Street Fighter IV and both Bionic Commando titles for GDC

The arcade build of Street Fighter IV - the same as that being shown at this week’s AOU show in Japan - is to be shown at GDC next week, VG247 can confirm. The game will be playable.

In addition, both the 3D, next-gen remake Bionic Commando and the anticipated XBLA remake Bionic Commando Rearmed are to be shown. The former will be demoed, but will not be playable. The latter is likely to be playable, but hasn’t been confirmed just yet.

Ninja theory Heavenly sword 2 or new IP artwork?

"
http://www.ripten.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/02/ninja-theory-next-gen-project-2-2-coptitleimagey.jpg
At least we presume the artwork is for a Heavenly Sword sequel, since Ninja Theory has stated that it is a three game series. Have a gander at the High-res artwork after the jump.
Ninja Theory’s website has been updated with a more mature and darker look, along with news of their next project:

Right now we’re working on an exciting new concept that has got everyone we talk to buzzing. We can’t say a lot except that it’s going to be great to work on and should be even better to play!
It’ll take all the things we loved about Heavenly Sword and make them bigger and better than ever before.
With such a strong Playstation 3 engine and vision for their Heavenly Sword project, could this be artwork for an exciting sequel set in a future post-apocalyptic time? A time that might be waiting for the immortal Heavenly Sword to save its people? Or does the concept art suggest a completely new IP? "

Geomerics Enlighten engine GDC 2008 demonstration

The video released by Geomeric to the public at GDC 2008 has given gamers a look into an entirely new world of lighting through radiosity. The video below has a run time of roughly 2:40 and will give you an in-depth look at how radiosity can bring an entirely new emotion and feel to certain scenes. According to Geomeric, this new Enlighten engine is easily applicable for developers and can certainly bring out the best in emotional driven games like Resident Evil (http://www.psu.com/Geomerics-Enlighten-engine-GDC-2008-demonstration--a0002800-p0.php#) or an epic role-playing game.

Without much else to say, here is the video in all its glory.

GDC: Logitech announces official Gran Turismo wheel for PS3

Today at the Game Developer’s Conference (GDC), held in San Francisco, USA, Logitech (SWX: LOGN) (NASDAQ: LOGI), the world’s leading developer of force feedback gaming wheels, announced the Logitech® Driving Force™ GT racing wheel, the official wheel of Gran Turismo™. Featuring powerful force feedback and an innovative 24-position real-time adjustment dial for on-the-fly control of brake bias, traction and damper settings, the Logitech Driving Force GT gives gamers the most accurate and authentic PLAYSTATION®3 (PS3™) racing experience.
“We’re excited to be working with Polyphony Digital again to deliver a wheel that will satisfy the needs of car enthusiasts, like me, around the world,” said Ruben Mookerjee, Logitech’s director of product marketing for gaming. “People who love the striking realism of the Gran Turismo racing series will discover that Logitech’s latest wheel will allow them to experience the cars the way they were meant to be driven. With the Logitech Driving Force GT, you’re not playing games anymore – you’re racing!”
Logitech’s latest racing wheel was meticulously designed by Logitech and Polyphony Digital, Inc., the developer of the Gran Turismo series. The companies worked together to add the unique real-time adjustment dial, a first for force feedback wheels, allowing people to fine tune the car’s balance by adjusting the brake bias, traction control and damper settings. Now Gran Turismo drivers can have precise control over the car’s setup to achieve maximum performance.
“We have always designed the Gran Turismo series for driving enthusiasts. Realistic graphics, a technologically advanced physics engine and authentic sounds for every car in the game make Gran Turismo 5 Prologue a true driving simulator,” said Kazunori Yamauchi of Polyphony Digital. “Now, with the Logitech Driving Force GT wheel, drivers can have unparalleled control of their car, extending the realistic racing experience.”

Logitech’s newest force feedback wheel simulates understeer, oversteer, and traction loss with frightening accuracy. While the full-size gas and brake pedals deliver precise throttle and brake response, racers can use either the sequential stick shift or the wheel-mounted paddles to race through gears. The wheel also features a large 11-inch wheel with rubber-overmould rim, providing exceptional comfort and control.

The Logitech Driving Force GT turns 900 degrees lock-to-lock allowing drivers to navigate hairpin turns with greater accuracy. And with anti-backlash gearing, there is no slack in the steering response, making any race a smooth, realistic experience. In the centre of the 11-inch wheel, the Driving Force GT features an illuminated horn button with the official Gran Turismo logo. Using the authentic sounds of the car being driven, racers can quickly alert other cars when they are approaching fast. Or when playing online, people can simply use the horn to taunt other players as they speed by.

