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune.

Naughty Dog president Evan Wells says Uncharted: Drake's Fortune is just about done. Which is good news, partly because it's a promising PS3 game that's not being delayed, mostly because I was about the only person at TGS who didn't get to play it and get their rainbow-coloured, individual-toed socks blown off. The good news doesn't stop there: Wells also rolls up his sleeves, trawls through the comments on the post and decides that due to fan feedback they'd go ahead and implement 1080i support, where previously they'd only been gunning for 720p. Swell gesture!

Though the holiday release season is nearly half over, Sony still has a handful of big titles up its sleeve slated to hit this year. Naughty Dog's first PlayStation 3 title, Uncharted: Drake's Fortune, could turn out to not only be the best PS3 title of the season, but the best all year. Its mix of action and adventure looks like it was ripped straight out of an Indiana Jones film, and the game looks tighter and tighter every time we see it.


Thanks to the game's blending technology, different animations can be run together to create more lifelike reactions to the goings-on. For instance, if you shoot someone in the hip, he could hold his side while running for cover, or limp away if shot in the leg. The enemies react a little more realistically now as well, taking cover and getting out of fire if you blanket the area with bullets.
The scenery in all of these areas looks fantastic, and is both starkly different than the outdoor sections that we'd seen before while also perfectly matching the look and feel of the island. Naughty Dog's art team is at the top of their game here, as is the technical department for getting so many whiz-bang rendering features running so smoothly.
Of note is that Uncharted will indeed support the DualShock 3 and its rumble functionality. We tried out a prototype version of the controller with the game and the tactical feedback added a lot to the gunfire and overall experience, proof that Sony finally did the right thing by adding it to the Sixaxis' base functionality.
There are a whole slew of different types of unlockables that you'll be able to snag, including behind-the-scenes footage, artwork, additional costumes and even other playable characters (though Nathan will still appear in the cutscenes). You'll also be able to unlock different rendering modes, like a black and white mode, a sepia-toned mode, a next-gen filter (with appropriate super bloom and saturated colors) and even a mode that doesn't utilize textures, allowing you to see how the geometry was put together more easily.Και μερικές εικόνες...

Naughty Dog co-president Evan Wells has said that Uncharted: Drake's Fortune will probably be released here in early December, with a demo due out before launch.

Speaking on the comments section of his latest official Sony blog update (http://blog.us.playstation.com/2007/10/03/uncharted-drakes-fortune-update/), Wells wrote: "In regards to the UK release date, I believe its December 7th. We're doing simultaneous localisation in 13 languages...and should be released in all territories within 3 weeks of each other."

In answer to queries about the demo, he said: "Yes, we will be creating a downloadable demo for the PSN. We don't have a final date on when it will be up, but it will be before our release date." By that he presumably means the US release date of 20th November.

Even more heart-lifting was one of Wells' later comments, where he thanked everyone for chipping in to the discussion before explaining that - having read arguments about including 1080i support - the team had gone away and added it on top of the native 720p support. "[i]t was brought to my attention the number of people who had HDTVs but would not be able to experience Uncharted in high-def," he told the audience. "So we immediately went to work and I'm pleased to announce here, for the first time, that we have now implemented 1080 support!" He went on to say that the game runs at 30 frames-per-second.

- They're still optimizing the frame rate, will end up running at constant 30 fps. Sometimes it goes up to 45 fps with all effects on, but they aim at constant 30 fps as already mentioned. Less than 30 fps is considered a bug.

- All textures have been drawn, there are no scanned textures. That's why it looks somewhat cartoony.

- Jetski level has 6 million polygons + water reflection + refraction + bump mapping + jitter + shadows + a good number of characters + physics + AI + volumetric explosions + etc

- It should take 12 hours to complete.

- The AI will learn your behavior and react accordingly. Experienced gamers will have a hard time. They're proud of the AI.

- There are no scripted events when you fight with the AI. You'll never see the same situation twice (to some extent, of course).

- No auto-aim.

- The effects still aren't final. They'll improve close to the very end of the project for optimization's sake.

