New fighting game from the makers of Guilty Gear (http://games.ign.com/articles/847/847960p1.html)

You have to be somewhat of an old time gamer to remember that Arc System Works was once the savior of 2D gaming, delivering high resolution sprites through the Guilty Gear series while its competitors stuck with legacy 320x240 art.

Years later, and it looks like we can finally look forward to another jump in resolution for 2D fighting game visuals. The latest Famitsu has a first report on Blaze Blue, which looks like a new Guilty Gear title, except that it runs in wide screen and at HD-level resolutions.

Blaze Blue is being produced by Guilty Gear producer Toshimichi Mori. Aside from that, and a similar art style, it doesn't appear to have anything to do with Guilty Gear.

The game features an all original cast, with Famitsu introducing three characters: Laguna, Jin, and Noel. Based on these three, it seems that the game's cast will have varying weapons. Laguna carries a broad sword, in contrast with the dual guns wielded by Noel.

Gameplay makes use of four buttons. In addition to buttons for weak, medium and strong attack, you have an EX button which makes your character perform unique special attacks. The fighting system is based around players being able to continue combos when opponents are in a down state. On the defensive side, you'll have a number of ways of getting back up when downed, so you don't get pummeled by combo attacks.

Currently being designed for arcade release through Taito's Type X2 board, the game's visuals aren't actually pure 2D. The fighters themselves are hand drawn 2D sprites, but they're placed atop 3D backdrops. Based on the screenshots in Famitsu, the different dimensions appear to blend together well, although we'll have to see the game on the big screen for ourselves to be sure.

We'll get that chance in just a couple of weeks. Blaze Blue will be going playable at the AOU 2008 arcade show on the 15th in Japan.

With Street Fighter IV, and now this, AOU is going to be heaven for fighting game fanatics.
