Folklore Japanese Demo Impressions

http://ps3media.ign.com/ps3/image/article/789/789088/folks-soul-the-lost-folklore-20070516064439281.jpg
Perhaps what is widely considered by many Playstation 3 owners to be the very first definitive title to purchase for their beloved system, and even more of a game that warrant’s their purchasing of said system, FolksSoul (better known as Folklore here in the U.S.) was available yesterday for download via Playstation Store in Japan. With such a big file size (1014 to be exact), one has to wonder whether or not FolksSoul was worth the download; and even more so, whether or not FolksSoul will even be worth considering. After all the beloved hype this game received due mostly to its graphics, completely full of Gothic ambiance, I can honestly say that with the exception of a few problems [of which I’m sure Game Republic may fix after all, its just a demo], FolksSoul is pretty much looking to be an action JRPG worth owning on the PS3.

The demo begins with the player opting to choose between Ellen and Keats, the game’s main characters who’ve been led to the mysterious village of Lemrick by a mysterious force. Most of the prologue and scenes in the demo are of a comic book nature; but since this is a demo, Game Republic has mentioned that those particular comic book scenes will be cinematic sequences, like Ellen and Keats receiving their powers. So for those automatically assuming these comic book scenes will be the game’s norms, you can throw that skepticism out the door. Also for the sake of the demo’s size, full voices have been removed.

The first thing anyone will notice about the game is the richly detailed graphics. Given that the game has a dark setting, the graphics in Folklore do justice to the environments around them, giving off the surrealistic dark fantasy setting the game aims to achieve. Everything from the character models to the game’s environments all give off a Gothic nature with the colors perfectly reflecting such a nature, and walking through these environments is nothing short of amazing. The atmosphere is perfectly fine. Even better, though, is the inclusion of a movable in-game camera and a good character positioning, things which Game Republic’s previous PS3 title could have easily benefited from, that allow you to better see the environments as well as the monsters in that area.
http://ps3media.ign.com/ps3/image/article/789/789088/folks-soul-the-lost-folklore-20070516065949272.jpg
After the prologue ends with Ellen and Keats receiving their powers, the demo’s fun really begins. Both Ellen and Keats can attack and defend by extracting the ID of Folks, the game’s monsters, and using them to do so. Ellen is more of the short distance fighter when she uses Folks while Keats is more of the melee fighter. Extracting the ID of Folks, which are given a face button on the PS3 controller, is done by weakening the Folks, holding the R1 button down, and pulling the SIXAXIS in an upward motion to complete the extraction; and multiple Folks’ IDs can be extracted at once, giving you this complete and total sense of satisfaction when doing so. The more of the same Folk Ellen and Keats extract, the more EXP that Folk gains which results in that Folk leveling up and increasing the amount of attacks they can do when using that Folk.

Bosses, on the other hand, are different to extract. Upon weakening a boss Folk and preparing for ID extraction, the way to go about extracting a bosses’ ID is done in a set pattern similar to reeling in a fish. When the ID is green, you leave it alone; but once the ID turns red, you immediately pull the SIXAXIS towards you and keep doing so until the little bar at the bottom is full and you’ve succeeded in extracting the ID. Like with basic Folks, boss Folks can be used for attacking, defense, or using skills/magical attacks.
http://ps3media.ign.com/ps3/image/article/789/789088/folks-soul-the-lost-folklore-20070516065950772.jpg
The demo overall is relatively short with it ending once Keats and Ellen have defeated a boss and return to the village of Lemrick. Some of the issues found in the demo were pretty trivial with the slowdowns being of a top trivial priority. Though the slowdowns aren’t as bad as the ones found in Genji: Days of the Blade, the slowdowns in FolksSoul that occur during the fights with some Folks as well as walking through environments could use some tweaking. Everything else, though, from the graphics to the game-play mechanics are executed fine. FolksSoul will be released June 21st in Japan with a U.S. version, titled Folklore, following sometime in October.

If the in-game voices are any indication (battle taunts mostly), then FolksSoul may be voiced in English with Japanese subtitles.

Joystiq impressions: Folklore

Folklore promises a hefty amount of gameplay: 40 hours to play through with both characters (and both are necessary to unlock the "combined story.") Throughout the game, additional costumes for Ellen can be unlocked, and not only do they affect her appearance, they change her abilities as well. After completing the first chapter, players can enter Dungeon Trial mode, which allows players to create a 9x9 dungeon, which can be populated with creatures and items that you've collected in the single-player adventure. These dungeons can be shared online with friends...