- There's a lot of stuff we haven't seen yet. It's like a movie where a lot of things happen, and it will have lots of varied action: shooting, fighting, platforming, puzzles, enigmas, races, treasure hunting ("you'll be finding things"), etc.

- Real time HDR lighting: if there's a sunset, everything on screen will have a reddish tone. Everything will be real time.

- 720p allows better geometry. We might not see anything better than Uncharted geometry-wise at 1080p.

- PS3 devkits let them know all the game stats when they're developing it (duh): GPU load, texture memory, level memory, shadow memory, buffers, how is streaming affected, frame rate, etc.

- "I love the AI. The fact that it learns from the player's actions and that it adjusts the difficulty itself is awesomenage. We haven't even exploited half of what the Cell can do. Besides the CPU power, we've got the GPUs (sic) inside the PS3, where you can send some tasks to spare Cell from "digesting" them, so that you get more free CPU time. PS3 still has a lot of untapped power."

- They didn't have the time to include a co-op mode and getting the game finished in November. Tons of ideas left out of it, might make it to Uncharted 2. (This is usual in game development)

- Nathan Drake has 3000 animations.

- Real time cutscenes, no prerendered stuff. It's all real time, in-engine.

Exclusive in-depth on-foot and vehicle impressions, video and screens. Last Thursday at around 2:00, we felt a strange sense of relief. This wasn't your standard Thursday afternoon meetings-are-done-for-the-day nap time relief, but the kind that only comes when something you've been worrying about for a long time improves. In this case, it was the confirmation that Uncharted (http://www.1up.com/do/gameOverview?cId=3150522)'s gunplay is no longer silly and awkward.

In previous press showings, the game seemed to be fighting its animation system. Enemies would recoil when shot and not be able to take a second or third hit until they finished an animation, and the game seemed to want to show off how smooth its platforming animation was at the expense of responsive controls, somewhat like the original Prince of Persia games.

Now, we're not saying this issue has completely disappeared. There are still instances where the character physics will feel a bit off as you move around the environments, or you'll jump straight up instead of forward like you intended, but the important stuff -- the hand-to-hand combat and gunplay -- is so much better than it was that we're ready to make bold hyperbolic statements about the game's potential (later in the article, anyway).

The secondary relief about having the controls working well is it gives us a chance to focus on the rest of the game -- specifically, the vehicle stages where players take on a jeep and a jet ski. We had a chance to play through these to get a sense of how they mix up the standard on-foot gameplay, and they seem to do a nice (but brief) job there.
The jeep level is one of the prettiest stages we've seen in a PS3 game to date. You take the turret on the back instead of the driver's seat, so the section is on-rails, with the game shifting your view from the back to the side of the vehicle over the course of the level. At any given point you have a small cone field of view where you can aim.

While the lighting is great in much of Uncharted, it's especially notable here, as the sun beams down through the trees while you fly by -- and you knock over some of those trees in the process. Also, unlike in many games, where the developers put in so much effort to create a vehicle segment that they feel the need to reuse it a few times, Naughty Dog tells us there will only be one jeep level in the game.

There will be other vehicle levels, though. In two parts of the game, you'll hop on a wave runner -- this time as both the driver and the gunner, as you maneuver through canals like any water racing game as Drake and control Elena with a grenade launcher on the back seat by pulling the camera angle in and aiming. In the first jet ski scene, the game forces you to take things at a very slow pace, picking off enemies off in the distance once you spot them (which you usually do by driving until you notice they are shooting at you, then stopping and firing), and though we didn't get to try the second segment, Naughty Dog tells us it will be much faster-paced.

Though entertaining, the vehicle segments look to be short breaks in the action rather than a central part of the game à la something like Halo. It's the treasure hunting story and on-foot sections of Uncharted that will make or break the game, and from the little we've seen on the story and the lot we've played of the on-foot parts, it's all looking extremely promising. There's a level of detail here not seen in most games. Look closely at the cut-scenes and how Drake's hand perfectly wraps around the steering wheel, or how lifelike the facial expressions are and how characters interact with each other, and you'll realize how much attention was paid to the details most titles skip.

