Raja Koduri, the chief technology officer for graphics at AMD, said that the console makers are in the midst of their system redesigns for the next-generation. He said that they are likely to have highly specific customization requests that depend on the work loads they anticipate for games of the future. How many microprocessor threads will they need? How many operations per pixel on the graphics side? Will they target 1080p resolution? Will they want graphics and CPU on a single chip to save costs? Those are questions that Koduri said the console designers are grappling with. This time, Koduri said, the console makers may want a more consistent programming model. That means that the same kind of software could run on everything from a handheld game system to a high-end console. That’s what AMD is offering. But it’s still a long way off before we really find out what’s going on with the next generation systems.
