Zipper: MAG only achievable on PS3

Posted on July 16th, 2008 at 15:17 EDT
During an interview with Gamespot (http://uk.gamespot.com/ps3/action/mag/media.html?sid=6194223&autoplay=6194223), Zipper Interactive lead designer Andy Beaudoin revealed that when the team set out to develop MAG (Massive Action Game), they wanted to develop something that would only be achievable on the PlayStation 3.

“Obviously, with PlayStation 3 we’ve got a lot more power we can tap into to try to create different games, so we sat down and tried to figure out how we could take a lot of the shooter experience we had… and create a game that was going to be unrivaled,” said Beaudion. “Basically one that could only be done on the PlayStation 3."

So far, there has yet to be a game to support 256-player combat without being an MMO. From the looks of it, MAG looks to revolutionize the third person squad action genre. For more on MAG, stay right here on PSU.

MAG could be available as early as Spring 2009 (http://www.ps3fanboy.com/2008/07/17/mag-could-be-available-as-early-as-spring-2009/)

http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.ps3fanboy.com/media/2008/07/dsc_0034mag.jpg (http://www.eurogamer.net/article.php?article_id=189351)
Eurogamer had a long chat with David Reeves at the SCEE event yesterday, and discussed Europe's "day and date" releases for the PS3's upcoming library for the rest of the year. He also mentions the 2009 lineup, mentioned that "coming in spring will be inFamous (http://www.ps3fanboy.com/tag/infamous) and MAG (http://www.ps3fanboy.com/tag/mag), and God of War [3] will be coming later in 2009," giving a vague indication of when we can expect to see the newly announced MAG. Something that wasn't mentioned at the Sony Press Conference (http://www.ps3fanboy.com/2008/07/15/ps3-fanboy-live-from-sonys-e308-press-conference/).

With inFamous, MAG and God of War 3 all appearing in 2009, the year is shaping up quite nicely. But will they all really make it? And will MAG really launch with such a ridiculous name as Massive Action Game? We'll find out in a year.

It’s not hard to imagine that Sony knew Microsoft would choose E3 to make its curtain-call announcement of Final Fantasy XIII for the 360. It’s likewise reasonable to believe they searched their catalog of works under development for the best candidate to generate any buzz. What we got was a mixed bag — the trailer of an incredibly expansive shooter, but it didn’t even have a title. It was just MAG: Massive Action Game (http://kotaku.com/5025532/ps3-massive-action-game-announced-promises-battles-up-to-256-players). It sounded tempting, but very incomplete.

In fact it was shown to a focus group less than a month before E3. One among that group, after seeing the MAG E3 debut, reached out to me, under a promise of anonymity, to describe what was shown and asked of the group. Put simply, MAG — whatever title it comes out under — will be a mercenary combat MMO. It will more than likely carry SOCOM branding, as Zipper Interactive is behind it. And if so, it could be called SOCOM: Shadow War or SOCOM: Zero.
For purposes of identity protection, my source, who has experience in other video game focus groups, will be called Orange. Being identified could cost Orange, and others, future work.

“They gave us six options for taglines at the end,” said Orange, who could only remember four: MAG: Shadow War; MAG: Zero; MAG: Global Assault and MAG: Final Hour. Orange said the group liked Shadow War and Zero. Orange reasoned that Zipper Interactive's involvement means all signs would point to a repurposing of SOCOM IP for this one, rather than creating a new title outright. Indeed, when providing me visual examples of certain factions that he observed, Orange used images from SOCOM 3.
“We were all deliberating what sort of game it was similar to, and for the most part, SOCOM and Planetside (another Sony title) were the only names that came out, based on what we have heard and seen,” Orange said. The group members saw, or was described, gameplay but could not perform it themselves, which indicated it was in a far less complete stage than other games for which Orange had been in a focus group. All the group saw was a “touched up” version of the trailer that ran at E3, Orange said. Then they were asked questions, mostly regarding the game’s story and the scope of its battles.

SOCOM and Planetside were the closest cousins, Orange said, because the game involves “troop like gameplay with a 3rd person view. The game is set following catstrophic events in the near future — “2015 to 2020, around there,” said Orange — in which mercenaries, aligned with certain factions, are engaged in relentless secret wars for control of resources.

Orange saw three factions — Americans, based in Alaska (“I can assume a snow level,” Orange joked) Europeans and a Middle East faction. Orange provided two .jpgs from SOCOM 3 that were close analogues to the MAG Europe and Middle East factions. If Sony chooses to go forward like this, the obvious Middle East motif could cause some PR problems (although, “It was a black American soldier they showed us, if that makes up for it.”) To Anglo players, that kind of garb clearly says “terrorist,” and not mercenaries, especially considering the regular fatigues and high-tech suits worn by Americans and Europeans, respectively.
Orange said the presenters focused on two topics: Whether the story justifying the state of current events in the game was believable enough for gamers, and whether the scale of combat was appealing. MAG is promising multiplayer battles of up to 256 participants, broken down into 8-member units aligned to one of two sides. There will be no third-party intercessions on any battles, Orange said.