While games like Resistance and Ratchet have come close, Uncharted has the most potential we've seen yet to be PS3's first true breakout game. We're not sure it will be that game, since there's plenty of story and pacing stuff we haven't seen yet (and Drake himself still seems to be spending too much time in the mirror), but it has moments that reach and hit that bar already, so it's really up to the rest of the game to see if it can match that quality.

The jungle environments look amazing in this game. Just a new video, much like the Seadoo/Jetski video...... but prettier!

Edit: I REALLY like how you can shoot down the trees in some parts and the way the plants move if you watch closely.. the enemies ATVs move the bigger plants around, the animations are very cool.

Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune Update - AI & Animation


As one of the programmers on Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune (http://www.us.playstation.com/Uncharted/) I’d like to give you some insight into the development process in creating the game’s characters.

We are a very small team creating the enemies here at Naughty Dog (http://www.naughtydog.com/). Therefore we needed to be smart about how we approach creating the characters and deciding where to spend our time. We have some very talented animators here and that was something we wanted to leverage when trying to make the characters come to life.

The final AI in Uncharted is simple, yet also very powerful. We are heavily utilizing the Cell architecture (http://electronics.howstuffworks.com/playstation-three1.htm) to allow the enemies to be more aware of their surroundings. On top of this, the AI is highly configurable to allow the designers to create custom behaviors. Examples of this are combat distance used for close-combat/ranged enemies, likelihood of moving and reaction times, grenade throwing and shooting styles. The goal was to make the AI ’seem’ smart. If we could do so without making the code complex, that would be great. The approach we took to this was to use animations to add variations to our characters instead of trying to programmatically add complex behaviors.

Halfway through development of Uncharted I sat down with the animator for the enemies (yes, only one animator) and played the game. We wanted to see what the player sees the enemies do the most because those would be the areas in which we wanted to focus our energy. We found that enemies getting hit and dying made up a large portion, and a fun one. Other areas were enemies entering combat, attacking from cover positions and, what we call, open combat - enemies standing in the open shooting at you.

Knowing this, we went to work. We wanted to give the player a rich experience by being selective in which areas to add variety. I’m pleased to say that the main enemies, pirates and mercenaries, have hundreds of animation variations in these areas. All of this makes the game experience richer and avoids repetition.

This, together with endless hours of fine tuning, resulted in the smooth and believable characters in Uncharted.

Right now we are in the process of making the final disc. Pretty much everyone is playing the game - not because we have to, but because we want to. People are trying to find all the treasures in the game or beat it on every difficulty level, which is not an easy task. I find it amazing that after working on the game for this long we all still really enjoy getting immersed in the story of Uncharted.

I hope you all will enjoy Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune as much as we do.

Uncharted: Drake's Fortune is undoubtedly one of the key games for Sony's PlayStation 3 this holiday season. GameSpot AU caught up with Naughty Dog copresident Evan Wells on a recent trip down to Australia and quizzed him on what the experience was like working on a next-generation console, how much of the Cell's processing power is being used, and whether the team is happy with the game being compared to the Tomb Raider series.


GameSpot AU: Uncharted: Drake's Fortune is now complete, right? How long was the development process overall?
Evan Wells: Yes, we just went gold last week. We were in full production for two years, and we had a small staff of five or six engineers working for about a year before that.


GS AU: What was the dev process like for the PlayStation 3?
EW: It was really exciting. We were thrilled at the opportunity to work on what I feel is the most powerful hardware out there right now and to do something that was brand-new and different. We could have certainly taken the easy route and made another Jak and Daxter game, but we didn't feel that would really push us to achieve something that was fresh and interesting.


GS AU: So why did you decide to introduce a brand-new IP now instead of creating another Jak and Daxter or Crash Bandicoot?
EW: It really is the motivational factor partly, and also because we develop a franchise to really take advantage of the hardware we're making it for. And we felt that with Jak and Daxter--the way we were doing it on a PlayStation 2--was engineered to take advantage of the PS2. We were stylised with our characters because of the limitations of the hardware. We felt on the PS3 it was time to go fully armed and on to human characters set in the modern day.