Folklore Impressions
(http://kotaku.com/gaming/hands_on/folklore-impressions-278616.php)

http://cache.kotaku.com/assets/resources/2007/07/folkloreimp-thumb.jpg

I've ruminated on it. Given it a couple of hours to sink in. I reserve the right to rescind my statement at any point between now and its American release. But I think Folklore might be the most beautiful game I've ever seen.
While many of you might disagree, it gets an automatic elevation in assessment by not being set in the future, nor a traditional high fantasy world. Instead each of its seven worlds—of which I saw two—are developer Game Republic's interpretation of Western fantasy ideas, with a pronounced lilt towards Celtic imagery, as filtered by English fairy tales. Like the elves with luminous skin and pink ears, haughty angular aliens, who live in each of the worlds and act as your guides. I would talk to each one in turn, even though I'd read their simple gameplay instructions already, just to see the camera zoom in on their models as they spoke.
Do you know how in older Japanese games it is common to have one really gorgeous character portrait that is referred to when someone is speaking, while the gameplay characters are usually smaller and less intricate? Imagine if someone made a game where every character model looked as good as one of those lovely manga watercolors. Because that's what Folklore looks like.
Part of what makes the art direction so sturdy are the two themes balanced against each other: stereotypical protagonists (one moody girl and a fey journalist) in a traditionally English fairy tale setting, with leering trolls and incongruously assembled mechanical hobgoblins clad in fluted metal armor and flying leather straps with clanking buckles. (The materials physics are top shelf.) And the thing that clutched at me, made me flush, was the male protagonist's default
gait: he sidles along with his hands in his duster pockets, barely concerned with the tromping circus of spiny enemies he'll soon be combating by evoking the captured spirits of other fairy tale creatures. It's a little bit steampunk and a little bit Alice in Wonderland, although I'm told it's set in the present day.
To capture those glowing spirits of the imps you dispatch (the better to wield their powers to your own end), you grasp them with a licorice rope of glowing energy, then whip back the Sixaxis controller, like some lasso-wielding Old West Ghostbuster. Once captured, you can map your new power to one of the four face buttons, expending mana to instantly summon the spirit. Some will attack, like the translucent giant who springs out of your back to lob an exploding mortar from his iron cannon, while others protect you in a sphere of energy. As far as I could tell, your only attacks come from captured spirits, but of course you start the game with at least one. (You'd be otherwise
offenseless.)
Folklore is the sort of action game that I rarely play.
(Although I am questioning if I should have spent more time with Devil May Cry, a previous Yoshiki Okamoto game.) But it is likely I will play it from start to finish when it arrives later this year, simply to see all of the art Game Republic has created, even if the gameplay itself is pedestrian.

Folklore scores 8/10 in CVG's review

There's something to be said for playing through a brand newgame (http://www.n4g.com/ps3/News-55336.aspx#) without understanding what the f**k is going on for the most part. That something is "Eh?". Psychological survival horror games have that effect, but that's because they're the product of the sort of special 'planning meetings' down the local which turn into debauched sessions featuring - in no particular order - eastern European spirits, that barmaid your mate (http://www.n4g.com/ps3/News-55336.aspx#) wouldn't touch with yours, a minor psychotic episode after someone suggested snorting 100 percent proof absinthe, tablets banned from use in veterinary medicine and a long night stuffed inside a small, dark and damp space which could be either a police cell or a skip.

To demo με απογοήτευσε πολύ.

Well, seems like no ones bothered with a indepth one yet so here I am. I'm somehow under the impression that I was the only one that played it in the last few weeks. Anywho, as you've all seen in the trailer, the premise is about uncovering the mystery of what happened 17 years ago in the village of Lemick. You play as Ellen, who's looking for her mother or Keats, an journalist in the Occult Corner of the "Unknown Realm". It must be noted that you can't complete the game if you play only one of characters. You must finish up both scenarios before the story will advance to the final chapter.

The foundation of the gameplay is mainly taming and capturing Folks IDs (Their souls) while exploring the 7 different worlds of the Netherworld. The combat is similar to that of Rune/Lost Kingdoms with the monster capture/usage from Aria/Dawn of Sorrow. Now the capturing is where the Sixaxis comes into play. There's quite a few ways to capture an ID, usually it's just weakening them then target and yank up with your controller. However, there's some stronger ones that'll involve more complicated gestures. The first one involves waiting for the soul to turn red before yanking. The second method has you moving the Sixaxis left and right to slam the soul into the ground to weaken it. The third method is to balance the controller so that the soul is right in the very center. The final method involves shaking the controller when the soul isn't still. And depending how well you pull off the more complicated methods, you'll recieve more experience for it. The bonus system for the normal method awards you based on how many souls you can grab at once.

