CES Day 1: LittleBigConvention

Greetings from Las Vegas! Today is the first full day of the Consumer Electronics Show - and if you’ve never attended (this is my first), let me just tell you - this thing is huge. CES reminds me of a Tech-themed Louvre; you can walk for an hour non-stop and never see the same thing twice.

Even with so much to see and try out, I knew exactly where I wanted to go straightaway - the LittleBigPlanet demo in the hugetastic Sony pavilion. In the video below, Kyle Shubel walks us through some new “Create” functions of the game. You may wanna pay special attention to an off-hand remark he makes towards the end of the videο.

Watching Kyle build a tree from a few simple building blocks was really inspiring, and I know that once you gamers get your hands on the full game, we’re going to see things even the designers never envisioned. Oh, and this made-for-internet video really doesn’t come close to doing the game’s visuals true justice, keep that in mind.

I’ll be checking in during the week, finding out all I can for you (thanks again for those of you who contributed to the wish list). Stay tuned to our Flickr site for updated photos, and our Crackle page where we’re sharing video with all of Sony Electronics. Here we’ll be posting videos from the various presentations and other goings on from Sony Central.

Sony Confirms In-Game XMB Sometime in ’08

Sony’s gaming division might have a small showing at this year’s CES, but that isn’t keep Paul Purdy from dropping some big PS3 news: in-game Xross Media Bar (XMB) access is confirmed for 2008. When pressed for a date or timeframe with more solidarity, the Sony rep countered with a "no further comments" and left us praying that the long-awaited feature will release sooner rather than later.Πηγή: http://ps3.thegamereviews.com/story-382-CES-2008-Sony-Confirms-InGame-XMB-Sometime-in-08.html

TN Games shows force feedback suit
News by Rob Purchese
http://www.n4g.com/M/8/News/98000/98972_hs.jpg
TN Games has been demonstrating its force feedback vest and helmet to visitors at CES.
With different versions for racing and first-person shooter titles, the idea is to make you feel gunshots, kicks, punches, acceleration, deceleration, crashes and general real-life sensations you play games to avoid.
It does this by inflating pockets of air around the body or little cells on the head to give you a jolt now and again. Quite cleverly it can inflate partially or blow air over your ears to simulate a near miss.
So far only the first-person shooter vest is available to buy for USD 169 in camouflage or tactical black colours. Currently it only works with Call of Duty 2 or TN Games title Incursion, but has Valve and id Software titles in its sights. Phew.
"This is the experience that you have been dreaming about since you started playing," claims the website (http://www.tngames.com/index.php). "Get real interactive entertainment: get your vest and start 3rd Spacing!"

Belkin FlyWire: HDMI goes wireless (http://asia.cnet.com/ces/08/0,3800010114,62036111,00.htm)

It's a common dilemma: You have the flat-panel TV perfectly placed in the living room or home theater, but the rest of your gear is located halfway across the room. You can snake a long HDMI cable around the perimeter--or you can consider something like the Belkin FlyWire. The transmitter/receiver combo lets you toggle up to six HDMI sources and wirelessly transmit audio and video--up to full 1080p--from one side of the room (your equipment rack) to the other (your big-screen TV or projector). The generous connectivity means even the biggest home theater geek will have the capacity for all of his gear--say, a PS3, Xbox 360 Elite, DVD recorder, HD-DVD player, and a home theater PC. Setup is said to be plug-and-play (the transmitter pairs with the receiver at the touch of a button), and because it's a closed system, it should be universally compatible with any HDMI source and TV. Belkin isn't specifying the range--yet--but hints that the system will work "throughout the home." On the downside, the fact that it's HDMI only means you'll need some sort of analog-to-digital converter for analog only video sources such as the Nintendo Wii (http://asia.cnet.com/reviews/home_av/others/0,39037618,39092761p,00.htm) (most newer mid- to high-end AV receivers will handle the job). Look for the FlyWire to hit US stores by summer 2008 for US$500 to US$600.

As anybody who's sick of all the of the wires hanging down from their wall-mounted TV can attest, the Belkin FlyWire is certainly a compelling idea. We just hope that the company (and partner Ammion, who's handling the chipset duties) can actually get the thing to stores as promised. Philips showed off a similar wireless HDMI kit last year (albeit with just one input, rather than six), but it has yet to see the light of day.

Video Gaming’s Hot Venue: CES Wins Full Embrace From Sony Online Entertainment (http://www.localtechwire.com/business/local_tech_wire/news/story/2290609/)

"The Agency" is the evolution of the MMO. It combines the popular shooter genre with spies. Everyone knows “Alias,” “24,” and James Bond. There’s a huge market of gamers that can’t stand fantasy games, and I think this will attract them.”

SOE is also gearing up its PlayStation 3 synergy. With Sony's selling 1.2 million PS3s during the Christmas season, Smedley said PS3 has some steam behind it now. "Free Realms" for PS3 will be released six months after the PC version, and both "The Agency" and the DC Comics game should have simultaneous PC and PS3 launches.

The PlayStation Store has opened up a lucrative new business model for SOE, which is the number two publisher of games for the PS3 digital distribution store with 10 games available. Looking ahead to this year, SOE is developing both Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy as downloadable games.

“We’re taking more time with these games because they’re perennial franchises,” said Smedley. “We’re working on tie-ins between the game and the TV show and we’re also integrating this game into PlayStation Home.”