The Logitech Driving Force GT wheel is engineered for use with Gran Turismo 5 Prologue on PS3, which will be available on Blu-ray Disc™ (BD) and as a download on the PLAYSTATION®Network in North America on April 17 and in Europe on March 28. The Logitech Driving Force GT wheel is also compatible with Gran Turismo™3 and Gran Turismo™4 on the PlayStation®2 computer entertainment system.Πηγή: http://business.maktoob.com/News-20070423141453-Logitech_unveils_official_wheel_of_gran_turismo_fo r_playstation_3.aspx

Quietly unveiled at yesterday's PSN session was PhyreEngine, a new "free to use graphics engine" from Sony Computer Entertainment. According to the presentation, the package includes full documentation, "70+ samples" and "full source code and artwork" of sample game templates. Working on both OpenGL and Direct3D, this engine will allow developers to more easily develop for the PS3 by using PC environments they're more familiar with. A "simple recompile" is supposedly all that's needed to make the game run on the PS3. Sony is promising "ongoing development and support" for the PhyreEngine.

The ramifications of this subdued announcement are actually quite significant. Three titles have been revealed to have used the PhyreEngine for development: flOw, GripShift and DiRT. Of those three, only one is exclusive to PlayStation. It appears that the PhyreEngine is truly cross platform -- Sony is indirectly contributing to the development of PC (and Xbox 360) games.

πολυ καλο νεο ιδιως για τους μικρους devs;)

Sex Scares Game Developers

Brenda Brathwaite, designer of games such as Wizardry, Jagged Alliance, and perhaps most notable for this story, Playboy: The Mansion, held a panel today at the Game Developers Conference boldly titled "Hentai, Hardcore, and Hotties."

It was there that the founder of the special interest group International Game Developers Association's Sex spoke to those in attendance about something that's on all of our minds... er, that is, the minds of many: "Developers are terrified of putting sex in games in case they get an AO rating, which is the kiss of death."

She admits that part of this fear is justified, due to the fact that even some games that are merely rated M won't get into the big-box retailers. "Western sex games like Leisure Suit Larry and 7 Sins didn't sell," she sighed. "And they didn't sell because they couldn't get into Best Buy, Wal-Mart, or Target. If you can't get into those three stores, you're done."

She continued by observing that the ESRB's rating system is a part of the reason due to a seeming inflexibility regarding sexual content within titles. "For example, you can make a game about safe sex for teenagers, and it would automatically get an AO rating," she preached. "There's absolutely no provision in the ratings system that says anything like, 'unless it's an educational title.'"

Of course, by now we're all familiar with the recent Mass Effect drama (and to those who aren't: Happy birthday, and welcome to the gaming fold. We hope you'll stick around awhile. Enjoy your new system), and Brathwaite admit that she was flabbergasted by the whole event.

She believes that the sexual content which lead to the drama and a banning in Singapore was perfectly acceptable, not offering anything remotely like a hardcore experience. "Why is that not OK?" she asked. "Why is that not alright? If we don't have any sex in games at all, we're going to end up with just those happy Disney games."

The issue isn't universal, however, as countries like Japan have had sexual content en masse in their games for years. "In Germany it doesn't have anything in the ratings system about sex. It's all about the violence," as neither country can understand why it's such a big deal here.

As for the God of War minigame and its accompanying controversy? She laughs, saying "if you were watching that on TV, you know with that kind of the vase wobbling on the table stuff, that would barely be a 13. Come on, that's almost Happy Days stuff."

Havok releasing core physics for free

http://www.thatvideogameblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/02/havokcompletefree2.jpg

Attention wanna-be game developers. Havok is going to make the PC version of their physics and animation software, Havok Complete, available as a free download for non-commercial use. They’re hoping that by doing this, creative game development will see a boost throughout the industry.

If whatever you cook up manages to impress Havok and Intel (Havok’s parent company), you can execute a commercial distribution license with Havok, for free.

Renee James from Intel says this move aligns well with their “ongoing strategy of putting the best software tools in the hands of PC games developers” and that Intel is very pleased to be sponsoring this direction in the PC market.

Havok’s Managing Director David O’Meara adds that this industry-changing move opens up a much broader market for Havok products, including the recently announced Havok Cloth and Havok Destruction.

Havok Complete will be available for download starting this May. Πηγή: http://www.thatvideogameblog.com/2008/02/21/havok-releasing-core-physics-for-free/

SAN FRANCISCO--In recent months, the PlayStation 3 versions of many multiplatform games have been released after their Xbox 360 counterparts--or canceled outright. Others, like Grand Theft Auto IV, have seen both versions delayed because, having optimized the game first on the 360, the developers encountered difficulties with the PS3 edition.

Though its forthcoming game, Star Wars: The Force Unleashed, started development on the Xbox 360, LucasArts' "new baseline" will be Sony's console.

"Our next project will use the PS3 as the baseline, and then apply that to the Xbox 360," said Haden Blackman, project lead for Star Wars: The Force Unleashed.

After some hard-learned lessons in developing The Force Unleashed, LucasArts now has a strategy for future multiplatform titles: develop the PS3 version first.

The new game was demoed for first time in public by the developer -- which almost made a new KOTOR instead.

PS3 is "the best platform" for small devs

Scott Steinberg, Sony Computer Entertainment America's VP of product marketing, has told GamesIndustry.biz that he believes the PlayStation 3 is the smart choice for any small developer wanting to get their games to an online audience.