Now another fun part about the capturing is that it's not as simple as attack it and it'll give in. Folks all have different elements to them that you'll need to figure out and exploit before you can capture them. But you're not all left alone in that regard. In each of the 7 worlds, you'll find pages of a book that'll have lore like illustrations that'll hint on how to capture certain folks or defeat the boss. Aside from all the combat, the worlds themselves don't lend too much of a challenge, it's mostly linearly with some minor loops in exploration. The general routine has you going from Lemrick to an area of the Netherworld and repeat. Lemrick's essentially a hub, but you need to explore and investigate before the next area opens up. Ellen/Keats almost share similar solutions and folks, but have some difference's that'll warrant a replay through the 7 worlds another time around. Ellen's the more mage like of two, so she has huge summons or status altering folks. She can also find different outfits that are themed after each of the worlds. Meanwhile Keats is more physical based, with the ability to also to change form that'll boost his attack power and leave him invulnerable for a certain period of time. Also as noted earlier, each character does feature their own unique side to the story that should be touched upon for a further understanding of the grand scheme.

On the story matter however, the cutscenes are usually featured in a comic book panel style that's all text and no voice. But it's a rather stylish approach with the transitions and angles. There are some scenes that are realtime or prerendered that do feature voice which are dubbed in english. The voice acting is decent but nothing spectacular. The visual themselves aren't anything special either, but the art direction is it's saving grace. The music also lends itself very well to the atmosphere. Ranging from calm and ambient to epic-like for the major battles. Besides the BGM though, the theme song is "Nephilim" by Abingdon Boys School, which fits the overall theme of Folks Soul.

I must say this is the first PS3 game I've really enjoyed in terms of originality that's out. (Although the first really enjoyable title was Gundam Musou, that's not as original in comparison) It's a solid 15-20 hour adventure combining both of Ellen and Keats scenarios if you decide to hunt down all the folks and finish all the sidequests. I'd give the game an 8 overall if anything.

Gather your cloak, so silken and bright, as Folk will be marching all through the night.

Presentation 9.5
Incredible. Everything from the cutscenes to the falling leaves in the menus work together to create a very enthralling experience.

Graphics 9.0
While not superb in a technical sense, the artistic direction and execution of what's there are top notch.

Sound 8.5
Solid voice acting and a vividly atmospheric score demand you to turn the volume up.

Gameplay 8.5
Very fun combat with great motion controls, but a few key issues end up doing a bit of damage to the experience.

Lasting Appeal 9.0
A haunting adventure (that will take fifteen hours at least) worth coming back to.

OVERALL 9.0 (out of 10 / not an average)
Outstanding

Folklore: An unexpected treasure with a wonderfully told story (http://ps3.advancedmn.com/article.php?artid=5576)

AMN's Review Policy: Our reviews are written for you. Our goal is to write honest, to-the-point reviews that don't waste your time. This is why we've split our reviews into four sections: What the Game's About, What's Hot, What's Not and Final Word, so that you can easily find the information you want from our reviews.

What the Game's About
Don't let any Pokemon remarks taint you, right when you meet the first "Folks" in the tavern you feel like you are in Tim Burton's rendition of Star Wars. The Celtic overtones give way to an ever present mysterious feeling to the story and locals.

The two main characters also are interesting from the start. Keats is the man-of-science hardliner with a curiosity towards the paranormal. So much so, that he is an editorialist for a paranormal magazine. Ellen is a young girl that lost her mother to an unknown cause at an even earlier age. Eerily, a note was sent from her mother, to Ellen. This sets the tone for the pensive thriller that is Folklore.

What's Hot
The way the story is told is unique. You can play either character but only one chapter at a time. That way, you can play one character all the way through to see how they end up or play them interchangeably to see the story unfold from two perspectives. The mix of cinematics and comic book-like cut scenes tell the story in such an original, refreshing way.

Each new character you meet has an individual personality and quirks to add texture. You won't find a cookie-cutter or generic one in the bunch. While most of them may be dead, they have enough personality for two living people in any other game. Environments are eye-catching from the Irish ghost town to surprisingly lush Netherworld you explore.

To accompany the story, cast, and setting is wonderful, lyrical melodies. At the correct place and moment, the music will dynamically shift to fit with the mood. Be it traditional Irish tunes, or ethereal strings and vibraphone, you are sure to fall right into the mood.

