Dark Sector Infects PS3

Resident Evil and Zelda are the two main influences for an intriguing new action game coming out later this year on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. Dark Sector promises to combine innovative weapons and crafty play techniques with a compelling puzzle-solving element, and a 'superhero origin' story that could turn Dark Sector into a big series. We recently got an advanced look at the promising game, and had the opportunity to get some details directly from the game's producer at D3 Publisher, Josh Austin.

The developer is Digital Extremes, who worked on Unreal for several years with Epic Games - creators of Gears of War. After a while, they split apart and both wanted to do singleplayer games. But Dark Sector doesn't license the popular Unreal Engine from Epic, instead opting to use its own 'Sector Engine', built specially from the ground-up by Digital Extremes, after something of a fall-out with Epic.

The story behind the Dark Sector's development is perhaps as interesting as that found in the game itself. Dark Sector was the first title to be announced for any next-gen system, way back in April 2004, so we asked Josh why it was announced so early - sometimes a strategy employed for less impressive titles that want to cash in on some early buzz and attention. "Originally when they started this title, there was no Unreal Engine 3, and it was heavily sci-fi. When they were pitching it around [to potential publishers for the game], nobody was buying it, because at the time this sci-fi theme in the game was just not working very well for them." He said that a stronger emphasis was put on the ever-popular superhero theme, and it seemed to pick up momentum again. "Then D3 Publisher picked it up two years ago, and really got it going," Josh told AOL Games.

http://games.kikizo.com/media/darksector_june07/01.jpg

"Steve Sinclair is the main visionary behind this game," Josh smiled. "He is the guy who pretty much made the code and everything. He worked on all the Unreal Games, he's one of the guys who got it running on Xbox a long time ago! And he's been working with Digital Extremes and created this Sector Engine."

Players start the game as Hayden Tenno, a morally confused CIA Agent on a mission in a fictional eastern bloc nation. "He's kind of like a Jack Bauer, if you watch 24, one of those guys that runs off on his own," Josh explained, "it's all stuff we're revealing in the story, and there's a lot of cool back story too - he's in contact with the agency until he gets infected, and the whole city starts changing around him... he's left on his own and this all affects how he grows as a character."

Hayden awakens to discover his right arm has mutated into this metallic growth - and the first thing that extends from it is your first weapon in the game - one that puts Wolverine's firmly in the shade! The glaive is a sharp-edged, three-bladed projectile that behaves like a boomerang, not dissimilar to the Windmill Shuriken used by Ryu Hayabusa in the Xbox classic Ninja Gaiden. The early parts of Dark Sector that we've seen are useful for the player to familiarise themselves with this early, but deadly weapon.

http://games.kikizo.com/media/darksector_june07/14.jpg

The glaive is also enhanced when combined with elements like fire and electricity, and a range of others yet to be revealed. The really cool thing about the game is the way these combinations allow you to solve some surprisingly imaginative puzzles to pace out the combat, and we can certainly imagine how rewarding it might feel to the player when some are accomplished.

http://games.kikizo.com/media/darksector_june07/02.jpg

Josh demonstrated this on level four: the 'monster virus' that's spreading rapidly in the game manifests itself as 'technosyde webbing' - a thick, membrane-like substance that Hayden can't break through because it's made from the same viral material as his mutated arm. But players will learn that it can be broken down with fire, and in this level, we also notice a leaking gas pipe in another area. The challenge is for the player to figure out a the puzzle: striking a nearby fuse box to gives the glaive a strong electric charge, then combining the charged glaive with the leaking pipe ignites the gas, so that the glaive is combined with fire, and then, retuning to the technosyde membrane, it can be burnt down and we can progress through the level. The membrane lets out an eerie, beast-like shriek as it's burned. This place makes us shudder! "You'll be revisiting areas, and some of the puzzles will help you later, so anything you do will be affected when you come back to it," said Josh.

Another nice touch is that the glaive is luminous, so it's like a long distance, projectile flashlight - at one stage in the demo we enter a dark, claustrophobic cave where we have no idea what may be lurking beyond, and a fling of the glowing boomerang-like glaive is not just visually brilliant to look at, but also shows whether there's anyone - or anything - we might want to watch out for.

http://games.kikizo.com/media/darksector_june07/03.jpg

Players can also 'combine' attacks together, for example by throwing the glaive down one side of a room to take out enemies, while shooting guys on the other side of the room as the glaive returns - it's a charming effect. "We have other powers that we're not talking about yet," promised Josh. "But we're not overwhelming the player with a ton of options - we're giving them enough so that they learn something new each level, as the game progresses. It's like Zelda where you get this mysterious item on one level, and then learn why it's useful on the next."