GS AU: How much more work is required for a PS3 game as opposed to a PS2 game?
EW: The first game out of the box here was a tough one. I think it was hard for everybody to make the transition from last-gen to this generation. The leap was much larger I think than from PS1 to PS2 in terms of technology, and to wrap your head around multiple processors and pixel shaders--it really was just a whole new way of developing games. But now that we've got our IP established and we have our game engine completed, we're moving pretty rapidly now. We can create, I would say, nearly as fast as we could on the PS2 with maybe 30 to 40 percent increase in staff.


GS AU: How much of the PS3's processing power is being used in Uncharted then?
EW: We were just profiling it not too long ago as we were wrapping up production. As far as the Cell processor is concerned, we're actually using about a third to half of that right now, so there's still a bit of untapped potential there.


GS AU: You mentioned more realism in graphics. How important is that to an overall game experience?
EW: Details are what makes the game. They aren't just details--they're what creates the experience, even if they're just subconscious. Those things, even if they aren't hitting you over the head, you're still feeling them. That's what we were trying to do with Uncharted--to immerse you in this experience and make you feel like you're starring in a big-budget summer blockbuster. Now the quality of the graphics has risen to the level that you can feel like you're blurring that line and feel like you're in a movie.


GS AU: Do you think gamers notice these little graphical touches?
EW: As I was saying, maybe they're not consciously noticing them, but maybe subconsciously noticing them--not only the graphical details, but the way the character controls and feels. Even if they're not overt, they're subtly making a strong impression on the overall experience.


GS AU: Apart from better graphics, what has the PS3 allowed you to do that you haven't been able to before?
EW: I would say [the] number one thing is animation, and the fact that the Cell processor has so much raw horsepower that you could just throw more and more at it and it doesn't break a sweat. Our animation system is very complex, and we layer on dozens of frames of animation so you have that fluidity of movement where Nathan Drake can be running across a courtyard, stumbling over a rock as he's ducking under a hail of gunfire, reloading his weapon and rolling into cover, and all of these animations can happen simultaneously.


GS AU: Uncharted has so far drawn a lot of comparisons with the Tomb Raider series. Are you happy with those?
EW: I completely understand them, just because this is a genre which is not that widely used in video games for whatever reason--people tend to focus more on science fiction. This more-realistic, treasure-hunting, pulp action adventure genre really hasn't been tried by that many. So I think just by the very fact that both Nathan Drake and Lara Croft are treasure hunters, there will be comparisons. But beyond that, they diverge pretty rapidly. From a character standpoint, Nathan Drake is an everyman who struggles to get by, who you can see on his face that he's stressed out as he's flinching from bullets ricocheting off the cover he's hiding behind, while Lara is the more stone-faced acrobat, perfect landing every time. And then the gameplay, obviously we were very focused on third-person cover-based play, while theirs is more auto-aiming and a little more heavy on the puzzle-solving.


GS AU: We understand the team actually surfed forums a bit and implemented some gamer feedback into the final game. Is that right?
EW: That is correct. One of the most noticeable ones was just a few weeks ago, I had put a blog entry up on the US PlayStation blog, and I got a bunch of responses asking me about the resolutions we support. Up until that day, we were only supporting 720p and it never really crossed our minds to support anything else. In the US, we have this issue where a lot of early adopters with HDTVs have TVs that only support 1080i. So if you have a TV that supports 1080i and the game only supports 720p, the PS3 will default to 480p, which isn't even high-def and is not the way Uncharted should be experienced. So they brought that to my attention--I mean, it was kind of embarrassing that we didn't know that before--and literally within the hour we had 1080i support up to take care of all those people.


GS AU: What are your expectations for Uncharted? Do you think it will make as much as an impact as your previous games?
EW: I really don't have a good idea of what to expect. I'm really proud of what we've accomplished, and I think the team has done an amazing job. Two years in development may not seem like a short amount of time, but we really did pull it off in a short amount of time. So far, all the previews and the anticipation on the forums have been there, so I'm cautiously optimistic.


