Time Line: Final Fantasy VII

From Advent Children to Dirge of Cerberus, here's everything you need to know about FFVII - in chronological order!

So who is this dark-haired hero, star of Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII? Recognize him from the original Final Fantasy VII? Remember him from that shiny movie, Advent Children? No?
Well then, you’ve been missing out on Square Enix’s Final Fantasy VII Compilation, a series of games and movies that serve as a sort of official fanfiction for the beloved Final Fantasy VII.
The Final Fantasy VII Compilation was first conceived by Square Enix as a way to shift the company towards "polymorphic content." What that means is that Square wants to cash in on FFVII’s enormous popularity without having to 1) remake the game for the PS3 or 2) make an actual sequel (hey, we all saw what happened with FF X-2).
At first, the idea was to create a gorgeous CGI film and a prequel game that could only be played on Japanese cell phones. But somewhere around the twentieth plot twist, it occurred to Square that two spin-offs weren’t enough to cover the entire scope of Final Fantasy VII’s moody, techno-punk world - so they made more spin-offs and another animated feature.
In all, there are five games, two animated features and some random literary works that make up the compilation and round out the backstory of Final Fantasy VII. In case you’re not clear on how these sanctioned spin-offs fit into the FFVII world, we've came up with this handy timeline to help you out.

1) Kingdom Hearts (PS2, 2002 - ? years before FFVII)
What?! That’s not part of the compilation. Wait, did Squall say something about Cloud being born in Hollow Bastion? Never mind. Moving on…

2) Before Crisis: FFVII (Cell phone)

Before Crisis: FFVII is set six years before the start of Final Fantasy VII. At this point in the story, the monolithic Shinra Corporation has just wrapped up its war with the nation of Wutai and has a monopoly on mako, the energy that powers

all its cool technopunk technology. An insurgent organization called AVALANCHE starts to rebel against Shinra, and the Turks - a shadowy group of elite agents in smart business suits - are called upon to put down the rebellion. At this point, AVALACHE is a bunch of no-names (the cool people don't join up until FFVII), but Tseng the Turk is around, and the game introduces a couple of original characters that appear in other compilation sections.
Through a series of downloadable episodes, the game’s story runs up until the starting point of FFVII, and it raises more questions than it answers about FFVII’s plot.

3) Crisis Core: FFVII (PSP, 2008 - 5 years and 1 year before FFVII)
Here’s where you can get your plot fix. Instead of starring second-tier characters, all our FFVII favorites are to the fore of the events of the game: Sephiroth, Cloud, Aerith, etc. The story covers most of the events that take place immediately before FFVII starts, as well as laying some groundwork for how Shinra’s mako obsession goes downhill. We can’t tell you too much more about the plot just yet (be sure to keep your eyes peeled for our review later this month), but we appeal to your sense of logic:

In this picture, we see the game’s main character, Zack Fair, holding the iconic huge sword that Cloud carries in FFVII. Now, logically, that sword has to wind up with Cloud and Zack has to magically disappear before FFVII starts. So while we won't actually tell you what happens (Wikipedia will (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crisis_Core)), we can tell you that there’s a 99.9999 percent chance that Crisis Core will end in tears.

4) Last Order: FFVII (Animated feature, 2004 - days(?) before FFVII)
Available in the US only on the Advent Children Collector’s Edition DVD, this animated feature is an OVA (original video animation) meant to act as a prequel to VII and a companion to Crisis Core. Narrated by Tseng the Turk, the story goes back and forth between two flashbacks of things that happen during Crisis Core and are referenced in VII. The first takes place five years before VII starts, when Sephiroth goes nuts and trashes the town of Nibelheim. Sephiroth also kills Tifa Lockhart’s father (as if we need another reason to hate him) and Zack and Cloud are there too. The second flashback occurs just before VII starts, and features Cloud and Zack fleeing Shinra.
If you can’t be bothered to play Crisis Core (what’s wrong with you?), then this is your best shot for filling in the (huge) plot holes of FFVII.

5) Final Fantasy VII (PSOne, 1997 - Current)
We all know what happens - rock falls, everybody dies.

6) On the Way to Smile (Novella, 2005 - 1 year after FFVII)
Okay, so not everybody dies. This literary gem is supposed to preemptively fill in plot holes for Advent Children as well as tie up any loose ends left over from VII. The novella appeared in the pages of V-Jump magazine and on the official Japanese website for Advent Children in 2005. It’s made up of three side-stories told by Denzel (the orphan boy featured in Advent Children), Tifa and Barret that sort of tell a “where are they now” story for the surviving FFVII characters. It also explains how the Lifestream saves Midgar after Sephiroth's meteor falls.
So if you can read Japanese or find a good translation, or plan on buying the Advent Children art book, you’ll have a much better idea of what the hell is going on in Advent Children than if you just watched it cold, like most Americans.

7) Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children (Animated feature, 2005 - 2 years after FFVII)
Let’s not mince words: this is a CGI acid trip. Forget the plot - it’s just a lot of Cloud angsting about Aerith being dead, Tifa angsting about Cloud missing Aerith, and some stuff about mako baptism. Sephiroth is somehow back from the dead and… yeah, stuff blows up. It’s pretty:

8) Reminiscence of Final Fantasy VII (Story digest, 2005 - 3 years after FFVII)
Reminiscence is technically an animated feature because it’s made up of clips from the original Final Fantasy VII and some shots of locations from Advent Children. It's basically a highlights of FFVII piece instead of a stand alone plot supplement. You can watch all three parts by clicking the links below:

9) Dirge of Cerberus: FFVII (PS2, 2006 - 3 years after FFVII)
Dirge of Cerberus takes place three years after the events of FFVII. A bunch of high-powered SOLDIER units that have been trapped under the ruins of Midgar show up and start wrecking shop, trying to find a weapon called Omega. The game stars Vincent Valentine, in all his androgynous vampire glory, as the man these new SOLDIER units are hunting in order to harvest his "protomaterial," which will somehow awaken Omega and bring about the end of Midgar (for real, this time).
This game offers some (but not many) insights into the motives behind Shinra’s warmongering and explains Vincent’s backstory (because he didn’t get enough in VII).

10) Dirge of Cerberus: Lost Episode: FFVII (Cell phone, 2006 - 3 years after FFVII)
The Lost Episode takes place between two events that occur toward the end of Dirge of Cerberus. Nothing really happens plot-wise in this game, which makes sense because it’s an addendum to the PS2 game and only available on cell phones.
The Lost Episode is generally thought of as Vincent fanservice instead of FFVII canon.

11) Kingdom Hearts I and II (PS2, 2006 - ? years after FFVII)
Here it is again: the ultimate wrench in FFVII continuity. Somehow, according to a character from a different Final Fantasy game, our heroes are born here and somehow - as you can clearly see below - they wind up here when they die.

Conclusion: Disney = Lifestream.