"The glaive is definitely one of those weapons we want players to run in and explore everything in the whole world - what happens if I throw it here or there... there are scenarios where you can actually target, say, a light source and then an enemy, in that order, by throwing it in a certain way. Some of the things we're playing around with are going to be a lot of fun. You can pull cover away with it, rip stuff down - there are going to be a lot of interactive elements."

From the first-hand Xbox 360 version we witnessed, there's no doubt that Dark Sector boats some of the best graphics we've seen on any console to date. Rain, lightning and some really nice effects made this dark, night-time level something very atmospheric and special, and the screenshots haven't done justice to the way this title looks in motion. When you throw your weapon through smoke, the smoke distorts convincingly according to the direction you've thrown it in. The mutated enemies are excellently detailed and there are some nicely animated death scenes whenever you take them out.

"We are using [tactical] cover in this game," says Josh. "But it's not all about cover - it's more for setting things up, looking around the environment and surveying the area, it gives you a chance to figure out what your next move is and regenerate some health." And there's no on-screen display with health status or the like - "all that stuff is on the character," Josh explains. "So if I fire the gun, there's a yellow blinking light on the side of your actual gun indicating that you're low on ammo, and it turns red if you're out of ammo. We're using indicators like these to keep the player immersed as much as possible." Similarly, he showed us, when players are taking a beating in the game, the screen will seem redder and you'll hear the character's heart pounding, while different 'pain' animations will indicate different injuries.

So the player's connection with the main character seems pretty essential - but what about interaction with other, non-playable characters in the game? We asked Josh about this to get a sense of whether the world will feel as real as in, for example, Half-Life 2 or even GTA IV. "He's evolving into a hero," explains Josh. "We've got a great character arc for him, and a some of that comes about when we you run into civilians that are going to get shot by soldiers; some of the soldiers will use civilians as bait to lure monsters out, so you're going to have an opportunity to save civilians, and they might lead you out into a black market area or give you something to pass on to get another weapon or whatever -there's going to be a lot of interaction."

http://games.kikizo.com/media/darksector_june07/04.jpg

Dark Sector will be released in October, and promises at least fifteen hours of gameplay plus a really cool multiplayer mode, according to Josh. And since it's a 'superhero origin' story, gamers can definitely expect a lot more Dark Sector after this first game, if it lives up to the high expectations we now have for it.

Pre-E3 2007: Dark Sector Hands-on
It's Resident Evil 4 meets Gears of War... seriously.

June 25, 2007 - They say that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. If that's truly the case, then the team at Canadian developer, Digital Extremes, really, really likes Gears of War. Dark Sector (http://ps3.ign.com/objects/674/674095.html) plays and feels almost exactly like it -- right down to its cinematic storytelling, control scheme and visual style. In fact, Dark Sector is so reminiscent of Gears that there's even a context-sensitive action button that powers its cover system. There's a sprinting option that comes complete with a handheld "shaky-cam" point of view as well.

"We wanted people to be able to jump right in and start playing," said Dark Sector product manager, Josh Austin. "[Epic] established a certain standard for third-person controls in their game; so while it's not an exact replica of Gears, it's familiar enough that people should be able to 'get in and go' with no problem."

http://ps3media.ign.com/ps3/image/article/799/799000/dark-sector-20070624031313926-000.jpg (http://media.ps3.ign.com/media/674/674095/img_4650291.html)
If Resident Evil 4 and Gears of War got married and had a kid, it would be Dark Sector.

Austin isn't kidding. Sitting down with the controller and playing Dark Sector is a cinch for post-Emergence Day veterans. We needed roughly a minute of acclimation to get used to Sector's faster and looser aiming, but after that it was like picking up an old friend in a new suit.

