PS3's Upscaler

Just got the new firmware 1.8 installed! I haven't actually try a thing yet. From the system menu, ALL we need are there, 1080p24, DVD upscale, BTB/WTW switch (full range/limited) and many others! WOW!

Wow, my little $500 PS3, which I thought was a great deal for a BD player, has suddenly become an even greater deal, that doesn't happen too often.

Wow. if we got 720P downscaling for BD along with upscaling for DVD along with 1080p24 output... this is a serious damn update!!!!

I ran DVE, and can confirm that it passes blacker than black. Not sure about whiter than white, though. Enabling RGB Full Range (HDMI) helped dramatically (I suspect this is what allows it to pass blacker-than-black. There's another option called "Y Pb/Cb Pr/Cr Super-White (HDMI), but I have no idea what it does.

GREAT NEWS!!!! I have just completed the HQV DVD test and the PS3 1.80 firmware passes ALL tests!! Cadence, interlacing, artifacting, you name it, it passed!!! Not only that, upscaling is terrific! Standard DVDs look spectacular... even better than my Denon 3930CI DVD player. Details show up which I have never noticed before. There is a inconsequential small bug... sometimes when I eject a disc, an error pops up, stating wrong disc inserted but it has no effect on the player.

There is a 1080P24 option on the menu, but it only selects auto or off... what it does, I am not sure. One more item, the PS3 now runs LOUDER than before. I never had an issue with the fan noise but it seems that the update has resulted in the unit running hotter as the fan now runs at a constant higher speed.

This update catapults the PS3 into the premier Blu-Ray and DVD player right now.

The YCbCr chroma response for DVDs looks much better at both 480p and 720p output to a PT-AE900U. Chroma used to be noticably down at the highest frequencies compared to RGB. Now YCbCr and RGB look almost identical. A luminance sweep output at 720p was a little more ragged than I was hoping to see, but I didn't really have time to investigate.

1080p24 and 720p output for BD over HDMI are both working very well with the 900U. I don't think it's ever looked better.

Streaming music and pictures from Windows Media Player 11 is also working for me. I haven't tried going the other way yet. As others are experiencing, the PS3 does not like my collection of video files.

Has anyone else noticed the Bitmapping option for SACDs that was added to Music Settings?

Chase

Where are the HDDVD fanboys now who said that we would never get some of these features? I bet some today are re-evaluating purchasing this unit.

1080p24 (which HD DVD does that)
DVD upscaling

This console is shaping up to be the center of the ultimate HT systems.

Now, the only thing that is on my want list is either one of the following?
1. Internal dts-HDMA decoding
2. dts-HDMA/DD-THD bitstreams over HDMI

If Sony even does either one of these, this will be the ultimate BD player.

Scaling Options

A note: double scale should only ever be used if you have a 1080i/p TV.

Double-scaling is basically exactly as it sounds. It is literally doubling the native resolution of a DVD (480p to 960p), and then boxing it in black to get it to a native 1080p resolution for TV compatibility.

Why do this? This is how anal the engineers working on PS3's media functionality are :p. When doing standard upscaling (regardless of the algorithms/filters employed), you are going from 480p (once deinterlaced) to either 720p or 1080i/p. That is not an evenly divisible conversion, so NONE of the original pixels remain in the upscaled image. All pixels are interpolated. When doing double-scaling, all the original pixels still remain … with the newly interpolated pixels filling out the rest of the resolution.

Basically, it’s for people looking for the most accurate image as compared to the original source material. On most material, I do find it subtly crisper … but that is a bit hard to verify since the image size is smaller. Once I get a front-projector, I think this will be especially interesting to mess around with.

Normal is the more traditional upscaling setting. It will fill your screen to the contents aspect ratio. This is obviously all interpolated data as mentioned above, and may be ever so slightly softer due to the nature of interpolation). It is really quite good compared to standalone DVD players.

I actually went over some settings for a previous poster a little while back. Here’s a link -> PS3 DVD Upconversion Settings (http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=9675811&postcount=32108)

Basically, it comes down to your setup, specific DVD, and personal preference for some of the settings.Πηγή: http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=9831604&postcount=463