“For MAG they were all about scale,” Orange said. “That was the word they were going for. Massive (as in the scale of the level). With 256 players, they don’t want it to be a clusterfuck of deathmatch. They want vast levels where troops can approach from all angles.”
At that scale, you can be an independent operator assigned to one unit, knowing none of the others on your side, or you can gather up to seven of your friends and jump in as a squad, with other participants added in if your unit totals less than eight. Obviously, it’s not obligating you to find 127 of your closest friends if you want to see the largest scale of combat MAG will offer.

That said, mission objectives for these battles will definitely be in the hands of a few human players. We’ve reported on the concept of ranks in MAG, where players accumulate experience and ascend a shot-calling ladder within the game, such that they are either grunts, lieutenants, or generals in charge of the whole operation. You’ll ascend in rank according to a points accrual system that Orange was able to describe loosely.
“When they were describing it, it kept reminding me of Alterac Valley from World of Warcraft, if you are familiar,” Orange said. “What happens is: You get points for contributing with your troop/overall team. If you happen to win or do better than the rest of your team, you get more points. So the more you play, or the more points you get, the higher your rank goes.”

Some speculated/wished that at high command levels, the game moved back into some sort of top-down/RTS interface. That sort of happens. “Everyone is in the field,” Orange said, “but the person in charge is capable of looking at the map and commanding the overall group or individual troops. He is also capable of things like airstrikes and parachute drops. He could either control and babysit from far back, or jump right into the action [with a weapon himself.]”
Orange didn’t like the fact another human player could set all the mission parameters. “Why would I want someone telling me how to play the game?” Orange said. “Perhaps I know more about the certain terrain than they do, should they have the ability to penalize me if I don’t listen? Granted, penalizing and kicking were not mentioned but they’re always a possiblity.

While Orange did not see individual character classes or their abilities demonstrated, Orange came away with the understanding that all units could be comprised of a single class if they desired. Also, once a character achieved a certain point ranking, certain options became customizable, such as appearance and equipment/weaponry upgrades.
In all, Orange described an appealing game, and it’s a logical progression from MMOs set in fantasy contexts. After all, there are, at least for narrative purposes, kingdoms and heads of state in those worlds too, and adventurers set off on individual quests and find combat there. Given a good enough story to set it up, what should preclude that kind of experience in the modern world?

First look at MAG

Recently we had the incredible opportunity to share with you a first look for the MAG project at the SCEA E3 Press Conference. We’re thrilled with the early responses from everyone and have been amazed at all the creative speculation about the game. If you haven’t seen the news (http://kotaku.com/5025532/ps3-massive-action-game-announced-promises-battles-up-to-256-players), MAG is a new online shooter coming in 2009 where up to 256 players wage battles as 8-person squads in a new and unique World. You can watch the press event here (http://e3.g4tv.com/e32008/press_conf_detail.aspx?pressconference_key=4) or download it from the PLAYSTATION Store (http://www.us.playstation.com/PS3/Store).

Though it’s early to talk in depth about MAG, we can definitely quell some fears we’ve already heard from you about how MAG will need to compromise on gameplay to support its size. Well, it may be massive but it is an action shooter at its core. You can run around and shoot enemies, throw grenades, and drive vehicles just like any other shooter except with MAG you’ll do it with up to 256 players. The team at Zipper was one of the pioneers of online gaming on consoles with the SOCOM franchise and they’ve used this knowledge to create a brand new server architecture to make an original game like MAG possible.

Here’s a sneak peak from one of our internal play sessions:

We’re anxious to talk more about MAG and all its features as soon as we can. Until then, stay tuned to the PlayStation blog for more details and official news.