Mechanical similarities to Gears aside, Dark Sector borrows heavily from Resident Evil 4 and 3D Zelda games. The "over-the-shoulder" POV is straight out of Leon's dark adventure from 2005 (as is the aiming system) and the pacing and progressive puzzles were influenced by games like Wind Waker and Ocarina of Time. The idea here is to constantly provide players with ways in which to learn a new ability or game concept. "When you have nothing more to learn, then it probably won't be as fun," said Austin when referring to the team's overall design motto.

http://ps3media.ign.com/ps3/image/article/799/799000/dark-sector-20070624031737220-000.jpg (http://media.ps3.ign.com/media/674/674095/img_4650302.html) - Hayden Tenno, Badass

During our play-through we saw an example of Zelda-like puzzles firsthand. One section challenged us to navigate through a dilapidated building whose massive door was held shut by a biological goop. Slicing or shooting the overgrown booger was completely ineffective, so we had to find a way to burn through the disgusting grossness instead. To do so, a hidden gas main had to be uncovered from the inside of a statue, so that when we smashed a hanging light with our bad ass glaive, its electric properties would taint the weapon and ignite the flammable vapor. From there, it was just a matter of tossing our boomerang into the blaze so that we could set fire to the slime lock and move on.

Speaking of the Glaive, it's by far the most important weapon in the game and is the thing that separates Dark Sector from the titles that inspired it. Grown out of the lead character's metallic right hand, the Glaive helps players solve puzzles and destroy enemies faster than anything else in their arsenal. Not only can it be powered up with the elemental properties listed above, but it can slice enemies to ribbons as well. It even has a built-in light source to help users find their way through some of the darker areas.

http://ps3media.ign.com/ps3/image/article/799/799000/dark-sector-20070624031312551-000.jpg (http://media.ps3.ign.com/media/674/674095/img_4650293.html)The glaive isn't your only means of putting the hurt on, there are shotguns too!

With a weapon that powerful, Digital Extremes' biggest priority is to keep the game balanced. So while the rebounding blade can take out just about everything in one shot, its range is limited. You're not going to be able to accurately take guys out from several hundred yards away, and it could prove difficult to eliminate a group of enemies who are right up on your grill when completely surrounded. This is where Dark Sector's other destructive items come into play. Shotguns, machineguns, pistols, and our favorite, the sniper rifle, can all be found or purchased to supplement the glaive.

Apparently, each of Dark Sector (http://ps3.ign.com/objects/674/674095.html)'s weapons can be upgraded too. Although that function wasn't available in the E3 demo we sampled, Austin did say that users will eventually be able to advance their gun of choice and make it more powerful. But even more intriguing is the fact that players will also be able to evolve their main character, Hayden Tenno, through the additions of new super powers and abilities. Sadly, the extent of these meta-skills is still being kept under wraps.

Another big secret is what Dark Sector's storyline is truly about. While we do know that Tenno is an amoral black-ops agent sent to the fictional Eastern European town of Lasria to investigate the propagation of a deadly virus, we don't know much else. The only other bit that Digital Extremes has revealed is that when Hayden arrives in Lasria, he's attacked by an unknown assailant and is inflicted with the super germ he was there to investigate. He wakes up to discover that he's been fitted with a cybernetic arm and glaive and the story takes off from there. What has infected Hayden and why hasn't he turned into a zombie like the rest of the town's afflicted? Who is responsible for this outbreak and what can be done to stop it? Where does Tenno's new arm come from? Apparently, we won't find the answers to most of these questions and more until the very end of the game.

http://ps3media.ign.com/ps3/image/article/799/799000/dark-sector-20070624031310942-000.jpg (http://media.ps3.ign.com/media/674/674095/img_4650328.html)
The glaive is powerful on its own, but can be made even stronger via the elements.

However, we can tell you this -- if the enemy AI continues down its current path then getting to the end of Dark Sector will be easier said than done. Even in its current pre-alpha form, the game offers some surprisingly tough baddies to go head-to-head against. When combating a squad of soldiers, for example, one group may try to draw your fire while the others attempt to flank Hayden from the other direction. What's more, is that enemy snipers hang out in windows and try to pick you off and zombified townsfolk will swarm you in packs so that what they lack in speed is made up for in force. Plus, since the virus going around town affects everyone differently, you'll see multiple kinds of infected -- from the kind that blow up when ignited with fire to giant, super tough boss monstrosities than can kill your guy with little effort.