Responding to the Microsoft keynote at the Game Developers Conference, Steinberg pointed to the section of the talk from Chris Satchell on the XNA platform, and explained: "it was interesting in the sense that what they were talking about we've sort of been doing for the last couple of years with PSN and giving smaller, start-up, entrepreneurial developers the chance to get in and make their games available on the PSN."

He went on to note that the online services for the PlayStation 3 were free to consumers, whereas to experience full functionality on the Xbox 360 users were required to pay for a Gold membership.

"We don't charge for our online service," he said. "We make it available for everybody. So, the accessibility of somebody's content who decides to make a game that is maybe smaller, more affordable for consumers to buy – I think we're a better choice because the PS3 owner has the ability to go online day one without having to cut a check.

"I think on a global basis, the PS3 brand is going to be the winner. I think the story is already written in Europe and in Japan. In the US it is sort of a 'jump ball' that is remaining, but quite candidly I think if a small, start-up company wanted to have global access to their content, and have global commercial potential for their content, Sony is by far the best platform."

Steinberg also went on to say that, in the scheme of things - taking into account the ten year plan for the PS3 - he believed that Sony could be very confident about the forthcoming year.

"The importance of 2008…We're exactly where we want to be chessboard-wise heading into 2008."

In the full interview, which is available now (http://www.gamesindustry.biz/content_page.php?aid=33414), Steinberg also touches on the Blu-ray situation and his perception of the long-term viability of physical media, as well as the PS3's software line-up for 2008.

GDC 08: White Engine renamed to Crystal Tools

Taku Murata's session at the GDC had some very interesting information: The White Engine, which is being used in Square Enix's nextgeneration PlayStation 3 title Final Fantasy XIII, has been renamed and is now called Crystal Tools.

The interesting part was when Taku Murata said some of the engine's features will work on the Wii, although, "it's a secret". Is Square Enix planning to released more titles on the Wii?

PlayStation bounces back (http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/technology/2008/02/playstation_bounces_back.html)

It was hard not to spot the optimism beaming from both Sony execs and developers about the future at the Game Developers Conference last week.
The concerns and hushed whispers at last year's GDC about whether Sony had made fatal errors with the platform's launch have given way to positivity.

Sony's Phil Harrison, head of worldwide studios, looked relaxed when I spoke with him on Thursday, although that may have been more to do with the fact he was not giving a keynote this year and was able to enjoy some of the sessions.

I had spoken to Mark Rein, of Epic, earlier in the week and he told me he had never doubted that PlayStation 3 would be anything other than a success. Of course Epic did release Unreal Tournament 3 (http://www.unrealtournament3.com/) on PS3 this week so his comments have to be seen in that light.

UT is the kind of franchise PlayStation has been crying out for - a hard core first person shooter with credibility. The Xbox has long been seen as the platform of choice for FPS fans who don't play on PC.
The 360 of course has Halo 3 and many feel that game set the benchmark for onine FPS play.

Mark Rein told me: "We've surpassed what Halo 3 offered."
I'll let you - the readers - argue over that one.
Epic are one of the finest exponents of hard core action titles and UT's availability on the PS3 before the Xbox 360 will delight Sony.
In term of what's to come for the PS3 I was given a sneak peek at titles in the works in London two weeks ago.

Unsurprisingly, sequels for the platform's biggest launch titles are in the works. Cynics will say that studios are merely fixing problems in the original versions, the result perhaps of having to rush the titles out in time for launch.
Here's what I was shown:

Motorstorm 2 is due out in time for Christmas and moves the action away from the desert locale of the original. Gamers will be able to race around a lush island environment, full of interactive vegetation.
The game will feature four-player split-screen action, righting one of the obvious failings of the first game.
The title is some months away from completion but the game's engine looked rock solid and the graphics were as impressive as one would expect from one of the best-looking racing franchises.

Resistance Fall of Man was a bit of a disappointment when it was released. The game promised much but suffered from a lack of originality and flat game design. The world the designers had created was interesting but playing in it felt dull.
So what will Resistance 2 offer? I was shown only a trailer but it's clear developers Insomniac want to make a statement. Online the game will host 60 players simultaneously.
It screams epic and tellingly it concludes with the line: "You haven't seen what we are truly capable of."
So what else was I shown? Well, I was shown a trailer for a game not due out till 2009 but was sworn to absolute secrecy. Apparently, Sony just wanted to give a glimpse of what the console will be capable of.

In fact, the game is such a secret that when I mentioned the game to Phil Harrison last week he was unsure at first whether even to admit the title existed. When I explained I had been shown it under strict Non Disclosure Agreement terms he looked relieved.
I don't mean to be a tease - all I can say is that I was left speechless.

If the footage I was shown truly is "in game", as told to me by the Sony PR people, then we could be on the brink of a step change in what games consoles are capable of in terms of story-telling and immersion.
And there I'll leave it. Feel free to speculate on what I was shown. I cannot, of course, confirm or deny what it was....