MAG E3 trailer analysis (http://thatgamingsite.com/?p=348)

Jul 25th, 2008 by Jamie S (http://thatgamingsite.com/?author=3)

Hey, we here at That Gaming Site have took it upon ourselves to watch through the MAG E3 trailer again and again until we are dam sure we didn’t missed a thing, but heck we probably still did. Ok so we all know what MAG is and if not click here (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Massive_Action_Game). Before we start we want to state that this is all speculation, some may be right some may be wrong, but this is everything we have gained from the trailer. We used the Gametrailers (http://www.gametrailers.com/player/36560.html) video to analyse, so if you want to follow please do.
The first thing we noticed was in the 20 seconds in. We noticed that there was three logo’s.
http://thatgamingsite.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/07/windowslivewritermage3traileranalysis-143femag-teams-thumb.jpg (http://thatgamingsite.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/07/windowslivewritermage3traileranalysis-143femag-teams-2.jpg)The logo’s each had a different name and picture. In order from top to bottom they say. Hammer, Swes (this was hard to make out so forgive us if we are wrong) and Raven. We believe these to be the teams that you can play as. This then leads us onto thinking that there could well be three teams on the battlefield rather than two. We are not sure how the numbers would work but each team would have 85 players with one left over. The following added to our suspicion, when team Raven was selected.
After this team was selected a map of Europe came up. This was around the 22nd second.
http://thatgamingsite.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/07/windowslivewritermage3traileranalysis-143femag-console-command-thumb.jpg (http://thatgamingsite.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/07/windowslivewritermage3traileranalysis-143femag-console-command-2.jpg)
You can see five dots on the map. All based in what looks like the following countries, left to right. Spain, Belgium, Switzerland, Egypt, Russia and Kazakhstan… Its nice. There could be more than these 5 maps but that is what we can see for now. Once again this suspicion is confirmed a little more when Kazakhstan is selected and the screen loads with the Raven logo over a black screen… Its nice.
You can see that on the right hand side of the map there are three icons. One is a vehicle, seems like a jeep with a mounted gun on the back, similar to the one from Warhawk. This could well be the transport you use to get into the game. Other ways of getting in are through planes. Another take on this could be the 8 band group you end up in. You may be able to select the group you end up in.
Underneath that is a solider. This could well be all your customizations of your character. Underneath that is a weapon. This could be the class of your character. It looks like a sniper has been selected at the moment?
Now this one is very interesting and has gotten us very excited.
http://thatgamingsite.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/07/windowslivewritermage3traileranalysis-143femag-officer-in-charge-thumb.jpg (http://thatgamingsite.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/07/windowslivewritermage3traileranalysis-143femag-officer-in-charge-2.jpg)
You see what it says? This was at the beginning of the chain of command for the teams. Could there well be a number one in charge? Would this work by selecting the most experienced. This would be a great function if it is and opens a lot of possibilities. Will the officer in charge be the one creating the objectives. Will there be a big meeting before where the officer speaks to all the Platoon leaders. The ranking system doesn’t stop there though. It goes Officer in charge, Platoon Leader, Squad leader and then Squad members. Squad members seems to be the lowest of the ranks.
This next one is a bit of topic but made me chuckle. This player has the
http://thatgamingsite.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/07/windowslivewritermage3traileranalysis-143femag-flange-thumb.jpg (http://thatgamingsite.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/07/windowslivewritermage3traileranalysis-143femag-flange-2.jpg)name FLANGE. Have a look on Urban Dictionary (http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=flange) for the meaning of this.
At 1.02 seconds an interface pops up, named command view. On this you see arrows pointing
http://thatgamingsite.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/07/windowslivewritermage3traileranalysis-143femag-command-view-thumb.jpg (http://thatgamingsite.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/07/windowslivewritermage3traileranalysis-143femag-command-view-2.jpg)
at certain parts of the map. This seems to be the objectives that each group is going towards. A nice touch, not sure how it will work out. Will each group have a different interface. On this same picture you can see who is fighting. Raven vs Swes. This is important to know because it now gives us an idea of what region they are from. Raven are more from the western side of the world where as Swes are from the eastern. Swes look Russian, which is a coincidence as the map is in a Russian area.

http://thatgamingsite.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/07/windowslivewritermage3traileranalysis-143femag-auto-torret-thumb.jpg (http://thatgamingsite.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/07/windowslivewritermage3traileranalysis-143femag-auto-torret-2.jpg)At 1.12 you can see an interesting feature. This seems to be an automated turret. We could be wrong and there could be somebody underneath(inside the building) controlling this but it doesn’t look that way. This turret fires missiles and bullets.

Next up is at 1.38. You can see that the character has multiple weapons. An automatic and a rocket launcher. Will you be able to pick up other peoples weapons when they die, switching them with your own?
It seems there just may be custom cloths for your soldier. Throughout this video we have noticed two types of heads. One with a visor helmet and with a helmet and goggles. That is just what we noticed here but there will hopefully be more.
Moving on to 2.01 you see that a turret gets destroyed by a plane missile.
http://thatgamingsite.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/07/windowslivewritermage3traileranalysis-143femag-plane-thumb-1.jpg (http://thatgamingsite.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/07/windowslivewritermage3traileranalysis-143femag-plane-4.jpg)
Does this mean that you could call in an air strike?
Well that concludes our analysis of this trailer. If we missed anything please say and the same if you think we got anything wrong.http://thatgamingsite.com/?p=348

One of Sony’s biggest announcements at E3 this year was the unveiling of MAG. Titled Massive Action Game the game is set to submerge players into large maps capable of holding two hundred and fifty six players all at once. That’s over four times the current 60 player limit that only a hand full of multiplayer games feature. While the game looked impressive from an animation stand point gamers know not to trust CGI, and to wait for in-game footage to be released. As I watched the MAG debut trailer a spinoff concept of this title stirred my mind, and after a few days of laying around in the back of my head I’ve decided to lay it out as a concept idea to see what reactions I receive from others.