As difficult as the bad guys may be, though, we would like to see the areas a bit more populated. In the two to three levels shown in the demo, several of them were barren with occasional "enemy flag points" scattered in-between. If Digital Extremes truly wants to capture the feeling of a real "living" city, then it will need to add a little more activity to its streets. It may also be a good idea to offer a few more hints as to where players are supposed to go next -- as is the case with several games of this size, figuring out your next goal isn't always that clear.

http://ps3media.ign.com/ps3/image/article/799/799000/dark-sector-20070624031309067-000.jpg (http://media.ps3.ign.com/media/674/674095/img_4650330.html)
Though the PS3 is Sector's lead platform, all versions should be nigh-identical.

The good news, of course, is that Dark Sector won't be hitting store shelves until January 2008 at the earliest, so there's still plenty of time to tweak and add things as necessary. Oh, and another element that we can't forget is that the game will also include a multiplayer component that is said to be "extremely innovative" in its field (more on that post-E3 apparently). When combining those elements with the fact that it feels so much like Gears of War, has already-impressive visuals and boasts a "No HUD" interface, D3 could have quite the surprise hit on its hands.

Dark Sector Developer Interview στο PSU

One of the nice things about developing our own engine (Dark Sector is running on our Evolution Engine) is that we can easily plug-in new cool features like DualShock 3. We did get a heads up from Sony prior to the announcement, so I wouldn't say it was a surprise.

If every shot, grenade, step, explosion, etc... has vibration attached - the feature loses its impact. We have some incredibly terrifying and explosive moments in Dark Sector, and these are the events that we really want to punctuate with the right dose of vibration.
PSU: What is the release date for the demo on Xbox Live and PSN?

Carter: It's coming out end of December, just in time to let everyone try it out over the holidays. Πηγή: http://www.psu.com/Dark-Sector-Developer-Interview--Feature--a0001439-p0.php

Dark Sector interview with David Kudirka: no PC version and no movie adaptation

Jeux-France.com has recently interviewed David Kudirka, a former gaming journalist who is now the executive producer for Digital Extremes' Dark Sector game.

JF: Which are the elements that according to your opinion differentiate Dark Sector from other titles?

David Kudirka: First of all, what gives specificity to the game is the use of the Glaive. It is truly a unique weapon. You have to sometimes use it in combination with fire-arms, but you must also use its new capabilities, acquired during the game, in order to create new styles of combat. That changes a lot compared to a simple shooter. And as you advance through the game you'll find more weapons and more ammunition. Moreover, with the Glaive [attached to his body], the hero himself is like a weapon. So he evolves and becomes stronger, which is a very interesting element in a game that wanted to be very open.

JF: During the presentation we've seen a lot of intermediary sequences. Their proportion seemed quite important. Just to provoke you a bit, we're just tempted to say if there's any room left for gameplay between two cinematics...

DK: Your impressions are justified by the fact that you've essentially seen only the debut of the game. There are indeed a lot of cinematic sequences at this moment, because they serve the purpose of revealing the intrigue. On the other hand, and I speak in the name of the team, we hate cinematics that are too long. We don't like having to sit around and passively watch those sequences, we prefer playing. However we've had the chance of [having/benefiting from] Michael Rosenbaum's help- Lex Luthor in the Smallville series- to double Hayden's character. So it's an advantage that has allowed us to add a bit of profoundness and depth to the revelations that we make during the game for all heroes in the game.

JF: But the dramatic modifications that Hayden suffers, are they taking place during the cinematics or during the playable part?

DK: The weapons-enhancements will be available during the gameplay, while [Hayden's] personal evolution will occur during the short cinematic sequences arriving after the boss-fights.

JF: Precisely what do these modifications/evolutions refer to?

DK: First of all [the ability] to recover the Glaive, afterwards it's the capacity to use [the Glaive] to generate a force field and eventually [Hayden's capacity] to render himself invisible. [This last ability] is rather short, so he'll have to use it wisely.

JF: Also concerning what you've shown us [today]: there's one moment when Hayden is grabbed by an enemy and [the player] has to push a button [on the controller] to escape. Will there be more complicated button combinations or are we going to have to solve similar situations using a single button?

DK: We've recently changed all that. At the beginning, we had opted for increasingly complicated combinations with more and more buttons. Currently, we're back at a single button, but the more powerful the enemy will be, the shorter the time to press the button displayed on the screen will be. And every error will generate a "penalty" whose severity/intensity will depend proportionally on the strength of the adversary.