Fighting and combat will not grow old. You can change your powers on the fly so you have an arsenal of magic at your disposal. Capturing new powers and fighting bosses is capped off by a great little use of the SIXAXIS. Once you have the folks knocked out, you grab a hold of their Id and pull up with the controller, from there, you have their power to keep.

What's Not
Can't read street signs? Invisible barriers? Stationary camera? Folklore isn't bullet proof. The plodding, slowly unraveling story will make gamers looking for action antsy. The Japanese influence is strong throughout the title and will turn off many American gamers.

Fighting your way through the different realms will get you turned around often. When you get in some minor skirmishes, you are all over the place and without a good sense of where you have been (even though you have a map), you'll backtrack unintentionally.

Collecting Id multipliers is frustrating when you seemed to have them lined-up but when you go for the capture, you only get a few out of the masses of enemies laying dazed and confused. Also, when going to a save point, it is easy to pick the wrong option and teleport back to town. The problem is compounded because you play the same level twice, regardless.

Final Word
Folklore is a huge surprise that blind-sided the PS3. We missed out on the PSN demo and are now regretting it. Folklore won't have mass appeal but it is a gem in the PS3 library. From the superb narrative, to the simple, yet effective gameplay mechanics Folklore is genius that shines through.

The one shame about the game is that it might be covered up by some of the larger names this fall. The linear nature of the level design will also be a turn off but with the environments looking like they do, you'll always notice a new detail. Folklore is the most imaginative game to come along in ages. Do yourself a favor and check out the best told story on the PS3.

Folklore Review από το PS3 Fanboy: "An experience that no PS3 owner should miss" (http://www.ps3fanboy.com/2007/10/11/ps3-fanboy-review-folklore/)

http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.ps3fanboy.com/media/2007/10/folklorerev1.jpg

Of all of Sony's titles this year, Folklore may have received the least attention from the gaming community. That's a shame, considering it's one of the most original and fascinating games of the year. The team at Game Republic has crafted a game filled with ephemeral beauty, mystery and intrigue. Yes, it has its share of flaws. However, the thought-provoking story, unique combat system and fantastic art style combine for an experience that no PS3 owner should miss.

The game's protagonist, Ellen, finds herself in the town of Doolin to meet her long-lost mother. However, all she sees is her mother, dead, for a few seconds before her lifeless body is seemingly spirited away. Keats, an investigative reporter of the paranormal, joins Ellen in Doolin, and finds his destiny is closely tied with Ellen's. Unfortunately, the game's opening moments seem to do everything possible to dissuade players from pressing onward. The murder of Ellen's mom is certainly intriguing, but the decidedly drab palette of Doolin and uninspired music make the game feel lifeless. Navigating the town at first feels like a chore, and the confusing pace of the comic book-esque cinematics do little to help invigorate the player. But, the Netherworld beckons, and it's there that the game starts showing off its true potential.

Ellen (and Keats) can both see the dead and journey into the Netherworld. When the player first steps into the Faery Realm, they're greeted by a lush, vivid dream-like world that stands in stark contrast to Doolin. Ironically, the world of the dead is far more alive. Here, players will utilize Folklore's unique combat system.

http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.ps3fanboy.com/media/2007/10/folklorerev2.jpg

You never directly attack enemies in Folklore. Rather, you summon creatures, called Folks, to do the work for you. At your disposal is a constantly regenerating supply of mana, and the various creatures you summon have different effects. Some will perform melee attacks, while others will cast magic spells. Some will have surprising effects. For example, in the second world you visit, you'll be able to acquire machine gunning Folks, an airship that drops bombs, and a mine-laying Folk (perfect for catching enemies off-guard!). The variety and creativity of the various creatures is what makes collecting and using them so much fun. Each Folk can also be aligned to a certain element, meaning players will have to constantly change which Folk they have at their immediate disposal. Thankfully, it's very easy to switch your Folk inventory: just press L2 and quickly change as you please. You can even save and load various palettes that contain favorite combinations of Folk.

The biggest "gimmick" to Folklore must be the way you capture the spirits of fallen Folk. Using the SIXAXIS controller, players will quickly jerk the controller upward in order to absorb the spirits of Folk. It's an interesting way of empowering players, and it works. Thankfully, this mechanic doesn't get old thanks to a surprising variety of capture motions players must use. You can tilt the controller left and right, as your character slams the Folk's spirit to the ground. You will shake the controller wildly, or balance it -- or do a combination of multiple techniques. The motion controls really add a lot of character to the title, and thanks to its spot-on recognition, it never feels cumbersome to use.