CES 2008: Winners & Losers
Another trip to Las Vegas has gone by and we've seen a glimpse into the near and distant future of the consumer electronics industry. Clearly slim was in this year, with several manufacturers showing off concepts of super slim plasmas and LCD TVs. All very nice I think you'll agree, but what impressed us most at the show and what companies will be wishing CES had never happened?

The Winners

Pioneer: Having already walked away with our Product of the Year Award (http://www.trustedreviews.com/home/review/2007/11/29/TrustedReviews-Awards-2007/p12) for its 50in Kuro Plasma TV, it was hard to imagine Pioneer moving any higher in our estimations. However, its showing at CES this year proved this wrong. Why? Though Pioneer was one of many to show off a super slim concept TV the real talking point was its apparent mastering of zero luminance idle state technology.
In a nutshell this means that when a pixel is not in use it is completely off and as a consequence completely black, thus rendering contrast ratio irrelevant. This sounded impressive enough on paper but when seen in the flesh, well… suffice to say to it's as good as you could possibly imagine. Setup in a dark room next to a standard Kuro the prototype set performed something akin to a magic trick, disappearing like a black hole when a blank screen was displayed. When Pioneer gets this technology to consumers, it's likely to prove a giant step in home cinema image quality.

http://www.trustedreviews.com/images/article/inline/6542-BDlogoblue.jpg
Sony, Blu-ray & PS3 Owners: Just in case you've been living under a rock for the past week or two, one piece of news to come out of/around about CES was Warner Brothers' announcement that it would be ditching HD DVD and going Blu-ray exclusive. Given the power of the studio this effectively puts an end to the so called "format war", with Toshiba's HD DVD format now supported by only two major studios, Universal and Paramount.
Obviously this is a boon for Sony and those manufacturers that have supported the Blu-ray format, but PS3 owners (such as Hugo) will be rejoicing just as heartily. Though the console has struggled for market share purely as a games console it has always been recognised as a surprisingly good Blu-ray player, which could be easily updated as new standards appeared. Now that Blu-ray has (potentially-ed.) triumphed, it looks as though this feature is about to become all the more valuable.

Consumers & Retailers: Naturally enough an end to the format war is also good for both consumers and retailers. A schism of formats wasn't doing anyone any favours and creating a good deal of confusion for both parties, with consumers unable to understand the difference and retailers unable to communicate them. Thus, though things aren't quite finished yet, consumers can at least go with Blu-ray and feel a certain level of security. In addition, the HDMI Licensing LLC's (Limited Liability Corporation) decision to create a unified logo and marketing identity for the Consumer Electronic Control (CEC) feature of HDMI 1.3 should create a lot more clarity in place of the confusion created by identikit technologies manufacturers have been marketing.

The Losers

Toshiba & HD DVD: If Sony and Blu-ray were big winners then Toshiba and its HD DVD are the obvious losers. To say that the Warner Brothers move was a crushing blow is a massive understatement. Clearly the announcement took the company by complete surprise, timed perfectly to inflict maximum damage on HD DVD. One must only look at the company's reaction to understand how hard it was hit, with executives refusing to field questions at its press conference and PR people disappearing without a trace on the Monday and leaving the HD DVD booth staffed only by hired booth attendants.

http://www.trustedreviews.com/images/article/inline/6542-hddvdlogo.jpg
Consumers: You didn't think it was all win-win for the consumer, did you? So, Blu-ray has (potentially-ed.) won and the format war has ended, hooray! But, did it deserve to win? Well, to my mind, it didn't and I'm not alone. At this stage at least, HD DVD was/is the superior format. Its discs, particularly those from Warner Brothers, are better featured and cheaper, while unlike Blu-ray the standards for players and interactive features have been set in stone from the day of launch. As a result the players have been largely excellent, proving well featured, easy to use and reasonably priced. Still, if the history of this industry tells us anything it is that the best format doesn't always win - Sony knows this better than most.

Philips: While most other companies were busy talking technology and unleashing ridiculously slim or large TVs, Philips was staking a claim for the inauspicious award of "Worst Press Conference of 2008". It was a bizarre affair, with what is generally a very strong technology company speaking at length on rather woolly design concepts and aspirations. All of which is fine if you're speaking to consumers but this is a trade show attended predominantly by technology journalists who want hear about innovative technology, not the influence of women on consumer electronics purchases. Thankfully, the company does at least continue to make some great products, including the 47in LCD TV we reviewed recently (http://www.trustedreviews.com/tvs/review/2008/01/15/Philips-47PFL9632D-47in-LCD-TV/p1).

Creative: A tad harsh you might say, but hear me out. I like Creative, it makes good products. Its soundcards are still among the best consumer offerings available and it has released some great 2.0 speaker sets of late, but at CES 2008 it disappointed me. Why? Not because what it had on show wasn't good, not at all. No, it was what was missing that irked. Namely, a new hard drive based portable media player. Fine, iPods are great and so on and so forth but many, including myself, don't want to be tied to Apple, don't want to use iTunes and have been looking to Creative to provide an alternative. Unfortunately, nothing was forthcoming and we were told that it had no intention of releasing a successor to its Zen Vision:M, focussing instead on flash based players such as its own Zen. As a business decision it may well make sense, but Creative has surrendered the hard drive player market and disappointed many in the process.