JF: During the development, which was the first element to come into focus, the action or the tactics?

DK: Definitely the action, although it's true there's a strategic part in the game too. [Hayden] can attack his enemies in different ways. We've constructed the levels so that the player which traverses them decides for himself what he/she can do to eliminate the foes in front of him. Actually, I'm sure that if you go to the same place for the second time, you'll see things differently. I've been playing this game for almost a year now and, although the [source] code hasn't changed, it always happens that [I stumble upon] a new trick, simply because I choose to do things in a different way.

JF: Have you thought of a co-op mode?

DK: Yes, but we've preferred to concentrate on the single-player mode in order to better shape Hayden's character.

JF: Is there a PC version [of the game] envisaged?

DK: Absolutely not. We do have the capacity [to come up with a PC version], but this is not something we have in mind for the moment.

JF: Is this decision linked to the fact that Dark Sector is a third-person shooter, a genre which is more popular on consoles than on PC, where we generally prefer first person shooters?

DK: I totally agree with you on that, but this is not something that we've taken into account. The most important thing for us was to depict our character in all the possible situations, whether he's ready to reload or whether he's taking cover. We've taken our time in building and polishing convincing animations, no matter the weapon [Hayden] is carrying. Or, in an FPS, [all these elements] are hidden behind the subjective perspective of [the first person] camera.

JF: Hayden would be a great character for a comics-book. Are you planning to sell the license to a publisher willing to adapt it for cartoons?

DK: It's funny that you say that, because actually we've already published a promotion comics-book in November [last year] called Dark Sector Zero and which is sort of a prologue to the game. Hayden is essentially a super-hero or us, so such adaptation would make sense.

JF: In the same manner, more and more games are made into movies. Who do you see playing Hayden's role in the future?

DK: To be frank, I haven't seen a single movie made from a video-game that's good enough to make me push Dark Sector to the big screens. But that's just my personal opinion...

Dark Sector to Have Same Look on PS3 and Xbox 360

In TheGameReviews.com's first interview with the Dark Sector development team, they got a chance (http://n4g.com/News-114627.aspx) to ask about any differences between the PS3 and 360 versions. The answer (http://n4g.com/News-114627.aspx): it will look the same on PS3 and the Xbox 360.Πηγή: http://xbox360.thegamereviews.com/story-638-Dark-Sector-to-Have-Same-Look-on-PS3-and-Xbox-360.html

Dark Sector's online features and differences

We've been a heavy supplier of Dark Sector news over the last couple of months as we have high expectations for this upcoming title from D3 Publisher, unfortunately it seems as though our online portion of the game may have some slight differences to that of the 360s. According to a press release that was sent out today, the PlayStation 3 online offerring of Dark Sector will be missing a couple of options relating to the process of starting up games. Though these differences may be only minor and very trivial, it's disappointing to know that the same product couldn't be released for both platforms. It appears that the 360 version will allow you to setup Quick, Custom, and Ranked matches, while the PS3 will only offer the ability to search and setup games. Though this is a very small difference as stated before, it is still a difference.
Outside of this, the online play will be respectfully the same and D3 has given us information in regards to the gameplay modes that will be available online.
Infection is a game mode that will place one person into the body of Hayden, while placing up to nine others into the roles of Lasrian Troopers. The purpose behind this mode is to bring Hayden down to score points. You'll be able to gain points by assisting on a kill, stunning Hayden, or just killing Hayden yourself. If you kill Hayden, the round will end and the individual who took him down will resume the identity of Hayden at the beginning of the next round. Hayden will also be given the opportunity to rack up points for each Lasrian he decimates. The object of the game is to score the most points by the end of the game.
Epidemic will be your common team deathmatch offerring into the Dark Sector world. Players will be divided into The Agency and Lasrian Troopers. Each team will also have one Hayden that is exactly like a VIP to your team. A round will end whenever Hayden from either team is killed. Points will be scored via kills/assists, while points will be taken away for suicides. It is pretty much your standard team deathmatch game mode with the exception of having a VIP on your team that you probably wouldn't like to see die.
One thing note-worthy is the fact that each game will have automatic respawns. So this will not be one of those online games that forces you to wait for the next round to start before you can start playing again.
Dark Sector is set to release on March 25 in North America and March 28 in Europe.