Each battle becomes an interesting experiment, as the player's growing inventory of Folks allows a wide assortment of tactics for each encounter. To contrast the open-ended nature of regular battle, bosses require using very specific tactics. Players will receive a picture book in every level and it's up to them to interpret the images on the pages to find each boss' weakness. Boss battles can be difficult, especially because of their multiple phases, but they're immensely satisfying. One feels like a detective in some ways, quickly turning to one's picture book to find a way to defeat each mammoth boss.

http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.ps3fanboy.com/media/2007/10/folklorerev3.jpg

At the end of each battle, Ellen will be able to see the memories of the dead, and piece together events from her long-forgotten past. From the moment you see one, the story ramps up quite considerably, as the pieces of a very intricate puzzle start coming together. The story is far deeper than it presents itself initially, and goes into great depth about the connection between one's memories and the afterlife. Not only is the story intriguing to see unfold, but thinking about the complex themes the story addresses adds an appreciable layer of refinement to the tale.

The story is told from two viewpoints: from Ellen's and Keats', and they play off each other magically. Ellen is in the middle of a war that's plaguing the Netherworld, and is given a rather skewed perception of the events that transpire around her. Keats, on the other hand, is controlled by other equally mysterious forces. Ultimately, both characters will question the actions of the other, causing an interesting dynamic. Clues of Keats' actions can be found in Ellen's story, and hints of Ellen's horrible past can be found in Keats'. As the story progresses, the game's sinister side starts revealing itself, as a terrifying secret becomes unraveled.

Although players are free to go through the story as only one character at first, players will be forced to play as the other in order to complete the game. This means that players will have to play each level twice. However, there are differences between Ellen and Keats that makes the second trip worthwhile. Both characters will face different creatures, and therefore have access to a different set of abilities. Keats also has the added bonus of faster mana regeneration and a special mode that makes him invulnerable. Because they come across different creatures, the tactics used in battles (especially against the bosses) changes considerably.

http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.ps3fanboy.com/media/2007/10/folklorerev4.jpg

There's a lot to love about Folklore, but there are a few flaws that take away from the overall experience. Although the story becomes much more engrossing later on, it does start off painfully slow. Navigating the town of Doolin simply isn't interesting due to the town's general lack of interactivity and drab music. Battles can be tedious, and repetitive, in spite of the numerous Folk players have access to. Finally, the lack of voice acting and full motion cutscenes during many of the story's most crucial events feels lazy and uninspired. The comic book scenes are certainly an acquired taste -- thankfully, the developers have included a Fast Forward function for the impatient (like yours truly).

The PS3 is starving for a great original adventure game, and Folklore nicely fits the bill. It certainly is a pretty game, more thanks to the fantastic art style than the technology behind it. Players have a rather lengthy adventure to partake in, especially if they want to complete the side quests, collect all the creatures, costumes and various power-ups along the way. If that isn't enough, there's also room for more content from the PS Network, thanks to downloadable quests and the dungeon creation mode. It's very primitive and contains only the most basic features, but players will be able to create and share their own dungeons through the Network.

In spite of some repetitive gameplay, confusing presentation choices, and some awkward pacing, Folklore remains one of the more compelling experiences to be found on PS3. The story is masterfully executed: the mystery behind Ellen's past, the multiple perspectives, and the complex themes the game addresses, come together in something that's captivating and truly satisfying. Yes, the game has an almost painfully slow start, but bear with it -- you'll experience something that'll definitely surprise you.

PS3 Fanboy Score: 8.0

New Folklore Pack: By the Fans, For the Fans

Here’s some news for you Folklore fans out there. In case you missed it, an all-new free Folklore Add-On Pack became available today on the PLAYSTATION Store. I’m chiming in about it because this isn’t just any ordinary Add-On Pack. This one was created by one of your fellow PlayStation fans, Underground member “Uridicy.”

Art and games have always been a hobby of mine and as an aspiring game artist it is very exciting for me to see a professional 3D model of my creature Quasarilli. I’ve worked on a few Unreal Tournament mods as a texture artist/modeler to develop on my skills as an artist so this is a real encouragement to me. When thinking of what kind of creature to make, I tried to incorporate some tribal elements with the mask like face, feathers, and horns. Of course, even the coolest looking character needs to useful, or the player isn’t going to want to get him. I tried to think of what skills I would want in a Folk other than just brute strength. Since I usually spend a lot of time in most games going after various items, I thought stealing items occasionally might be a nice skill. It’ll be interesting hearing what different people think about my Folk, Quasarilli.http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2156/2216277391_502cac6822_o.jpg