The idea has no real name so for now I’ll title it FPSM (First Person Shooter MMO). The game takes a similar approach to MAG in terms of having numerous players interacting all at once, but in a more MMO stand point. The game consist of three factions, a full world rendered map, and an FPS experience beyond anything you have yet to get your hands on. Fasten your seat belts, and switch on your imagination because this concept idea is one of the most ambitious yet to pop out of my head.

Brief note: This article will be focused on the concept of a First Person MMO rather than the actual game I have in mind.

FPSM: What is it? What is it about?
FPSM as I’ve already noted is an MMO in a first person perspective. Instead of having multiple servers, and levels the game is one large map consisting of different factions battling for land. Every action make in the world not only affects you, but your faction as a whole. The game will be one of the first to bring a developing story to a multiplayer first person shooter, and would change the way gamers engage in battle. As you play with your faction your wins, and losses will be shown through the world map outlining what areas are hostiles, and what are conquered by your nation. If you lost a vital piece of land then it’s your factions duties to get it back. In FPSM you work together as a faction, but the system also allows different individuals to stand out from the crowds.

How would the map work?
The map would be the size of a typical MMO. In this case the world map could span hundreds of miles. This allows numerous battlefields to occur at the same time, and provides more than enough room for expansions if needed. The biggest difference between FPSM and all other multiplayer games is that everything occurs on one server. This means no loading times, and the ability to travel from one battlefield to another without exiting servers or loading a whole new round. FPSM can be imagined as one massive PvP sever. NPCs would assist in training and tutorials, but the battlefield is one massive human blood bath! A large MMO map supplies developers with the chance of creating a variety of different environments. These environments can range from jungles to desert plains to even urban settings providing a favorite setting for each gamer. Does MAG seem so massive now?

How would the factions work?
Factions in FPSM would function like any other MMO. Different factions would have their own types of guns, assets, and style. For example the Russian may use a more aggressive style while the Americans would be more tactical. Each faction would have their own home base in which they chat with others, and play activities outside of the battlefield. Need a drink? Go to the bar. Want to practice your head shots? Try out the range. The home base also allows you to meet up with friends and join together before heading out into a hostile battlefield.
Character Customization and level upgrading
If their is one feature gamers like the most it is being able to distinct themselves from one another. IN FPSM players should have the ability to customize their character however they wish. All MMO’s have this feature making it only vital that FPSM follows the tradition. Customizations can range from clothes, gear, and even tattoos because after all we all want to look bad ass on the battlefield.
The level system would evaluate your performance on the battlefield to determine how many XP points you receive. After every level up you would be awarded with a higher rank as well as unlocking new guns. Long term upgrades are a must in a MMO. These upgrades could range from becoming a squad leader or earning your pilot’s badge allowing you to fly planes. This will keep the First Person Shooter experience intact but bring MMO character elements into the mix.

The Battlefield
This is the most crucial element of the game, and without it the whole concept would be an epic failure. Battlefields would operate like regular first person shooters, but on a much larger scale. The battlefields could range from any size as it all depends on how many soldiers decide to load out. Send an entire division or go more covert, and send a special operations squad. Each battlefield would have their own objectives, and goals in order to gain territory. One of the best elements of a FPS MMO would be the ability to physically move assets and reinforcements from one area to another. Having a hard time with the enemy in Africa? Try sending in an armored convoy from Europe along with air support. Are the hostiles pushing you back too far? Send a Commando unit behind enemies’ lines to infiltrate their systems. The battlefield is progressive and constantly changing with each battle giving you the player the ability to change the story line.
Conclusion
In the end FPSM has a lot of potential if executed correctly, but then again I must remind readers, and myself that this is a concept idea by myself, and is not in development. Putting that aside the image of being able to have a dynamic world in which massive factions compete for global domination in an MMO perspective can be a whole new breakthrough in gaming as a whole. Who knows maybe one day these two genres will fuse together to create a Massive Action Game beyond our beliefs, but until then we will just have to stick to our current concept of first person shooters.