GS AU: So can we expect to see more of Nathan Drake?
EW: I hope so. We really developed the game to be a franchise. We've picked the pulp action adventure genre partly because it lends itself to serialisation and episodic content. Part of the storyline involves searching out some of the lost treasures of Sir Francis Drake, and there's a lot more treasure out there to be found.


GS AU: So can you tell us what's next on Naughty Dog's agenda?
EW: I wish I could. But we're still focused on finishing this game up, so we don't have that much in place to roll on to the next one. The next order of business is to get back home and knuckle down and figure out what we're going to do.

PALGN recently had a chance to meet with Evan Wells, the co-president for Naughty Dog. Evan was in Australia promoting Naughty Dog's latest title and their PlayStation 3 debut Uncharted: Drake's Fortune. Below is the first part of the interview with Evan where PALGN talks to him about Uncharted: Drake's Fortune. We also ask Evan how far Naughty Dog pushed the PlayStation 3 and find out why it is his wife is holding her bladder. PALGN: Can you tell us why Uncharted is only possible on the PlayStation 3?

EW: There are a few things. Primarily the whole experience is enabled by the use of the hard drive. If we did not have the hard drive then we could not present the game in the seamless load free way that we are. After you start until you turn the console off and go eat your lunch and come back there is not going to be another load time and you can play the game from start to finish. That was really key to us something that we established with Jak and Daxter and it keeps you immersed in the experience. As soon as you hit those load screens, as soon as you have to take that break, you may put the controller down, you may do something else we really just want to engross you in this experience. So, the hard drive really helped with that. The other thing that we've got going for us is the Blu Ray. We filled that thing up to 24 plus gigs, it was right at the end where we were literally running out of place where we were having to start pulling some stuff out, we ended up fortunately finding this unused cache of audio lines we were able to pull out to save some space so we could get everything in that we wanted to get in. I'm not going to stand here and say it would have been impossible to do on DVD but it would have been a different game, it really would have. It could have looked worse, we would have had to make concessions in terms of our compression. We would have had to spend a lot more developer resources focusing on how to get it on the disk when we could have been creating the game, making it more fun, making it more beautiful. So I'm really happy just to have that. We're still on single layer and this is our first game out of the gates. So I highly suspect that on our future games we'll even go to a double layer and we're going to even start putting more than 24-25 gigs into a single game.

The other important thing for us was the use of the Cell processor and how it enabled our animation system to work. Everybody who is working on the PlayStation 3 or the Xbox 360 gets this increase in the number of polygons they can use, they get an increase in the fact that now we've got these really cool pixel shaders and we can do these really cool materials like water and leather and put bark on trees. So you're going to get an immediate upgrade for free and you just get it with the hardware. But, what's not going to come for free is your animation and you're animation if you've got these really detailed environments it's not going to mesh. We wanted to put a lot of our engineering effort into making sure that we had an animation system that would allow, what I think are some of the most talented animators in the industry to really create and have their vision come through and be supported by the technology.

Basically, in Jak I we had somewhere in the vicinity of 300-350 animations for Jak and everyone was really happy with the fluidity of his movement and the response. In Uncharted, Drake has got more than 3500 animations and the difference is we're now taking the cell processor and we're taking say two dozen of those animations, like we've got his running animations, flinching animations, reloading animations, rolling animations, just dozens of animations all at once being layered on top of each other and then the cell processor recreates on the fly the single frame of animation that you need to be able to play the game at that moment and the fact we can just dump more and more work on that processor and its SPUs just means we can free up our CPU to do more general purpose tasks.
PALGN: So if you had to make an estimation how much % of the power of the PlayStation 3 do you think you used?

EW: Okay well it's not going to be an exact science but it's interesting that you bring the question up because we just recently before I came here as we were wrapping up production, we did do some profiling of the performance of the PlayStation 3. As far as the Cell processor and the SPU's are concerned we were only using about 1/3 to 1/2 of the SPU's at one time and so there is still quite a bit more we can do, I was also comparing where we're at at the end of development for Uncharted compared to where we were at the end of development for Jak and Daxter and we've been able to do so much more with the PlayStation 3 and there's still so much more on top potential. "It’s not often that we can jump up in joy and say that we were right about something, but today Amy Henning has confirmed our punt on the Official Playstation blog about when the Uncharted demo hits.

If you remember our previous story from last week, we unearthed a statement from Evan Wells, the co-president of Naughty Dog, saying the demo for their upcoming game will probably be coming twelve days before release and we were convinced:

'As far as we are concerned, an Uncharted demo will be out 12 days before the American release…so in about 2 weeks! We can’t wait to get on down with Nathan Drake (uh, perhaps the wrong choice of words) on November 8th (at least on the US Playstation Store). Exciting stuff aye?'

Today PSU received the official review kit and press release for Naughty Dog's Uncharted: Drakes Fortune. Normally when publishers send us games, they're just basic game boxes, but with Uncharted: Drakes Fortune, this is no ordinary press kit.

When I opened the FedEx box this morning, I was amazed to find more than just a game; what I found was a diary. The diary of Sir Francis Drake (and a press release). Inside this book, I found a slew of journaled writings, maps, data discs, and a post card with holes to decode secret messages.

The beginning of the Diary starts with The Chronicles of Sir Francis Drake, and his life story. Then after a few pages, the diary ends, leaving a secret compartment for all of Nathan Drake's findings and his own diary.

Furthermore, Sony was kind enough to not only send us a review copy of the game, but also a sample of Uncharted's OST, composed by Greg Edmonson. Also on the OST is a hip hop track entitled " Uncharted: The El Dorado Megamix" performed by DJ Shadow.

Yup, the new demo for Uncharted Drake's (http://www.n4g.com/ps3/News-81864.aspx) Fortune seems to run only on U.S console regarding new post on Neogaf (http://www.n4g.com/ps3/News-81864.aspx) forums. PS3 are freezing with a black screen or they ask you to insert a disc.
Maybe it's just a bug, who knows ?

Here there is one post illustrating the problem
"The people complaining about the two problems (blank screen, insert game disc), do you have a PAL system? I'm wondering if somehow there's something messed up there."

H SONY μας την εκανε παλι. Οπως θα ξερετε ολοι ως τωρα το demo ηταν τελικα region locked. Γι αυτο οσοι δεν το εχουν κατεβασει καλυτερα να μη το κανουν. Τσαμπα κοπος.
Η δικαιολογια τους ειναι οτι δεν το δοκιμασαν σε pal μηχανημα για το δουν. Ναι μας επεισαν.
Μετα απο την παγκοσμια κατακραβγη ειπαν οτι θα το διορθωσουν λιαν συντομως.

Sony Confirms Uncharted Demo Region Locking - Naughty Dog Working On Fix

The Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune demo recently released on the US PSN Store is sadly not playable on PS3’s outside of that region, as it appears to be region locked. At first, the official response from Sony was disconcerting, stating those in Europe and Japan should wait for the demo to be on their store.

However, a follow up response was issued on Sony’s official blog (http://blog.us.playstation.com/2007/11/08/uncharted-drakes-fortune-demo-update/#comment-30460) a few hours ago by Sam Thompson, the line producer on Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune, confirming what most of us already knew.

The error being experienced by those attempting to play the demo outside the US is indeed due to region locking, but it was not intentional. Naughty Dog has been made aware of the issue, and Sam promises to report back to everyone tomorrow with an update. The official comment can be viewed below.

This is great news, because when you’re met with a black screen after spending over an hour to download a demo which you’ve been looking forward to play, you are certainly not going to be walking away with a smile on your face.

Ok finished the demo. Now I was 100% hype for this game so it could only go down for me. All I got to say is WOW, ND managed to meet my expectations and more like some humoristic moments when one of the baddies gets down on this belly and shoots me in the face.... lol great fcking moments with this game. Its awesome.

The Graphics... You never really appreciate the shadows until you actually play the game. Holy sh*t. Fking shadows are unbelievable. And the water... oh my the water... I cant stop thinking about how you get can partially wet. Its so realistic. The move of the leaves everything it's just pure quality.

The sound is also outstanding. I love the wise remarks Drake makes. It just makes you feel you're watching a movie.

This game is tough. Damn pirates always flank you and throw those darn granades to smoke you out. Had me swinging like a monkey from cover to cover and dying like I was playing an old school sidescroller. The controls were so much better than I expected. Those damn previews that mentioned "gunplay feels a bit off" had me worried. Also the clipping was barely noticable, damn you f*ckers for making me think it had bad clipping.Επίσης από ότι είδα το Uncharted παίζει και σε 1080p! (λογικά με κάποιο upscale?)

ηρεμιστικα χρειαζομαι για να μην ξεκινησω πολεμο κατα της σονυ ....το περιμεναμε σαν λαλακες και τελικα φαγαμε το μεγα αγγουρι....ελεοσ...

Τουλαχιστον ειπαν οτι θα βγαλουν fix update παλι καλα που δεν ειναι σαν την MS που τα κλειδωνει οσα εχουν βια,Bioshock,strangleholde kλπ...

είχαμε το προβληματικό pes2008,την καθυστέρηση του gt5 και mgs4,τώρα μας κλειδώνουν και τα demo!

γειά σου σε sony με τις λαλακίες σου! συνέχισε την καλή δουλειά μέχρι να πάρεις τον ****..αν δεν τον έχεις πάρει ήδη.:rofl:

Εγω θα ελεγα να μην κρινουμε τοσο πολυ την sony απο ενα λαθος που εκανα σε demo.Πιστευω οτι θα το φτιαξουν κ δεν θα υπαρξει προβλημα στα επομενα demo που θα βγαλουν.Αν σκεφτεις οτι η ms δεν θα το κανει αυτο δλδ δεν προκειτε λογο του οτι εχουν μαζεψει παρα πολλα 11-15χρονα ετσι κλειδωνουν τα demo για να μην εχουν προβληματα.Οπως πχ στην Γερμανια.Ας ελπισουμε να μην ακολουθησει τον ιδιο δρομο κ η sony.

Παιδιά για να μην παρεξηγούνται πράγματα γιατί πολλά ειπώθηκαν... Κατά πάσα πιθανότητα ήταν όντως κάποιο bug που δε προέβλεψαν και απ' ότι είπαν και οι ίδιοι θα το φτιάξουν! Η ND έκανε κατά πως φαίνεται "φάουλ" αλλά δεν έχω κανένα πρόβλημα να τους το συγχωρέσω ως μη γενόμενο από αυτά που ακούω και διαβάζω για το demo...

Uncharted is due out on the 19th of November in America, with a European release of December the 7th. As a result SCEE will be waiting for a couple of weeks before releasing the demo to the EU Store, in order to maximise profitability.

Παιδιά γιατί τέτοιο μπινελίκομα; Είσαστε αμερικάνοι και δεν το κατάλαβα; Στο US Store δε βγήκε το demo; Αν έβγαινε στο ευρωπαϊκό και δεν έπαιζε να καταλάβαινα. Αλλά τώρα; Να κράζουμε για τα σωστά (βλ pro) εντάξει. Αλλά να κράζουμε για το οτιδήποτε και ας μην είναι ακριβώς "λάθος" ε όχι! Δε φτάνει που με τις μούφες έχουμε τη δυνατότητα να έχουμε 150 διαφορετικούς λογαριασμούς, να κράζουμε και γιατί δεν παίζει ο usa στην ελλάδα ήμαρτον! Υπομονή θέλει. Μην τρελαινόμαστε κιόλας!

Όχι, δεν πειράχτηκα. Για κάποιο λόγο θα το έβγαλαν μόνο στο us. Τι να κάνουμε; Όταν βγει και ευρώπη θα παίξω. Μη μας πιάνει μανία. Ένα demo είναι και αυτό. Τόσα games κυκλοφορούν. Δε θα πάθουμε και τίποτα.:)

σιγουρα δεν με πιανει μανια,απλως ξενερωσα επειδη εχω ακουσει τα καλυτερα για το παιχνιδι,και οπως να ναι θα ηθελα να το λιωσω,that's it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ευρώπη έρχεται 7 Δεκέμβρη αν δε κάνω λάθος... Ελπίζω να μην είναι region locked το παιχνίδι και να το κάνουμε import από Αμερική!
